The blacksnouted whiptail is the whiptail catfish that earns its common name at first glance: a jet-black snout tip interrupting an otherwise warm-toned, elegantly tapered body. From the soft-water backwaters of the Ucayali and upper Amazon in Peru, Sturisoma nigrirostrum brings the hallmark Sturisoma package — gentle temperament, diurnal activity, paternal surface-spawning, and enthusiastic biofilm grazing — to tanks large enough to match its 8.5 in frame.

Taxonomy & naming

Sturisoma nigrirostrum was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1940, in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 91, for 1939, pages 249–251, figures 48–50), from material collected at Contamana on the Río Ucayali, Loreto department, Peru. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Sturisoma nigrirostrum Fowler, 1940. The name has appeared in older literature as the misspelling Sturiosoma nigrirostrum (without the 'i'), which is listed as a synonym on PlanetCatfish's Cat-eLog.

The genus Sturisoma belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae, one of the three most species-rich subfamilies of Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004). Distinguishing Sturisoma from the closely allied Sturisomatichthys requires attention to three character suites: in Sturisoma the central abdominal plates are arranged in three clearly defined longitudinal series; all fins except sometimes the pectoral fins lack dark spots; and the median lateral-plate series counts 20–21 plates. In Sturisomatichthys the abdominal plates are less organised, dark spots are usually present on one or more of the unpaired or paired fins, and the lateral-plate count is lower (15–18). Biogeographically, all currently recognised Sturisoma species are cis-Andean, east of the Andes — consistent with S. nigrirostrum's Ucayali distribution. The type locality, Contamana, sits at the confluence of the Ucayali and the Río Pisqui at approximately 7°22'S, 75°2'W in lowland Amazonian Peru.

Morphology

Adults reach 8.5 in standard length (SL), making S. nigrirostrum one of the mid-to-large members of the genus — somewhat smaller than S. barbatum (to 11 in SL) but considerably larger than some congeners. The body conforms to the typical loricariin plan: strongly depressed and elongated, widest across the head and pectoral girdle, tapering steadily through the trunk to a very slender caudal peduncle that terminates in a lunate tail with filamentous extensions on the upper and lower lobes. These extensions are longer and more prominent in mature males.

The defining field mark is the blackened snout tip — the basis of both the scientific epithet (nigri-rostrum, 'black snout') and the English common name. The remainder of the dorsal surface is warm tan to pale brown, overlaid with darker irregular markings or a faint reticulation that varies with condition and locality. The ventral surface is pale and largely naked between the thoracic and pelvic regions.

The head is depressed and broad, with a subterminal suckermouth equipped with multicuspid teeth suited for rasping biofilm from hard surfaces. Short sensory fleshy tentacles are present on the underside of the snout. Mature males develop a conspicuous array of elongated interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) that splay outward during display or aggression. Females are plumper-bodied when gravid and have shorter caudal filaments; genital papillae distinguish the sexes — tubular and pointed in males, broader and more swollen in ripe females.

Habitat

Sturisoma nigrirostrum is known from the Ucayali and upper Amazon drainages of Peru, with additional records from the Marañón and Yavari river basins (PlanetCatfish distribution data). These are predominantly whitewater or clearwater rivers draining the eastern Andean foothills and adjacent lowlands — systems characterised by soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to near-neutral water. FishBase records the environmental envelope for this species as pH 6.0–7.0 and temperatures 77–86 °F (Ref. 2060); PlanetCatfish's Cat-eLog refines this to 75–82 °F and notes that natural habitat is soft water.

FishBase documents the microhabitat as mostly soft-water backwaters — quiet lateral channels, flooded forest margins, and slack reaches behind submerged logs or root mats — where water plants are absent but banks are fringed with floating macrophytes such as Pistia and Eichhornia. Submerged branches and driftwood on the bottom serve as primary foraging surfaces, and the species is capable of scraping some wood material as a digestive aid (Ref. 6868). Unlike some whiptail relatives that gravitate toward fast-water riffles, S. nigrirostrum appears adapted to calmer, more structurally complex microhabitats.

The species is facultatively air-breathing, a trait shared across Loricariinae (FishBase Ref. 126274), which allows it to supplement gill respiration when dissolved oxygen is seasonally reduced in these warm, productive backwaters.

Feeding

Sturisoma nigrirostrum is primarily an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. Using its broad subterminal suckermouth and multicuspid teeth, it rasps the thin matrix of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine organic detritus from hard substrates — wood, rock, and any other stable surface that accumulates a biofilm layer. Field evidence (FishBase Ref. 6868) notes that in natural backwater habitats driftwood is the dominant foraging surface and that the fish will scrape wood fibres directly, suggesting a facultative xylophagous component to the diet, though S. nigrirostrum is not a dedicated wood-eater in the manner of Panaque or Panaqolus.

In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed. Algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, sweet potato, spinach, and peas — are all accepted with enthusiasm. Provided a driftwood piece or two is available in the tank as a grazing surface, the fish will be seen working surfaces throughout the day. Unlike many pleco species, Sturisoma whiptails are diurnal and visible during daylight hours, which makes monitoring condition easy.

