One of the few Hypostomus species native to the coastal Atlantic drainages of southeastern Brazil, Hypostomus affinis is a medium-to-large benthic armoured catfish tied to the rocky and sandy-rocky riverbeds of the Paraíba do Sul and neighbouring basins. Described by Franz Steindachner in 1877 from multiple southeastern Brazilian rivers, it remains a useful reminder that some of South America's finest pleco biodiversity lies not in Amazonia but in the river systems that drain directly to the Atlantic.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus affinis was formally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1877 in the Sitzungsberichte der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften (vol. 74, 1st division, p. 685). Steindachner's original type series was collected from multiple southeastern Brazilian river systems, including the Rio Mucury, the Rio São Antonio, and material attributed to the Rio Paraíba do Sul. The type locality was subsequently restricted by lectotype designation to Campos, in the Rio Paraíba do Sul basin, by Mazzoni et al. (1994). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Hypostomus affinis (Steindachner, 1877); the original combination Plecostomus affinis is treated as a synonym.

The genus Hypostomus is the largest and most taxonomically complex genus within Loricariidae, containing well over 140 valid species spread across most of South America east of the Andes. Armbruster (2004) places Hypostomus within subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Hypostomini. Molecular work by Montoya-Burgos et al. (1997) included 12S and 16S mitochondrial rRNA sequences from H. affinis in a broader Loricariidae phylogeny (GenBank accessions Y08288, Y08336); further D-loop sequence data (AJ318358) featured the species in a Hypostomus-focused molecular phylogeny by Montoya-Burgos and Weber. No L-number has been assigned to this species — it pre-dates the hobby registration system and is not a regular export item.

Morphology

Hypostomus affinis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 15.5 in SL (Burgess, 1989; Ferraris, 2007), making it one of the larger members of the genus and placing it squarely in the 'large pleco' category for aquarium purposes. The body follows the typical Hypostomus bauplan: strongly dorsoventrally flattened ventrally, with a robust, arched dorsal profile and the entire dorsal and lateral surfaces covered in overlapping bony scutes bearing odontodes. The ventral surface is unarmoured and paler in colour.

Coloration is variable but generally brownish to olive, with darker spots or a mottled reticulation on most of the body and fins. The pattern tends to be finer and more distinct in juveniles, becoming more diffuse in large adults. The dorsal fin is moderately tall with a straight to slightly concave posterior margin; the pectoral spines are stout. The caudal fin is lunate in large adults.

The head is broad and flat, with the mouth positioned ventrally — the defining loricariid feature implied by the genus name. Teeth are bicuspid to tricuspid and relatively robust, suited to scraping algae and biofilm from hard surfaces. No L-number has been formally assigned. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail in the literature for this species; as in many Hypostomus, males of breeding age likely develop more prominent odontodes on the pectoral spines and interopercular region, and females become noticeably distended when gravid.

Habitat

Hypostomus affinis is endemic to coastal Atlantic drainages of southeastern Brazil. The primary distribution encompasses the Paraíba do Sul basin (states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais), and the species has also been recorded from the adjacent Rio Doce basin, including the Piracicaba tributary (Minas Gerais / Espírito Santo), and from the Rio Mucury system. These are Atlantic-slope rivers that flow independently to the sea — a biogeographically distinct province from the Amazonian or Orinoco basins.

Within these systems, H. affinis occupies a broad range of microhabitats. Field data and published accounts describe it from large and small rivers alike, in both lentic (slow, pooled) and lotic (rapid, riffle) sections, preferring rocky to sandy-rocky substrate. Juveniles are particularly associated with riparian vegetation fringing these habitats. The Paraíba do Sul is a warm subtropical river; water temperatures in the lower reaches typically range from approximately 68 °F in cooler months to 82 °F or more in summer, with pH varying from slightly acidic to circumneutral and moderate hardness typical of Brazilian Atlantic slope systems. The species is classified as facultative air-breathing within the genus — an adaptation common to Hypostomus that allows individuals to supplement gill respiration by gulping air under low-oxygen conditions.

Feeding

Like all Hypostomus, H. affinis is primarily an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. The ventrally positioned, sucker-like mouth with bicuspid teeth is well adapted for rasping algae, periphyton, and associated organic detritus from submerged rock and wood surfaces. In the mixed rocky and sandy habitats this species frequents, it also ingests organic sediment, detritus, and microinvertebrates associated with the substrate.

