Chilatherina lorentzii is a slender, little-kept rainbowfish of the rainforest streams of northern New Guinea, a fish better known from the history of its rediscovery than from any aquarium. Collected by a Dutch expedition in the early twentieth century and then effectively lost for some seventy years until the ichthyologist Gerald Allen turned it up again, it is a quietly handsome species — olive-backed, silvery-flanked, the males marked by a dark mid-lateral stripe — and one the IUCN now lists as Near Threatened on account of its restricted range.

Taxonomy & naming

Chilatherina lorentzii was described by the Dutch zoologist Max Weber in 1907, on material gathered during early Dutch exploration of northern Netherlands New Guinea (now the Indonesian province of Papua). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats it as a valid species of the genus Chilatherina, one of several rainbowfish genera in the family Melanotaeniidae, the true rainbowfishes and blue eyes of New Guinea and Australia. Because the species was not originally placed in Chilatherina as the genus is now circumscribed, the authority is written in parentheses: (Weber, 1907).

The genus name Chilatherina combines the Greek cheilos, meaning 'lip', with atherina, the classical name for the smelt or silverside, a nod to the rainbowfishes' superficial resemblance to those slender, silvery fishes. The specific epithet lorentzii is a patronym honouring Hendrikus Albertus Lorentz (1871–1944), the Dutch explorer and diplomat after whom several New Guinea features and organisms are named. Within Melanotaeniidae, Chilatherina species are distinguished from the larger genus Melanotaenia by body proportions and fin structure rather than by colour alone, and C. lorentzii sits among the northern New Guinea members of the genus.

Morphology

Chilatherina lorentzii is an elongate, laterally compressed rainbowfish. FishBase records a maximum size of about 4 in standard length, drawn from Allen's 1991 field guide to the freshwater fishes of New Guinea; hobby sources cite larger field figures of around 4.5 in, which are best read as total-length measurements of unusually large individuals. As in other rainbowfishes the dorsal fin is divided into a short spinous portion and a longer soft-rayed portion, with reported counts of roughly five to seven dorsal spines and twelve to fifteen soft rays, a single anal spine, and a long anal fin of around twenty-six to thirty soft rays.

The colour pattern is understated by the standards of the showier rainbowfishes. The back is brown to olive, the flanks shade to bluish or silvery, and the belly is white, the zones blending gradually rather than meeting in a sharp line. The most distinctive feature is found in the males, which carry a broad blackish stripe running along the middle of the body. Females and juveniles are plainer still. As with the family generally, displaying males intensify their colours, and condition, mood, and lighting all change how vivid the fish looks.

Habitat

Chilatherina lorentzii is a freshwater fish of northern New Guinea, recorded from both the Indonesian side (Papua, formerly Irian Jaya) and Papua New Guinea. Documented collection sites include the upper Sermowai River and the Tawarin River on the north coast of West Papua, and Puive Creek — a tributary of the Pual River near Vanimo in Sandaun (West Sepik) Province of Papua New Guinea. The recorded latitude band is roughly 2 to 3 degrees south, placing it firmly in the equatorial lowland forest belt.

The Puive Creek habitat described by collectors gives the clearest picture of the species' preferences: a creek shaded by dense rainforest, with slow-flowing water over a bottom of leaf litter, the fish found near submerged logs and aquatic plants. Reported water conditions are warm and hard to alkaline, with temperatures of about 79–86 °F, pH at or above 7.5, and hardness up to around 15 dH. This is a clearwater, forest-shaded, gently flowing environment rather than an open lake or fast river — a pelagic-feeding fish of the upper water column in small, well-vegetated streams.

Feeding

Direct dietary studies of Chilatherina lorentzii are sparse, but its biology is consistent with the omnivorous, upper-water-column feeding habit of rainbowfishes generally. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.9, indicating an omnivore that leans somewhat toward animal prey. In its forested-stream habitat the natural diet would comprise small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae and adult insects falling onto the water surface, together with small crustaceans — supplemented by algae and plant material.

