Elassoma boehlkei, the Carolina pygmy sunfish, is one of the smallest freshwater fishes in North America, rarely exceeding 1 in and topping out around 1.5 in total length. It is known only from a handful of blackwater swamps, ditches, and slow streams in the Waccamaw and lower Santee drainages of North Carolina and South Carolina, a range so narrow that the species is state-listed as Threatened in both states and assessed as Vulnerable. Despite its sunfish name, it belongs to its own family, Elassomatidae, entirely separate from the true sunfishes — and in breeding dress the male turns a deep black barred with iridescent blue, a striking transformation packed into a fish scarcely longer than a fingernail.

Taxonomy & naming

Elassoma boehlkei was described by Robert E. Rohde and Ralph G. Arndt in 1987, one of several pygmy sunfish species named from the Carolinas in the late twentieth century as researchers worked out the boundaries between look-alike populations. The Catalog of Fishes lists it as a valid species in the genus Elassoma, the sole genus of the family Elassomatidae — the pygmy sunfishes.

Despite the common name "sunfish" and a superficial resemblance, Elassoma is not a miniature centrarchid. Older classifications placed the pygmy sunfishes close to or within the sunfish family Centrarchidae, and some field guides still group them there for convenience, but the family has long been recognized as taxonomically distinct, and molecular studies have proposed placements well outside Centrarchidae — in some analyses closer to the sticklebacks (Gasterosteidae). The question is not fully settled, and this article treats Elassomatidae as its own family without adopting one side of that debate.

Morphology

Elassoma boehlkei is one of the smallest vertebrates kept in the aquarium hobby, reaching a maximum of about 1.5 in total length, though most adults stop well short of that at around 1 in. The body is deep for its length and laterally compressed, carried on a rounded caudal fin rather than the forked tail typical of larger sunfishes. Like other pygmy sunfishes, it lacks a lateral line altogether — a family-wide trait — and its scales do not extend onto the top of the head. The eye is proportionally large and the mouth turns upward, suited to picking prey from just above the substrate or from the water directly overhead.

In everyday dress, both sexes and juveniles are cryptic: an olive to brown ground colour broken by roughly 12 to 13 narrow dark bars along the flanks, without the postocular stripe or shoulder blotch seen in some related Elassoma. Breeding males in the genus turn strikingly different — an inky black ground colour set off by iridescent blue-green flecking and barring — a transformation well documented across Elassoma generally. Species-specific descriptions of E. boehlkei's breeding dress are thin in the literature, but the pattern is consistent with its close relatives and with the genus as a whole.

Habitat

Elassoma boehlkei is a narrow-range endemic, known only from a small part of the coastal plain of North Carolina and South Carolina, in the Waccamaw and lower Santee River drainages. In North Carolina it is restricted to the Waccamaw basin in Brunswick and Columbus counties; the type locality is Juniper Creek, a Waccamaw drainage tributary.

The species lives at the shallow, densely vegetated edges of the region's characteristically dark, tannin-stained waters — swamps, roadside ditches, and small, slow streams with little current, often connected to blackwater creeks and Carolina bay lakes. FishBase records a tolerated temperature range of roughly 50–77 °F and a pH from about 5.5 to 7.2, consistent with a coastal-plain habitat that cools sharply in winter and warms through a humid Carolina summer — conditions that suit an unheated aquarium rather than a tropical one.

Feeding

Like the rest of its genus, Elassoma boehlkei is a strict micropredator, picking microcrustaceans and other tiny invertebrates from among plant stems and detritus rather than grazing or scavenging. It hunts by sight and responds to movement — prey that doesn't wiggle is often ignored outright.

In the aquarium this translates into a firm requirement for live or frozen foods: newly hatched brine shrimp, daphnia, grindal worms, microworms, and small blackworms are all taken readily, while flake, pellet, and freeze-dried foods are typically refused. Keepers who cannot commit to live or frozen food several times a week should not keep this species.

Mating

During the spring-through-summer spawning season, males establish and defend small territories within dense vegetation, where courtship and spawning both take place. As in other Elassoma, a male in breeding condition darkens dramatically, and the resulting black-and-blue display is presumed to function in both signaling to rival males and courting females that enter his territory — a pattern documented for the genus, though detailed behavioural accounts specific to E. boehlkei are scarce.

Pairs spawn repeatedly among plant stems over the course of the season rather than in a single event, consistent with the extended spring-through-summer spawning window recorded for the species.

Breeding

Eggs are deposited in dense vegetation and woody debris rather than on a nest or clean substrate, placed singly or in small groups among plant stems where they adhere and are left. Clutch size has not been established in the sources available for this species. Reported hatching time is 10 to 14 days, after which fry are free-swimming and need infusoria-sized foods before graduating to microworms and newly hatched brine shrimp.

Parental care beyond egg placement is not well documented specifically for E. boehlkei; some hobbyist accounts describe a guarding male, consistent with behavior reported elsewhere in the genus, but this has not been confirmed by primary literature for this species. Like most pygmy sunfishes, E. boehlkei is generally regarded as short-lived — often described as close to annual in the wild — though a firm published lifespan figure specific to this species was not found.

In the aquarium

Elassoma boehlkei suits a dedicated, unheated species tank far better than a community setup. It does not need warmth — coastal-plain winters bring it down near 50 °F and it thrives through an unheated summer up into the mid-20s°C — and it does best in a densely planted tank with plenty of Java moss or similar fine-leaved cover, soft to neutral water, and minimal flow, echoing the swamps and ditches it comes from. A modest tank, on the order of 10 US gal, suits a pair or a small harem-style group.

Because it will only eat live or frozen foods that move, this is not a low-maintenance fish for a mixed community, and it is easily outcompeted or even eaten by larger, faster tankmates. Shrimp and small snails make reasonable companions; larger or more active fish generally do not.

Conservation

Elassoma boehlkei is assessed as Vulnerable, reflecting its very small range and the pressures on the coastal-plain wetlands it depends on — agricultural runoff and land conversion, drainage and development, and climate-driven changes to the hydrology of the Waccamaw and Santee systems. It is listed as a State Threatened species in both North Carolina and South Carolina.

The species was included in a 2011 petition asking the US Fish and Wildlife Service to consider federal Endangered Species Act listing for 404 southeastern species; USFWS found that the petition presented substantial information indicating that listing might be warranted, but the species has not been federally listed. Conservation Fisheries, Inc. propagated E. boehlkei in captivity from 2001 to 2006 and established that the species can be reliably bred and reared outside its native waters, work that could support future reintroduction or head-start efforts.
