A heavily armoured loricariid from the coastal drainages of Suriname, Pseudacanthicus fordii belongs to the formidably spiny Acanthicus clade — a group defined by odontode-covered bodies and a carnivore-leaning palate that sets them apart from the algae-rasping majority of plecos. Rarely encountered in the trade and unassessed for population size, this species remains one of the lesser-known members of an already under-studied genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudacanthicus fordii was formally described by Albert Günther in 1868 in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 4, volume 1, article 56, page 476) from material assigned to the coastal drainages of Suriname. Günther placed it in the genus Chaetostomus as Chaetostomus fordii; it was later redescribed by Charles Tate Regan in 1904 (page 261), and the combination Pseudacanthicus fordii is now the valid name recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

The genus Pseudacanthicus belongs to the Acanthicus clade within subfamily Hypostominae, one of the five major subfamilial groupings of the armoured catfish family Loricariidae. Pseudacanthicus is distinguished from the closely related Acanthicus by the presence of two small plates in the posterior area of the compound pterotic (versus one or absent in Acanthicus) and by narrow premaxillae bearing a small number of elongate, curved teeth. The genus name derives from Greek pseud- ('false') and akanthikos ('spiny' or 'thorny'), meaning 'False Acanthicus' — a reference to the superficial resemblance to that genus combined with a set of diagnostic anatomical differences.

The species epithet fordii honours George Henry Ford (1809–1876), a South African-born scientific illustrator whose meticulous drawings accompanied many of Günther's descriptive works at the British Museum of Natural History. Ford's illustrations of the type material formed part of the original description.

Morphology

Pseudacanthicus fordii reaches a reported maximum of 9 in total length (TL) / approximately 9 in standard length (SL), placing it among the larger members of the genus, though wild-caught adults at this size are uncommon in trade or museum collections.

The body plan is characteristically Pseudacanthicus: heavily scuted, strongly keeled along the flanks, and studded with sharp, hypertrophied odontodes arranged in longitudinal rows along the body sides. The snout margin is likewise fringed with enlarged odontodes, giving the fish a bristling, cactus-like silhouette — the source of the informal 'cactus pleco' label applied to the genus as a whole. Within the Acanthicus clade, members are diagnosed from other loricariids by this combination of pronounced lateral keels and dense odontode coverage, which functions as passive armour against predators rather than for display or intraspecific combat.

The dorsal fin has eight or more rays. Infraorbital count is seven to eight. There are five branched anal-fin rays. Dentition is distinctive: the premaxillae are narrow and bear a small number of elongate, curved teeth — contrasting with the broad, spatulate, wood-rasping teeth of xylophagous genera such as Panaque and Panaqolus. This tooth morphology is consistent with a diet of protein-rich invertebrates rather than plant material or wood.

Sexual dimorphism in Pseudacanthicus generally follows the loricariid pattern: breeding males develop more extensive and elaborate odontodes, particularly along the interopercular region and dorsal surface, while females are broader through the abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

Pseudacanthicus fordii is known from coastal river drainages of Suriname, in the Guyana coastal river region of northeastern South America. These rivers drain the Guiana Shield — an ancient geological formation of deeply weathered Precambrian rock — and typically carry tea-stained to clear, soft, acidic water. Detailed field data specific to P. fordii are not available in the published literature, but the coastal rivers of Suriname broadly share the characteristics of Guiana Shield drainages: low conductivity, pH tending toward the acid side of neutral, warm temperatures, and slow to moderate flow in the lowland reaches where loricariids are most diverse.

As a demersal loricariid, P. fordii is expected to occupy benthic microhabitats associated with submerged wood, rocky substrates, and root tangles — the structural refuges that provide both shelter and, in the case of wood, foraging substrate for biofilm and invertebrates.

