Taxonomy & naming
Glossolepis ramuensis was described by the Australian ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen in 1985. It belongs to the genus Glossolepis within the family Melanotaeniidae — the true rainbowfishes — one of two large radiations (alongside Melanotaenia) that dominate the freshwater fish fauna of New Guinea and tropical Australia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Glossolepis ramuensis Allen, 1985; because the species was described in Glossolepis, where it remains, the authority carries no parentheses.
The genus name Glossolepis is formed from the Greek glossa, meaning tongue, and lepis, meaning scale — a reference to scale characters used in defining the genus. The specific epithet ramuensis is a toponym derived from the Ramu River of northern Papua New Guinea, marking the species' presence in the middle Ramu system. Within Glossolepis the Ramu rainbowfish is one of the smaller, more soberly coloured species, lacking the deep, high-bodied red of its better-known congener Glossolepis incisus. You identify it more by where it comes from and by its fin counts than by any single striking field mark.
Morphology
Glossolepis ramuensis is a small rainbowfish, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2.5 in standard length. The body is fusiform — the more elongate, less deep-bodied shape typical of the smaller rainbowfishes — and, as in all melanotaeniids, bears the family's divided dorsal fin, with a short anterior dorsal followed by a longer posterior dorsal. Counts reported for the species place the dorsal fin at 5 to 7 spines and 9 to 11 soft rays, and the anal fin at a single spine with 19 to 22 soft rays, the long-based anal being characteristic of the family.
It is an understated fish: silvery to faintly coloured rather than vividly pigmented, the tint deepening somewhat in mature, displaying males. Wild colour data is sparse, and the genus's hallmark — the blazing red of G. incisus males — is absent here. What colour the fish does show is mood- and condition-dependent, brightening when a male displays and dulling under stress.
Habitat
The Ramu rainbowfish is a freshwater, benthopelagic species endemic to the northern drainages of Papua New Guinea. Its documented range covers the tributary streams of the Gogol River near Madang and the middle reaches of the Ramu, in the lowland tropics at roughly 5 to 6 degrees south latitude. The distribution is tight — a corner of one coastal region, not a wide-ranging occurrence — and that restriction is the central fact of its conservation profile.
Recorded water conditions for its habitat are warm and close to neutral: temperatures of about 24 to 27 degrees Celsius and a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5, consistent with lowland New Guinea streams. The species shows high biological resilience, with an estimated population doubling time of under fifteen months. But a fast reproductive rate does little to offset the vulnerability of occupying so small a range, where one local change to the streams can reach the whole population at once.
Feeding
Like rainbowfishes generally, Glossolepis ramuensis is an opportunistic omnivore feeding in the middle and upper water column. Its estimated trophic level of around 2.9 places it among the small invertebrate-and-plant feeders, taking insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other tiny aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates along with algae and plant matter — the mixed diet typical of small melanotaeniids in lowland streams.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding. Hobby accounts describe it as accepting a staple of good-quality flake and small pellets supplemented with live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, Daphnia, and bloodworm. A varied diet with a live or frozen component supports better colour and breeding condition than flake alone, and small frequent feedings suit a constantly active grazer better than one large meal.
Mating
Detailed reproductive observations specific to Glossolepis ramuensis in the wild are sparse, but the species follows the well-documented pattern of the rainbowfishes: it is an egg-laying, plant-associated spawner with no parental care. Males are reported to grow slightly larger and to colour up more vividly than females, the difference becoming most pronounced around spawning, when a displaying male intensifies in colour to court a female.
Spawning is not a single seasonal event but spreads over several days, a courting pair releasing a few eggs at a time among fine-leaved vegetation. Keeping the fish in groups encourages the competitive male display that brings them into peak condition, and conditioning a pair or group on live and frozen foods for a couple of weeks beforehand is the standard hobby trigger.
Breeding
In captivity the Ramu rainbowfish breeds as a continuous plant-spawner. Hobby breeding accounts describe conditioning a pair for roughly two weeks on live and frozen foods, then allowing them to spawn over fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or over synthetic spawning mops. Rather than producing a single clutch, the female lays a few adhesive eggs each day across a spawning period that runs over several days, the eggs hanging from the spawning medium by fine filaments.
Because the adults will eat their own eggs, breeders remove the parents — or harvest the mops — to a separate container for rearing. Reported incubation is short, with eggs hatching in roughly 48 hours under aquarium conditions. The tiny fry need very small first foods, typically infusoria, before they are large enough for newly hatched brine shrimp. None of this is unusual for the family — easy plant-spawning, a small daily egg output, a fast hatch, and minute fry that demand infusoria-grade food — and it puts the species within reach of an experienced keeper.
In the aquarium
Glossolepis ramuensis is a peaceful, sociable schooling fish best kept in a group of at least six. It holds the middle levels of the tank and swims constantly. Like other rainbowfishes it jumps, so a tight-fitting lid is essential. At under 3 in it fits more modest community aquaria than the larger rainbowfishes need, provided the school has open water to swim in.
Reported aquarium parameters run slightly warmer and harder than the wild figures: hobby sources suggest temperatures around 25 to 28 degrees Celsius, a pH in the neutral-to-mildly-alkaline range, and moderate hardness of roughly 5 to 13 dGH, while the documented wild conditions are cooler (24 to 27 degrees Celsius) and span pH 6.0 to 7.5. Stable, clean water and good filtration matter more than precise numbers. Pair it with other similarly sized, peaceful, mid-water fishes; it is reported to be long-lived for its size, reaching around five years under good care.
Conservation
Glossolepis ramuensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), in an assessment dated 5 December 2019. The listing reflects the species' small extent of occurrence — confined to the Gogol and middle Ramu drainages of Madang Province in northern Papua New Guinea — together with a continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. A B1 listing of this kind turns chiefly on geographic restriction rather than on a documented crash in numbers: a narrowly distributed fish has little buffer against local threats to its streams.
The species is not evaluated under CITES and is harmless to humans. Its high reproductive resilience gives it some capacity to recover from disturbance, but that is held in check by the small area it occupies, where pressure on habitat quality bears on nearly the whole population. Data is sparse, so the precautionary reading is the obvious one: protecting its few northern-coast drainages is what underpins its long-term security.