In the rare event of aquarium keeping, the species would be expected to behave like its relatives: an undemanding feeder taking good-quality flake and small pellets alongside frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, with some vegetable matter. As an active mid- and upper-water grazer it does best with small feedings spread through the day rather than a single large meal. Because so little of the fish's natural feeding ecology has been documented, specific claims beyond this general pattern would be speculative.

Mating

No detailed account of courtship in Chilatherina lorentzii appears in the available literature, so its reproductive behaviour must be inferred from the well-studied pattern shared across the rainbowfishes. These are egg-scattering, plant-spawning fishes with no parental care, in which males establish display areas and court females with heightened colour and fin-flaring, the activity peaking in the early morning hours after first light. In many rainbowfishes a flickering pale 'courtship band' flashes along the head and nape of a displaying male.

For C. lorentzii, the dark mid-lateral stripe of mature males is the most obvious sexual signal, and males would be expected to intensify their colours when competing for females. As in related species, displays are likely strongest where several males are present, and a receptive female would follow a courting male into fine-leaved vegetation to spawn. Because this is an extrapolation from family-level behaviour rather than from observations of this species, it should be read as the expected pattern rather than as documented fact.

Breeding

There are no records of Chilatherina lorentzii being bred in captivity, and the species is thought to be largely or entirely unkept by aquarists. What can be said about its likely breeding biology comes from the general rainbowfish template, which holds fairly consistent across the family. Rainbowfishes are continuous spawners that scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, the eggs hanging by fine filaments from the spawning medium. Females typically release a few eggs each day over an extended period rather than a single clutch, and the adults offer no care, readily eating their own eggs.

With a population doubling time estimated at 1.4 to 4.4 years, FishBase rates the species' resilience as medium, which is consistent with the moderate fecundity and steady, drawn-out spawning seen across the group. Were the fish to be bred, the usual rainbowfish approach would apply: conditioning a group, providing mops or fine-leaved plants, and removing the spawning medium for separate rearing, with the tiny fry requiring very small first foods. Until the species is actually maintained and spawned, however, any figures for clutch size or incubation time specific to C. lorentzii would be fabrication; the honest position is that its captive breeding is undocumented.

In the aquarium

Chilatherina lorentzii is essentially absent from the aquarium trade and is considered largely unkept by hobbyists, so practical husbandry advice is necessarily provisional and drawn from experience with related rainbowfishes and from the limited field notes on its habitat. The hobby source that profiles the species suggests an arrangement that mirrors its forest-stream home: driftwood, plants, and hiding spots, with floating plants used to soften overhead lighting in keeping with the shaded creeks the fish inhabits.

Water chemistry should follow the species' warm, hard-to-alkaline origins rather than soft-water defaults: a temperature of roughly 79–86 °F and an alkaline pH in the region of 7.5 to 7.8 are indicated by both FishBase and hobby notes. As an active, schooling, peaceful rainbowfish it would be expected to need a group and open swimming space, with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Given its rarity in cultivation, anyone encountering the species should treat its requirements as those of a hard-water New Guinea stream fish and proceed cautiously; there is no established body of aquarium experience to draw on.

Conservation

Chilatherina lorentzii is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B1b(iii), with the assessment dated 3 December 2019 (IUCN taxon 161080164, assessment 161080249). The Near Threatened listing reflects a restricted range in northern New Guinea — an extent of occurrence of about 17,0 mi², with the population itself judged stable but its habitat in continuing decline from oil-palm plantations, logging, settlements, and invasive species. The species is known from only a handful of river systems centred on Jayapura, and a narrowly distributed fish has little buffer against habitat change within its small range. It is not evaluated under CITES or CMS.

The species' history underlines how thinly it is known. After Weber's description from early Dutch expedition material, it was collected by Dr K. Gjellerup in the upper Sermowai River in 1911 and then went essentially unrecorded for some seven decades, until Gerald Allen collected specimens from Puive Creek in 1979. FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low and describes it as harmless, and there is no significant ornamental-trade pressure given its near-total absence from the hobby. The principal conservation concern is therefore habitat: the integrity of the forested lowland streams of northern New Guinea on which this little-studied rainbowfish depends. Some older care pages still list the species as Not Evaluated, which is outdated — the current FishBase and IUCN status is Near Threatened.
