Few loricariids earn their common name as honestly as the chameleon whiptail. Pseudohemiodon apithanos can shift its body colour from pale sand to deep mahogany in seconds, matching riverbottom detritus with an accuracy that has startled collectors reaching into what looked like empty substrate. That cryptic talent is backed by an equally startling reproductive trick: the male broods the eggs wedged beneath his enlarged lower lip rather than in a cave — an abdomino-lip incubation system unique within the family.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudohemiodon apithanos was described by Ione J. H. Isbrücker and Han Nijssen in 1978, published in Beaufortia (volume 27, number 339, page 195, figures 6–8). The holotype — ANSP 134370 — was collected from Río Conejo, a tributary of Río San Miguel, near Santa Cecilia at approximately 0°06'N, 76°51'W, Napo Province, Ecuador. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the name as currently valid; the combination has no synonyms.

The generic name Pseudohemiodon translates from Greek as 'false half-tooth' (pseudes = false, hemi = half, odous = teeth), distinguishing the genus from the closely related Hemiodon by the arrangement of the oral dentition. The species epithet apithanos derives from the ancient Greek apíthanos, meaning 'incredible' or 'unbelievable' — a direct allusion to the extraordinary variability of the colour pattern, which Isbrücker and Nijssen noted was unique among the subfamily's known species at the time of description.

Within Loricariidae, Pseudohemiodon is placed in subfamily Loricariinae (Armbruster, 2004), the whiptail group characterised by elongated, depressed bodies, thread-like caudal filaments, and a reduced number of fin rays compared with the hypostomines. The genus contains a modest number of species distributed across the western Amazon and Orinoco drainages; P. apithanos is the widest-ranging of the Colombian-Ecuadorian-Peruvian clade.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 5.5 in standard length (SL) per the primary reference (Ferraris in Reis et al. 2003), making P. apithanos one of the larger Pseudohemiodon species. The body is extremely depressed — flattened top-to-bottom — with a very wide, rounded head that tapers gradually to a slender, whip-like caudal peduncle. The caudal fin is broad and somewhat fan-shaped; the lower caudal lobe typically bears a filamentous extension in adults. The mouth is ventrally positioned and forms a broad, flat sucking disc. Pectoral and pelvic fins are splayed laterally in the typical loricariin fashion, allowing the fish to lie flush against sandy substrates.

The most remarkable feature of the species is its extreme chromatophore activity. Ground colouration ranges across individuals and contexts from very pale cream through yellow-tan to dark chocolate brown and near-black, with the dorsal scutes and skin often showing a blotched or marbled pattern of darker patches on a lighter base. This pattern is not fixed: fish actively lighten or darken in response to substrate, light levels, and arousal state, earning the common name 'chameleon'. The eponymous variability in pattern was literally the character that gave the species its Latin epithet.

The lower lip of breeding males is greatly enlarged relative to females, forming a fleshy, cup-like brood platform used for egg incubation (see Breeding). This sexual modification is visible in large adults and provides the clearest field indicator of sex. Females lack the lip hypertrophy and tend to be broader-bodied across the abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

The Catalog of Fishes places P. apithanos in the Napo, Pastaza, and Tigre river drainages of the upper Amazon basin in Ecuador and Peru; Provenzano et al. (2022) additionally report it from Venezuela. The type locality — Río Conejo near Santa Cecilia, Napo Province, Ecuador — lies at the piedmont of the Andes in a zone where highland streams spread onto the western Amazonian lowlands. This region experiences strong seasonality: high water brings cooler, more dilute, and more turbid conditions; low water exposes sandy and gravelly shoals with clearer, warmer water.

The species is characteristically found over fine sand and silt substrates in areas of gentle to moderate current, often in the shallower margins of larger rivers or in sandy-bottomed tributaries. Leaf litter accumulations and submerged detritus are important microhabitat components, as the fish actively uses these as both foraging substrate and camouflage cover. It is not a rapids species; water flow is typically moderate and the fish lies flat on the substrate rather than clinging to rock faces.

Water chemistry at Ecuadorian collection sites is generally soft and moderately acidic to neutral: temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F are typical during the dry season, with pH values around 6.5–7.5 and low conductivity consistent with Andean-foothill whitewater mixing with blackwater. The TFH breeding account (Jan/Feb 2016) describes keeping the species in a sand-substrate tank with moderate flow as central to its welfare.

Feeding

In nature, P. apithanos is a detritivore and omnivore of sandy riverbottoms. The broad oral disc is pressed against the substrate as the fish shuffles forward, sieving organic matter — fine detritus, diatoms, desmids, and small invertebrates — from the sand surface and interstitial spaces. The dentition is fine and multi-cusped, adapted for scraping soft biofilm rather than gouging hard surfaces. Sandy substrates appear to be an essential foraging context in the wild and in aquaria.

In captivity the species is not difficult to feed. High-quality sinking foods form the dietary backbone: algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking tablets, and blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato) are readily accepted. Frozen and live invertebrate foods — bloodworm, white worm, Daphnia, artemia — are taken eagerly and are important for conditioning breeding adults. The species is predominantly carnivorous in its invertebrate intake relative to many other loricariids; a solely algae-based diet is insufficient. Scotcat notes the diet preference explicitly as algae wafers with sinking tablets and frozen bloodworm and shrimp.

