Taxonomy & naming
Roeboides araguaito was described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 2003, in a revision of the Roeboides microlepis species group published in Iheringia, Série Zoológica (September 2003). The type locality lies within the Orinoco basin of Venezuela. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) treats Roeboides araguaito Lucena, 2003 as the valid name; the authority is not parenthesised because the species was described in Roeboides, where it remains.
The species belongs to the Roeboides microlepis group, a cluster of closely related South American scale-eating characins. Within this group Lucena identified R. araguaito as sister to R. myersii, the two species distinguished by meristic and morphological characters described in the original revision. Roeboides itself belongs to the subfamily Characinae (family Characidae) and is one of roughly 22 valid species in the genus distributed across Central and South America, all sharing the genus' hallmark lepidophagous feeding specialisation.
Morphology
Like all members of Roeboides, R. araguaito is a laterally compressed, somewhat deep-bodied small characin. The genus is immediately distinguished from most other characids by its dentition: the premaxillary and dentary teeth project outward and forward beyond the closed mouth, forming a basket-like arrangement that allows the fish to strike laterally against the flanks of prey fish and scrape away scales without fatally injuring them. This exodont dentition gives resting Roeboides a distinctive gap-toothed, slightly underbite profile visible even at small sizes.
Detailed meristic data for R. araguaito specifically are confined to Lucena's original description, and size data for this species are sparse in secondary sources. Members of the broader Roeboides microlepis group are generally small to medium characins; the genus as a whole reaches roughly 2–4 in total length across species. The body is silvery with a lateral stripe of variable intensity, and the fins are largely unpigmented or lightly pigmented — a camouflage well suited to the midwater ambush approach the fish uses when attacking prey.
Habitat
Roeboides araguaito is known from the Orinoco Delta and Coastal Drainages freshwater ecoregion of Venezuela, placing it among the lowland drainages of northeastern South America. Across the Roeboides genus, habitat preferences are consistently described as lowland and slow-moving: sluggish streams, backwater channels, floodplain pools, lake margins, and flooded forest edges — all habitats with an abundant supply of resident prey fish.
The species is a creature of standing or very slow water rather than swift rivers, consistent with the crepuscular or low-light ambush approach that Roeboides lepidophages are thought to employ. Water conditions in these lowland Orinoco-associated habitats tend toward warm, slightly soft to moderately hard, and circumneutral to mildly acidic. Specific physicochemical data for R. araguaito's precise collection localities have not been widely reported outside the original description.
Feeding
Roeboides araguaito is lepidophagous — a scale-eater — sharing the functional feeding morphology and ecology of all well-studied members of its genus. The exodont dentition allows the fish to approach prey fish from the side or rear, deliver a rapid lateral strike, and detach scales, which are then consumed. Because prey are not killed, this feeding mode allows a single prey individual to be revisited multiple times, and scales regrow in surviving fish.
Studies on congeners, including Venezuelan species such as R. dayi, show that lepidophagy in Roeboides is ontogenetic and partly facultative: smaller juveniles consume aquatic insect larvae and microcrustaceans as primary prey, shifting toward scale-eating as they grow and as the exodont dentition develops fully. Larger adults also supplement the scale diet with invertebrate prey opportunistically, making the genus better described as scale-specialist omnivores rather than obligate lepidophages. This feeding flexibility likely contributes to the genus' success across diverse lowland habitats.
Mating
No species-specific reproductive behaviour has been reported for Roeboides araguaito in the primary literature available to date. Inferences from the genus and from related Characinae suggest that Roeboides species are egg-scatterers with no parental care, spawning adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged debris in the shallows of their floodplain habitats.
Seasonal flooding in the Orinoco system drives reproductive timing in many lowland characins, and Roeboides species in Venezuela are likely to spawn during the rising-water phase when floodplain habitats expand and food availability increases. Males may show mild size-based or behavioural competition for access to females, but elaborate courtship displays have not been documented for the genus. Data sparse.
Breeding
Roeboides araguaito has not been reported as successfully bred in captivity in sources available to date. General Roeboides biology suggests open egg-scattering spawning with adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or submerged vegetation, with no parental care and a short incubation period at tropical temperatures. Adults would be expected to consume eggs and fry in the absence of separation.
The specialised diet of adult Roeboides — requiring live fish from which to rasp scales, or a suitable substitute — presents a significant practical challenge for breeding projects, and the genus as a whole remains largely unstudied in aquarium conditions. Data sparse.
In the aquarium
Roeboides araguaito is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and would represent a specialist undertaking even for experienced keepers of unusual characins. The primary challenge is diet: adult Roeboides are scale-eaters, and while juveniles can be raised on insect larvae and small live foods, adults require either regular feeder fish from which to take scales, or patient adaptation to alternative protein sources — an approach that has met with limited success in the wider genus.
Should specimens become available, a spacious, low-light aquarium with ample cover, gentle flow, and soft to moderately hard warm water (mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, pH 6.5–7.5) would approximate their natural lowland Orinoco habitat. Tankmates would need careful selection: other fish will be targeted for scale removal, which causes stress and fin damage in companions. Keeping Roeboides with robust species of similar or larger size, or in species-only groups, would limit harm to tankmates. This is not a community fish in the conventional sense.
Conservation
Roeboides araguaito has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List. The species' restricted distribution within the Orinoco Delta and Coastal Drainages ecoregion of Venezuela is a factor worth noting, as lowland Orinoco habitats face pressures from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and hydrological modification. However, in the absence of a formal assessment, population trends and specific threats remain unquantified.
The Roeboides microlepis group as a whole spans several South American drainage systems, and the broader genus does not appear to be in immediate jeopardy range-wide. R. araguaito's restricted geographic footprint and its apparent endemism to a single ecoregion warrant monitoring as land-use change continues in northeastern Venezuela, but no conservation actions specific to this species have been documented.
