Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma pulchra was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1980, in his monograph "A taxonomical study of the genus Apistogramma Regan, with a revision of Brazilian and Peruvian species" (Bonner Zoologische Monographien No. 14). The type locality, given precisely in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is the Rio Preto, an affluent of the Rio Candeias in the Madeira drainage about 16 mi from Porto Velho in Rondônia, Brazil (8°46'S, 63°45'W). The holotype (IRSNB 584) and most paratypes are held at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels, with a few paratypes split off to the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP); the material traces back to a 1960s Belgian expedition to the region.
The species epithet is the Latin pulchra, "handsome" or "beautiful." Kullander coined it, in his own words, for the fish's "carefully blended colour pattern and the slender body shape." The genus name Apistogramma, erected by Regan in 1913, joins Greek apistos (inconstant, uncertain) and gramme (line), an allusion Regan never fully explained but which is generally read as a nod to the variably developed, often incomplete lateral lines that run through these dwarf cichlids.
Within the genus, Apistogramma pulchra anchors the "pulchra-complex," one of two complexes inside the larger Apistogramma agassizii group. As the Apistogramma specialist Mike Wise lays out, that complex shows a roughly north-south distribution along the Rio Negro and Rio Madeira systems and probably represents the more ancestral forms of the species-group. The boundaries here are genuinely fuzzy: experienced aquarists treat a string of trade and provisional labels, including Apistogramma cf. pulchra "Aripuanã," Apistogramma cf. pulchra "Chingarno," "New Chingarno," and Apistogramma sp. "Mikschofsky," as populations or colour morphs of Apistogramma pulchra itself, while related but distinct forms such as Apistogramma sp. "Branco" and Apistogramma sp. "Abacaxis" hover nearby. The IUCN itself flags the species outright as a possible species complex, and that caveat should travel with any statement made about it.
Morphology
This is a small fish even by dwarf-cichlid standards. FishBase lists a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length; aquarium accounts put mature males at roughly 2 in total length, with females considerably smaller at about 1 in. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: breeding males are the colourful sex, with extended fin filaments and the larger body, while females are smaller and plainer with rounded fins, turning a bright yellow with bold black markings when guarding a brood.
The most useful field mark separating the pulchra-complex from the closely allied agassizii-complex is the tail. Where Apistogramma agassizii and its relatives develop a spade- or lance-shaped caudal with elongated middle rays, Apistogramma pulchra keeps a rounded caudal and a slightly narrower lateral band, features that read as the more 'primitive' or ancestral pattern within the group. The caudal coloration is notably variable even within the type population: the holotype shows regular cross-striping across the whole fin with a dark outer margin, while some paratypes from the same locality show cross-stripes only in the centre of the tail set against a broad red-to-orange margin. That variability is exactly why pinning a single specimen to species can be so hard, and why so much of what reaches the trade as "pulchra" is identified only tentatively.
Habitat
Apistogramma pulchra is a Brazilian endemic of the Amazon basin. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes restrict it to the Madeira River drainage, while the IUCN assessment extends the accepted range to the Rio Branco drainage and surrounding areas, spanning the states of Amazonas, Roraima, and Rondônia, with an estimated extent of occurrence of roughly 810,0 mi². The pulchra-complex as a whole shows a north-south distribution along the Negro and Madeira systems, which is part of why forms from far-apart rivers can look so similar.
Like most Apistogramma, it is a fish of the margins rather than the main channel: slow tributaries, backwaters, creeks, and flooded forest where fallen leaves collect on the bottom. The IUCN classifies its habitat simply as permanent inland streams and creeks. These waters span the Amazon's three classic types, blackwater, clearwater, and whitewater, depending on locality and season, but the conditions reported for Apistogramma leaf-litter biotopes are consistently soft and acidic, broadly pH 5.5 to 6 and very low in hardness, over a substrate of leaf litter and submerged wood on sand. No depth study exists for the species; in practice these are shallow-margin fish of water typically well under a metre deep, and the depth figures here are habitat-typical rather than measured (FLAGGED). Reported temperatures for the genus in habitat and in culture run roughly 77–86 °F.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study exists for Apistogramma pulchra specifically, so its trophic role is inferred from close relatives and from the genus as a whole, where the pattern is consistent. Apistogramma are micropredators: they sift and pick small benthic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other tiny prey from the leaf litter and soft sediment of their creeks. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.2, squarely in the small-carnivore band, and field accounts of the genus describe omnivores with a strong carnivorous lean.
The leaf-litter layer they hunt in is itself the engine of the habitat: decaying leaves seed colonies of microbes, microfauna, and biofilm that feed the invertebrates the cichlids eat, and that same litter shelters fry. In the community, a fish this size is both predator and prey, sharing the shallows with tetras, pencilfish, small Corydoras, and loricariid catfishes, and keeping to cover where larger cichlids and predatory catfish patrol.
Mating
Socially, these are territorial little fish, typically living and kept as pairs or small harems. They are described as slightly to moderately aggressive: not bullies on a community scale, but sharply defensive of a chosen cave or patch of bottom, especially against conspecifics and similar-looking forms. As is the rule across the genus, the female is the centre of gravity in breeding. When she ripens she colours up, selects and prepares a cavity, and courts a male to it; the larger male holds and patrols the wider territory while courtship plays out at the cave.
The practical spawning triggers are the genus-typical ones: soft, warm, acidic water, the presence of suitable caves, and a rich diet of small live and frozen foods. The very low pH values that some wild Apistogramma populations need to spawn underline just how blackwater-adapted these fish can be, and pulchra, drawn from soft Madeira-system creeks, is no exception.
