One of nine whiptail loricariids described simultaneously from the Uruguay drainage in 2008, Rineloricaria anhaguapitan is named for an Anhanguera — a Tupí thunder-devil of legend — whose mythological fate shaped the very river this species calls home. A slender bottom-dweller of shaded stream tributaries, it is effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby and exists in the scientific record largely through its type series.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria anhaguapitan was formally described by Ghazzi in 2008 in Iheringia, Série Zoológica (volume 98, number 1, pages 100–122), as one of nine new Rineloricaria species from the Uruguay River basin of southern Brazil. The holotype is deposited at MCP (Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia, PUCRS) under catalogue number MCP 21070. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Rineloricaria anhaguapitan Ghazzi, 2008 as the valid name.

The genus Rineloricaria Bleeker, 1862 is among the largest in the subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail catfishes — and encompasses elongated, dorsoventrally flattened species with a characteristic long, tapering caudal filament. The group is distributed across much of lowland South America east of the Andes, reaching its greatest diversity in the La Plata and Atlantic coastal systems.

The specific epithet anhaguapitan derives from Tupí oral tradition. Anhanguera — sometimes rendered Anhaguapitã — is a fire-breathing devil-figure who, in one cycle of legends, clashed with St. Peter; the divine encounter sent his burning body crashing to earth, where it became rain and stones, mythologically forming the Uruguay River. Ghazzi drew on this indigenous narrative to honour both the cultural landscape and the river whose tributaries are the sole known home of this species.

Morphology

Like all members of its genus, R. anhaguapitan is strongly dorsoventrally compressed, with a broad, flattened head and a body that tapers to a slender caudal peduncle bearing an extended filamentous caudal ray. The dorsal profile is gently convex; the ventral surface is flat. Bony scutes (plates) cover the flanks in the interlocking arrangement typical of Loricariidae, with the abdomen partially or largely naked depending on region, as is characteristic across the genus.

The maximum recorded length is 5 in standard length (SL), based on the type series and FishBase records; total length with the caudal filament would exceed this. Trophic level is recorded at 2.5 (±0.2), consistent with a diet of biofilm, periphyton, and fine detritus.

Males of Rineloricaria develop hypertrophied odontodes — stiff, hair-like dermal denticles — on the sides of the head and along the leading edge of the pectoral fins during the breeding season. These are absent or reduced in females and non-breeding males, providing the primary basis for sex determination in the field and in captivity. Specific pigmentation data for R. anhaguapitan are not available in the accessible literature; the genus typically shows earth-toned mottled or banded patterns that break up the body outline against gravel and sand substrates.

Habitat

The type locality is the tributaries of the Rio Passo Fundo, a right-bank tributary of the upper Rio Uruguay, in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. This situates R. anhaguapitan in cool Subtropical highland streams — swift, well-oxygenated, and characterised by gravel, cobble, and sandy substrates with patches of leaf litter and submerged wood.

The upper Uruguay basin drains the southern Brazilian Plateau, where stream temperatures are lower and more seasonal than in equatorial South America; winter lows can be appreciable. No water-chemistry measurements (pH, conductivity, temperature) are documented in the available literature specifically for this species. Comparable Rineloricaria from southern Brazilian streams generally inhabit well-oxygenated, slightly acidic to neutral, soft to moderately hard water.

As a facultative air-breather — a trait shared across much of Loricariinae — R. anhaguapitan can supplement gill respiration with atmospheric oxygen when dissolved oxygen levels drop temporarily, though it is not dependent on surface access under normal stream conditions.

Feeding

No feeding studies specific to R. anhaguapitan exist in the available literature. The trophic level of 2.5 recorded by FishBase is typical of loricariids that subsist primarily on aufwuchs — the community of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, biofilm, and fine detritus that coats submerged stones, wood, and leaf surfaces in stream environments.

Whiptails in the genus Rineloricaria are generally considered opportunistic scrapers and microdetritiphages rather than strict grazers. They use their inferior, bristle-like teeth to rasp substrate surfaces, ingesting the surface-associated organic layer. In streams with sandy or fine gravel bottoms, organic particles settled in the interstitial spaces also contribute to the diet. Invertebrate prey is likely taken incidentally but is not a primary food source.

Mating

Courtship behaviour has not been documented for R. anhaguapitan specifically. The reproductive biology of the genus Rineloricaria is broadly understood from more commonly kept congeners and follows a consistent pattern within Loricariinae.

Males use hypertrophied odontodes as both a display and a contact structure during courtship. Odontode development is androgen-dependent and intensifies when fish are brought into spawning condition — typically achieved in captivity through improved nutrition and water-change regimes that mimic seasonal freshets. Males become territorial around prospective spawning sites, particularly cavities under flat stones, within woody debris, or in the banks of streambeds. Rival males may engage in brief physical contests in which they press flanks and lock pectoral spines.

Breeding

Rineloricaria species are cavity spawners with paternal egg-guarding — a breeding guild well-represented in the subfamily Loricariinae. The male selects and defends a sheltered substrate depression, crevice, or hollow — in the wild this may be beneath a flat stone or within a submerged root mass. The female deposits adhesive eggs within the cavity, and the male subsequently guards the clutch, fanning it with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and removing any infertile or fungused eggs.

No clutch-size data are available for R. anhaguapitan. Congeners typically produce clutches of several dozen eggs. Incubation duration depends on temperature; fry emerge fully formed and capable of feeding on biofilm almost immediately. Paternal care extends through the early post-hatching period until fry begin dispersing independently.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria anhaguapitan is not known to be established in the aquarium trade, and no husbandry records appear in the accessible literature. It was described from a single collecting event and has not been commercially exported.

For aquarists who might encounter this species — or who maintain other small Rineloricaria from southern Brazilian streams — the appropriate setup mirrors the cool subtropical highland habitat: a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, smooth flat stones under which the fish can shelter, and well-oxygenated water with moderate current. A temperature range of roughly 64–75 °F would be appropriate for species from this climatic zone, where water temperatures are seasonal. Gentle filtration maintaining clean water is important, as these slender whiptails are sensitive to organic loading.

The species is small enough (under 5 in SL) to be accommodated in a moderately sized aquarium of 20 US gal or more for a small group, provided adequate substrate cover is available. Any tankmates should be peaceful and non-competitive at the water surface, given the species' benthic nature.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria anhaguapitan as Least Concern in November 2018, indicating that at the time of assessment the species did not meet threshold criteria for a threatened category. The assessment reflects that the species is not subject to significant fisheries pressure or targeted collection, and that its range within the upper Rio Uruguay tributaries was not considered acutely threatened at that time.

Nevertheless, the known range is restricted to the Rio Passo Fundo tributaries of the upper Uruguay basin in Rio Grande do Sul, a region where small stream fish communities face ongoing pressures from agricultural intensification, riparian deforestation, and changes in stream flow and sediment loads associated with soybean and livestock farming. The species has not been recorded outside this narrow geographic area and would likely be sensitive to local watershed degradation. Continued monitoring of stream quality in its type locality region would be warranted.
