Pygmy sunfish · names

Every name, resolved

A pygmy sunfish is known by a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and by an established English common name — “banded”, “Everglades”, “Okefenokee”, “bluebarred”, “spring”. The names are steadier than in most families, but not fixed: the Gulf Coast pygmy sunfish travelled under okefenokee until 2009, and the whole genus is still casually — and wrongly — lumped with the true sunfishes. This index cross-references both layers — the 7 scientific names and 7 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — the established English names for the species, including the ones the native-fish hobby uses (the “Everglades pygmy sunfish” is Elassoma evergladei). Each entry is tagged with its range group. Beware the family’s name itself: pygmy sunfishes are Elassomatidae, not small Centrarchidae.
