Taxonomy & naming
Pseudacanthicus leopardus was first described by American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1914 as Stoneiella leopardus, based on specimens from the Rupununi River in what was then British Guiana (now southwestern Guyana), collected at approximately 2°–3°N, 59°W in the Rupununi highlands. In 1980, Isaäc Isbrücker transferred the species to the genus Pseudacanthicus, establishing the current valid name Pseudacanthicus leopardus (Fowler, 1914); the parenthetical authority reflects the original placement under a different genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Stoneiella leopardus Fowler, 1914 as the basionym and the valid name as Pseudacanthicus leopardus (Fowler, 1914).
The L-number situation is a persistent source of trade confusion. L114 was assigned in the early 1990s to large, spotted Pseudacanthicus exported from the Rio Demini, a tributary of the lower Rio Negro in Amazonas state, Brazil. FishBase and Seriously Fish list L114 fish under Pseudacanthicus cf. leopardus — meaning the Demini fish is believed to be related but is not confirmed as the same species as Fowler's Rupununi animal. The nominal P. leopardus is associated with L600 and LDA073, applied to fish whose origin traces more closely to the Rupununi–Rio Branco–Rio Takutu drainage system in the Guiana region. Morphologically, the Demini (L114) fish differs from true P. leopardus in being somewhat more compact-headed, having slightly different colouration (more orange on fins), and lacking the flat, low head profile characteristic of the Rupununi type.
A more recently described congener from the Rio Xingu, Pseudacanthicus pitanga Chamon & Sousa 2017, adds further complexity to the genus; six valid Pseudacanthicus species are currently recognised, distributed in Amazonian and Guianan drainages.
Morphology
Pseudacanthicus leopardus is a large, heavily built loricariid armoured across the entire dorsal surface, flanks and all fin rays with dense, sharp odontodes — the cactus-like texture that characterises the genus. The body is slightly more dorso-ventrally flattened than other large Pseudacanthicus, with a notably low, wide head profile, particularly in the true P. leopardus from the Rupununi drainage.
Ground colour is pale orange-brown to tan, overlaid with large, irregular black blotches that partially anastomose to create a leopard-like or honeycomb pattern across the head, body and fins. All fins carry black blotches and, in many specimens, an orange or orange-yellow flush on the fin margins and base of the leading rays — a feature more prominent in the Demini (L114) form, which consistently shows a distinct orange seam on the dorsal fin. The Rupununi P. leopardus tends to have a cooler, flatter colouration with less orange.
Maximum size for the nominal P. leopardus is about 12.5 in standard length, the figure given by PlanetCatfish's Cat-eLog; FishBase's 6 in TL entry is an apparent data error contradicted by the catfish literature and by hobbyist reports. The Demini (L114) cf. form is generally cited at roughly 8–10 in SL.
Sexual dimorphism follows the typical Pseudacanthicus pattern: males develop more elongated interopercular odontodes and more prominent body spines; females are broader-bodied when gravid. Genital papilla examination is the most reliable sexing method.
Habitat
The nominal Pseudacanthicus leopardus (Fowler's original material) inhabits the Rupununi River system in southwestern Guyana, with its range extending into the seasonally connected upper Rio Branco drainage in Roraima state, Brazil — including the Rio Takutu. The Rupununi–Rio Branco connection is seasonal: during flood events, the Rupununi (an Amazon-basin tributary of the Rio Essequibo) overtops the watershed divide and flows into the Amazon system via the Rio Branco, a lateral connection that enables faunal exchange between the two drainage systems. Records from the lower Rio Negro near Manaus and from the Rio Demini are associated with the unconfirmed cf. form (L114) rather than the nominal species.
The species inhabits rocky river sections with moderate to fast current, sheltering in boulder crevices and rocky caves. Water in the Rupununi system is typically warm (75–81 °F), soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–7.0), and clear to dark-stained (blackwater conditions prevail in parts of the Rio Negro system that the cf. form occupies).
The Demini cf. leopardus (L114) is collected near Barcelos, Amazonas state, in the Rio Demini tributary of the lower Rio Negro — a blackwater, extremely soft, acidic river with high temperature and very low mineral content. Trade collection of L114 is centred on the Barcelos ornamental fish market, one of the most important collection hubs for Rio Negro loricariids.
Feeding
Pseudacanthicus leopardus and the related cf. leopardus (L114) are carnivore-leaning in their dietary preferences. Wild diet is believed to consist primarily of aquatic invertebrates — molluscs, crustaceans, insect larvae — supplemented with biofilm and detrital organic matter. Gut content analysis is not published for P. leopardus specifically, but allied Pseudacanthicus species consistently show a carnivore-leaning profile, and hobbyist experience with the L114 form confirms a preference for meaty foods.
In the aquarium, meaty sinking foods should form the core diet: large bloodworm, frozen mussels, cockles, prawn, earthworms, and similar invertebrate-origin foods. Sinking carnivore-formula catfish pellets are accepted. Vegetables (courgette, sweet potato) are useful supplementary foods a few times weekly for nutritional balance; algae wafers are eaten but should not be the primary offering.
