Taxonomy & naming
Pseudohemiodon platycephalus was described by Rudolf Kner in 1853 in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien (volume 6, page 89, plates 1 and 6), under the original combination Hemiodon platycephalus. The type locality is the Rio Cuiabá, Brazil, a major tributary of the Paraguay River in Mato Grosso state. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Pseudohemiodon platycephalus (Kner, 1853).
The genus Pseudohemiodon belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae — the armoured whiptail catfishes — within Loricariidae. Loricariinae are characterised by a greatly elongate and depressed body, the reduction or absence of ventral abdominal plates in some groups, and the presence of a whip-like caudal extension. Ferraris (2007, Zootaxa 1418) provides the most recent comprehensive checklist of the group. The epithet platycephalus — from the Greek platys (flat) and kephalē (head) — refers immediately to the strongly depressed skull that characterises this species.
Morphology
Pseudohemiodon platycephalus reaches approximately 7 in standard length (SL), making it one of the larger members of its genus. The body is strongly depressed throughout — the head especially so, producing the broad, flat profile that gives the species its name. Viewed from above, the head is roughly isosceles-triangle shaped in males and more equilateral in females, a difference that becomes useful for sexing adults. The overall body profile is elongate, with the trunk tapering to a filamentous caudal extension.
Coloration is typically pale sandy-brown to greyish on the dorsal surface — cryptic against sand and gravel — with a paler ventral surface. Bony scutes cover the dorsal surface; the ventral surface is reduced in armour, consistent with the substrate-resting lifestyle. In breeding males, odontodal growth develops on the cheeks (interopercular region) and along the pectoral fin spines; the pectoral spines of males are also noted as thicker and slightly shorter than those of females.
Habitat
Pseudohemiodon platycephalus is distributed through the La Plata basin, specifically the Paraná and Paraguay river drainages, across Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. The type locality, Rio Cuiabá, is a large lowland river of the Pantanal region — one of the world's largest tropical wetlands — with a strongly seasonal flood regime.
The La Plata drainage extends considerably further south than the Amazon basin, and P. platycephalus tolerates cooler, subtropical water temperatures than most Amazonian loricariids. Sandy river margins, the mouths of sandy tributaries, and the shallow margins of large rivers with soft substrate are the expected microhabitat for this benthic sand-dweller. The IUCN (2018) notes the La Plata basin faces broad pressures from agricultural runoff and deforestation, though P. platycephalus is not considered directly threatened.
Feeding
Like other members of Loricariinae, P. platycephalus is a benthic grazer, feeding on biofilm, diatoms, fine algae, and organic detritus accumulated on sandy substrates. The ventrally positioned mouth scrapes material from the sediment surface and from submerged objects. In the aquarium, the substrate itself becomes a feeding surface and should be fine, smooth sand maintained with detritus removed by gentle siphoning rather than deep disturbance.
Suitable aquarium foods include sinking algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, and spinach. The fish are not aggressive feeders and should be provided with feeding areas away from competitive species. Occasional offerings of frozen daphnia or similar small invertebrates may be accepted but are not a dietary staple.
Mating
Pseudohemiodon platycephalus has been spawned in aquaria by hobbyists, and the PlanetCatfish database holds 18 images documenting the species including records of eggs and fry — making it the most thoroughly documented aquarium subject in the genus. Males in breeding condition develop pronounced odontodes on the cheeks and thicker pectoral fin spines, and the head shape difference between sexes (isosceles triangle in males, more equilateral in females) assists in identification of a breeding pair.
Conditioning should involve a varied diet, quality water, and — reflecting the subtropical origin — the possibility of allowing the tank temperature to drop slightly during the cooler months before raising it again as a seasonal cue. Females become visibly broader-bodied when gravid. No specific account of courtship behaviour has been published, but the open-substrate spawning typical of the genus implies the male selects and defends a patch of sand as a brooding site.
Breeding
Pseudohemiodon platycephalus is a paternal brooder — one of the defining features of the genus. Rather than depositing eggs in a cave as Hypostominae do, the male broods the egg mass on or beneath his flat body on open substrate, maintaining the eggs with fanning movements and keeping them oxygenated. This open-substrate, body-brooding strategy has been observed and documented in captivity for this species, underpinning its status as the best-documented Pseudohemiodon in the hobby.
The egg mass is adhesive and is held close to or under the broad ventral surface of the male. Incubation duration is not published in available sources, but is expected to be comparable to other loricariine whiptails — roughly one to two weeks at suitable temperatures. The male guards the eggs and early fry. Breeders should take care not to disturb the male during this period, as disturbance can cause abandonment of the clutch. Water quality must remain high throughout brooding; soft, slightly acidic to neutral water is preferable.
In the aquarium
Pseudohemiodon platycephalus is uncommon in the hobby but is available through specialist catfish importers, particularly in Europe where the PlanetCatfish community has the most keeper records. Seven registered keepers and four spotters are recorded, along with 18 images — the largest gallery of any Pseudohemiodon on the database. Its tolerance of cooler water is a notable husbandry advantage, as it can be kept at temperatures around 68–75 °F, reducing the strict heating requirements of many Amazonian catfish.
A suitable aquarium should prioritise a deep, fine sand substrate — coarse gravel is inappropriate and potentially abrasive to the sensitive ventral surface. The tank should be spacious: for an 7 in adult, a footprint of at least 100 × 17.5 in is recommended, and a breeding setup for a pair should be larger. Subdued lighting, achieved through floating plants or a dark background, will encourage the fish to be more active and visible. Water parameters should target pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water, and a temperature appropriate to the La Plata subtropical range.
The species is peaceful toward other fish but will compete with similar-shaped benthic catfishes for substrate space. Appropriate tankmates are peaceful mid-water species that do not disturb the sand. Aggressive or boisterous fish should be avoided. When providing supplementary food, place sinking foods near the fish's resting area at night, as P. platycephalus is most active after lights-out.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudohemiodon platycephalus as Least Concern in 2018 (IUCN ID 140707795), with a population trend assumed stable. The assessment notes that the La Plata basin is broadly subject to agricultural runoff and deforestation pressures, but that these do not currently rise to a level that directly threatens this species.
The La Plata system is one of the most heavily farmed and industrialised river basins in South America, with ongoing conversion of cerrado and Atlantic forest in headwater areas and continued intensification of agriculture across the Pantanal periphery. Sandy-substrate specialists may be sensitive to increased fine-sediment loading from catchment disturbance, which can smother feeding and brooding areas. Monitoring of population trends in specialist substrate species across the modified portions of the La Plata basin would strengthen future assessments.
