Leiodon cutcutia, the ocellated puffer, is a small, round-bodied freshwater tetraodontid of the river plains, floodplains and canals of South and Southeast Asia — from the Ganges delta and Bangladesh east through Myanmar and into the rivers of Indochina. Reaching around 4–6 in in length, it is the best-known representative of the genus Leiodon and holds a notable place in the history of the hobby as the first pufferfish to be successfully bred in captivity. It is a carnivorous durophage with a beak that never stops growing, a belligerent temperament, and a well-documented pattern of male-guarded substrate spawning that sets it apart from the scattering species more familiar to tropical fish keepers.

Taxonomy & naming

Leiodon cutcutia was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822, the same prolific year in which he also gave science Danio rerio and dozens of other freshwater fishes from the Bengal region. His original account placed the species in the then-catchall genus Tetraodon — a broad assemblage that once encompassed most freshwater puffers worldwide.

Over the following two centuries, accumulated molecular and morphological work dissolved that unwieldy genus. Under the current Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names), Tetraodon is now restricted to the African species. The Asian freshwater puffers were progressively reassigned: the large brackish-tolerant forms such as the green spotted puffer and the figure-eight puffer moved to Dichotomyctere, the Mekong river puffers to Pao, the dwarf puffers to Carinotetraodon, and the ocellated puffer along with its closest relatives to Leiodon. Older aquarium and ichthyological literature accordingly refers to this fish as Tetraodon cutcutia — a combination still encountered in hobby sources but no longer valid. The valid name is Leiodon cutcutia (Hamilton, 1822), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Hamilton's original genus.

Morphology

Like all members of the family Tetraodontidae, Leiodon cutcutia has the characteristic stocky, inflatable body plan: a round to oval profile, no true scales (the skin is smooth or bears small prickles), no pelvic fins, and the four fused teeth that give the family its name and form a hard, parrot-like beak. In this species the body is olive to yellowish-brown dorsally, fading to a pale cream or white ventrally, with a pattern of darker blotches or ocelli — eye-like spots — distributed across the flanks and dorsal surface that give it its common name.

Maximum total length is recorded by FishBase at 6 in, with a common length of around 4 in. The species shows subtle sexual dimorphism that is not strongly pronounced: males tend to be somewhat slimmer in the body and display a more defined pattern of markings, while females are deeper-bellied and more rounded when carrying eggs. Like all puffers, this species lacks true gill covers and is effectively scaleless, making it sensitive to copper-based medications and pathogens that exploit skin abrasions.

Habitat

Leiodon cutcutia inhabits the slower-moving and standing freshwaters of the lowland river plains of South and Southeast Asia. Its confirmed range runs from India and Bangladesh — including the Ganges and Brahmaputra floodplains — east through Myanmar and across mainland Indochina into Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. GBIF occurrence data corroborate this broad mainland Asian distribution. The species is also recorded from Sri Lanka.

It occupies rivers, canals, floodplain ponds, beels and estuarine fringe waters, often in shallow habitat with soft substrates and aquatic vegetation. FishBase notes it as potamodromous, meaning it undertakes migrations within freshwater systems rather than entering the sea. It is primarily a freshwater species, though it can tolerate slightly brackish conditions in the lowest estuarine reaches of its range; the core habitat is soft to moderately hard, near-neutral freshwater with temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F and a pH around 6.5–7.5.

Feeding

Leiodon cutcutia is a carnivorous durophage — a specialist crusher of hard-bodied prey. In the wild its diet consists of molluscs, small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, worms and other invertebrates. The four fused teeth forming the beak are adapted precisely for this: they crack snail shells and crustacean exoskeletons with ease, and the muscular jaws generate sufficient force to demolish hard-shelled items that would defeat other small fishes.

The beak is continuously growing tissue, and hard-shelled prey is not merely preferred but physiologically necessary: without sufficient abrasion from crunching shells and crustacean armour, the beak overgrows, eventually preventing the fish from feeding and requiring intervention. Tetrodotoxin, the potent neurotoxin associated with pufferfish, is not synthesised by Leiodon cutcutia itself but is accumulated indirectly through the food chain via cyanobacteria and other sources in prey organisms — this accumulation is dietary and context-dependent rather than a fixed property of the species.

