Among the whiptail loricariids, Sturisoma lyra stands out for a body plan taken to an extreme — a ruler-flat silhouette, a snout drawn out to a fine point, and a caudal fin trailing filaments that make the fish look longer still. Collected from the Juruá and Acre river drainages of the western Amazon basin, it is a peaceful, obligate flat-surface grazer whose males tend eggs with attentive fanning that has made the genus a favourite among dedicated pleco keepers.

Taxonomy & naming

Sturisoma lyra was first described by Charles Tate Regan in 1904 in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (volume 17, plate 19, figure 2), under the original combination Oxyloricaria lyra. The name was applied to material from the Rio Juruá, middle Amazon basin, Brazil. Isbrücker (1979) later designated BMNH 1897.12.1.64 (9 in SL) as lectotype, with nine paralectotypes retained at the Natural History Museum, London.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) places the valid name as Sturisoma lyra (Regan, 1904), a combination reflecting the transfer of many former Oxyloricaria species to Sturisoma once the synonymy of those genera was resolved. A revision of the genus by Londoño-Burbano and colleagues (2024, Journal of Fish Biology) recognised eleven valid Sturisoma species, confirming the standing of S. lyra within a group of elongate Amazonian whiptails.

Within Loricariidae, Sturisoma belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae — the true whiptails and chaetostomas lineage characterised by strongly depressed bodies, reduced or absent dorsal plating posteriorly, and the sexually dimorphic rostral bristles seen in breeding males. The family placement follows Armbruster's (2004) phylogenetic review of the suckermouth catfishes.

Morphology

Sturisoma lyra reaches approximately 10 in total length — large for the genus and consistent with the elongated build that earns these fish the whiptail label. The body is extraordinarily depressed: in cross-section it is nearly as wide as it is deep, an adaptation to pressing flat against submerged surfaces in moderate current. The snout is produced and spatulate; the rostral plate extends well ahead of the mouth.

The dorsal fin inserts close behind the head, and the caudal fin bears elongated upper and lower filaments that extend beyond the standard body length in adults, adding appreciably to the apparent total length. Coloration is typically a warm tan to olive-brown ground, overlaid with a network of darker reticulations or spots; the pattern varies somewhat between individuals.

Sexual dimorphism is consistent with other Sturisoma: breeding males develop prominent odontodes (bristle-like spines) on the cheeks and along the snout, giving the head a hirsute appearance. Females lack these structures and, when gravid, show a broader abdominal profile when viewed from above. The snout shape and relative body proportions can also differ subtly between the sexes.

Habitat

The species is known from the Juruá River basin and the adjacent Acre River drainage in the western Brazilian Amazon, with the Acre drainage extending into lowland Peru. Both are lowland tributaries of the Amazon proper, flowing across level forest terrain with strong seasonal flood pulses that inundate adjacent forest and deposit organic debris.

Microhabitat in the Juruá is characteristic of many Loricariinae: submerged root mats, smooth-surfaced sunken logs, and flat rock faces in areas of moderate to gentle current. The water is typically warm tropical freshwater with soft to moderately soft chemistry. Genus Sturisoma is noted as facultatively air-breathing, allowing it to supplement dissolved oxygen uptake at the water surface — an advantage in the slack backwaters that form during seasonal floods.

Specific water chemistry data for the Juruá collection sites is not recorded in available sources; broad tropical Amazon conditions (warm, soft, slightly acidic to neutral) are the reasonable inference from the basin context.

Feeding

Sturisoma lyra is an algae and biofilm grazer — a typical Loricariinae feeding strategy. In the wild it rasps periphyton, diatoms, and fine detritus from flat surfaces: rock faces, large logs, and exposed root systems. The depressed body and ventrally placed mouth with fine teeth are well suited to close-contact scraping on smooth, level substrates.

In aquaria the genus is reliably fed on algae wafers, spirulina-enriched sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables such as courgette (zucchini), cucumber, peas, and sweet potato. The fish will also graze naturally on glass and broad-leaved plants. Protein content can be modest; a predominantly plant-based diet is appropriate. Like most loricariids, the species benefits from dietary variety and will condition well on diverse supplementary foods ahead of a breeding attempt.

Mating

Courtship in Sturisoma follows the general pattern documented for the genus in aquaria. Males become territorially active around broad, smooth surfaces — large flat stones, aquarium glass panels, or sections of smooth driftwood — which serve as potential spawning substrates. The development of prominent cheek odontodes in males appears to function in male–male signalling and in stimulating female interest.

Conditioning is aided by clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current and a drop in temperature or water softness to simulate the onset of cooler-season conditions in the source rivers. Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.5–7.2) at around 75–79 °F is commonly recommended for inducing spawning in the genus. A well-fed female in peak condition shows obvious abdominal fullness. Males may court by swimming alongside or beneath the female and pressing their bodies against flat surfaces to signal spawning sites.

Breeding

Sturisoma lyra, like its congeners, spawns on flat, smooth surfaces rather than in caves — a defining feature that sets the subfamily apart from the many cave-spawning loricariids. Eggs are deposited in loose clusters directly on aquarium glass, flat stones, or smooth slate, and the male immediately takes up guard position beside or over the clutch.

The male fans the eggs continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygen flow and removes any unfertilised or fungused eggs. Incubation lasts approximately 7–10 days at 79 °F, after which the fry hatch as fully formed miniatures still attached to large yolk sacs. Once mobile, the fry begin grazing on microalgae and fine foods; they may be fed infusoria, fine algae powder, or very finely ground spirulina in the early stages.

The genus breeds readily in captivity with appropriate conditioning, and multiple hobbyist reports exist for closely related species. Specific clutch-size data for S. lyra is not recorded in available sources, but genus-level experience suggests clutches of a few dozen to approximately 100 eggs depending on the size and condition of the pair.

In the aquarium

Sturisoma lyra requires a spacious aquarium given its 10 in adult size and need for horizontal swimming room and wide flat surfaces for foraging. A tank of at least 40 US gal with a long footprint is appropriate for a single specimen or a pair; a group requires proportionally more space and multiple flat grazing surfaces to reduce competition.

Current is important: the species originates in flowing water and will benefit from a powerhead or spray bar creating a gentle directional flow across the tank. Oxygenation should be high; still, warm water promotes respiratory stress in a facultatively air-breathing species. Temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water are all workable parameters. Water quality must be excellent — loricariids are sensitive to elevated nitrite and ammonia.

Flat, smooth surfaces are essential for natural behaviour: broad smooth stones, slate pieces, or clean areas of the rear and side glass panels. Driftwood and plant cover (Anubias, Java fern) are appreciated for shade and grazing. Tankmates should be peaceful mid-water fish that will not compete for the same surface territory; avoid boisterous or nippy species that may damage the long caudal filaments. The fish is unaggressive toward other species and gentle enough for a mixed loricariid community if territory is not contested.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Sturisoma lyra as Least Concern in December 2020, based on the species' presence across a broad area of the Juruá and Acre river basins in western Brazil and lowland Peru, with no evidence of significant population decline. The Juruá is a remote, relatively intact river system with lower deforestation pressure than the arc-of-deforestation states to the south and east of the Amazon.

The species is occasionally encountered in the ornamental trade as a bycatch of broader Amazonian collection, though it is not a mainstream aquarium species. Captive breeding in the genus is well established, and the genus's readiness to spawn on flat surfaces makes it amenable to aquaculture. No specific management measures target S. lyra, and at present its LC status reflects a stable, if data-limited, picture.