Feeding

Pseudacanthicus fordii, like its congeners, is best described as a carnivore-leaning omnivore rather than the algae-rasper or wood-eater associated with many popular plecos. The narrow, curved dentition is adapted for grasping and processing invertebrate prey — crustaceans such as prawns and molluscs such as chopped mussel are accepted with particular enthusiasm in captivity, per hobbyist observations shared on PlanetCatfish. High-quality sinking pellets that include meat-based protein are also taken. A moderate proportion of vegetable matter — algae wafers, blanched vegetables — is recommended to round out the diet; an exclusively protein diet is not ideal for long-term health.

In the wild, the diet likely consists of invertebrates living within or on wood and rocky substrate: aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, and molluscs, supplemented by biofilm and organic detritus. This foraging niche contrasts with the xylophagous Panaque lineage and the aufwuchs-scraping Hypostomus or Otocinclus, placing Pseudacanthicus in a distinct trophic guild among loricariids.

Mating

No breeding reports for Pseudacanthicus fordii are documented in the hobby literature or on the PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog as of the most recent record update. What follows reflects general Pseudacanthicus and loricariid biology.

Males of Pseudacanthicus species are strongly territorial and will defend cave sites and preferred areas of the tank against conspecific males and other similarly sized fish. The elaborate odontode armature of the genus appears to function partly in intraspecific competition: rivals posture and, if necessary, lock mouths or scrape odontodes against one another. Gravid females, distinguishable by a broader abdominal profile, are courted and guided by the male toward a prepared spawning site, typically a cave or crevice. The male's defensive spines, while formidable, do not prevent harassment by faster-moving fish of similar size — this is a species best kept with appropriate tankmates rather than in crowded community settings.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Pseudacanthicus fordii has been documented in the published hobby record. By inference from congeners and from the broader loricariid pattern, breeding in Pseudacanthicus species is expected to follow the cave-spawning, paternal-guarding model: eggs are deposited within a defended cavity, and the male remains with the clutch, fanning it to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile or fungused eggs. Fry are guarded through early development until they become mobile and begin foraging independently.

Given the lack of confirmed captive breeding reports, specific details of clutch size, incubation duration, or fry care for this species are not known. Aquarists attempting to breed P. fordii would be working with very limited precedent.

In the aquarium

Pseudacanthicus fordii is an infrequently encountered species in the ornamental trade; it does not carry an L-number and is not commercially produced in large numbers. When available, specimens are typically wild-caught imports from Suriname.

The combination of a potential size of 9 in TL and pronounced territorial aggression toward conspecifics and similarly shaped fish means that an adult requires a generously sized aquarium — a minimum of 55 US gal is a reasonable lower bound for a single adult, with more space needed if tankmates are included. Multiple cave structures, submerged wood, and overhangs are essential: the fish needs visual break-up of the tank interior to reduce line-of-sight aggression, and caves provide both refuge and potential spawning sites. PlanetCatfish notes that the species will 'sun' on top of furnishings when comfortable, suggesting it uses elevated open perches when it feels secure.

Water conditions should reflect the Surinamese coastal drainage origin: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.2, soft to moderately soft water. Good filtration and oxygenation are important; the fish produces meaningful waste relative to its size, though PlanetCatfish notes it is less waste-producing than a Panaque or Pterygoplichthys of equivalent length.

Diet in the aquarium should be protein-centred: high-quality meat-based sinking foods, occasional prawns or chopped mussel, supplemented with algae wafers and vegetable matter. Heavy reliance on purely vegetarian foods is not appropriate for this genus.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudacanthicus fordii as Data Deficient (DD) in January 2021. The designation reflects insufficient information on population size, density, and trend rather than a confirmed absence of threats. The species is known from the coastal drainages of Suriname — a geographically circumscribed range — and the lack of systematic survey data from these rivers means that extinction risk cannot currently be evaluated.

Surinamese rivers face pressures from gold mining (a significant industry in the interior), agricultural runoff, and deforestation in the coastal lowlands, all of which can degrade water quality and benthic habitat. Whether P. fordii is impacted by these pressures is unknown. The Data Deficient listing should not be interpreted as indicating the species is safe; it indicates only that the available data are insufficient to place it in a threat category.
