Peckoltia cavatica is a small, obscure loricariid from the Essequibo drainage of Guyana — a cave-specialist and rock-hole dweller with a narrow range and an Endangered conservation status that sets it apart from nearly every other pleco in the hobby. Collected almost exclusively from holes in lateritic rock outcrops, it is rarely seen in the trade but earns its place among the most ecologically specialised members of its genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Peckoltia cavatica was formally described by Jonathan Armbruster and David Werneke in 2005 in the journal Zootaxa (882: 1–14), from type specimens collected in the Essequibo basin of Guyana. The same paper included a redescription of the related species Peckoltia braueri (Eigenmann, 1912). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Peckoltia cavatica as a valid species, with authority attributed without parentheses: Armbruster & Werneke, 2005.

The genus Peckoltia belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of family Loricariidae — the suckermouth armoured catfishes. Peckoltia is a large and somewhat heterogeneous assemblage of small to medium-sized plecos; molecular and morphological phylogenetic work has repeatedly shown it to be paraphyletic with respect to some related genera, and circumscription of the genus has shifted across revisions. At the time of description, Armbruster and Werneke distinguished P. cavatica from all congeners except P. braueri primarily by the presence of distal orange bands in the dorsal and caudal fins — a character shared between these two Guianese species — combined with fine black lines outlining the bony plates and head bones.

No L-number or LDA-number has been assigned to this species, reflecting its rarity in the ornamental trade. It has not appeared in the mainstream German aquarium press (DATZ, Das Aquarium) or the PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog with a coded number.

Morphology

Adults of P. cavatica reach approximately 3 in standard length (SL). The body follows the generalised loricariid bauplan: depressed and elongated, encased in rows of bony scutes, with a ventral suckermouth and pectoral fins that allow the fish to cling to hard substrates in fast-moving water.

The species is distinguished from most of its congeners by two colour characters: distal orange bands in the dorsal and caudal fins (shared with P. braueri), and thin black lines that outline the dermal plates and the bones of the head — a reticulate tracery that is absent or far less pronounced in related species. Dorsal fin counts are 2 spines and 7 soft rays; the anal fin has 1 spine and 4 soft rays — ray counts consistent with the general Peckoltia pattern.

The body is described as elongated relative to some congeners. Living specimens from lateritic-rock microhabitats would be expected to show strong pectoral-spine musculature suited to anchoring in crevices, though detailed functional morphology of this species has not been published. Eyes are well-developed, consistent with a fish that inhabits rocky holes rather than a subterranean cave system.

Habitat

All known collection localities for P. cavatica fall within the Essequibo river drainage, Guyana — a large blackwater and clearwater system draining the Guiana Shield. The species shows a pronounced association with lateritic rock outcrops: field records indicate that most specimens were taken from holes and cavities within lateritic rock formations, and the authors of the original description explicitly note that these rock holes are believed to serve as breeding sites as well as refugia.

Lateritic (iron-rich) rock outcrops occur as exposed inselbergs and boulder fields along Guiana Shield river courses, where the substrate creates a mosaic of crevices, undercut ledges, and enclosed holes quite unlike the sandy or silty bottoms that dominate the lower reaches of many South American rivers. Current across these outcrops can range from moderate to swift, and water tends to be well-oxygenated, with low to moderate conductivity typical of Guiana Shield drainages — soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral conditions.

The narrow microhabitat specificity implied by the collection data is consistent with the species' small range and its Endangered status: a specialist tied to a particular rock type in a single river basin faces compounded risk from any disruption to its restricted habitat.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of P. cavatica in the wild has been published. Based on its morphology and phylogenetic position within Peckoltia, it is best characterised as an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer — rasping algae, periphyton, diatoms, detritus, and the microbial mats that colonise submerged rock surfaces. Unlike the Panaqolus and Panaque wood-eating lineages, Peckoltia species do not rely on cellulose from wood as a primary dietary source, though they may ingest incidental organic material including plant fragments and invertebrates.