Mating

Leiodon cutcutia is a substrate-spawning species with active parental involvement from the male. Captive breeding research documents a clear sequence: the male establishes and defends a territory around a chosen spawning site — a flat surface, the interior of a hollow object such as an earthen pot or plastic pipe, or a sheltered area among aquatic plants — and then courts a gravid female by displaying to her and inviting her toward the site.

Spawning is a paired event in which the female deposits a batch of large eggs directly onto or near the chosen substrate. The eggs are spherical, translucent and demersal (sinking to the bottom), and strongly adhesive — measured in captivity at approximately 0.5 in in diameter. Once spawning is complete, the female's involvement ends and the male takes sole charge of the clutch.

Breeding

Following spawning, the male remains at the clutch and actively guards and fans the adhesive eggs until hatching. Captive breeding research on this species, the first pufferfish to be bred successfully in an aquarium, records the male fanning the eggs with his fins to maintain oxygenation and chasing away any intruder. The eggs are laid in a single batch and are large relative to the female's body size — a strategy associated with intensive parental care rather than the broadcast spawning typical of species that produce many small eggs with no care.

In aquarium settings, breeding is described as rare and demanding. A dedicated breeding tank with suitable spawning sites (caves, pipes, dense planting), excellent water quality and a well-conditioned pair is required. The male should be allowed to guard the clutch; removing him typically results in the eggs failing. Detailed data on incubation period and fry development under captive conditions are limited in the available literature, but the basic mode — substrate spawning with sole male parental care — is well established.

In the aquarium

Leiodon cutcutia is a freshwater species throughout virtually all of its natural range and should be kept in fresh water in the aquarium; it does not require brackish conditions. Water parameters from FishBase and hobby sources converge on 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5 and moderate hardness. It is a messy, heavy-eating fish that produces significant waste, and its tank needs robust filtration and regular large water changes to maintain the water quality that prevents skin infections in this scaleless species.

Temperament is the dominant management concern. Like the great majority of puffers, Leiodon cutcutia is aggressive and predatory, with a strong tendency to attack the fins and eyes of tankmates. It is best maintained alone or in a species-only setup; community housing is not recommended. A single specimen requires a tank of at least 20–25 US gal with plenty of cover and territory breaks to reduce stress. Hard-shelled food — live or frozen snails, small shellfish and crustaceans — must be offered regularly throughout the fish's life to wear down the continuously growing beak; a beak that overgrows can lock the fish's jaw and requires manual trimming, a stressful procedure best avoided by preventive diet.

As a member of the Tetraodontidae, this species is scaleless and lacks true gill covers, making it highly sensitive to copper-based medications, which must never be used. Other medications should be dosed conservatively. Leiodon cutcutia should never be lifted out of the water in the open air — puffers gulp air to inflate when stressed in air, which can cause internal damage; always use a submerged container to move them. Their skin and organs carry tetrodotoxin accumulated from diet; handling with bare hands after aquarium work involving their waste water should be avoided, and the fish should never be consumed.

Conservation

Leiodon cutcutia is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2009 assessment). The species has a broad native range spanning the river systems and floodplain waters of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka, and its ability to occupy a variety of habitat types — rivers, canals, ponds and floodplain depressions — provides it with a degree of resilience that more habitat-specialist species lack.

Long-term pressures nonetheless accumulate across its range. The lowland river plains and floodplains of South and Southeast Asia have been extensively modified by agriculture, irrigation infrastructure, dam construction and urban growth, reducing the extent and connectivity of suitable freshwater habitat. Pollution from agricultural runoff and domestic waste degrades water quality across major river systems throughout the region. Leiodon cutcutia is also collected for the aquarium trade, though not at the intensity applied to some other Asian puffers, and captive breeding has reduced but not eliminated wild collection pressure. The 2009 IUCN assessment reflects the species' overall abundance and range at that time; continued monitoring in the context of ongoing basin-scale habitat modification remains important.
