Taxonomy & naming
Parotocinclus spilosoma was described by American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1941. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination as Parotocinclus spilosoma (Fowler, 1941), with the parenthetical authority reflecting a combination change since the original description. The species is placed in the family Loricariidae, subfamily Hypoptopomatinae — the smallest of the main loricariid subfamilies, characterised by diminutive body size, a single row of mid-lateral plates between the dorsal and ventral plate series, and well-developed abdominal plates in many genera.
The genus Parotocinclus was erected to accommodate small hypoptopomatine catfishes distributed across much of eastern and northern South America. Its name compounds Greek para (beside), ous/otis (ear), and kygklos (a kind of fish) — alluding to some perceived positional or structural similarity near the ear region. The genus contains dozens of species, several of which remain undescribed or have shifted between genera as hypoptopomatine systematics has been progressively refined by molecular and morphological phylogenetics.
P. spilosoma is known from the Paraíba River basin of Paraíba State, northeastern Brazil — a river system draining the Atlantic slopes of the Borborema Plateau before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near the city of João Pessoa.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum of 2.5 in total length (TL), placing P. spilosoma among the smaller members of its genus. The body form follows the general hypoptopomatine pattern: a dorsoventrally flattened anterior region, moderate lateral compression posteriorly, and complete coverage in bony scutes. The head is broad and somewhat triangular in dorsal view, with the suckermouth positioned ventrally beneath the snout.
The species epithet spilosoma — from Greek spilos (spot) and soma (body) — refers directly to the spotted body patterning, which is the most conspicuous external character: a pale base colour overlaid with darker spots or blotches across the body and fins. The exact arrangement of spots can vary individually.
Sexual dimorphism details are not well-documented for this species specifically. In Parotocinclus generally, males may develop more pronounced odontodes and subtle morphological differences compared to females, but these are not reliably reported for P. spilosoma in the literature consulted. Gravid females may appear fuller in body profile.
Habitat
Parotocinclus spilosoma is known from the Paraíba River drainage, Paraíba State, northeastern Brazil — a relatively small Atlantic-slope river system with a semi-arid to sub-humid catchment. FishBase records the species as a freshwater, demersal species with a preference for tropical waters in the pH range 5.8–7.5, hardness 5–20 dH, and temperature 72–82 °F.
Members of Parotocinclus in general are found in rocky streams and rivers with hard substrate and moderate current, where periphyton communities develop on exposed rock faces and submerged cobbles. The northeastern Brazilian rivers where P. spilosoma occurs tend to be seasonally variable — subject to reduced flow and higher temperatures in the dry season (typically June–November in this region) and more robust flows during the wet season. Feeding
Like all members of Parotocinclus, P. spilosoma is an aufwuchs feeder: a micro-grazer that uses its ventrally positioned, disc-like suckermouth to rasp algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and fine organic detritus from hard substrate surfaces. This feeding mode is shared across the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae and reflects a morphological and ecological parallel to the better-known otocinclus catfishes.
In the aquarium, the diet should consist primarily of algae and algae-based foods: algae wafers, spirulina discs, and — most importantly — natural algal growth on tank glass and décor. A modest layer of green or brown algae on the aquarium walls and hardscape is beneficial. Blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) are accepted supplementary foods. Live or frozen micro-invertebrates can be offered occasionally for protein variety. Like other small loricariids, P. spilosoma is most active after lights-out and should receive food that sinks to the bottom.
Mating
Specific courtship observations for P. spilosoma are not available in the published literature consulted. In Parotocinclus and related Hypoptopomatinae, males typically compete for access to females and to the hard substrate sites where eggs are deposited. Males may actively pursue gravid females and nudge or circle them during pre-spawning behaviour.
At this small size, intraspecific aggression is generally mild, and mixed-sex groups can typically coexist without significant conflict. A sex ratio favouring females is often recommended in small catfishes to reduce male competition pressure, but no species-specific data are available to confirm this for P. spilosoma.
Breeding
Breeding specifics for Parotocinclus spilosoma have not been published in the sources consulted. Within the genus Parotocinclus and the broader Hypoptopomatinae, species typically lay small clutches of adhesive eggs on hard surfaces — rocks, aquarium glass, or wood — sometimes in sheltered positions beneath overhangs. Some degree of paternal care (egg fanning or proximity guarding) is reported in related genera, but the extent of parental investment in P. spilosoma is unknown.
For hobbyists interested in attempting a breeding project, the general approach successful with related small loricariids applies: condition adults on varied, quality food; maintain clean, well-oxygenated water within the known parameter range; and provide a mix of smooth rock surfaces and gentle flow. Any spawning attempts should be documented, as published accounts for this species are scarce.
In the aquarium
At 2.5 in TL, P. spilosoma is a genuinely small pleco suitable for modestly sized aquaria. A group of four to six individuals can be kept in a tank of 15 US gal or more, provided adequate hard substrate and algal growth are present. The species does well with other small, peaceful community fish — tetras, small rasboras, Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids are all compatible provided they do not occupy the bottom in competing numbers.
Water parameters within the documented range (72–82 °F, pH 5.8–7.5, moderate softness to moderate hardness) should be maintained with regular partial water changes. The fish is demersal and spends most of its time on the aquarium glass, rocks, and wood, grazing methodically. Smooth, algae-covered rock or slate pieces, along with sections of driftwood, provide both feeding surface and shelter.
P. spilosoma and its Parotocinclus relatives are sometimes overlooked in favour of the more widely available otocinclus, but they offer a somewhat hardier constitution and an interesting spotted patterning. A well-established aquarium with visible algal growth, moderate flow, and clean water will bring out the species at its best.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Parotocinclus spilosoma as Least Concern in November 2018, with no major threats identified at the time of assessment. The Paraíba River basin in northeastern Brazil, where the species is endemic, is a relatively small drainage under ongoing pressure from agricultural water extraction, pollution, and hydrological modification — factors relevant to a species with a naturally limited range.
Northeastern Brazil's semi-arid climate makes its river systems particularly sensitive to changes in rainfall patterns and water extraction. While P. spilosoma is currently stable, the restricted distribution of an endemic stream-dwelling catfish in a region with periodic drought stress and increasing land-use intensity warrants continued monitoring.