The species is a vigorous feeder that will aggressively assert priority at feeding time, potentially excluding smaller or more timid tankmates. Feeding after lights-out, when the pleco is naturally most active, and providing multiple feeding sites helps distribute food access in a community setting.
Mating
The limited captive breeding records for the Pseudacanthicus cf. leopardus (L114) form from New Zealand and European hobbyists provide the best available information on courtship behaviour for this complex. The mode is consistent with other Pseudacanthicus: cave-spawning preceded by territorial male establishment and female assessment of the male's cave site.
Males in breeding condition are intensely territorial; interopercular odontodes become more pronounced, and the male defends a substantial territory around his chosen cave structure — typically a rock crevice or large enclosed pipe of appropriate diameter. Rival males are met with lateral spreading, dorsal erection and body-barging; actual biting and odontode-inflicted scratching can occur in undersized tanks. Breeding pairs must be housed with adequate territory separation.
Females in spawning condition display increased body depth and broadened ventral profile. The male guides the receptive female into the cave; spawning occurs inside and the female departs, leaving the male with the clutch. Temperature in the 75–81 °F range and high dissolved oxygen appear to be prerequisite conditions; water quality should be excellent and current strong.
Breeding
Captive breeding of the Pseudacanthicus cf. leopardus (L114) form has been achieved on several occasions in New Zealand (as documented by Aquarium World NZ) and multiple times in Europe and North America; records for the nominal P. leopardus from Rupununi-origin fish are not separately documented in the primary hobbyist literature, as trade fish of confirmed Rupununi origin are extremely rare.
The breeding mode is cave-spawning with paternal care. The male remains inside or at the entrance of the spawning cave, fanning the clutch with pectoral fin movements to maintain oxygenation. Clutch sizes for Pseudacanthicus species are generally modest relative to their body size; aquarium records for L114 suggest clutches of 30–80 eggs, with larger clutches from larger females. Incubation at 77–81 °F takes approximately 5–8 days. Fry are relatively large at hatch and retain a substantial yolk sac for the first few days after hatching.
Free-swimming fry should be offered newly hatched brine shrimp, microworms and micro-sinking pellets immediately. Excellent water quality is essential during fry development; daily small water changes are advisable. The male should be left with the brood unless he shows signs of consuming the eggs, which can occur if conditions are suboptimal or the male is stressed.
In the aquarium
Pseudacanthicus leopardus (and the closely related cf. leopardus / L114 Demini form) requires a tank designed for a large, active carnivore-leaning catfish with strong territorial instincts. An adult needs an aquarium of at minimum 65–80 US gal as a single specimen, with a 59 in base length; a mated pair requires substantially more space with multiple visually separated cave territories.
Water conditions: temperature 75–82 °F (the cf. leopardus / L114 form from the Rio Demini tolerates a narrow range toward the warmer end of this window well), pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately soft water. Strong current and high dissolved oxygen are important; the species is not tolerant of stagnant, oxygen-depleted conditions. A powerful external canister filter or sump, plus powerheads generating 4–6× tank volume per hour, is appropriate.
The species is highly territorial toward conspecifics and other large plecos competing for the same cave resources. Single-specimen keeping is the default for most hobbyists. Large South American cichlids, larger tetras and robust armoured catfish are suitable companions provided the tank is genuinely large enough to provide line-of-sight separation.
Decoration must include at least one solid, fully enclosed cave structure — rock caves, slate formations, or commercial pleco caves — sized for the fish to comfortably occupy and turn around inside. Driftwood is not a dietary necessity (unlike wood-eating Panaqolus) but provides secondary shelter and biofilm surface. Substrate should be easy to clean (fine sand or bare bottom in breeding setups).
The colouration of juveniles — orange-tan base with bold black blotch patterning and orange fin margins — is among the most attractive in the genus; adults retain the leopard spotting but the orange typically fades. This is a medium-to-large species requiring genuine specialist attention rather than a casual community pleco.
Conservation
Pseudacanthicus leopardus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN Red List (assessment November 2020). The assessment notes the species' reasonably wide distribution across the Rupununi, upper Rio Branco and adjacent Amazonian drainages, and records no evidence of significant population-level decline.
The bulk of the trade commerce described as 'leopard cactus pleco' is conducted using the Demini (Rio Negro) cf. form (L114), which is collected near Barcelos, Amazonas state. Collection of Loricariidae around Barcelos is substantial and supports a significant portion of the local ornamental fish economy. The Demini form is not a formally described species and therefore carries no IUCN assessment of its own; its conservation status relative to harvest pressure is unknown.
The nominal P. leopardus from Rupununi-origin specimens is rarely seen in trade; most fish sold under the name are the Demini cf. form or variants. Given the ongoing taxonomic uncertainty around the true distribution of P. leopardus versus its regional variants, and the absence of population trend data for any form, precautionary sourcing from captive-bred stock is advisable where available. Tank breeding of L114 forms has been achieved and tank-bred specimens occasionally appear in specialist markets.
