Sturisoma guentheri is the upper-Amazon member of the cis-Andean whiptail guild — a slender, arrow-shaped loricariid whose elongated snout and threadlike caudal filaments convey an almost architectural elegance. Less frequently imported than its La Plata relative S. barbatum, it is the whiptail species of choice for tropical Amazon biotope aquaria, where it performs the same steady, methodical biofilm-grazing under bright light that makes the genus so appealing to watch.

Taxonomy & naming

Sturisoma guentheri was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1904 in the Transactions of the Zoological Society of London (volume 17, part 3, no. 1), from material attributed to the upper Amazon River basin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Sturisoma guentheri (Regan, 1904). The species epithet honours Dr Albert Karl Ludwig Gotthilf Günther (1830–1914), the German-born British zoologist and ichthyologist whose foundational catalogues of British Museum fish specimens remain primary literature for Neotropical systematics.

The genus Sturisoma belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae (armoured whiptails), one of the principal subfamilial lineages within Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004). Sturisoma is restricted to cis-Andean drainages east of the Andes, distinguishing it from the largely trans-Andean Sturisomatichthys. The genera are separated by plate counts and fin characters: Sturisoma carries 20–21 plates in the median lateral series, has central abdominal plates arranged in three longitudinal rows, and lacks dark spots on the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins; Sturisomatichthys has 15–18 lateral plates and typically spotted fins (PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog).

Fish matching S. guentheri have circulated in the aquarium trade under the informal trade name 'royal whiptail', a label shared with several congeners. No L-number has been formally assigned to this species. Distribution records place it in the upper Amazon basin of Peru and Ecuador (FishBase); GBIF occurrence data include records from these Andean-foothill tributaries.

Morphology

Adults reach 9 in standard length (SL), making S. guentheri slightly smaller than the sympatric S. barbatum of the La Plata basin (11 in SL). The body plan is the classic Sturisoma template: strongly depressed from rostrum to caudal peduncle, with a wide, spatulate snout bearing small sensory pores and short dermal tentacles on the underside. The caudal fin is lunate with elongated upper and lower filamentous rays — the 'whip' that gives the genus its common name — which can add 30–40% to total apparent length in mature individuals.

Ground coloration is a warm pale tan to golden-brown with a regular dark reticulation forming interlocking diamond shapes along the flanks. The dorsal fin and upper flanks may show faint banding; the ventral surface is cream. The pattern tends to be crisper and more contrastingly pigmented in this species than in some congeners from cooler waters.

Sexual dimorphism follows the Sturisoma pattern: breeding males develop a fringe of stout interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) on both sides of the head, which splay visibly when the fish is active or displaying. These are absent or barely present in females. Ripe females are noticeably wider-bodied than males when viewed from above, particularly between the pectoral and pelvic fins. Genital papillae provide an additional sexing aid in conditioned adults.

Habitat

Sturisoma guentheri is recorded from the upper Amazon basin, including drainages of Peru and Ecuador at the Andean foothills (FishBase, GBIF). This positions it in white-water or clearwater rivers descending from Andean slopes — characteristically cool, well-oxygenated systems with moderate to strong current over rocky or woody substrates. Andean-foothill rivers carry considerable seasonal variation in flow and temperature, with dry-season low water exposing rocky substrates and concentrating fish in pools, while high-water periods flood banks and deposit organic material.

Microhabitat, inferred from field collections of congeners in similar systems, is associated with flat rock surfaces, submerged wood, and hard-bottomed riffles in flowing water. Whiptail loricariids position themselves on current-exposed surfaces using their ventral sucker disc and pectoral spines, methodically grazing biofilm (periphyton, diatoms, and bacteria). They are active in daylight and are regularly found in open positions on rocks rather than concealed under ledges.

FishBase records the ecological niche as freshwater demersal tropical, consistent with river-margin and riffle habitat at moderate elevations. The subtropical/warm-tropical Andean foothill thermal regime is warmer than the S. barbatum range and more consistent with standard tropical aquarium temperatures, an important practical distinction.

Feeding

Sturisoma guentheri is an aufwuchs grazer — a scraper of periphyton (the matrix of algae, cyanobacteria, diatoms, small invertebrates, and detritus that coats hard substrates in flowing water). The elongated snout is adapted for reaching into crevices and rasping sloped or curved surfaces that broader-bodied plecos cannot efficiently exploit. Dentition is fine and numerous, suited to grazing rather than gouging wood.

The diet is predominantly plant-derived in the wild but is supplemented by small invertebrates and detrital material encountered while grazing. In captivity, S. guentheri accepts a wide range of prepared and fresh vegetable foods: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, sweet potato, and green leafy vegetables such as spinach or tender lettuce. The fish is often visibly active by day, grazing glass, rock, and driftwood surfaces continuously.

