Loricariichthys castaneus was described by Castelnau in 1855, with the type locality given as the neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro. The parenthetical authority indicates that the original combination differed from the current placement — the species was subsequently moved to Loricariichthys Bleeker, 1862. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Loricariichthys castaneus (Castelnau, 1855) as the valid name. A junior synonym is Loricariichthys spixii (Steindachner, 1881), which falls within this species' concept.
The genus Loricariichthys belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae within Loricariidae, a placement consistent with its elongate body form, flattened underside, and the lip-brooding reproductive behaviour shared across the genus. The species epithet castaneus derives from the Latin for chestnut, presumably referring to the brownish body coloration.
Morphology
Loricariichthys castaneus is a large species, reaching up to 15.5 in total length (TL) — among the largest members of its subfamily. The body is strongly depressed and elongated, armoured with overlapping bony scutes, and tapers into a thread-like caudal extension in keeping with the whiptail body plan. Overall colouration is brownish, consistent with the species name.
The most conspicuous morphological feature is the sexually dimorphic lower lip of the male. In mature males this structure is dramatically hypertrophied — visibly enlarged and thickened compared to females — forming the attachment surface for the egg clutch during brooding. This character is the hallmark of the genus and is diagnostic for adult males in the field or aquarium. Habitat
Loricariichthys castaneus is distributed along the coastal river systems of southeastern Brazil, from roughly southern São Paulo state northward to northern Espírito Santo, including the Paraíba do Sul River basin. It is a demersal freshwater species, living in close association with the riverbed. The species is recorded from Lajes Reservoir in Rio de Janeiro state, indicating some tolerance for impounded lentic environments in addition to the flowing streams of its native drainage.
No precise water-chemistry parameters from field collections have been published in accessible sources. The coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil are broadly subtropical to tropical, with water temperatures likely ranging from approximately 64–82 °F seasonally depending on altitude and latitude. As in other Loricariinae, the species is a facultative air-breather — an adaptation to the periodically hypoxic conditions common in warm, slow, or shallow river-margin environments.

The male's greatly enlarged lower lip is the defining morphological investment in this reproductive strategy. Prior to or during spawning, the male receives the egg mass and it attaches firmly to the hypertrophied lip surface — a behaviour documented across the genus Loricariichthys and representing an unusual form of male mouthbrooding in which the eggs are borne externally on a specialised lip surface rather than held inside the buccal cavity. Females in the Lajes Reservoir study showed asynchronous oocyte development with oocyte diameters ranging from 27 µm (early previtellogenic) to approximately 3,460 µm (ripe, pre-spawning), indicating continuous recruitment of eggs to the maturing cohort across a prolonged breeding season.
Breeding
Loricariichthys castaneus breeds across most of the year, with a peak spawning period in August–September and reduced activity in April–May — a late-austral-winter peak consistent with rising temperatures and river conditions in southeastern Brazil. This information comes from a reproductive biology study based on 226 specimens collected monthly from Lajes Reservoir over a full year (Gomes & Araújo, ResearchGate).
Following spawning, the male carries the entire egg clutch adhered to his swollen lower lip until the larvae hatch. This lip-brooding strategy — unique among loricariids to the genus Loricariichthys — provides the developing embryos with direct parental attendance, including the oxygen-enriching effect of the male's ventilation movements and physical protection from predators and substrate disturbance. The male's ability to move and feed is reduced during active brooding given the clutch attached to his mouth region.

Loricariichthys castaneus appears very rarely in the ornamental fish trade and carries no L-number or widely used common name. Its large adult size — approaching 15.5 in TL — means it is suitable only for substantial aquaria; a minimum tank length of 59 in is advisable for a single adult, with greater length if a pair or group is kept.
Substrate should be fine-grained sand or smooth gravel, allowing the fish to rest flush with the bottom in the manner typical of its family. Flat rocks, root tangles, and driftwood provide cover and resting surfaces. Water temperature in the range of 68–79 °F and a circumneutral pH (6.5–7.5) are appropriate given the southeastern Brazilian coastal river origin, though precise tolerance limits for this species are not established in accessible literature.
The lip-brooding behaviour of breeding males is a notable display feature for anyone fortunate enough to observe it in captivity. Males actively brooding a clutch should not be disturbed; adequate space and cover are important to minimise stress. Diet follows standard loricariid practice: algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables as the core, with occasional small invertebrate supplements.
As a large detritivore, this species produces significant metabolic waste; robust filtration and regular partial water changes are essential.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Loricariichthys castaneus as Least Concern in 2018. At that point no significant evidence of population decline was available to justify a higher threat category.
The species' known range — southeastern Brazilian coastal drainages from São Paulo to Espírito Santo, plus the Paraíba do Sul basin — encompasses one of Brazil's most densely populated and industrialised regions. The Paraíba do Sul River in particular has historically suffered from industrial pollution, domestic effluent, deforestation of riparian buffers, and extensive water extraction for metropolitan São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The Lajes Reservoir population studied by Gomes and Araújo represents a species that has persisted in an impounded environment, suggesting some resilience to hydrological alteration, but the long-term cumulative effects of water quality degradation on this and related species in southeastern Brazil deserve continued attention.
