Taxonomy & naming
Pseudohemiodon thorectes was formally described by Isaäc Johannes Hoedeman Isbrücker in 1975 in Beaufortia (volume 23, number 300, pages 87, figures 1–2). The holotype was collected west of Río Palacios, a tributary of the Río Mamoré, near Buena Vista, Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia (approximately 17°28'S, 63°37'W). No synonyms are listed; the species has remained monotypic under this name since its description. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Pseudohemiodon thorectes Isbrücker, 1975.
The genus Pseudohemiodon currently contains eight valid species as of a 2019 Zootaxa revision of the group, and belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae within Loricariidae. The genus name is compound Greek: pseudes (false) + hemi (half) + odous (teeth) — alluding to a resemblance to, but distinction from, the older genus Hemiodon. The species epithet thorectes derives from Greek thorax (breastplate or cuirass), a reference to the heavily armoured body.
Morphology
Pseudohemiodon thorectes is a small species, reaching 4.5 in standard length (SL); total length including the caudal filament is somewhat greater, reported at approximately 5 in. The body plan is the hallmark of the genus: extraordinarily flattened dorso-ventrally, almost paper-thin in lateral view, with a broad, spade-like head and a rostrum that projects forward of the ventral oral disc. The scute armour covering the body is complete and contributes to the 'breastplate' impression that the species epithet records.
The ventral surface is pale and entirely flat, designed for intimate contact with a sandy substrate. The fins are low and held flat against the body when resting. Aquarium photographs of the species show it partially buried in sand with only the top of the head and eyes visible — an illustration of how effectively the body plan serves its cryptic lifestyle. Detailed external morphological data beyond size and general form are limited in the published record for this species.
Habitat
Pseudohemiodon thorectes is known from the Mamoré River basin in Bolivia, an upper tributary of the Madeira drainage and therefore part of the Amazon system. The Río Mamoré flows north through the Bolivian lowlands (the Llanos de Mojos), a vast seasonally flooded savanna-forest mosaic, before crossing into Brazil. The type locality near Buena Vista, Santa Cruz, sits at the transition between the eastern Andes foothills and the Bolivian lowland plain.
This is sandy-substrate country. The Mamoré and its tributaries carry heavy sediment loads, particularly during the wet season, and their beds are characterised by shifting sandbars, sandy runs, and shallow braided channels. P. thorectes is a sand-bed specialist, using the substrate both as a foraging surface and as refuge — the species is documented burying itself in fine sand during the day, a behaviour visible in aquarium specimens and consistent with field habitat. No precise temperature or pH measurements specific to this species' microhabitat are on record; Mamoré lowland waters are generally warm (75–82 °F) and range from moderately soft and neutral to slightly alkaline depending on season and proximity to calcareous Andean runoff.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of 2.6 ± 0.2 for P. thorectes, consistent with a diet dominated by fine organic detritus, algal films scraped from sand grain surfaces, and associated micro-invertebrates. The oral disc is ventrally placed and adapted for contact feeding on flat surfaces. The species' nocturnally active foraging pattern — leaving the substrate after dark to feed — suggests it actively explores the sand surface for material that settles during the day.
In the aquarium, sand-bed whiptails of this type are best offered sinking foods placed directly on the substrate: fine algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, and blanched soft vegetables. The fish should not be expected to compete at the surface or mid-water. A fine-grained, clean sandy substrate that supports natural sifting behaviour is important for the animal's welfare.
Mating
No mating observations have been published for Pseudohemiodon thorectes specifically. Within Pseudohemiodon, the general loricariine pattern of male territory establishment and female choice is presumed, but the flat, open-substrate lifestyle of this genus differs from the cave-associated reproductive strategies of rock or wood-dwelling Loricariinae. Whether males defend sand patches, excavate depressions, or engage in other courtship behaviours is not documented for this species.
The genus Pseudohemiodon is notable for a remarkable form of paternal brood care in which the male carries developing eggs and larvae attached to his lips or body surface — a behaviour documented in at least some members of the genus (and more broadly among sand-dwelling Loricariinae). Whether P. thorectes exhibits lip-brooding or ventral body-brooding is not confirmed from published sources, but the genus-level association makes it a reasonable biological expectation.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Pseudohemiodon thorectes has been recorded. The species has not entered the mainstream hobby, and even dedicated loricariid keepers are unlikely to have encountered it. The genus Pseudohemiodon is associated with paternal lip-brooding or body-brooding of eggs — a form of parental care in which the male attaches eggs to specialised lip or ventral structures and carries them through development — but this has not been confirmed for P. thorectes by published observation.
For any aquarist attempting to breed this species, the provision of deep, fine sandy substrate (at minimum 2–3 in), low light levels, nocturnal feeding schedules, and stable water quality would be the baseline environmental requirements. Documentation of any reproductive behaviour would be a genuine scientific contribution.
In the aquarium
Pseudohemiodon thorectes is a specialist species rarely if ever available through the ornamental trade. Its small adult size (under 4.5 in SL) means a tank footprint is not the limiting factor — an aquarium of 80 × 15.5 in could comfortably house a pair — but the species' requirements are specific and non-negotiable.
The substrate must be fine, soft sand, several centimetres deep. The fish will spend its daylight hours buried with only the eyes breaking the surface plane; disturbing this behaviour by using gravel or coarse substrate would be detrimental. Lighting should be subdued or the tank positioned to receive minimal direct light. Feeding should be timed to the evening or early night period when the fish is naturally active. Good water flow without strong point-source current is appropriate for a Mamoré river bed environment.
Temperature in the range of 75–82 °F suits the Bolivian lowland origin. Water chemistry is moderately flexible within the soft-to-moderate range; extremes of hardness or pH should be avoided. Tankmates, if any, should be chosen from peaceful, non-competitive species that will not disturb a sedentary, sand-burying fish during the day.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudohemiodon thorectes as Data Deficient (DD) in 2014. The assessment reflects the near-total absence of information on this species' population status, abundance, and range dynamics. It was described from a single holotype, and records in the literature since the 1975 original description are scarce. A Data Deficient listing does not imply security — it is explicitly a statement that the data required to make an assessment do not exist.
The Mamoré basin faces moderate but growing anthropogenic pressure: agricultural expansion in the Bolivian lowlands, deforestation in the Andes foothill transition zone, and road construction projects affecting seasonal floodplain hydrology. The Llanos de Mojos, through which the Mamoré flows, is one of the largest seasonally flooded savannas in South America and has historically offered some buffering through sheer geographic scale and limited access. Whether P. thorectes is genuinely common within that landscape or genuinely scarce is unknown. Targeted ichthyological surveys of sandy-bed Mamoré tributaries are needed to establish a baseline.