Animal-protein supplements — live or frozen bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, Artemia, and high-quality sinking carnivore pellets — should be offered a few times weekly to condition breeding adults and support growth in juveniles. A purely algae-only diet in captivity is suboptimal; the species benefits from dietary variety that mirrors the mixed organic inputs of a productive river margin.

Mating

Courtship in Sturisoma nigrirostrum follows the broad loricariin open-surface spawning pattern. Males become territorial, patrolling flat vertical or gently angled surfaces — aquarium glass, slate tiles, smooth driftwood flanks, or broad leaf surfaces — and developing more elaborate interopercular odontodes during the breeding season. The cheek bristle display serves both as a competitive signal to rival males and as part of courtship directed at females.

A receptive female, visibly fuller through the abdomen and with a swollen, rounded papilla, approaches the male's chosen territory. The male positions himself beside her and guides her to the selected spawning site. Spawning typically occurs directly on the flat surface the male has cleaned, with eggs adhering in a tight cluster. Conditioning the pair with live or frozen invertebrates, regular partial water changes, and a modest temperature reduction of 34–36 °F below the upper range (mimicking seasonal cool-season input) promotes reliable spawning attempts.

PlanetCatfish records two documented breeding reports for S. nigrirostrum, confirming aquarium reproduction is achievable. In a shared tank, males may compete for territory and females; minor fin abrasion from pectoral spine contact between males is possible in undersized enclosures.

Breeding

Like other Sturisoma, S. nigrirostrum is an open surface-spawner with paternal brood care. The male selects a flat, clean site — most commonly the aquarium glass, a broad piece of slate, or a smooth driftwood face — and entices the female to deposit eggs there. Eggs are pale yellow to amber, adhesive, and deposited in a dense mat. A typical clutch reported for Sturisoma is in the range of 100–200 eggs; FishBase records this range for S. nigrirostrum specifically.

After spawning the male assumes sole responsibility for the clutch. He stations himself across or beside the egg mass, fanning continuously with his pectoral and caudal fins to maintain oxygen flow, removing infertile or fungused eggs as they appear. Incubation at 77–81 °F typically takes 5–8 days, with the exact duration varying with temperature. Newly hatched fry are small but well-formed, bearing the flattened body plan of the adults and beginning to rasp soft surfaces and accept finely powdered algae-based food within a day or two of becoming free-swimming.

The male continues to guard loosely until the fry become active and disperse. Parents are not generally aggressive toward fry but the brood benefits from a tank with ample surface area for biofilm growth, fine-leaved plants or Java moss for cover, and supplemental microfood (infusoria, commercial fry powders, or very finely crushed wafers) in the first weeks.

In the aquarium

At 8.5 in SL (roughly 10–11 in total length including caudal filaments) S. nigrirostrum requires a reasonably spacious tank. A minimum footprint of around 120 × 17.5 in (roughly 55 US gal) is appropriate for a single adult or a pair; groups with multiple males need proportionally more space with adequate visual breaks between territories. The elongated body plan needs horizontal swimming room, and narrow tanks stress the fish.

Water parameters should reflect the Ucayali soft-water environment: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and soft to moderately hard water (ideally below 10 dH). The species is sensitive to poor water quality; dissolved oxygen should be high, ammonia and nitrite zero, and nitrate managed with regular partial water changes (25–30% weekly). Good circulation and oxygenation benefit this facultative air-breather but it does not require the near-torrent conditions of some rheophilic loricariids.

Decoration should include smooth driftwood as a grazing and visual-break element, flat slate or similar spawning substrates if breeding is intended, and robust plants that can tolerate a biofilm grazer working their leaves (Anubias, Microsorum on wood are ideal). Fine-leaved carpet plants or delicate stems may be mown by an active grazer and are better avoided.

S. nigrirostrum is peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates and rarely bothers other species. It is best kept with calm fish that will not nip its trailing fin extensions — avoid fin-nipping tetras and aggressive cichlids. Suitable companions include peaceful mid-water schooling fish (small tetras, rasboras, small barbs) and Corydoras. A second Sturisoma male in a small tank is inadvisable due to territorial tension around spawning surfaces.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Sturisoma nigrirostrum as Least Concern in 2014 (last formal assessment as of writing). The species has a relatively broad distribution across the Ucayali basin and upper Amazon drainages of Peru, including the Marañón and Yavari systems, and there is no evidence of severe range contraction or rapid population decline.

The Ucayali basin faces ongoing pressures from agricultural encroachment, deforestation of riparian zones, gold-mining sediment pulses in tributary headwaters, and hydroelectric development. Backwater microhabitats with driftwood accumulations — precisely the environments S. nigrirostrum favours — can be disrupted by channelisation, dredging, and the removal of large woody debris. The species is collected for the ornamental trade, though it is not exported in high volume compared with more commercially prominent whiptail species. Aquarium breeding is documented and feasible, offering a route to reducing wild-collection pressure on this and related Sturisoma species.
