Taxonomy & naming
Parotocinclus eppleyi was described by Schaefer and Provenzano in 1993 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 4, number 1, pages 39–56), in a paper treating the systematics and biogeography of Guyana Shield Parotocinclus and erecting a new Venezuelan species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Parotocinclus eppleyi Schaefer & Provenzano, 1993.
The species is placed in the family Loricariidae, subfamily Hypoptopomatinae — the dwarf armoured catfishes. Hypoptopomatinae is characterised by small body size, a simplified plate arrangement including a distinctive mid-lateral series, and an entirely freshwater distribution across South America east of the Andes. The genus Parotocinclus contains many species distributed from northern to eastern South America, with the Guyana Shield group — to which P. eppleyi belongs — centred on the ancient crystalline uplands that form the geological backbone of Venezuela, Guyana, and adjacent areas.
The Guyana Shield Parotocinclus described in the 1993 paper represent a distinct ecological and biogeographic assemblage compared to Atlantic-drainage species such as P. spilosoma, reflecting the Shield's long geological isolation as a centre of endemism for freshwater fishes.
Morphology
Parotocinclus eppleyi is a minute fish: adults reach only 1 in standard length (SL), making it one of the smallest known loricariids. Despite this tiny stature the body is fully covered in the bony scutes common to all Loricariidae, and the fish is robustly built relative to its size, with the broad flat head and disc-like suckermouth typical of benthic grazers.
The dorsal-fin count is 8 soft rays; the anal fin bears 6 soft rays — meristic values standard within Parotocinclus. Coloration and pattern details specific to this species were described in the original 1993 paper but are not captured in the sources consulted here.
Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for P. eppleyi in the literature consulted. In related species, males may show slightly more developed odontodes or subtle body differences compared to females, but nothing species-specific is confirmed for this taxon.
Habitat
Parotocinclus eppleyi is known from the upper and middle portions of the Rio Orinoco, within Venezuela and Colombia. This places the species in one of South America's great river systems, draining an enormous catchment that includes the Llanos plains, the Andes piedmont, and the ancient Guyana Shield uplands. The Guyana Shield headwaters of the Orinoco are typically oligotrophic, clear, and warm, with rock-strewn bottoms and moderate to strong current — prime habitat for periphyton-scraping loricariids.
Exact water chemistry data (pH, temperature range, conductivity) for the collection localities of P. eppleyi are not available in the sources consulted, beyond the general designation of freshwater, demersal, tropical. Orinoco Shield rivers are generally soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and warm year-round, consistent with conditions encountered by other Parotocinclus in the region.
The IUCN assessment (2020) notes the species' range as the upper and middle Orinoco and cites a wide distribution within the system as a factor contributing to its Least Concern status.
Feeding
Parotocinclus eppleyi is an aufwuchs specialist — a grazer of the biofilm community (algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, bacteria, and fine detritus) that colonises hard substrate surfaces in well-lit, flowing water. The ventrally set suckermouth with its rasping teeth is perfectly suited to this lifestyle, allowing the fish to maintain purchase on rock surfaces in current while feeding.
In the aquarium, natural algal growth on glass, rocks, and driftwood is the most important dietary component. Supplementary sinking algae wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber) should be provided, as a small fish at 1 in may not be able to compete for food with larger tankmates. The diminutive size means this species will be more comfortable in a tank where it is not out-competed for food or disturbed by larger fish.
Mating
No specific courtship behaviour has been documented for Parotocinclus eppleyi in the literature consulted. In the broader Parotocinclus genus and the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, males typically establish loose territories around preferred spawning surfaces and engage in pursuit or displacement behaviour toward rival males and toward gravid females.
Given the extremely small adult size of P. eppleyi, intraspecific interactions are unlikely to be physically damaging, but providing multiple potential spawning surfaces and adequate space is good practice when attempting to maintain a group of this species.
Breeding
Breeding records specific to Parotocinclus eppleyi are not available in the published literature consulted. In related Parotocinclus and Hypoptopomatinae generally, small clutches of adhesive eggs are deposited on hard, clean substrate surfaces — aquarium glass, smooth rock, or the underside of broad leaves. Incubation is typical for small tropical catfishes (several days at tropical temperatures), and fry are miniature adults capable of grazing from hatching.
The species' extremely small adult size means that a dedicated, appropriately scaled aquarium is likely required for successful reproduction; competition or disturbance from larger fish could easily suppress or disrupt spawning attempts. Specific temperature triggers, seasonal cues, or other conditioning requirements are unknown.
In the aquarium
At 1 in SL, Parotocinclus eppleyi is a nano-scale loricariid that suits small, well-planted or well-decorated aquaria in the 10–15 US gal range. Its diminutive size means it can be overwhelmed or out-competed by most standard community fish; ideal tankmates are micro-sized species — small tetras (neons, embers, chilis), nano rasboras, small Corydoras pygmaeus-type cories, and similarly scaled fish.
The tank should offer significant hard surface area covered with algal growth: rocks, slate pieces, driftwood, and even the aquarium glass itself. A thin coat of green or brown algae on these surfaces is a benefit, not an eyesore, for this species. Moderate flow helps oxygenate the water and mimics the Orinoco upland streams the fish comes from.
P. eppleyi is rarely seen in the hobby and, when available, is likely collected for the specialist trade rather than mass-market distribution. Water chemistry should approximate soft, neutral to slightly acidic tropical conditions consistent with the upper Orinoco, though exact parameters are not established from published data. Standard tropical temperatures (75–82 °F) are a reasonable starting point.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Parotocinclus eppleyi as Least Concern in December 2020, citing the species' relatively wide distribution within the upper and middle Orinoco system and the absence of identified major threats. The Rio Orinoco basin, while subject to some pressures from deforestation, mining, and oil extraction in parts of its catchment, remains one of the more intact large river systems in South America overall.
The Guyana Shield tributaries where this species likely occurs are among the less disturbed portions of the Orinoco drainage, benefiting from lower population density and relatively intact forest cover compared to the Llanos lowlands. However, mining activity on the Shield — particularly gold and coltan extraction — has caused localised but severe habitat degradation in some Shield rivers, and continued monitoring of Parotocinclus populations in affected areas would be warranted.
