Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma nororientalis was described by Lina M. Mesa-Salazar and Carlos A. Lasso in 2011, in their monograph 'Revisión del género Apistogramma Regan, 1913 (Perciformes, Cichlidae) en la cuenca del río Orinoco' (Serie Editorial Recursos Hidrobiológicos y Pesqueros Continentales de Colombia, Instituto Humboldt, Bogotá). It was one of several new species the revision split out of long-lumped Orinoco material. The holotype (MHNLS 5876, in the Museo de Historia Natural La Salle, Caracas) came from the morichal Los Pozos on the Río San Juan, about 5 mi from Barrancas, in Estado Monagas, Venezuela, with two paratypes (MHNLS 4648, 8132). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid and endemic to the Gulf of Paria and Orinoco River basin of Venezuela.
The authors placed Apistogramma nororientalis in the regional group around Apistogramma hoignei, which it closely resembles and with which it is reported to be sympatric. Mike Wise, the long-time authority behind the apistogramma.com species index, summarized the revision by grouping nororientalis among the 'new species close to Apistogramma hoignei,' and noted that several other populations long passed off as 'Apistogramma hoignei' across Venezuela and Colombia are likely to prove distinct as well. In practice, then, nororientalis sits in an unsettled cluster of look-alikes. It is a valid name resting on type specimens and diagnostic characters from the original description, but it has drawn no later molecular or revisionary work, and live identification in the field remains difficult.
Morphology
Detailed morphometrics live only in the 2011 original description, which was based on three preserved type specimens. This is a small, comparatively deep-bodied Apistogramma: the male holotype (MHNLS 5876) measures 1.5 in standard length, a male paratype 1.5 in, and a female paratype 1 in, giving an overall range of 0.5–1.5 in SL — so roughly 1.5 in SL at the top end, or perhaps 2 in in total length, modest even for a dwarf cichlid. FishBase carries no maximum-length figure, and hobby sources that quote 2–3 in total length should be read as indicative rather than authoritative, since they are not tied to the type series. The body is deepest in its anterior portion, with a triangular snout and a dorsal profile a little more curved than the ventral.
The species is separated from its relatives by characters set out in the description: a trace-like (rastro) axillary blotch and longitudinal abdominal lines, closely set eyes, and the shape of the rectangular dark-brown caudal blotch — all of which distinguish it from Apistogramma hoignei, which lacks body markings entirely, and from the other Orinoco 'immaculate-tailed' Apistogramma the authors compared it against. The sexes differ: males carry a rounded caudal fin with short filamentous lobe extensions and a thin marginal black band on the caudal, while females are smaller and show a thin black ventral midline, a breast spot, and black pigment on the pelvic spine and a soft ray. Because the diagnosis is fine-grained and the live colour pattern is so close to Apistogramma hoignei, experienced aquarists warn that one or two photographs are rarely enough to tell the two apart; beyond the formal diagnosis, no independent description of live coloration has been published for verified type-locality fish.
Habitat
Apistogramma nororientalis is endemic to the far northeast of Venezuela, in the Orinoco basin and Gulf of Paria drainages of Estado Monagas and Estado Anzoátegui. The type locality is a morichal — a creek shaded by stands of the moriche palm (Mauritia flexuosa) — called Los Pozos, on the Río San Juan near Barrancas, at roughly 9°54'N, 63°36'W (an approximate coordinate, taken from the type-locality data in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes). The species falls within the Orinoco Delta and Coastal Drainages freshwater ecoregion.
Morichales of this region are warm, soft, acidic blackwater streams over sandy bottoms with thick leaf litter — the classic Apistogramma microhabitat. No in-situ water chemistry has been published specifically for nororientalis; hobby accounts cite acidic, soft conditions (around pH 4.5–5.5, low hardness, roughly 73–81 °F), which fits the broader morichal habitat but is aquarium-trade guidance rather than measured field data. Depth is unrecorded, and these are shallow marginal waters rather than open-channel habitat.
Feeding
No diet study exists for Apistogramma nororientalis. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, in line with the rest of the genus. Like other small Apistogramma of leaf-littered blackwater creeks, it is almost certainly a micro-predator, picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other meiofauna — from the substrate and detritus rather than specializing on any one prey. Any more specific account would be extrapolation from its relatives, not observation of this species.
