Taxonomy & naming
Sturisoma tenuirostre was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1910 as Oxyloricaria tenuirostris, based on material collected from the Rio Meta in Venezuela (as stated in the original paper's title: 'Über eine noch unbeschriebene Oxyloricaria-Art aus dem Rio Meta in Venezuela'). The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Sturisoma and the epithet adjusted to the masculine form tenuirostre to match the genus gender. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Sturisoma tenuirostre (Steindachner, 1910).
A comprehensive revision of Sturisoma published in the Journal of Fish Biology in 2024 (Londoño-Burbano et al.) formally confirmed S. tenuirostre as a valid, distinct species within the Meta basin clade, separating it from other Meta-drainage Sturisoma on the basis of morphological characters including the pectoral-fin ray count of i,6 — fewer than most congeners.
The genus name Sturisoma combines the German Sturio (sturgeon) and the Greek soma (body), evoking the elongated, torpedo-like profile reminiscent of a small sturgeon. The specific epithet tenuirostre derives from the Latin tenuis (slender, fine) and rostrum (beak or snout), referring to the distinctively narrow snout characteristic of this species.
Morphology
S. tenuirostre reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 5 in SL, making it the smallest species in the genus; most Sturisoma congeners reach 7.5–11 in SL. The body plan is the classic Sturisoma form: strongly depressed, widest across the head and pectoral girdle, tapering sharply to a long caudal filament. The snout is notably narrow — the most diagnostic character encoded in the species epithet — and is more elongated relative to head width than in larger congeners.
The pectoral-fin ray count of i,6 is lower than in most Sturisoma, providing a meristic character useful for distinguishing the species from sympatric relatives. The dorsal surface is armoured with interlocking bony scutes; the ventral surface is unplated. Coloration is typically a warm brown with scattered darker spots or a reticulated pattern on the head and body, providing camouflage on sandy and rocky substrates.
As with other Sturisoma, breeding males develop hypertrophied odontodes on the interoperculum (cheek bristles) and along the pectoral fin spines. Females are broader-bodied when gravid and lack the pronounced cheek odontodes. Sturisoma as a genus is also distinguished from other Loricariinae by the habit of depositing eggs on flat open surfaces and guarding them externally, rather than spawning in enclosed cavities.
Habitat
The species is known from the Meta River basin, an Orinoco tributary draining the eastern slopes of the Colombian Andes and flowing eastward across the Llanos plains into Venezuela. The original Steindachner collection was made in the Rio Meta 'in Venezuela', likely reflecting lower-Meta reaches as the river approaches the Orinoco confluence; the 2024 revision confirms Colombia as the primary range, with Venezuelan records from the Orinoco drainage component.
The Meta basin encompasses a range of river types: clear, fast-flowing Andean piedmont streams in the upper reaches, and slower, turbid Llanos rivers in the lower basin. Sturisoma species in this system are associated with areas of moderate to strong current and hard substrates — sand, gravel, and exposed rock — where flat surfaces are available for egg-laying. No specific water chemistry data (pH, temperature, conductivity) from S. tenuirostre collection sites have been published in available sources.
S. tenuirostre is a freshwater demersal species. Like other Loricariidae it is a facultative air-breather, capable of gulping atmospheric oxygen when dissolved oxygen in the water falls below optimal levels.
Feeding
S. tenuirostre, like other Sturisoma, is a microalgivore and biofilm grazer. The ventrally positioned, disc-like mouth with fine teeth is adapted for rasping periphyton, diatoms, algae, and fine organic detritus from rock and wood surfaces. The FishBase trophic level of 2.5 (±0.2) assigned to the species is consistent with a diet dominated by plant material and associated microbial organisms.
Sturisoma species are among the most algae-focused loricariids in the hobby, showing a strong preference for green algal growth over wood-based foods. In aquaria, S. tenuirostre should be offered algae wafers, spirulina-enriched foods, blanched green vegetables (courgette, cucumber, lettuce, spinach), and access to surfaces carrying natural algae growth. Supplementary protein in the form of small live or frozen invertebrates (brine shrimp, Daphnia) is accepted and beneficial for conditioning breeding adults.
