Taxonomy & naming
Sven O. Kullander described Apistogramma macmasteri in 1979, in a Zoologica Scripta paper (vol. 8, no. 1, pp. 69–79) that named four new Orinoco dwarfs at once — this fish alongside Apistogramma viejita, Apistogramma hongsloi and Apistogramma iniridae. The holotype (NRM 11240) is held in the Swedish Museum of Natural History, with paratypes divided between that collection, the American Museum of Natural History and the Field Museum. Its type locality is a stream at the foot of the Cordillera — Finca La Ponderosa, on the road to Restrepo near Villavicencio, in the department of Meta, Colombia (4°15′N, 73°35′W). The epithet honours Mark McMaster, an American aquarist and dwarf-cichlid enthusiast who brought the fish to Kullander's attention; the genus name pairs Greek apisto (uncertain) with gramma (line or mark), for the inconstant banding and broken lateral line that make Apistogramma — one of the largest cichlid genera, with well over a hundred described species — so hard to pin down.
Within that genus, macmasteri anchors the "macmasteri species group," a cluster of deep-bodied, red-finned Colombian and Venezuelan dwarfs that also takes in Apistogramma hoignei, Apistogramma hongsloi and Apistogramma alacrina, treated together in Mesa and Lasso's revision of Orinoco Apistogramma (2011, 2013). The group has caused lasting confusion in the hobby: "viejita" and "macmasteri" have been swapped on tank labels for decades, and as Oliver Lucanus notes in Cichlid News (2014), many of the intensely red "viejita" sold today are line-bred fish almost certainly crossed with macmasteri at some point to deepen the red — the two are strikingly alike, and their ranges overlap in the northeastern Llanos. Two field marks separate them: male Apistogramma viejita carry a much smaller black spot on the caudal peduncle than true macmasteri, and Seriously Fish points to the dark band along the upper dorsal edge that Apistogramma viejita shows and macmasteri lacks. Beyond "Macmaster's dwarf cichlid" and the Spanish apistograma colaroja, the fish is mostly traded simply as "macmasteri."
Morphology
This is a true dwarf cichlid: laterally compressed, with the classic apisto profile and a small, slightly downturned mouth built for picking food off the substrate. Reported sizes vary enough to be worth spelling out. Kullander's checklist treatment gives a maximum of about 2 in standard length for males and 2 in for females, with total length to roughly 3 in; the IUCN account, following Mesa and Lasso, likewise states the species "does not exceed 2.5 in standard length." Long-term breeders on apistogramma.com push back on the low end — they report wild and well-grown males commonly reaching 2.5–3 in total length and females around 2.5 in, which makes macmasteri one of the larger Apistogramma rather than a true miniature. The honest summary: published maxima sit near 2–2.5 in SL, but robust aquarium males look noticeably bigger than that figure suggests.
Males are the showpiece — a silvery-blue to golden-olive base scattered with iridescent blue-green scaling, a dark lateral band from snout to tail, and, diagnostically, a bold red to red-orange wash across the caudal fin and the rear of the tall, pointed dorsal. Mature fish often develop lyrate tail extensions, and the vertical bars flare or fade with mood. Females are plainer but distinctive in their own right: warm yellow that intensifies in breeding dress, a subdued lateral stripe, rounded fins, and the dark pectoral/chest blotch typical of the species group. The sexes separate clearly once fish reach about 1.5 in — males larger, with extended finnage and red fin colour; females smaller and rounder. One caution bears repeating: the dramatic "double red" and "super red" finnage seen in shops is the product of selective line breeding, not wild colouration. Wild macmasteri are handsome but more restrained, and the wild form is the more elegant fish.
Habitat
Despite being shelved under "Amazon" dwarf cichlids in the trade, Apistogramma macmasteri is an Orinoco-basin fish, endemic to Colombia — Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records it as an upper Meta River drainage endemic. Its range follows the Andean piedmont (piedemonte) of the eastern Colombian llanos: per the IUCN assessment, drawing on Mesa and Lasso's revision, it runs from the Ariari River (upper Guaviare) in the south northward into the upper Meta drainage via the Orotoy, Guayuriba, Guatiquía, Upía, Cusiana and Pauto rivers on the Andean side, and the Yucao and Manacacías from the high plain (altillanura).
