Parotocinclus jimi is a small aufwuchs-grazing catfish endemic to the coastal river drainages of Bahia state in eastern Brazil — one of over forty described species in its genus and a representative of the distinctive, adipose-fin-bearing Parotocinclus lineage within Hypoptopomatinae.

Taxonomy & naming

Parotocinclus jimi was described by Júlio C. Garavello in 1977 in Arquivos de Zoologia (São Paulo, volume 28, number 4, pp. 9, Figs. 25–26), as part of a systematic treatment of the genus Parotocinclus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; species id 5312) recognises the valid combination Parotocinclus jimi Garavello, 1977.

Parotocinclus is distinguished from the superficially similar Otocinclus — with which it is frequently compared — by the presence of an adipose fin, which Otocinclus lacks. Both genera are small, algae-grazing hypoptopomatines, but Parotocinclus is a more morphologically and geographically diverse group, with species spread across multiple Atlantic coastal and interior Brazilian drainages as well as portions of the La Plata system.

The species epithet jimi honours Dr Jorge Jim (1942–2011), a Brazilian herpetologist and professor who served as Head of the Department of Zoology at the Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Botucatu, Brazil. His private zoological collections are housed at that institution.

Morphology

Parotocinclus jimi is a miniature loricariid reaching 1.5 in total length. The body follows the compressed, rounded profile characteristic of the genus: moderately stocky rather than elongated, with a broad, rounded head and a ventral sucking disc. The scute armour is well-developed across the dorsal and lateral surfaces, and the lateral line is typically fully developed.

The defining external character that separates Parotocinclus from Otocinclus in the field is the presence of a small but distinct adipose fin positioned between the dorsal and caudal fins. This fin, reduced or absent in Otocinclus, is consistently present across Parotocinclus species and is visible on live fish as a small, slightly fleshy lobe.

Coloration is the typical mottled brown and cream of a benthic algae-grazer — dark brown on the dorsal surface with a paler ventrum, and variable speckling or reticulation providing camouflage against the rocky and sandy substrates of its home streams. Habitat

Parotocinclus jimi is endemic to the coastal drainages of Bahia state in eastern Brazil. The type locality is the Rio do Peixe, a small tributary of the Rio de Contas, at Fazenda Pedra Branca, Itagibá, Bahia. These are Atlantic coastal streams draining the eastern face of the Brazilian highlands — rivers that are generally short, relatively steep-gradient, and hydrologically distinct from the great interior basins of the Paraná or Amazon.

Water conditions recorded for the species include temperatures of 72–77 °F — somewhat cooler than true Amazonian streams, reflecting the higher-altitude, coastal-facing catchment. The genus is documented as a facultative air-breather. Stream habitat is likely characterised by clean, well-oxygenated water, rocky and sandy substrates, and moderate to good clarity — typical of the upper reaches of eastern Brazilian coastal rivers.

Feeding

Parotocinclus jimi is an aufwuchs and algae grazer, as is typical for the genus. The ventral sucking disc, papillate lips, and fine teeth are adapted for scraping the biofilm of algae, diatoms, and associated organic matter from hard surfaces — rock faces, coarser substrate particles, submerged wood, and plant stems.

In the aquarium, the species should be provided with sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and surfaces carrying mature algal growth. Small pieces of blanched vegetables (cucumber, courgette) are likely accepted. As a small species with a very fine mouth, food particles must be correspondingly small. Competition from larger, faster catfishes will disadvantage P. jimi at feeding time.

Mating

No courtship observations specific to P. jimi are documented in the available literature. In related Parotocinclus species and in the broader Hypoptopomatinae, sexual dimorphism tends to be subtle; males may develop small odontodes on the snout or pectoral spines during the reproductive season, and females become visibly fuller-bodied when gravid.

Spawning likely takes place in sheltered microhabitats within the stream — crevices among rocks, root tangles, or the undersides of submerged objects — consistent with the brooding habits reported in related genera.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Parotocinclus jimi appear in the available literature. The species is not established in the ornamental trade. Reproductive biology can be inferred at the genus level: Parotocinclus species are thought to be substrate spawners, likely depositing adhesive eggs on hard surfaces in sheltered positions, with some degree of parental attendance, but detailed observations are lacking for most members of the genus including P. jimi.

Capturing and maintaining breeding adults from the wild — or sourcing the species through specialist channels — would be prerequisites for any captive breeding effort. Given the narrow endemic range of this species in Bahia coastal drainages, wild collection is unlikely to supply significant numbers.

In the aquarium

Parotocinclus jimi is not available in the hobby trade and has no established aquarium record beyond its documentation in systematic literature. Its small size (1.5 in TL), algae-grazing diet, and habitat preferences suggest it would be suitable for a small, mature aquarium with good lighting to support algal growth, clean and well-oxygenated water in the range of 72–77 °F, and a pH and hardness consistent with its Bahia coastal stream origin.

The presence of an adipose fin — absent in the more commonly kept Otocinclus — is a reliable identification character for distinguishing Parotocinclus should specimens become available. As an endemic of a geographically restricted coastal drainage, any trade specimens would almost certainly be wild-caught and would benefit from careful acclimation and stable water quality.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Parotocinclus jimi as Least Concern in November 2018. The species is known from the coastal river drainages of Bahia state, a region that has experienced significant deforestation and land-use change. Bahia's Atlantic Forest-associated stream systems are among the more threatened freshwater habitats in Brazil, as the Atlantic Forest biome is one of the world's most heavily deforested biodiversity hotspots.

While the current LC status reflects no documented population crash, the narrow endemic range of P. jimi within a biome under sustained pressure means that localised habitat degradation — stream siltation, riparian clearing, water abstraction — could have an outsized impact on a species with limited potential for range-shift or recolonisation.
