Taxonomy & naming
Parotocinclus amazonensis was described by Julio César Garavello in 1977, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) retains Parotocinclus amazonensis Garavello, 1977 as the valid accepted name, placed within the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae of the family Loricariidae.
A significant taxonomic question surrounds this species: PlanetCatfish, reflecting a view current in part of the specialist catfish community, treats P. amazonensis as a junior synonym of Rhinotocinclus britskii (Boeseman, 1974) — a species described from the Coppename River of Suriname. Under that interpretation, the valid name would be Rhinotocinclus britskii, with its range extending across coastal Guiana rivers, Suriname, parts of the Orinoco, and into Amazonian drainages. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes, however, continue to list Parotocinclus amazonensis as a separate, valid species with an Amazon basin distribution. This site follows the Catalog of Fishes as the authority for valid names, and the species is accordingly filed here under Parotocinclus amazonensis — but the synonymy question is genuine and may be resolved differently in future taxonomic revisions.
The genus Parotocinclus belongs to the tribe Otothyrini or a related lineage within Hypoptopomatinae, a subfamily of very small, heavily armoured loricariids that graze algae and periphyton from hard surfaces in flowing water. The genus name combines para- (Greek: beside or near) with Otocinclus, indicating a close relationship or resemblance to that popular aquarium genus. The specific epithet amazonensis is a geographic adjective, denoting Amazonian origin.

Parotocinclus amazonensis is a very small catfish: FishBase records a maximum total length of 1 in TL, placing it among the miniaturised members of its already small-bodied subfamily. (If the PlanetCatfish synonymy with Rhinotocinclus britskii is accepted, the relevant size figure for that taxon is approximately 2.5 in SL — substantially larger, which itself underscores the taxonomic uncertainty around what 'amazonensis' encompasses.)
The body is typical of the Hypoptopomatinae: compact and strongly depressed, with a broad, flat head and a ventrally positioned suckermouth, covered in overlapping bony scutes from head to tail. Feeding

The species' peaceful disposition and small size make it compatible with other small, non-aggressive fish, and a group of several individuals is preferable to a solitary specimen, as Parotocinclus are typically more settled and active in the presence of conspecifics. Note that the ongoing taxonomic uncertainty means a fish sold as P. amazonensis may potentially represent a broader species complex.