The species is not a dedicated xylophage in the manner of Panaqolus or Panaque — wood may be rasped incidentally for biofilm rather than as a dietary staple. In the aquarium, adults are best fed on a largely vegetarian diet: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, spinach) are all appropriate. Occasional offerings of meaty foods such as bloodworm or Daphnia are accepted and beneficial for variety. Given its adult size, this species generates significant waste, and heavy feeding must be balanced with robust filtration and regular water changes.

Mating

Detailed courtship data specific to H. affinis in the wild or aquarium are not recorded in the published literature; the following is inferred from the reproductive biology of the genus. FishBase notes asynchronous ovarian development in the species, indicating females may ripen batches of eggs at different times rather than all at once — a pattern consistent with multiple spawning episodes per season in response to environmental cues, particularly the seasonal flooding and temperature changes characteristic of the southeastern Brazilian river systems.

As in other Hypostomus, males are expected to be the territory-holding sex, selecting and defending nest sites — typically burrows excavated in soft riverbank substrate or tight rock crevices. The elaborate elongation of odontodes on breeding males, seen in many Hypostomus, serves both as a signal of condition to females and as a weapon in male-male rivalry. Given the species' large size, pairs or groups would require substantial aquarium space to exhibit anything approaching natural pre-spawning behaviour.

Breeding

Hypostomus affinis has not been reported as captively bred on PlanetCatfish or in the aquarium literature consulted. Reproduction in wild Hypostomus populations in Atlantic-slope Brazilian rivers broadly follows the pattern documented for the wider genus: spawning is seasonal, timed to the onset of the warm wet season (typically October–March in southeastern Brazil), when rising water temperatures and photoperiod shifts trigger reproductive readiness.

In the field, loricariid fish in this group excavate burrows in soft clay and sand banks, and the male guards the clutch within the burrow, aerating the eggs with fin movements. Fecundity in Hypostomus is moderate to high; Brazilian Atlantic slope populations of Hypostomus species studied have been recorded producing clutches of several hundred to over a thousand adhesive eggs. The Mazzoni et al. (1994) study involved H. affinis from the Paraíba do Sul and documented aspects of its population biology, contributing to the lectotype restriction. Captive breeding of large Hypostomus is uncommon in the hobby and would require a very large aquarium with appropriate burrowing substrate or cave surrogates.

In the aquarium

With a maximum recorded SL of nearly 15.5 in, H. affinis requires a large aquarium — a minimum of 105 US gal for a single adult is reasonable, and a 600-litre or larger system is preferable for long-term welfare. This is emphatically not a beginner's species, nor a 'starter pleco' in any practical sense.

The tank should replicate the rocky and mixed substrate character of its home rivers: smooth to coarse gravel and pebble substrate, large rounded boulders for shelter and territory, and robust décor that will not be easily displaced by a large, powerful fish. Driftwood is beneficial as a shelter and supplementary foraging surface, though H. affinis does not require it in the way that dedicated xylophages do. Plants are likely to be uprooted by this species in the course of normal foraging; attached species such as Anubias or Bolbitis on wood or rock are preferable to rooted plants.

Water parameters should reflect the subtropical Atlantic-slope origin: temperature 68–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness. This is notably cooler than many Amazonian plecos — temperatures consistently above 82 °F risk chronic physiological stress. Filtration must be powerful; large plecos produce substantial waste. Weekly water changes of at least 25–30% are advisable.

H. affinis is a solitary and territorial species with conspecifics; keeping two adults together requires a very large aquarium with clear habitat separation. With peaceful, robust fish of unrelated body plan (large tetras, cichlids not small enough to be harassed), it is generally compatible. It is unsuitable for community tanks with small, delicate fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hypostomus affinis as Least Concern in 2018, reflecting the species' reasonably broad distribution across multiple Atlantic-slope basins in southeastern Brazil and the absence of a documented population decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category.

Nevertheless, the species' range lies entirely within one of Brazil's most heavily populated and industrialised regions. The Paraíba do Sul basin in particular has been subject to intensive land use change, agricultural runoff, urban effluent, and water extraction for decades; the river's condition in its middle and lower reaches has been a long-running environmental concern in Brazil. The Rio Doce suffered catastrophic pollution from a tailings dam failure in 2015 (the Mariana disaster) that killed aquatic life across much of the basin. While H. affinis populations in healthy headwater and tributary systems may be stable, the cumulative pressures on its Atlantic-slope habitat warrant continued monitoring. No commercial export trade is associated with this species.