Breeding
Apistogramma pulchra is a cave-spawning substrate brooder with female-dominated parental care, the standard reproductive mode for the genus. Eggs are attached to the ceiling of a cave, a crevice among wood or leaf litter in the wild, and a flowerpot, coconut shell, or rock cavity in the aquarium. The female then tends the eggs and shepherds the larvae and free-swimming fry, colouring up dramatically into her yellow-and-black brooding dress and driving off the larger male and anything else that approaches; the male's role narrows to guarding the territory's outer boundary.
No wild clutch count is published for pulchra specifically; dwarf-cichlid spawns in this size class typically run from a few dozen up to roughly a hundred or so eggs (genus-typical figure, FLAGGED), with the small female limiting brood size. FishBase rates the species' resilience as medium, assuming fecundity under 1,000. The fish is occasionally bred by hobbyists, enough to appear in club Breeders Award programs such as the Greater Chicago Cichlid Association's, but it is not a beginner-proof producer: success rests on clean, soft, acidic water, a settled pair, and undisturbed cover.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma pulchra is rarely kept compared to its more widely traded relatives such as Apistogramma agassizii or Apistogramma cacatuoides. It turns up occasionally from specialist South American importers and in the hands of dwarf-cichlid clubs, but it is not a fish a newcomer is likely to encounter at a chain retailer. Anyone who does obtain it should treat the published range data as a caution: a substantial portion of what is sold under the name "pulchra" likely represents undescribed forms or close relatives from the pulchra-complex, and the tank histories in club literature reflect that ambiguity. That uncertainty is not a reason to avoid the fish, but it argues for keeping notes on provenance and not mixing animals from different source localities.
For a single pair or a harem of one male with two or three females, a tank of 15–20 US gal (roughly 60 × 12 in footprint) is a workable minimum; a longer tank of 20–25 US gal gives the male room to hold a proper territory without constantly harassing the females. The substrate should be fine sand, not gravel: these are fish that sift the bottom and rest close to it, and coarse substrate stresses them. Dense leaf litter — dried catappa, beech, or oak leaves — is close to mandatory both as décor and as a functional microhabitat: it darkens the water slightly, softens any incidental pH swings, and gives females and juveniles places to disappear. Spawning caves are non-negotiable; coconut-shell halves, upturned small flowerpots with a notch cut in the rim, or snug passages under flat slate all work. Live plants and driftwood complete a setup that feels coherent to the fish.
Water chemistry must be taken seriously. These are blackwater creek fish; the facts column says pH 5.5–6.5, and experienced breeders of the pulchra-complex push closer to pH 5.5–6.0 for conditioning and spawning. Hardness should be very low — well under 5 °dH and ideally 1–3 °dH — which in practice means using reverse-osmosis water or genuine rainwater buffered with leaf litter or peat. Temperature can run 77–82 °F for general keeping; a mild rise toward 82–84 °F can serve as a spawning trigger. Standard Amazonian softwater Apistogramma chemistry applies here. This is not a fish to keep on hard tap water: it may survive, but spawning will be erratic and the female's brooding behaviour flat.
For tankmates, small Amazonian characins make the best dither fish: pencilfish (Nannostomus spp.), ember tetras, or similarly small, non-aggressive species. Their movement in the open middle water reassures a nervous Apistogramma and keeps both sexes from hugging the bottom defensively. Corydoras pygmaeus or Corydoras habrosus will occupy the bottom without threatening caves. What to avoid: other Apistogramma or similarly shaped dwarf cichlids sharing the same tank, any fish large enough to swallow a female, and aggressive or boisterous species that shred the tentative calm these fish need. A second male in anything under a very large, heavily broken-up tank is a recipe for a dead subordinate.
Sexing is reasonably straightforward by the time fish reach adult size. Males run roughly 2 in total length and develop extended filaments on the dorsal and caudal fins; females top out around 1 in and keep rounded fins throughout their lives. Both sexes show the species' characteristic rounded caudal, which is the most reliable way to rule out a misidentified agassizii-type in a mixed import. When a female is holding a brood she turns a vivid yellow with strong black patterning on the face and flank — a transformation that is hard to miss. Common keeper mistakes are predictable: water that is too hard or alkaline, a tank too small for the male to establish a territory without constant conflict with the female, and overfeeding combined with inadequate filtration, which sours water quality quickly in the warm, low-flow conditions these fish prefer. Feed small live or frozen foods — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, micro bloodworm — as the staple; dry food alone is a long-term welfare problem. Difficulty is best rated as intermediate: genus-typical cave-spawning behaviour is well understood, but the exacting water chemistry and low availability of quality stock put this species beyond the casual community-tank keeper.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma pulchra as Least Concern (assessed 29 October 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published in the 2025 update). The rationale is straightforward: despite little information on the species or its specific threats, it has a wide geographic range, so it does not meet the thresholds for a threatened category. The population trend is listed as unknown, and the assessment notes the fish does not appear to be especially common or abundant. It is harvested for the ornamental aquarium trade nationally and internationally, but that collection is not flagged as a population-level threat. An older Cichlid Room Companion species page predates the assessment and still lists the fish as not evaluated; the IUCN listing is the current status.
The honest framing is that the species itself looks secure while the basin it lives in is under real pressure. The IUCN explicitly names deforestation and damming in the Madeira drainage as the relevant background threats, with their effect on Apistogramma pulchra simply unknown. That is consistent with the wider picture for Amazonian fishes: most are Least Concern or Not Evaluated and face habitat change and trade collection rather than collapse. Kullander's own treatment of the group in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003) shows how patchily this fauna is still resolved: many forms in the pulchra-complex remain undescribed, which is its own conservation problem, since a fish that has not been formally named and mapped is hard to protect. The Madeira basin's large hydroelectric projects and ongoing land-use change are the pressures most likely to reshape the leaf-litter creek habitats this dwarf cichlid depends on, even as the species, for now, holds a Least Concern card.