It lives in small streams and creeks rather than open river, often where they spill from the eastern Cordillera into the savanna. Lucanus (Cichlid News, 2014) notes that near the Andes these waters run cooler than out in the Llanos, and that macmasteri shares them with Corydoras, Astyanax tetras, Ancistrus catfish and even Andinoacara cichlids. The IUCN account, citing Mesa and Lasso (2011), describes clear-water streams over pebble beds with intermediate-to-acidic pH around 5.0–5.7 and strikingly low conductivity of 3.7–5.9 µS/cm — extremely soft, mineral-poor water. FishBase summarises the preferred envelope as pH 6.0–6.5, hardness 2–4 °dH and 73–86 °F. Hobbyist field reports add the texture the limnology leaves out: shaded, structure-rich habitats of fallen leaves, submerged roots, rounded rocks furred with algae and aufwuchs, and overhanging bank vegetation — frequently tea-stained amber rather than crystal-clear or true blackwater, with few rooted aquatic plants. It is, in short, a clear-to-tannin-stained foothill specialist, not a whitewater river fish. No depth band is published; these are shallow streams and creeks, on the order of a metre or less, and FishBase classes the species as benthopelagic.
Feeding
Apistogramma macmasteri is a micro-predator. Colombian field work (Galvis et al. 2007), cited in the IUCN assessment, classes it as carnivorous, and both FishBase's estimated trophic level (about 3.3) and decades of hobbyist observation agree: it feeds chiefly on small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and other tiny prey — gleaned from the substrate and leaf litter. The small, slightly downturned mouth and the habit of taking and sifting mouthfuls of fine sediment fit that benthic-foraging niche, and keepers consistently find the fish in best condition on live and frozen invertebrate foods.
As a small, cryptic, cover-hugging fish, macmasteri sits in the middle of its stream food web — a consumer of invertebrates and, in turn, prey for larger fish and birds. Its tie to leaf litter and root tangles is ecological, not incidental: that structure is both its larder and its refuge, which is part of why deforestation and channel disturbance bear directly on the species (see Conservation). No detailed diet studies specific to macmasteri have been published, so the finer points of its trophic ecology remain open — the IUCN assessors themselves flag life-history and ecology as needing research.
Mating
Outside of breeding macmasteri is a loosely social fish, but reproduction reorganises a group around female-held nest sites. Like most Apistogramma it is, in the words of long-time keeper and forum moderator Mike Wise, best described as "casually polygamous": a single male will breed with several females where space and broken sightlines let him hold a larger territory overlapping their smaller ones, though he does fine paired one-to-one as well. The female chooses and defends the cavity; the male patrols the surrounding ground and courts ripe females with lateral displays and flared, reddened fins.
The hard-won lesson from breeders is how aggressive the brooding female becomes. She will drive off fish many times her size, and in a too-small or under-decorated tank she frequently turns on her own mate — keepers on apistogramma.com and other forums repeatedly describe pair-only setups in which the female harassed or killed the male (or, less often, the reverse) once spawning began. That is why experienced breeders give each fish abundant broken sightlines and, in tight quarters, pull the male after spawning. These robust, comparatively large males need real territory; Lucanus notes that in mixed setups females should have small, hollow refuges the bigger males cannot follow them into. This mix of female-led territoriality and unpredictable aggression is a large part of why the fish is rewarding, but not effortless, to breed.
Breeding
Apistogramma macmasteri is a substrate-brooding cave spawner with maternal care. The female selects and defends a cavity — a rock crevice or root hollow in the wild, a coconut shell, clay cave or upturned flowerpot in captivity — and deposits a tightly packed clutch of roughly 60–120 reddish, adhesive eggs on the cave ceiling (FishBase gives the 60–120 figure). She tends and fans the eggs, guards the wrigglers, then leads the free-swimming fry through the leaf litter in a tight school, signalling with twitches and fin flicks, while the male holds the larger surrounding territory. Several keepers also describe the male taking over fry-rearing if the female falters — anecdotal, but reported often enough to take seriously.
Spawning is driven by soft, warm, scrupulously clean water and a rich live-food conditioning diet; the eggs hatch in a few days and the fry are free-swimming within about a week, after which they take baby brine shrimp and microworm readily. Brood survival is fragile early on: first-time pairs commonly lose an entire clutch within days, and active tankmates such as Corydoras and tetras readily disturb broods or pick off fry, so committed breeders move the female and cave to a quiet species tank. As with other dwarf cichlids in warm soft water, macmasteri broods can skew heavily female or male with temperature — something keepers exploit, or fight, when chasing balanced spawns. Once a pair settles and the parents gain experience, the species spawns willingly and the fry are not difficult to grow on, which is exactly why it has stayed a hobby staple for decades.
