Taxonomy & naming
Wolfgang Staeck, the German cichlid specialist, described Apistogramma norberti in 1991 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (2(2): 139–149), with a German text, an English summary, and colour photographs of both live fish and the preserved holotype. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes accepts the name as valid. The holotype is held at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin (ZMB 32002), with paratypes divided among the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM 13330, four specimens), Berlin (ZMB 32003, eleven), and the Bavarian State Collection in Munich (ZSM 27974, two). The type locality is a forest brook of the Quebrada Nuevo Horizonte, in the Río Tahuayo basin, at roughly 4°05'S, 73°05'W in Peru's Loreto Department.
The genus name pairs the Greek apisto (uncertain) with gramma (line or marking) — a nod to the variable, hard-to-read lateral patterning that makes Apistogramma such a difficult genus to identify. The epithet honours Norbert Wiesheu, the aquarist who first brought the fish into the hobby and, as Staeck recorded, went to real trouble to pin down where it came from. Before the description it moved through the trade as Apistogramma sp. "Großmaul" (big-mouth), and it still carries the DATZ catalogue code A190.
Where it belongs inside the genus is genuinely unsettled. Most authors file it tentatively in the Apistogramma cacatuoides group, the cockatoo complex, yet it also shows features of the Apistogramma nijsseni group; Seriously Fish and the field collector Tom Christoffersen both treat its position as unresolved, and Christoffersen lists it under its own Apistogramma norberti group. The genus sits in the subfamily Cichlinae (Geophaginae in older usage), one of the richest lineages of Neotropical cichlids: Kullander's 1998 morphological work placed Apistogramma in the eartheater tribe Geophagini, and later molecular analysis (López-Fernández et al. 2005) recovered it within a well-supported Satanoperca clade alongside Apistogrammoides and Taeniacara.
Morphology
Apistogramma norberti is small even by dwarf-cichlid standards. The original material and Kullander's 2003 checklist give a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length for males and roughly 1 in for females; aquarium references such as Seriously Fish quote larger figures — up to 2.5 in for males and 1.5 in for females — probably reflecting well-fed captive fish. Either way, a male runs to about 2–2.5 in (2–2.5 in) overall, with distinctly smaller, plainer females, on the genus-typical fusiform and slightly compressed body.
Males are the showpiece. The body is predominantly blue, often shading to turquoise on the flanks and gill covers, edged with red or orange on the unpaired fins and, in prime wild fish, washed with red around the lips. The single most reliable field mark is a blackish blotch in the soft, rear part of the dorsal fin, set against a rounded caudal fin — a pairing that FishBase, Aquarium Glaser, and Staeck's own description agree occurs in no other male Apistogramma. Mature males also show three zigzag lines along the belly. Oddly, some males from the nearby Río Tamshiyacu population lack the diagnostic dorsal blotch — a reminder of how plastic this genus can be. Females are the usual muted yellow-brown, turning an intense yellow with bold black markings when they are brooding.
Habitat
This is a narrowly distributed fish. Eschmeyer's catalog and FishBase record it from the Tahuayo River drainage of the upper Amazon basin in Peru, and the IUCN assessment treats it as essentially known only from its type locality. Field collectors — above all the Norwegian aquarist Tom Christoffersen, who took it in 2011 and 2012 — have since found it in the neighbouring Río Tamshiyacu drainage as well. Both are small tributaries that enter the Amazon just south of Iquitos in Loreto, near where the Ucayali and Marañón meet, and the whole range lies at only about 328 ft elevation despite its distance from the sea.
The biotope is a shaded jungle stream just 3–7 ft wide — the kind that swells in the rains and shrinks to remnant pools in the dry season. Staeck collected the types at low water, in transparent, yellowish water over a bed of fallen leaves and dead wood, with the fish tucked into the leaf litter. His in-situ readings are striking: around midday, pH near 5.9, hardness under 1°dGH, carbonate hardness about 2°KH, conductivity near 10 µS/cm, and a temperature of about 75 °F (75°F). Christoffersen later measured the water softer and more acidic still — pH 4.74, conductivity of just 7 µS/cm, 78 °F. This is essentially ion-poor blackwater to clearwater forest-stream habitat; the IUCN's habitat note — slow-flowing black waters with forest along the banks — fits, though the transparency Staeck saw at low water reads closer to a tannin-stained clearwater brook than a true Rio Negro blackwater. FishBase lists the species as benthopelagic and recommends pH 5.8–6.8, hardness 0–4°dH, and temperatures from 75 °F upward.
Feeding
Like most of its genus, Apistogramma norberti is a micro-predator of the leaf-litter zone — a small benthic carnivore that picks aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and tiny crustaceans from among submerged leaves and detritus. Seriously Fish describes it as primarily carnivorous, feeding mostly on benthic invertebrates in the wild, and FishBase puts its trophic level at about 3.3, in line with an invertebrate feeder rather than a herbivore or omnivore.
The carotenoid content of that natural diet is almost certainly what produces the vivid red lips and fin colour of freshly imported wild males. Keepers who collected at the type locality noted carotenoid-rich crustaceans such as Macrobrachium prawns in the same streams, and the consensus among experienced aquarists is that the colour fades in captivity because the aquarium diet is poorer in those pigments — not because the fish are unwell. In its stream community the species fills the same modest niche as countless other small Amazonian fishes: a consumer of the invertebrate life the decaying leaf-pack supports, and itself food for larger cichlids, characins, and birds.
