Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma guttata was described in 1989 by Marco Antonio C., Sven O. Kullander and Carlos A. Lasso, in a paper given over to this single new species from the Río Morichal Largo of Venezuela (Acta Biológica Venezuelica, volume 12, parts 3-4, pages 131-139). The holotype, MHNLS 3587 in the Museo de Historia Natural La Salle in Caracas, came from the Río Morichal Largo near the village of San Miguel, in Estado Anzoátegui; paratypes were divided between Venezuelan collections and the Swedish Museum of Natural History. A small tangle of dates follows the fish: the work carries a 1989 cover date — the year Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognizes — while some later authors, such as Staeck, cite 1990, which is why that year still surfaces in older hobby references. Apistogramma itself is a large, unstable genus of small South American cichlids, with well over ninety described species and many more undescribed forms; within it, this species sits in the regani lineage and, more precisely, the macmasteri species group — the higher-bodied, banded apistos of the northern Orinoco and trans-Andean drainages rather than the slimmer Amazonian forms. The genus name pairs Greek apistos (inconstant) with gramma (line), usually read as a nod to the variably developed, often interrupted lateral line of these dwarf cichlids, while the epithet guttata is simply Latin for spotted.
Morphology
This is one of the smaller dwarf cichlids. FishBase lists a maximum of 1.5 in standard length — the snout-to-tail-base measure, excluding the caudal fin — so even a grown male is only a few centimetres, and traded juveniles arrive at one to two centimetres. The body is the moderately deep, laterally compressed shape typical of the macmasteri group. Its signature is the spotting that names it: on the holotype form the flanks carry several parallel rows of round black spots — roughly two rows above the dark lateral band and three below it — a denser, more regimented version of the broken markings seen in related species. The lateral band runs the length of the side, and the caudal peduncle bears a vertically oval blotch. Sexual dimorphism is marked once the fish mature: males grow larger, with extended dorsal and anal fins and stronger colour, while females stay smaller and plainer, turning an intense yellow with bold black markings when they take up brood care. That spotted pattern is not unique to this species, and small or stressed fish are hard to identify — which matters, because several similar spotted forms circulate under the guttata name. Judge live colour on settled, dominant adults, not shop juveniles.
Habitat
Apistogramma guttata is a Venezuelan endemic of the lower Orinoco. The Catalog of Fishes gives its range as the Río San Juan and lower Orinoco basin, but in practice the fish is tied above all to the Río Morichal Largo, an Orinoco-delta tributary running some 124 mi along the border of Anzoátegui and Monagas states. The habitat is the morichal itself: a lowland savanna stream named for the stands of Mauritia flexuosa — the moriche, or wine palm — that shade its banks and shed the leaf litter carpeting its floor. These clear, often spring-fed streams look brown only from the tannins leaching out of that litter; the bed is pale silica sand strewn with decaying fronds, leaves and twigs, with marginal grasses and plants such as Cabomba trailing into the shallows. The water is soft and acidic — in-situ readings run about 79–86 °F, with very low conductivity (roughly 15-30 µS/cm upstream, rising toward 65 µS/cm downstream) and a pH swinging seasonally between about 4.6 and 6.9. Like most small apistos it keeps to the top metre or so of the margins rather than any deep channel; no depth range is published, so 0–3 ft is the honest estimate.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study of Apistogramma guttata exists, and neither the original description nor FishBase carries gut-content data; what can be said responsibly comes from the genus and the habitat. Apistogramma are micropredators — small, bottom-oriented carnivores that take mouthfuls of sediment and leaf litter and sort out the edible items. The expected wild diet is aquatic insect larvae (chironomids and the like), microcrustaceans, worms and other meiofauna sieved from the detrital carpet of the morichal floor, and FishBase's modelled trophic level near 3.2 places the fish firmly among the small invertivores, working the bottom alongside other Orinoco dwarf cichlids, characins and pencilfishes. In aquaria it behaves exactly as that ecology predicts, taking small live and frozen foods — Artemia nauplii, microworm, daphnia, finely chopped bloodworm — readily, while tending to ignore dry flake unless trained onto it.
