Taxonomy & naming
Elassoma gilberti was described by Snelson, Krabbenhoft and Quattro in 2009, in the Bulletin of the Florida Museum of Natural History (48(4): 120–144), as one half of a species pair split out of the previously broader Elassoma okefenokee. The family Elassomatidae — the pygmy sunfishes — contains a single genus, Elassoma, of roughly a dozen species confined to the coastal plain of the southeastern United States. Despite the common name, the family is not a group of miniature Centrarchidae (the true sunfishes and basses); it has traditionally been classified near the Centrarchidae on the basis of general similarity, but molecular studies have proposed other relationships for the family within the acanthomorph fishes, and its precise placement remains an open question rather than one settled by resemblance alone.
The split from E. okefenokee rests on genetics as much as anatomy: E. gilberti differs from its sister species by eight fixed differences at the mitochondrial 16S rRNA locus and twelve at the nuclear S7 locus, and the two are further diagnosable by small counts — four preopercular canal pores rather than three, usually seven anal-fin rays rather than eight, and a slightly less deep body. The two species overlap in the lower Suwannee River drainage of northern Florida and southern Georgia, where they remain genetically distinct without having been collected together at the same site. Because gilberti is the newer name, older literature or hobby records labeled simply "Elassoma okefenokee" from Gulf-slope Florida drainages west and south of the Suwannee should be read with the 2009 split in mind — many of those fish are now referable to E. gilberti.
Morphology
This is one of the smallest fishes native to North America. Standard length tops out around 1 in, with males reaching about 1 in total length and remaining slightly larger than females. The body is short and deep for its size, and rounded off by a broad, rounded caudal fin rather than a forked one — a shape shared across the family. Like other members of Elassomatidae, E. gilberti lacks a lateral line, a family-wide trait, and relies on other sensory systems to detect movement in the water around it.
Coloration is where the sexes and seasons diverge sharply. Nonbreeding fish and females are cryptic — a mottled olive-brown to gray body that blends into leaf litter and vegetation. Breeding females add a row of pale blue dashes below and behind the eye. A breeding male is a different animal altogether: the body turns almost jet black, and iridescent blue-green markings appear across the dorsal, anal, pelvic, and caudal fins — a vivid pattern on a fish smaller than a fingernail.
Habitat
Elassoma gilberti occupies Gulf-slope drainages of the Florida panhandle and peninsula, from around Choctawhatchee Bay south to the Withlacoochee and Homosassa drainages in west-central Florida, with an additional population in the lower Suwannee River drainage of northwestern Florida and southwestern Georgia. The type locality lies near Tallahassee. Within this range the species keeps to slack water — quiet backwaters, seepage streams, and ditches rather than open river channel — thick with submerged and emergent vegetation and a litter of fallen leaves, where it hides from predators and hunts at close range.
These habitats are typically shallow and still, often stained brown with tannins leached from decaying leaves, and the water tends toward soft and acidic conditions. Temperature swings with the seasons rather than staying constant: reported natural occurrence spans roughly 39–72 °F, with the fish most active in the 59–75 °F range, so a Gulf Coast pygmy sunfish experiences a real winter cooldown and a warm, humid Florida summer within the same year.
Feeding
Elassoma gilberti is an exclusively carnivorous micropredator. It takes small aquatic insects and their larvae, tiny crustaceans, and worms from among the vegetation it inhabits, and hunts by patient, close-range stalking rather than by pursuit. Its small mouth limits it to prey it can swallow whole.
In the aquarium this translates directly: live foods — daphnia, grindal worms, mosquito larvae, and brine shrimp — along with thawed frozen bloodworms, are readily taken and effectively required, while dry flake or pellet food is usually refused. Daily feeding is recommended, given the fish's tiny size and correspondingly small energy reserves.
Mating
A breeding male stakes out a small territory within dense vegetation and defends it in his black, blue-barred breeding dress — the same coloration that signals reproductive readiness to females and rivals alike. When a receptive female approaches, the male performs an undulating, fin-flicking display, then leads her toward his chosen spot within the plants. There is no elaborate nest structure; the vegetation itself, within the male's territory, is the spawning site.
Breeding
Elassoma gilberti is an egg-scatterer. Eggs are deposited a few at a time among dense aquatic vegetation: the male leads the female into his territory, then vibrates alongside her as she releases eggs, which he fertilizes on the spot. The female has been observed eating some of her own eggs even as she continues to lay others — a form of egg cannibalism also documented in other Elassoma species. The male stands guard over the territory afterward, though how much active fry care he provides beyond this proximity has not been documented for this species.
Clutch size and incubation time have not been established in the published literature available for E. gilberti specifically. Like other pygmy sunfishes, it is thought to be short-lived: individuals typically mature within their first year and live only a year or two, a life-history pattern common among small fishes of temporary, seasonal habitats. Precise longevity data specific to this species, however, has not been published.
In the aquarium
The Gulf Coast pygmy sunfish suits a nano or species tank, not a community aquarium. It thrives at room temperature — no heater is needed, and it does well anywhere from about 59–75 °F — but it needs dense live planting rather than open swimming space. Java moss, Susswassertang, Riccia, dwarf hairgrass, or a thick mat of floating plants gives it the cover it uses in the wild and the surfaces on which it spawns. A single pair or small harem can be kept in as little as 10 US gal, with additional volume added for each extra male, since males spar over territory when crowded.
Because it is so small and slow-moving, E. gilberti cannot compete with typical community fish for food and is easily bullied or simply outcompeted at feeding time. It does best alone, or with equally unassuming, similarly sized company such as shrimp or small snails that will not raid its eggs or fry. Its live-food requirement is not optional — a diet limited to dry food will starve it over time — so anyone taking on this species needs a reliable culture of daphnia, grindal worms, or similar live foods before bringing fish home. The species breeds readily under these conditions, which has made captive-bred stock increasingly available alongside wild-collected fish.
Conservation
Elassoma gilberti is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Its range, though restricted to Gulf-slope drainages of the Florida panhandle and peninsula, is not currently associated with any major documented threat. No federal Endangered Species Act listing or state-level protected status has been identified for the species — a contrast with some of its relatives, such as Elassoma okatie, which appears on Georgia's endangered species list.
As with many small fishes restricted to coastal-plain streams and wetlands, the long-term outlook for E. gilberti depends on the condition of Florida's spring-fed and blackwater streams, which face pressure from water withdrawal, development, and wetland drainage across the state. No species-specific threat assessment has been published, so the Least Concern rating reflects a currently secure but geographically limited species rather than an exhaustively studied one.
