Taxonomy & naming
Pogonopoma parahybae was originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1877, and the species is today recognised in the combination Pogonopoma parahybae, the parentheses on the authority reflecting the change of genus since the original description. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats the name as valid.
The species was redescribed by Armbruster (1998), whose work on the Rhinelepis group clarified the membership and relationships of these large rheophilic loricariids. In the classification followed here, Pogonopoma sits within the subfamily Rhinelepinae — the lineage built around Rhinelepis and its close relatives, sometimes referred to informally as the Rhinelepis group. FishBase likewise places Pogonopoma parahybae in Loricariidae under Rhinelepinae.
The specific epithet parahybae refers to the Paraíba (Parahyba) do Sul River, the basin to which the species is restricted.
Morphology
Pogonopoma parahybae reaches about 10.5 in in standard length, placing it among the larger loricariids and well above the size of the dwarf wood-eaters that dominate the aquarium trade. As in all members of the family, the body is encased in overlapping bony scutes and the mouth is a ventral suckermouth adapted to clinging to hard surfaces in current.
Detailed external descriptive characters beyond overall size are not reproduced here; the most thorough morphological account is the redescription in Armbruster (1998), which should be consulted for diagnostic features. Habitat
The species is endemic to the Paraíba do Sul River basin of southeastern Brazil. It is a freshwater, demersal, tropical fish associated with areas of moderate to strong water current, typically over rocky substrate — the rheophilic habit shared across the Rhinelepis group.
Like other members of the genus Pogonopoma, it is a facultative air-breather, able to supplement gill respiration with aerial gas exchange, an adaptation that suits turbulent, variably oxygenated river habitats. Detailed water-chemistry measurements from its native range are not available in the sources reviewed.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Pogonopoma parahybae is sparse. There is no body of reliable husbandry experience to summarise. Any keeping of the species would need to reflect its rheophilic biology: a large tank with strong, well-oxygenated flow over rockwork. Given its Vulnerable status and restricted range, it is best regarded as a fish for conservation and research contexts rather than the home aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pogonopoma parahybae as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(iii), with the assessment dated 18 May 2022. The Vulnerable listing and the B1 criterion reflect a restricted geographic range — the species is confined to the single Paraíba do Sul River basin — combined with a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat.
The Paraíba do Sul is one of the most heavily used river systems in southeastern Brazil, draining densely populated and industrialised catchments and subject to pollution, water abstraction, damming, and habitat alteration. For a fish dependent on rocky, fast-flowing reaches, such modification of the river's flow regime and substrate is a direct threat. The combination of single-basin endemism and ongoing habitat degradation is what places this species in a threatened category, in contrast to its more widespread relative Rhinelepis strigosa.