Mating
The courtship and social behaviour of Apistogramma nororientalis have not been documented. By the strong pattern across the genus, it is expected to be a haremic or facultatively pair-forming dwarf cichlid: a male holds a territory that overlaps the smaller cave-territories of one or more females, and each female colours up and turns sharply territorial as she comes into spawning condition. This is a genus-level inference and should be read as such — there are no published observations of pairing, display, or territoriality specific to this species, in the wild or in captivity.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for this species, and hobby sources explicitly note no reports of captive reproduction. On the near-universal Apistogramma pattern, it is expected to be a cave-spawning substrate brooder with predominantly maternal care — the female tending a clutch of adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of a cavity, then guiding the free-swimming fry, while the male defends the wider territory. Clutch size, fry development, and spawning triggers are all unrecorded for Apistogramma nororientalis; the mode given here is inferred from the genus, not observed.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma nororientalis is, as of this writing, essentially absent from the hobby. No verified import under this name has been documented, and the few fish that have circulated as 'Apistogramma hoignei or close relative' from northeastern Venezuela were never confirmed to type. Anything bought under a hoignei-complex label could be nororientalis, Apistogramma hoignei in the strict sense, or an undescribed form — and there is no reliable way to separate them from photographs alone. The husbandry below is therefore built almost entirely from inference grounded in the species' known biology, its morichal habitat, and the well-documented care of close congeners. Treat it as a starting framework, not established practice.
Tank: because males in the type series reach only about 1.5 in standard length — call it 2 in total length at most — a single pair can in principle live in a tank as small as 15 US gal, though an 80–100-litre footprint is more practical for a harem of one male and two or three females. Use fine white or tan sand, kept shallow, under a thick layer of dried leaves (Indian almond, beech, or oak) to stand in for the morichal leaf litter. Provide several small caves — coconut-shell halves, terra-cotta pots on their sides, or commercial ceramic caves — at least one per female plus a spare or two, set out of sight of each other to ease female-on-female aggression. Some floating or slow-growing plants diffuse the overhead light and give the fish cover.
Water: chemistry matters more here than for the average cichlid, because this is a strongly acidic, soft blackwater fish. The facts box gives 73–81 °F, pH 4.5–5.5, and very low hardness — the morichal-typical parameters cited in hobby accounts, consistent with what is known of the Río San Juan drainage of Estado Monagas. Soft, lightly tinted water from peat filtration or a handful of leaves is strongly preferable to hard alkaline tapwater. The fish will not die outright in neutral water, but conditioning it to breed — which for an Apistogramma leans heavily on water-chemistry cues — is far less likely at pH 7 and moderate hardness.
Tankmates: keep them calm, small, and fast enough to stay out of the way. A school of small South American characins — pencilfish such as Nannostomus marginatus, or small Hemigrammus or Moenkhausia species — makes good dither, easing the cichlids' wariness without competing for territory or food. Avoid anything large enough to swallow a female, anything that sifts the bottom aggressively (other dwarf cichlids, small Geophagus), or anything that squabbles with the male at the surface. Corydoras pygmaeus or Corydoras hastatus can complement the bottom, though the usual armored-catfish caveats apply in very soft acid water. If breeding is the goal, keep the species alone in the display.
Feeding and difficulty: like all small Apistogramma, nororientalis should thrive on a varied micro-predator diet — daily live or frozen Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Cyclops, and bloodworm, with a quality micro-pellet as the dry component; gut-loaded live foods are valuable during conditioning. On difficulty it sits in the moderate-to-challenging bracket by default: the very soft, acidic water rules out casual community setups, imported fish often carry parasites after a long collection chain, and the absence of an established keeper base means no community knowledge to fall back on. Experienced Apistogramma keepers who have worked with other soft-water blackwater species — Apistogramma elizabethae, Apistogramma pertensis, Apistogramma iniridae — will find the approach familiar; beginners should gain experience with hardier congeners first.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma nororientalis as Least Concern (assessed by Lina Mesa-Salazar; published 31 July 2020). As with many narrowly distributed Orinoco dwarf cichlids, the listing reflects an absence of evidence of decline rather than detailed population data: the species is range-restricted to northeastern Venezuela but is not known to face an imminent, species-specific threat. The broad pressures on its morichal habitat are the region's usual ones — deforestation, agricultural and oil-industry activity in eastern Venezuela, and the degradation of palm-swamp creeks — none of which is documented as currently threatening this particular species. It carries no CITES or CMS listing.
