Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria anitae was formally described by Maria de Lourdes Pinna Ghazzi in 2008, in Iheringia (Série Zoologia), volume 98, number 1 (pages 100-122), within a paper titled 'Nine new species of the genus Rineloricaria from Uruguay River, southern Brazil.' The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises it as a valid species (species id 70218), and FishBase carries it under SpecCode 63890.
The species belongs to the genus Rineloricaria, the large and taxonomically difficult genus of whiptail catfishes within the subfamily Loricariinae of the armoured catfish family Loricariidae. Rineloricaria is among the most species-rich loricariid genera, and the group from the Uruguay drainage that Ghazzi revised in 2008 added a substantial number of regional endemics, of which R. anitae is one.
The specific epithet honours Anita Garibaldi (Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro, 1821-1849), the Brazilian wife and comrade-in-arms of Giuseppe Garibaldi during the Ragamuffin War (Revolução Farroupilha), the regional conflict whose history is closely tied to the Santa Catarina waters from which the species was collected.
Morphology
Rineloricaria anitae reaches at least 4.5 in standard length (the largest measured male or unsexed specimen). Like other members of the genus it has the elongate, depressed, whip-tailed body form characteristic of Rineloricaria, with the head and trunk encased in the overlapping bony plates typical of the Loricariinae and the body tapering to a long, thin caudal peduncle.
Fin-ray counts recorded for the species are eight soft dorsal rays and six soft anal rays. Beyond these meristic figures and the maximum size, detailed morphometric data are confined to the original description; no comprehensive popular account of the species' coloration in life has been published. As with most whiptails, the ventral mouth is modified into a sucker disc used to hold position on the substrate.
Habitat
The species is known from the Rio Canoas, part of the upper Uruguay River system in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. The wider drainage is a subtropical-to-temperate highland river network, distinct from the lowland Amazonian habitats of many other loricariids.
Rineloricaria anitae is a freshwater, demersal (bottom-associated) fish living in tropical to subtropical conditions. Members of the genus are typically found on sand and among submerged wood and leaf litter in flowing water, and Rineloricaria are noted facultative air-breathers, able to supplement gill respiration by gulping air at the surface in low-oxygen conditions. Specific microhabitat data for R. anitae beyond its drainage of origin have not been published.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Rineloricaria anitae has been published. Its FishBase trophic level of 2.6 places it as a low-level omnivore, consistent with the genus, whose members graze biofilm, algae, microorganisms and fine organic detritus from submerged surfaces using the rasping sucker mouth.
In the absence of species-specific data, feeding inferences should rest on general Rineloricaria biology rather than observation of this fish: a diet dominated by aufwuchs and detritus is the most that can be responsibly stated.
Mating
No courtship or mating behaviour has been documented for Rineloricaria anitae. Whiptail catfishes of this genus are generally cave- or crevice-spawners in which the male takes a leading role in site selection and brood care, but no observation specific to this species exists, and nothing about its reproductive behaviour should be asserted.
Breeding
There are no published breeding reports for Rineloricaria anitae, in the wild or in captivity. Many Rineloricaria species are bred in the aquarium as substrate egg-layers with paternal care, the male guarding and fanning a clutch deposited in a tube or crevice, but whether R. anitae follows this pattern is unrecorded. No data published.
In the aquarium
Rineloricaria anitae is not an established aquarium species and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade; it has no L-number and no body of hobbyist husbandry literature. Any keeping recommendations would therefore be extrapolation from the genus rather than experience with this fish.
In general terms, whiptail catfishes of this size are kept in well-filtered tanks with a soft sand substrate, gentle to moderate current, driftwood and refuges, and stable subtropical-to-tropical temperatures matching their southern Brazilian origin. Because no specific husbandry has been recorded for R. anitae, prospective keepers should treat it as an undocumented species and rely on general Rineloricaria care principles.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria anitae as Data Deficient, with the assessment dated 15 January 2021. The Data Deficient category reflects insufficient information to evaluate the species' extinction risk, which is unsurprising given its restricted known range in the upper Uruguay system and the lack of population data.
Rivers of the upper Uruguay drainage in southern Brazil are subject to pressures from hydroelectric development, agriculture and land-use change, factors that can affect range-restricted endemics. Without targeted survey work, the species' true status and any specific threats remain unresolved.