The key practical requirement is the substrate itself: a sand bed of at least 1–1.5 in depth allows natural sifting behaviour and appears to reduce stress significantly. Fish kept over bare glass or coarse gravel often become withdrawn and fail to thrive.

Mating

Courtship in P. apithanos has been observed in aquaria and described in a TFH Digital article (Jan/Feb 2016) as well as in multiple PlanetCatfish breeding reports. Males become noticeably active around females during breeding condition, following them closely and displaying their enlarged lower lips. The male's colour often intensifies during courtship, and both sexes may exhibit rapid colour-cycling behaviour during the pairing period.

The male appears to select a spawning site over fine sand or a flat surface; there is no cave or crevice involvement as in typical ancistrine cave-spawners. Fertilisation is believed to occur as the female deposits eggs and the male simultaneously positions himself to receive them against the lip surface, though the precise fertilisation mechanism in P. apithanos is not yet fully documented in the scientific literature.

Both sexes must be well-conditioned — fed a varied diet including live or frozen invertebrates — before breeding attempts are reliable. PlanetCatfish records 5 breeding reports for the species, and keepers consistently note that fine sand substrate and good water quality are prerequisites. Males and females can generally cohabit without aggression outside of active spawning periods.

Breeding

Pseudohemiodon apithanos is an abdomino-lip brooder: after spawning, the male carries the fertilised eggs wedged between his greatly enlarged lower lip and his ventral abdomen, forming a physical brood chamber. This mode of parental care is unusual within Loricariidae — the vast majority of the family are cave-spawners with paternal egg-fanning — and makes P. apithanos one of the most biologically distinctive members of the family available to aquarists.

Eggs are large relative to body size and pale in colour. The male carries them throughout incubation, which lasts approximately 10–14 days at typical tank temperatures of 79–82 °F. During this period the male eats little and may appear inactive for extended periods. The developing eggs are visible as a bulge beneath the head. On hatching, fry are large and immediately benthic; they begin feeding on microorganisms and biofilm very quickly.

The father continues to guard the fry in the early post-hatch period; fry can be seen sheltering beneath or near the male for several days. Removal of eggs or fry by the keeper risks abandonment. Fry can be raised on microworm, infusoria, and finely powdered algae-based foods; their cryptic colouration develops early and mirrors the adult pattern. The Scotcat source notes that the very large eggs are incubated by the male, confirming the abdomino-lip brooding system is well-established in the hobby literature.

In the aquarium

The chameleon whiptail is considered an advanced-level species, requiring specific setup and dietary conditions that beginner tanks rarely provide. The single most important requirement is a deep fine-sand substrate — at minimum 1.5–2 in of smooth, fine river sand, such as pool-filter sand or commercially produced aquarium sand. Without this, the fish cannot perform its natural sifting behaviour and typically becomes stressed, withdrawn, and prone to illness.

A tank of at least 30–40 US gal is appropriate for a single adult or a small group; additional floor space matters more than height. Water parameters should reflect the Ecuadorian origin: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, low to moderate hardness (under 15°dH), and good oxygenation with moderate current. Regular partial water changes (25–30% weekly) are essential. The species is sensitive to poor water quality and deteriorating conditions.

P. apithanos is peaceful toward other species and does not bother fish that are not directly competing for the same substrate area. Suitable tankmates include calm mid-water tetras, small cichlids from similar Amazonian drainages, pencilfish, and other non-aggressive species. Large, boisterous tankmates that constantly disturb the substrate are inappropriate. The species is most active at twilight and at night; daytime observations often show fish lying motionless and cryptically coloured, which alarms uninformed keepers who may mistake the stillness for illness.

Ornamental trade availability is sporadic; imports arrive occasionally from Ecuador and Peru. Wild-caught specimens are exported, and captive breeding in the hobby has been documented. Providing a breeding setup (dedicated breeding tank, fine sand, good conditioning diet) is advisable for those wishing to reproduce this species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudohemiodon apithanos as Least Concern in 2014 (Ortega Torres et al. 2016), citing its wide distribution across the western Amazon basin in Ecuador and Peru and the absence of evidence of significant population decline. The Scotcat reference notes that while its high demand for ornamental export may affect populations in some areas, this concern was flagged as needing updating at the time of the 2016 citation.

The species is collected commercially for the ornamental fish trade from Ecuador and Peru. The level of collection pressure on wild populations is not precisely quantified, but the fish's distribution across multiple river drainages (Napo, Pastaza, Tigre) provides some resilience. Captive breeding has been accomplished by a number of hobbyists and is documented on PlanetCatfish (5 registered breeding reports), which offers some potential to reduce dependence on wild imports if the captive population were to be developed commercially.

Broader threats to Amazonian lowland rivers — deforestation of riverbanks, agricultural sedimentation, and pollution — can reduce the quality of sandy-bottomed habitats that this species depends upon. No targeted conservation measures are currently in place; the assessment should be revisited in light of more recent collection data and any updated assessments of ornamental trade volume.