Protein should not be neglected: offering occasional small pieces of prawn, bloodworm (live or frozen), or quality sinking pellets a few times weekly helps maintain muscle tone and reproductive condition. Heavy reliance on low-protein vegetable foods alone can result in gradual loss of body mass in long-term captives. Driftwood is useful as a grazing substrate but this species is not a dedicated xylophage.

Mating

Courtship behaviour in Sturisoma guentheri in aquaria has not been formally described in the published literature, but the genus has a well-documented reproductive biology (Linder, PlanetCatfish; Aquarium Glaser field notes) that applies to this species by analogy. Males become territorial around preferred flat surfaces — sections of aquarium glass, smooth slate, ceramic tile, or clean driftwood flanks — and display actively toward females by spreading their cheek bristles and patrolling the site. The male's cheek odontodes are functionally both a display organ and a mechanosensory array, and their development intensifies under breeding condition.

Females in breeding condition develop a noticeably wider-bodied profile. The male approaches and nudges the female, positioning himself parallel before she deposits eggs at the chosen site. Spawning bouts may extend over several hours, with the pair returning to the site multiple times. Pairs do best when provided with flat, slightly angled surfaces at varying heights in the aquarium, mimicking the rock faces and log surfaces they would use in the wild.

Breeding

Sturisoma guentheri is assumed to share the standard Sturisoma reproductive strategy: open substrate (non-cave) spawning with paternal brood care. Eggs are adhesive and deposited in a compact cluster directly onto a cleaned vertical or near-vertical surface. The male attaches himself alongside or slightly over the clutch, fanning continuously with pectoral fin strokes to maintain oxygenation. This fanning behaviour also functions to deter fungal colonisation; the male will typically remove visibly infected eggs.

Egg colour is usually yellowish-green to pale olive. Clutch size in Sturisoma is variable and correlated with female size; reported counts for congeners range from about 50 to 150 eggs. At tropical aquarium temperatures of 75–79 °F, incubation is typically 7–10 days. Fry emerge with the full adult scute pattern and a large yolk sac, beginning to graze biofilm within a few days of yolk absorption. Initial foods for fry should include soft biofilm surfaces (an aged smooth rock or glass wall works well), spirulina paste, and finely ground algae wafer; animal protein (microworms, freshly hatched brine shrimp) supports growth in the earliest phase.

For the Sturisoma genus, Aquarium Glaser notes that fry require access to parental excrement in order to inoculate their gut with the endosymbiont microbiota needed to digest plant matter — a practice worth accommodating in breeding setups.

In the aquarium

Sturisoma guentheri is a suitable loricariid for experienced fishkeepers who can provide the conditions the species needs. Unlike the La Plata-basin S. barbatum (which tolerates down to 68 °F), S. guentheri is an upper-Amazon fish that should be maintained at 75–82 °F — well within the standard tropical aquarium range. This makes it easier to mix with typical South American community fish from the upper Amazon and associated tributaries.

Adult size of 9 in SL demands a spacious aquarium: a minimum of 40 US gal for a single adult, 55–65 US gal for a pair, with sufficient horizontal run for the fish to swim freely. Filtration should be efficient and provide moderate to strong current; the species originates in oxygenated river systems and becomes prone to skin and gill bacterial infections in stagnant, poorly oxygenated water. A canister filter or sump with outlets directed to generate surface turbulence is ideal.

Aquascape with a mix of smooth rocks and flat slate (grazing surfaces), driftwood (rest sites and secondary grazing), and robust plants such as Anubias or Echinodorus. Substrate is of less importance to a fish that spends its life on hard surfaces; fine gravel or sand is adequate. Avoid fine-leaved carpet plants, which may be abraded by the fish's activity.

S. guentheri is peaceful toward most tankmates. Well-matched companions include upper-Amazon tetras (e.g., Hyphessobrycon spp., Moenkhausia spp.), Corydoras from the western Amazon, and mid-water cichlids of similar temperament such as Geophagus or small Aequidens. Avoid aggressive tank-breakers that might stress or nip at the long caudal filaments.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Sturisoma guentheri as Least Concern in 2014 (most recent assessment). The species is distributed across the upper Amazon basin of Peru and Ecuador, a region that includes both intact Andean-foothill river systems within protected-area networks and agricultural frontier zones where rivers have been degraded by sedimentation and deforestation.

The upper Amazon foothill rivers are among the most biodiverse freshwater systems on Earth and face mounting pressure from agricultural encroachment — particularly oil palm, coca, and cattle operations — that cause siltation, bank erosion, and changes to the light and temperature regime of small rivers. Hydroelectric development in Peruvian and Ecuadorian Andean rivers poses an additional threat to populations in affected catchments by altering flow, sediment dynamics, and fish passage.

No reliable commercial captive-breeding programme for S. guentheri is documented, though the species' reproductive biology (shared with the more commonly bred S. barbatum) suggests it can be bred by dedicated hobbyists. Greater availability of tank-raised stock would reduce wild-collection pressure. At present, the species is not considered threatened, but its restricted upper-Amazon range and the ongoing land-use pressures in that region warrant ongoing monitoring.
