Taxonomy & naming
Elassoma zonatum was described by David Starr Jordan in 1877, the first named member of a small and unusual North American genus. The Catalog of Fishes places it in the family Elassomatidae, the pygmy sunfishes, which contains only the single genus Elassoma and about seven recognized species, all confined to the southeastern United States. Despite the common name and a superficial resemblance, the pygmy sunfishes are not classified within the true sunfish family Centrarchidae; the two groups have traditionally been treated as close relatives within the same broader order, but molecular studies have proposed other placements for Elassomatidae among the spiny-rayed fishes, and the question of its exact affinities is not fully settled.
Elassoma zonatum is both the type species of the genus and the largest of the seven, and it also has by far the widest range — most of its relatives are narrow regional endemics, while E. zonatum spans a large stretch of the American South. The epithet zonatum is Latin for "banded," a reference to the row of dark vertical bars along its flanks, the species' most consistent field mark.
Morphology
The banded pygmy sunfish is a diminutive fish, reaching at most about 2 in in total length, with most adults closer to 1–1.5 in. The body is short, deep and laterally compressed, carried on a single rounded caudal fin, with a dark spot at the base of the pectoral fin and several irregular dark vertical bars running down the flanks over an olive to brown ground colour. Like the rest of its family, it lacks a lateral line — a trait that separates the Elassomatidae from the true sunfishes they superficially resemble.
Outside the breeding season, both sexes and juveniles wear the same cryptic brown-and-bar pattern, effective camouflage against submerged stems and leaf litter. In breeding condition the picture changes: males darken toward black and develop a scatter of iridescent blue-green points across the body and fins, a display reserved for the spawning season, while females stay in their duller everyday dress even when ready to spawn.
Habitat
Elassoma zonatum occupies still and slow-flowing lowland waters across a large part of the American South: the Mississippi River drainage from southern Illinois and Indiana south toward the Gulf, and separately the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains from North Carolina to Texas. Within that range it favors eutrophic wetlands — swamps, heavily vegetated sloughs, backwaters and small sluggish streams — typically over soft mud bottoms thick with submerged and emergent plants, where it stays close to cover and is rarely seen in open water.
Water conditions in these habitats swing with the seasons but stay within a fairly moderate band: roughly 50–77 °F and a near-neutral pH of 6.5–7.5, over moderately hard water. The species tolerates the seasonal range of shallow coastal-plain wetlands, including cool winter temperatures well below what most aquarium fish would accept, but it depends on dense vegetation for shelter and disappears quickly from waters that lose their plant cover.
Feeding
Elassoma zonatum is a sight-feeding micropredator, picking off small moving prey one at a time rather than grazing or filtering. Wild fish take mostly moving microcrustaceans, along with insect larvae such as chironomid midges and mayfly nymphs, amphipods and isopods, and occasionally snail eggs and small clams.
In the aquarium it needs live or frozen foods of a similarly small size — newly hatched brine shrimp, daphnia and microworms all work — because it typically refuses dry food outright. Feeding is the main obstacle to keeping the species long-term: a keeper who cannot maintain a live-food supply will struggle with it.
Mating
Breeding males establish and defend a small territory within dense vegetation, and it is there that courtship takes place. Observations from Arkansas populations describe males in breeding dress performing a vigorous, sustained display — fin-waggling combined with continuous up-and-down swimming — to draw a receptive female into the territory. The display is the clearest expression of the species' seasonal transformation, turning a normally drab, hidden fish conspicuous and active for a few weeks each spring.
Spawning runs from mid-March into early May in Arkansas, coinciding with rising water temperatures and the vegetation growth that will later shelter the eggs. Beyond the male's territorial display and courtship there is no evidence of any pair bond beyond the immediate act of spawning.
Breeding
Elassoma zonatum lays small, adhesive eggs — roughly 0.5 in across — directly onto submerged aquatic vegetation; hornwort is specifically documented as a spawning substrate for the species. A single spawning event yields somewhere between 30 and 150 eggs, and over a breeding season a female lays roughly 80 eggs in total, spread across several batches over a period of days. The eggs hatch quickly, with larvae rupturing their shells after only four to five days.
Parental care is limited to the male, who guards the nest site and defends the spawning territory after the eggs are laid, but does not tend the larvae directly once they hatch. Wild banded pygmy sunfish are short-lived, typically reaching about two and a half years of age with a maximum of around three, so most individuals get only one or two breeding seasons in a lifetime.
In the aquarium
Elassoma zonatum is a cool-water species best kept in an unheated or lightly heated species tank rather than a tropical community — its native range sees winter temperatures well below what most aquarium fish tolerate, and it does poorly in the steady high heat of a typical tropical setup. Dense planting, particularly thick stands of Java moss or other fine-leaved plants, gives it the cover it needs to feel secure enough to be seen at all; in a bare tank it simply hides.
The live-food requirement is the real barrier to keeping it well: it generally refuses dry food, so a keeper needs a running supply of daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii or microworms, especially to raise the tiny fry. Because of its size and its reluctance to compete for food, it is not a community fish — even modestly sized or boisterous tankmates will outcompete or intimidate it. Shrimp and small snails make safe, non-competing companions in a dedicated Elassoma tank. Kept this way, with clean, cool, well-planted water and a reliable live-food supply, it is a rewarding fish for a patient keeper rather than a first species.
Conservation
Elassoma zonatum is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its wide range and generally stable populations across the Mississippi and the Gulf and Atlantic coastal-plain drainages. It is not listed as federally endangered or threatened in the United States.
That range-wide security does not hold everywhere. In Illinois, at the northern edge of the species' range, it has contracted to a handful of watersheds in the southern part of the state and has drawn state-level conservation review. The main pressures across its range are habitat destruction, pollution and changes in water quality — particularly loss of the dense submerged vegetation the species depends on for both shelter and spawning — and it is preyed on by grass pickerel, bowfins, water snakes, livebearing fishes and fish-eating birds.
