Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria aequalicuspis was described by Roberto Reis and Adriana Cardoso in 2001 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 12, number 4, pages 319–332), based on specimens from coastal Atlantic drainages of far southern Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid 66509) recognises it as a valid species within the genus Rineloricaria Bleeker, 1862 — one of the largest genera in subfamily Loricariinae.
At the time of description the genus Rineloricaria already contained several dozen species, and the 2001 paper introduced two novelties from southern Santa Catarina and northeastern Rio Grande do Sul. Rineloricaria aequalicuspis is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of plate-arrangement and dental characters, most notably the nearly equal-sized cusps on its bicuspid teeth (see Morphology). No synonyms are currently recognised, and it has no widely used common name in either the trade or popular literature.
Morphology
Rineloricaria aequalicuspis reaches approximately 6.5 in standard length (SL) — a robust size for the genus, placing it among the larger whiptail loricariids. The body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened and elongate, as in all members of the genus, tapering to a slender caudal peduncle. The head is broad and depressed, with the mouth positioned ventrally and armed with bicuspid teeth; the diagnostic feature of the species is that the two cusps are of nearly equal size, unlike related species in which the cusps are noticeably unequal.
The tip of the snout carries a roundish naked (unplated) area that does not reach the last pore of the infraorbital sensory canal — a character used to separate this species from others in the regional fauna. The posterior abdominal complex comprises well-developed pre-anal plates bordered by usually three large polygonal plates; the anterior complex, when present, consists of few small irregular platelets. Dorsal fin formula is I,7 (one spine plus seven soft rays). The species is a facultative air-breather, able to supplement gill respiration by gulping atmospheric air — an adaptation shared with other loricariids in seasonally variable or oxygen-poor habitats.
Breeding males develop hypertrophied odontodes on the snout, head, and pectoral spines, which are used in competitive interactions with rival males and in courtship. Females are broader-bodied and lack the elaborate odontode development.
Habitat
This species is recorded from Atlantic coastal drainages of southern Brazil, specifically from southern Santa Catarina and northeastern Rio Grande do Sul states. The type locality is Rio Três Forquilhas, opposite the church of Vila Itati (approximately 29°30'43"S, 50°05'31"W), Terra de Areia, Rio Grande do Sul. Additional records come from the Maquiné (Forqueta) river system in the same state.
These are small- to medium-sized coastal rivers flowing from the Serra Gaúcha escarpment to the Atlantic coast, generally clear to moderately tannin-stained, over rocky, sandy, or gravelly substrates. FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic and tropical-to-subtropical, inhabiting creeks to larger rivers in shallow to deep water, associated with the bottom among rocks and stones. Given its subtropical latitude, the region experiences seasonal temperature swings more pronounced than equatorial Amazon drainages.
Feeding
Like other members of Loricariinae, R. aequalicuspis is presumed to be a grazer of periphyton, biofilm, and fine organic detritus scraped from hard substrates. The genus as a whole feeds by rasping attached algal and microbial films from rocks, submerged wood, and other surfaces using its bicuspid teeth. Fine detritus and aquatic invertebrate larvae are also likely components of the diet, as in related whiptail species for which gut-content data are available.
No published stomach-content analysis specific to this species is available. In the aquarium, similar Rineloricaria species accept algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and fine sinking pellets.
Mating
No direct observations of courtship behaviour have been published for R. aequalicuspis. Based on the reproductive biology of closely related Rineloricaria species studied in captivity and field collections, males are expected to establish territories around suitable spawning cavities — crevices between stones or hollow sections of woody debris — and develop prominent odontode hypertrophy on the snout and pectoral spines to compete with rival males and attract females.
Males in spawning condition are readily distinguished from females by their larger, more elaborately ornamented heads and more slender body profile. Females ready to spawn are visibly wider across the abdomen when viewed dorsally.
Breeding
No confirmed aquarium breeding reports for R. aequalicuspis are on record. The genus Rineloricaria is characterised by a substrate-spawning reproductive strategy in which eggs are deposited on the floor or walls of a sheltered cavity. The attending male guards the clutch, fanning it with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and removing infertile or fungused eggs. This paternal care continues through hatching and into early fry development.
By analogy with better-known congeners such as R. lanceolata and R. eigenmanni, clutches are likely small to moderate in size, and incubation at temperate-subtropical temperatures may be somewhat longer than in tropical relatives. Given that PlanetCatfish lists no registered keepers or breeding reports, and describes the species as research/wild-only, hobbyist experience with this species is essentially absent.
In the aquarium
Rineloricaria aequalicuspis is not established in the aquarium trade, and there are no published care records from hobbyists. Its subtropical origin (southern Brazil coastal drainages) suggests it would be more tolerant of cooler temperatures than tropical whiptails, potentially doing well in unheated or lightly heated aquaria in temperate climates — a characteristic shared by other loricariids from southern Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay.
If encountered, care would likely follow the general template for the genus: a well-oxygenated tank with a sand or fine-gravel substrate, some flat stones and smooth woody debris for shelter and spawning, subdued lighting, and gentle to moderate current. The diet would consist of algae wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched vegetables. Peaceful tankmates compatible with the cool water preferences of a subtropical species would be appropriate.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria aequalicuspis as Least Concern in November 2018. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across multiple river systems in the Atlantic coastal drainages of Rio Grande do Sul and southern Santa Catarina, with no evidence of major population decline at that time.
The Atlantic coastal forests of southern Brazil — the region's natural catchment — are among the most threatened biomes in the world, with extensive deforestation and agricultural conversion affecting water quality and hydrology in small coastal drainages. Future assessments may need to account for increasing sediment loads, water abstraction, and riparian degradation in these small river systems, though the species is not currently considered at risk.