Mating
Courtship in Sturisoma differs from many other loricariid genera in that it plays out in open water and on flat exposed surfaces rather than centred on a cave entrance. Males develop conspicuous cheek bristles — hypertrophied interopercular odontodes — that are displayed in rivalry and courtship interactions. A male in breeding condition actively courts females by following and nudging them, guiding a receptive female toward a prepared flat surface on which he has cleaned away algae and debris to expose the substrate.
Rival males engage in lateral displays and may use their pectoral spines in physical contacts. In groups, a dominant male will generally monopolise a preferred spawning site. Conditioning adults with a protein-enriched diet and providing slightly cooler water with strong oxygenation — mimicking dry-season Andean piedmont conditions in the Meta system — can stimulate courtship behaviour in captivity.
Breeding
Sturisoma is one of the best-studied loricariid genera in terms of captive reproduction, and S. tenuirostre is expected to follow the pattern well documented for the genus. Unlike most loricariids, Sturisoma spawns on flat, open surfaces rather than inside cavities — broad leaves, smooth flat rocks, aquarium glass, or driftwood faces are all used. The female deposits adhesive eggs in a compact cluster, and the male immediately takes up a position directly over or beside the clutch to guard and fan it.
Paternal care is intensive and continuous: the male fans the clutch with his pectoral fins and caudal fin for the entire incubation period, typically 5–8 days at temperatures of 75–79 °F, removing any infertile or fungused eggs. This open-surface egg-guarding behaviour makes spawning events highly visible and is one of the reasons Sturisoma are popular breeding subjects with catfish enthusiasts. Fry emerge bearing the adult body plan in miniature and begin rasping algae and biofilm within days of absorbing their yolk sacs.
Clutch sizes for S. tenuirostre specifically have not been published. Larger Sturisoma species produce clutches of 30–100 eggs; the smaller size of S. tenuirostre suggests clutches toward the lower end of this range. Water quality during rearing should be excellent — high oxygen, low nitrates, and moderate current.
In the aquarium
S. tenuirostre's small size — the smallest Sturisoma, maxing out near 5 in SL — makes it one of the more manageable royal whiptails for moderately sized set-ups. A tank of 39.5–47 in length is appropriate for a pair or small group; larger Sturisoma species typically require 59 in or more. Current should be moderate to brisk, well oxygenated, and filtration efficient, reflecting the Meta basin piedmont environment.
A sandy or fine-gravel substrate with smooth rocks and broad-leaved plants (Anubias, Echinodorus) provides both resting surfaces and potential spawning sites. Flat pieces of slate or smooth river stone should be included to offer the open spawning surfaces preferred by the genus. Driftwood is beneficial but not as central as for wood-rasping loricariids; algae growth on glass and hardscape is actively sought out and beneficial to leave undisturbed on at least some surfaces.
Water chemistry should reflect the Meta basin origin: temperature 72–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. S. tenuirostre is peaceful toward other species and compatible with small, calm community fish that will not nip its flowing caudal filament. Avoid fast, boisterous tankmates. The species can be kept in pairs or trios; multiple males may establish hierarchies but usually coexist without serious injury if space and spawning sites are adequate.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Sturisoma tenuirostre as Least Concern in 2009 (assessment by Reis, R. & Lima, F., IUCN ref. e.T167689A6368150). At the time of assessment, the Meta River basin — while subject to some agricultural and urban pressures in the Colombian Llanos — did not present evidence of range-wide population decline for the species.
The Meta basin has seen increasing pressure since the 2009 assessment from agricultural expansion, cattle ranching, oil extraction, and associated sedimentation in tributaries. The 2024 taxonomic revision by Londoño-Burbano et al. that confirmed the species' validity did not include an updated threat assessment, so the 2009 Least Concern listing remains the current status. Given the species' restricted range relative to more widespread congeners and its small body size, updated monitoring would be valuable. S. tenuirostre is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade.