Mating
Like most of the genus, Apistogramma guttata is a polygynous harem spawner. A single dominant male holds a loose territory that overlaps the smaller, scattered territories of several females, each guarding a cave or sheltered cavity as her nest site. Courtship is mostly the female's doing: as she ripens she colours up into the vivid yellow-and-black brooding dress typical of Apistogramma females and solicits the male, who patrols and defends the wider area. Aggression here is real but small-scale, and it is the females who turn most fiercely territorial around their nests — a male shut in with a single female in too little space can harass her badly. The fish is uncommon enough that repeatable, first-hand accounts of its courtship are thin, so most of what keepers describe tracks the well-documented behaviour of close macmasteri relatives rather than this species itself. Read those reports with the usual caveat that some aquarium 'guttata' are actually related spotted forms.
Breeding
Apistogramma guttata is a cave (or cavity) spawner with maternal care — the standard mode for the genus. The female picks an enclosed site: under wood or a rock, inside a crevice, or in the tank a half-buried flowerpot, coconut shell or spawning cone, and fixes the eggs to its ceiling and walls. From there the labour is sharply female-centred. She alone tends and fans the clutch, then guards the wriggling larvae and, later, the free-swimming fry as she leads them through the leaf litter, while the male defends the surrounding territory rather than the nest itself. No clutch count has been published for the species; small Apistogramma of this size typically lay a few dozen to about a hundred eggs per spawn, and that genus-typical range is the best guide until the species is studied directly. It has been bred in captivity — the Apistogramma specialist Mike Wise reports spawning the true Morichal Largo form in the late 1980s — but it is no aquarium-strain fish, and most trade material is wild-caught. Soft, warm, acidic water and plentiful live foods are the usual triggers, echoing the seasonal swings of its home streams.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma guttata is genuinely uncommon in the hobby. It surfaces in specialist circles now and then — usually as wild-caught Venezuelan imports — but not at a general shop, and confirmed, locality-verified fish are rarer still, because similar spotted forms from neighbouring drainages travel under the same name. Try to establish provenance before buying; the Apistogramma specialist community (notably apistogramma.com) can help tell true Morichal Largo fish from look-alikes. First-hand accounts are thin, so much below borrows from close macmasteri relatives.
Tank: about 15–20 US gal (roughly 23.5 in) suits one male with one to three females — the natural harem. Floor it with fine pale sand, deep leaf litter (Indian almond or beech), driftwood for shade, and several caves — a half-buried coconut shell or an unglazed pot on its side — so each female has an enclosed spawning site. Plant back and sides densely, keep the substrate and background dark, and filter gently with a sponge; bright, high-flow tanks leave these margin fish shy and pale.
Water: soft and acidic matters more here than for most cichlids. Aim for pH 5.0-6.5 and hardness below 5 °dH, using an RO or rainwater blend with peat or botanicals; the wild river runs under 100 µS/cm and as low as pH 4.6 upstream. Hold 79–82 °F, the lower end of the documented 79–86 °F band for long-term maintenance. Whether the species will spawn in harder, more alkaline water, as some relatives do, is unreported, so erring soft and acid is the honest call.
Tankmates: small upper-water characins or pencilfish make good dithers — too big to eat, but drawing the cichlids into the open. Avoid robust, nippy or large fish that could bully a female at her cave; Corydoras can share a roomy bottom, with at least one shelter per female. A lone pair in a small tank is the classic trap, where the male's attention becomes fatal harassment.
Common mistakes: water too hard and alkaline, too much flow, too bare a layout, and a single pair in an undersized tank. Given its rarity, confirmed Morichal Largo fish that are bred and documented add genuinely useful records to a thin body of captive knowledge.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma guttata as Least Concern (assessed 17 May 2017 by Gabriela Echevarría of the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas); it holds no CITES listing and is not judged threatened globally. That label sits uneasily against how small the fish's world is. This is a narrow-range endemic tied to one habitat type — the spring-fed morichal streams of the lower Orinoco — in a single country, and habitat loss here is documented rather than abstract: field observers at the Río Morichal Largo have reported stretches of the bed effectively drying out under regional urbanization and the spread of roads and communities, warning that the moriche-palm habitat the fish depends on may be shrinking. Collection for the trade exists but is sporadic and small in scale, so the more credible long-term threat is to the streams themselves. For a fish this localized, the health of a handful of Orinoco-delta morichales is essentially the health of the species — and the gap between a comfortable 'Least Concern' and a genuinely narrow range is worth keeping in view, since the assessment reflects current data, not a fixed safety margin.