The lateritic rock microhabitat colonised by P. cavatica would support a biofilm community on exposed surfaces, with invertebrate prey (aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans) available within crevices. In aquaria, similar Peckoltia species accept a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets and wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato), spirulina-based foods, and occasional protein foods such as bloodworm or brine shrimp. Driftwood can be offered for grazing and behavioural enrichment even if not a dietary staple.

Mating

No published observations of courtship in P. cavatica exist in the scientific or hobby literature. In related Peckoltia species, males are known to develop elongated interopercular odontodes during reproductive condition, and males compete for and defend suitable cave or crevice sites. The observation that lateritic rock holes are believed to serve as breeding sites in the wild suggests that natural spawning takes place within enclosed rock cavities rather than in open water.

Given the species' specialised habitat association with rock holes, it is likely that the male selects and guards a suitable cavity and that the breeding biology follows the general cave-spawner pattern seen across Loricariidae — but no captive breeding attempts have been confirmed in the published record, and the species' rarity in the hobby means relevant data is essentially absent.

Breeding

No confirmed captive breeding records for P. cavatica have been published or widely reported. The general loricariid pattern — cave spawning with paternal brood care, adhesive eggs, and male fanning of the clutch — can be inferred from the broader subfamily and from the wild habitat data (rock holes used as breeding sites), but direct evidence is lacking.

The species' extreme rarity in the ornamental trade means that suitable breeding pairs have seldom if ever been assembled in a controlled aquarium setting. Any hobbyist fortunate enough to work with this fish would likely achieve best results by providing multiple enclosed rock cave structures, maintaining soft, mildly acidic water consistent with the Essequibo drainage, and observing conditions typical for small Peckoltia: clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current across the caves, and a varied diet to condition fish to spawning readiness.

In the aquarium

Peckoltia cavatica is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. It carries no L-number, has not appeared in mainstream hobbyist publications, and has not been commercially bred, meaning any specimen is almost certainly wild-caught — a significant consideration given its Endangered status. Acquiring or importing this species is strongly discouraged unless part of a coordinated conservation breeding programme.

Should care information ever become relevant, the species' natural history suggests a setup oriented around lateritic or smooth river rocks arranged to provide multiple enclosed crevices and cave entrances. Water chemistry should reflect Guiana Shield conditions: temperature approximately 75–81 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, very soft to moderately soft water (below 8 dGH). Good oxygenation and moderate flow across rock structures would be appropriate. Supplementary foods should include biofilm-promoting materials (driftwood, rock surfaces with established algae) plus sinking wafers and occasional vegetables.

The fish's small size (under 3 in SL) would make it suitable in modest tank volumes — a 60–80-litre species tank with structured rock microhabitats would serve a small group — but the conservation imperative to leave wild populations undisturbed must take absolute precedence over any hobbyist interest.

Conservation

Peckoltia cavatica is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed on 16 October 2020. The EN listing under criterion B1 reflects a restricted extent of occurrence (EOO) combined with a projected, inferred, or observed continuing decline in the area, extent, or quality of habitat (criterion b(iii)). This makes it one of the most conservation-sensitive plecos in the Hypostominae, and the only Endangered species in the current WaterAquaria Peckoltia coverage.

The species' vulnerability flows directly from its biology: it is a microhabitat specialist tied to lateritic rock outcrops within a single river drainage (the Essequibo, Guyana). Any degradation of these rock-outcrop habitats — through mining activity (the Guiana Shield is a major gold and bauxite mining region), sedimentation, altered river flows, or chemical pollution — disproportionately affects a species with nowhere else to go. Gold mining in particular is a documented threat to Guiana Shield aquatic ecosystems, introducing mercury contamination and physical habitat destruction at artisanal and large-scale operations.

The broader Essequibo basin has so far been relatively less impacted than major Amazonian tributaries, but that status is not guaranteed. Guyana's growing extractive economy — including both hard-rock mining and expanding oil production — places the Essequibo watershed under increasing pressure. Conservation of P. cavatica depends on the integrity of specific lateritic rock outcrop localities within this system: there is no managed captive population, no ex-situ breeding programme, and no established presence in the hobby that could buffer the species against wild population loss.