Mating
In the right setup Apistogramma norberti keeps a harem: a single male over several females, each holding her own small territory, with parental care led by the females — the standard Apistogramma arrangement. When a female comes into condition she courts the male relentlessly. One keeper recorded a full 24 hours of vigorous flank-display and tail-beating before the male responded, then watched two more females repeat the performance in turn as they ripened.
The female chooses and prepares the spawning cavity herself — a crevice, a coconut shell, a flowerpot, or a hollow under wood — and keepers describe her packing sand to narrow the entrance until only she can pass, spitting mouthful after mouthful onto a growing pile at the cave mouth. Once she has a brood she turns bright yellow with black markings and becomes fiercely defensive; in a small tank she may drive the male off so hard that he has to be removed for his own safety, as Seriously Fish warns. Despite an old reputation for shyness, keepers report that wild fish grow bold quickly once they have cover they trust, even rising to the surface at feeding time. Away from breeding it is not especially aggressive toward unrelated tankmates.
Breeding
Apistogramma norberti is a cave-spawning substrate brooder. The female fixes her eggs to the ceiling of the chosen cavity and takes sole charge of guarding and fanning both eggs and larvae, while the male patrols the wider territory; FishBase confirms the eggs are attached to the cave ceiling and tended by the female. No clutch count has been published for this species — congeneric dwarf cichlids of similar size typically lay on the order of 40–80 eggs, a genus-typical figure rather than a measured one, and the original description gives none. Keepers report that the fry become free-swimming and are led out of the cave under the female's guard, ducking back inside at any threat.
In the aquarium it spawns readily once its water demands are met. Christoffersen reports that it breeds quite easily in very soft water at a pH around 5, and forum accounts describe successful spawnings in coconut-shell caves within community tanks. The proven method mirrors the wild cycle: one male with several females, plenty of small caves, very soft and acidic water, frequent water changes to keep conditions pristine, and a rich, varied live diet to bring the females into condition. Parental care is fairly brief, as across the genus, and once the fry are free-swimming they grow on without much difficulty on microfoods and newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Genuinely uncommon in the hobby, Apistogramma norberti reaches aquarists mainly as small specialty imports — sold as "Norberti Peruvian Wild – Tahuayo River" — or as tank-bred fish from breeders who have cracked its chemistry. Almost every failure traces to one thing: water that is too hard.
Water: this fish came from pH 4.7–5.9 water with conductivity under 10 µS/cm and no measurable hardness. Aim for pH 5.5–6.8 and hardness below 4°dH, using RO or rain water softened and acidified with tannin sources — leaves, alder cones, peat. Temperature is more forgiving at 75–82 °F, the low end favouring natural behaviour and the high end sometimes used to trigger spawning. In hard tap water the colour fades and breeding stops even where other dwarf cichlids cope, so RO water is effectively non-negotiable — yet the fish still insists on clean, well-oxygenated conditions.
Tank: a single pair suits a planted 60-litre (15-US-gallon) tank, but the natural harem of one male to two to four females does better in 20–30 US gal, where each female can hold her own territory. Footprint beats height. Lay a centimetre or two of fine sand — the females pack it at cave mouths — scatter dried leaves (Indian almond, oak, beech) over part of the floor, and provide several separate caves from split coconut shells, terracotta pots, or stacked slate so females do not fight over one.
Tankmates: small dither fish help a lot. A shoal of rummy-nose tetra (Hemigrammus rhodostomus), ember tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae), or a soft-water pencilfish coaxes the cichlids into the open; avoid boisterous, fast feeders that outcompete them. Corydoras from soft-water Peruvian or Colombian drainages make good bottom companions. Do not mix in other Apistogramma unless the tank is big enough to give each pair its own zone, and never keep two males together in a small tank. A varied diet of live or frozen daphnia, cyclops, small bloodworm, and micro-crustaceans keeps them fit, with a little Macrobrachium shrimp or krill to help males hold their red.
Common mistakes: hard or alkaline water first, then too few caves for the number of females, then overfeeding without matching water changes. Sexing is easy once they settle — larger blue males against smaller brown females that flush golden-yellow when they spawn. For a keeper willing to run RO water this is a rewarding, striking fish; for anyone unwilling, it is the wrong choice.
Conservation
On the IUCN Red List, Apistogramma norberti is listed as Data Deficient (assessed 25 April 2014, published 2016; assessor Hernán Ortega Torres). The reasoning is simple: the species was known essentially only from its type locality, with nothing on population size or trend, so no threat category could be assigned. The assessment records no known major threats, notes that the fish occurs in no protected area, and flags only that it "can be potentially used in the ornamental trade." That trade is real but small — the species arrives as a specialty wild-caught and tank-bred import rather than a bulk commodity.
The species-level blank sits inside a much larger and better-studied picture. The Peruvian Amazon around Iquitos and the lower Tahuayo is one of the world's major source regions for ornamental fish, an export fishery centred on Loreto that supports thousands of rural collectors (Moreau & Coomes and others have documented the western-Amazonian aquarium fishery and its conservation issues). For most small Amazonian cichlids the danger is not overfishing but habitat change — deforestation along the very forest streams they depend on, sedimentation, and the warming and hydrological shifts now reshaping the basin. Encouragingly, part of the known range lies within the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area. The honest summary is the one the data support: Apistogramma norberti is not known to be declining, but it is a narrow-range, single-watershed specialist tied to soft-water forest brooks, and that combination — not its current Red List category — is what would leave it exposed if its small Loreto habitat were degraded. It remains, as the IUCN puts it, a species deserving further research rather than alarm.