In the aquarium
Widely available and reliably captive-bred, macmasteri is among the more forgiving soft-water dwarfs — but it is still not a beginner's fish, and the floor of the tank matters more than the total volume.
Tank: a single pair needs a footprint of at least 15 US gal (roughly 80 × 14 in of floor); a one-male, two-female trio wants 25–30 US gal with real visual breaks between territories. Give it fine, dark sand rather than gravel — these fish sift the bottom for food and read a soft floor by touch and sight — then layer leaf litter, pack in bogwood and root tangles, and set at least one cave per female (coconut halves, small clay pots or ceramic caves all work). Dark, broken décor calms the fish and draws out natural behaviour; a bare, brightly lit tank yields washed-out colour, constant hiding and poor breeding.
Water: the published envelope is pH 5.0–6.5, hardness under 4 °dH and 73–86 °F. In practice, soft acidic water — RO or rainwater cut with a little well-mineralised tap, pH 6.0–6.5, 2–3 °dH, around 79–82 °F — gives healthy colour and reliable spawning. Hard, alkaline tap water rarely kills outright, especially the domesticated ornamental strains, but it suppresses breeding, dulls colour and grinds the fish down over time. Peat filtration or a few dried Indian almond leaves add the tannins and gentle acidity of the foothill streams the fish comes from.
Tankmates: choose small, peaceful mid-water shoalers that can neither eat fry nor threaten a brooding female — pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.), small Hyphessobrycon or Moenkhausia tetras, Corydoras and otocinclus all work as dithers that coax the apistos into the open. Pull the Corydoras from a breeding tank, though, since they eat eggs; avoid fin-nippers, which target a male's long finnage; and do not mix macmasteri with other Apistogramma unless the tank exceeds 40 US gal, because cross-species aggression and hybridisation are both real risks.
Common mistakes: a harem of one male with two or three females is the most natural arrangement and spreads the female aggression described under Mating across separate nests. A simple pair works only if the tank is long enough (about 35.5 in) or decorated enough for the male to escape, or if he is removed after spawning and returned once the fry swim. On difficulty macmasteri sits mid-genus — easier than the blackwater specialists, harder to breed well than the alkaline-tolerant agassizii or cacatuoides. The classic failure is getting space and décor right but ignoring water chemistry; the second is pairing fish in too small a volume with nowhere to hide.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma macmasteri as Near Threatened (Mesa-Salazar 2022; assessed 3 August 2020, reviewed by D. C. Taphorn; criterion B2ab(iii,v)). The species has a restricted area of occupancy of about 1,606 mi² (within an extent of occurrence near 38,83 mi²) and a declining population trend; it met the area threshold for Vulnerable, but the number of threat-based locations — greater than ten — pulled the final category back to Near Threatened. The principal pressures are habitat degradation across the Colombian piedmont: conversion of streamside land to African oil palm, rice and other crops, extensive cattle ranching, oil and gas development, and agricultural effluent, compounded by direct collection for the ornamental-fish trade, in which macmasteri is a species of international commercial importance (Galvis et al. 2007; Ortega-Lara et al. 2015). It occurs in no formal protected area, and the assessors explicitly call for research on its population ecology and its interaction with these threats.
That puts macmasteri among the more strained members of its wider fauna rather than the comfortable majority. Most Neotropical cichlids catalogued in Kullander's contribution to the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (Reis, Kullander & Ferraris, eds., 2003) are Least Concern or Not Evaluated; the honest framing here is narrower. This is a small-range, soft clear-water foothill specialist whose habitat sits squarely inside one of Colombia's most heavily transformed agricultural and hydrocarbon-producing landscapes — a region the Humboldt Institute's basin assessments rate as under "very high pressure" from human activity — so the generic Orinoco-piedmont pressures of deforestation, sedimentation and water-quality decline fall on it harder than on widespread lowland species. There is a real upside: macmasteri breeds readily in captivity, which both relieves some pressure on wild collection and keeps the species secure in the hobby even as its native streams change. The withdrawal of exporters from the Villavicencio road during Colombia's long internal conflict, noted by Lucanus, is a reminder that trade availability and wild-collection pressure on this fish have always tracked events on the ground as much as the biology.
