Taxonomy & naming
Francesca LaMonte described this species in 1935 in American Museum Novitates No. 784 (p. 3, Fig. 2), erecting it as Hemiancistrus brevis from a holotype (AMNH 12602) collected near Sena Madureira, near the mouth of the River Macauã, a tributary of the Rio Iaco, itself a tributary of the Rio Purus, Amazonas state, Brazil. The specific epithet brevis is Latin for 'short', a reference to the comparatively compact body proportions of the holotype relative to related species known at the time.
Isbrücker (1980) transferred the species to Peckoltia, and subsequent revisions — including Fisch-Muller in Reis et al. (2003), Ferraris (2007), Armbruster (2008), and Armbruster et al. (2015) — all confirm the valid combination Peckoltia brevis (LaMonte 1935) as recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). The former combination Hemiancistrus brevis is the only named synonym. CoF records the distribution as the Purus River basin and upper Amazon basin, spanning Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru — a markedly wider range than the single type locality would suggest.
In the LDA-number system (Das Aquarium magazine) the species carries the code LDA078, distinguishing it from the numerous Peckoltia sp. codes that circulate for undescribed congeners from the Purus drainage.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL) per FishBase (Fisch-Muller 2003), making P. brevis a medium-small Peckoltia — appreciably shorter than P. vittata and broadly comparable to other mid-sized members of the genus. The body is stocky, dorsoventrally flattened, and covered in the typical keeled scute armour of the Hypostominae.
The pattern that earns it the common name 'tiger pleco' consists of alternating dark brown to blackish and pale cream or yellowish bands running transversely across the body and head. The banding is generally crisp and contrasting in fresh-caught or well-conditioned specimens; stress, illness, or post-spawning condition can temporarily reduce contrast. The caudal fin carries matching banding.
Sexual dimorphism mirrors the genus-level pattern seen in P. vittata: breeding males develop small odontodes on the leading pectoral fin rays and along the posterior body flanks. Females remain smooth-scuted in those areas and develop a noticeably wider body profile when gravid, most apparent in dorsal view behind the pectoral fin bases. The genital papilla — small and pointed in males, large and rounded in ripe females — is a reliable secondary indicator.
Habitat
The type locality — the mouth of the Rio Macauã, a small tributary of the Rio Iaco (Purus drainage), near Sena Madureira in Amazonas state — places the species in the western Amazon basin. The broader CoF distribution covers the Purus basin and upper Amazon across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru, consistent with a species associated with the white-water and clearwater tributaries draining the western Andes foothills into the main Amazon stem.
The Purus River and its tributaries are typically whitewater systems — warm, moderately productive, with conductivity generally higher than black-water Xingu or Rio Negro systems. PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog records water parameters from the region as pH 5.8–7.8 and hardness 15–28 dH, reflecting this moderate-to-hard, near-neutral chemistry. FishBase confirms temperature 72–79 °F.
Microhabitat is inferred as rocky or root-tangled substrate in shallow runs and riffle zones, consistent with the habitat use of congeners. The Purus drainage is subject to seasonal flooding that temporarily increases fish dispersal range and connects normally isolated pockets of suitable habitat.
Feeding
Like other members of the genus, P. brevis is a generalised aufwuchs grazer and opportunistic omnivore. The bicuspid teeth are adapted for scraping the biofilm community — algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine organic detritus — from rocks, roots, and submerged wood. The species does not appear to be a dedicated xylophage in the manner of Panaqolus or Panaque, though driftwood is valuable habitat and the biofilm on wood surfaces will be grazed.
In the aquarium, sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based pellets form a reliable staple. Blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, sweet potato — supplement the diet. Small protein-rich foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia) are useful for conditioning prior to spawning but should not dominate the diet. The species is not aggressive at food and will share with most peaceful community fish.
Mating
Courtship behaviour in P. brevis has been recorded in aquaria, following the general Peckoltia template. Males in breeding condition become increasingly territorial around preferred cave sites and display their interopercular and posterior-body odontodes to rival males and to prospective mates. Territorial encounters between males consist of lateral displays, substrate circling, and occasional brief contact; prolonged aggression is unusual if territory is adequately divided.
A female approaching breeding condition becomes visibly broader across the mid-body and posterior thorax when viewed from above, and her papilla swells and rounds. The male will encourage her into his selected cavity. As with P. vittata, a single male can be maintained with multiple females in a sufficiently large aquarium; keeping two males without adequate territory in a small tank generates chronic stress and disrupts reproductive activity.
Breeding
Peckoltia brevis is a cave-spawner with paternal brood care, consistent with the loricariid family pattern. PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog records three aquarium breeding reports for the species. The male selects and defends a cavity — hollow driftwood, a narrow rockwork crevice, or a dedicated breeding tube — and remains with the clutch throughout incubation, fanning continuously to maintain oxygen levels.
Eggs are adhesive and amber-orange in colour, deposited on the cavity walls. At typical aquarium temperatures (75–79 °F) incubation takes roughly 5–7 days. The fry emerge with yolk sacs and shelter with the male for several additional days before becoming free-swimming. Juveniles display the adult tiger banding pattern from an early age. The male guards actively until fry begin dispersing.
Conditioning adults on a varied diet, maintaining pristine water quality, and providing a modest temperature fluctuation (dropping 34–36 °F to simulate seasonal cue, then gradually restoring it) has been reported to trigger spawning in Peckoltia species generally. Multiple cave sites should be available so the male can select a site without excessive competition.
In the aquarium
At approximately 4.5 in SL the Purus tiger pleco is a practical mid-sized pleco well suited to community aquaria of 25–40 US gal. Its temperament is benign toward other species, and its water parameter tolerance is broader than many Xingu-drainage species, making it somewhat more forgiving for hobbyists who cannot maintain extreme softwater conditions.
Water should be maintained at 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and hardness up to about 15 dH; higher hardness is tolerated but not ideal long-term. Good filtration and a moderate current are appreciated — the Purus tributaries flow year-round and the fish expect oxygenated conditions. Weekly water changes of 25–30% are recommended.
Rockwork piles, caves, and driftwood tangles are essential furnishings. The species spends most of the day wedged in a crevice or beneath a flat stone, emerging at dusk to forage. Without shelter it will be stressed, inactive, and susceptible to infection. Plants are not harmful but are also not required; Anubias and java fern attached to wood are compatible choices.
Compatible tankmates include peaceful mid-water fish: small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and small cichlids. The species is safe with invertebrates such as shrimp in a well-furnished tank. Avoid housing two males together in confined spaces.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia brevis as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting a confirmed distribution across the Purus River basin and upper Amazon (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru) with no evidence of significant population decline. The species enters the ornamental trade in modest numbers from the Purus drainage and is recorded in aquarium keeping records on PlanetCatfish.
The Purus River basin is subject to increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and artisanal gold mining, all of which increase sedimentation — a concern for rocky-substrate loricariids that depend on clean, well-oxygenated riffle zones. At present the species' wide range provides a buffer against local habitat loss, but targeted surveys in the Purus tributaries would help establish baseline abundance data. Captive breeding, documented in the hobby, reduces dependence on wild-collected specimens.
