Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma resticulosa was described by Sven O. Kullander in 1980, in the Bulletin Zoölogisch Museum of the University of Amsterdam (volume 7, number 16, pages 157–162), from a type series of six specimens spanning 0.5–1 in standard length collected near Humaitá in Amazonas State, Brazil. The type locality is a small forest stream in the Rio Madeira system; the holotype and paratypes are held in the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet (Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm), where Kullander spent his career. Both Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase carry the name as valid with no junior synonyms, placing the fish in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Geophaginae.
Kullander assigned resticulosa to the Apistogramma regani species-group — a large, mostly small-bodied, somewhat catch-all assemblage within the genus — and diagnosed it specifically by the vertical dash-like markings along the abdominal sides, the feature the species name itself encodes. The genus name pairs the Greek apistos ('uncertain, inconstant') with gramma/gramme ('line' or 'mark'), an allusion to the variably developed, often incomplete lateral line that runs through these dwarf cichlids. The epithet resticulosa derives from the Latin resticula, the diminutive of restis — a thin rope, cord, or string — so the binomial reads, in effect, as 'the little dwarf cichlid marked with small cords,' a direct reference to those abdominal dashes.
Those dashes matter because resticulosa is otherwise easily confused with the closely related Apistogramma urteagai (Kullander, 1986) and with several undescribed forms that circulate as 'Apistogramma cf. resticulosa.' Aquarists and taxonomists separate them largely on caudal-fin pattern and the spacing of the vertical body bars — and even experienced keepers, including those on the apistogramma.com forums where Mike Wise and others have weighed in, frequently throw up their hands and trade the fish as 'Apistogramma cf. resticulosa/urteagai' because intermediate, intergrade-looking individuals keep turning up. The hobbyist literature tracks at least three geographic forms under the name — an upper Río Madre de Dios population on the Bolivia/Peru border, a lower Rio Madeira form (sometimes coded 'A17'), and the typical Humaitá fish — which is part of why its true limits remain unsettled. The species has no established English common name; it moves through the trade under its scientific name, usually with a locality tag.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small cichlid, even for a dwarf. Kullander's type series ran only 0.5–1 in SL, and FishBase lists a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length; in life, accounting for the tail, adult males typically reach roughly 2.5 in and females about 1.5 in in total length (the figures Aqualog and most keepers report), with females noticeably the smaller and stockier sex. As in nearly all Apistogramma, the sexes are easy to tell apart: males are larger, more colorful, and carry pointed, often produced dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, while females are rounder-finned and, when guarding eggs or fry, switch to an intense yellow overlaid with bold black blotches and bars.
For so plainly built a fish, a displaying male can be a surprise. Keepers describe rainbow flushes of blue and maroon washing through the unpaired fins under good side-lighting — color that is strongly mood- and light-dependent and drains away in a dim, stressed, or subordinate animal. The defining mark in both sexes, and the character Kullander built the description around, is the series of short vertical dashes or bars set low on the abdomen. Together with the caudal-fin pattern and the spacing of the lateral bars, those abdominal dashes are what distinguish resticulosa from Apistogramma urteagai and from the various 'resticulosa-complex' forms that arrive in mixed shipments. Sexual dimorphism is therefore pronounced and reliable — body size, fin shape, and breeding coloration all separate the sexes at a glance.
Habitat
Apistogramma resticulosa is an Amazon-basin endemic centered on the Rio Madeira drainage in the southwestern Amazon. The IUCN assessment maps it across Bolivia and Brazil — the states of Amazonas, Rondônia, and Acre — and the hobby record extends the picture to the upper Río Madre de Dios on the Bolivia/Peru frontier, giving an estimated extent of occurrence of roughly 907,62 mi², a wide range for a fish this small even if the actual records are scattered and tangled with look-alikes. The type locality is a small, leaf-littered forest stream and its associated backwater pools near Humaitá; some early accounts tie the collection sites to shallow overflow pools beside the Transamazon Highway roadbed, exactly the kind of marginal, slow water Apistogramma favor.
The water where it lives is soft and acidic. Measurements reported for the Rio Xicanga type-locality area (via Mayland & Bork) give a pH near 5.9, conductivity around 17 µS/cm, and hardness below 1 °dGH — classic dwarf-cichlid conditions — and aquarium sources such as Aqualog cite a working envelope of pH 5.0–7.0 at 72–82 °F. The wider basin picture is more nuanced: the Rio Madeira itself is a sediment-laden Andean 'whitewater' river, while many of its tributaries draining the Brazilian shield run clear. Kullander's notes and later hobby discussion treat resticulosa as a clear- to whitewater fish of stream margins and pools rather than a blackwater specialist, which sets it apart from the tea-stained, ultra-acid habitats of many better-known Apistogramma. Recorded depths are shallow throughout — these are fish of pool and stream-margin water on the order of a metre or less, not deep-water animals; FishBase carries no formal depth range, consistent with that shallow, benthopelagic habit.
Feeding
Field studies of this particular species are thin, so its diet is inferred mostly from the genus and from the shallow habitats it occupies. Apistogramma are benthic micro-predators of the leaf litter and marginal zones, taking up mouthfuls of fine substrate and combing them for small invertebrates — chironomid (midge) larvae, microcrustaceans, and other meiofauna — then expelling the sediment through the gills and mouth in the winnowing, 'earth-eating' manner shared across the geophagine cichlids to which the genus belongs. FishBase places resticulosa at a trophic level near 3.3, consistent with a small carnivore living on aquatic insect larvae and zooplankton rather than plant matter. Aquarium observers have explicitly described their fish sifting sand for food particles in just this way.
In its community resticulosa is a small player: a bottom-oriented fish of pools and stream margins that is itself prey for larger characins, cichlids, kingfishers, and other predators, and that shelters among submerged litter and root tangles. FishBase's 'medium' resilience score and low fishing-vulnerability rating reflect a short-lived, fast-maturing animal that turns over quickly, as small tropical-stream cichlids tend to.
Mating
Like the rest of its genus, Apistogramma resticulosa is a female-centered cave spawner, but within the Apistogramma spectrum it sits toward the casually polygamous, weakly harem-forming end rather than the strictly territorial extreme. The female does most of the courtship work — the conspicuous 'dancing' and color-flashing — before retreating to a chosen cave, while the male holds a looser, larger area and may pair with one female or service several if they are present. Forum keepers documenting wild-caught Peruvian stock describe exactly this sequence over a span of days: a female intensifying from normal coloration into bold black breeding dress, the pair carving out a corner of the tank and driving other fish (including a rival male Apistogramma) to the far side, and the male performing vigorous lateral displays to his prospective mate.
What sets resticulosa apart from most dwarf cichlids is its temperament. By the standards of a genus famous for murderous little tyrants, it is unusually peaceable, and several independent aquarists report keeping multiple males together without the usual carnage. In one frequently cited account three pairs spawned more or less continuously in a single modest community tank with the males tolerating one another and a fair share of fry surviving. That mutual male tolerance is well corroborated across hobby reports — but it is a tendency, not a guarantee: crowding, a shortage of broken sightlines, or an established brooding female can still trigger fights, as in any cichlid.
Breeding
Apistogramma resticulosa is a cave-spawning, larvophilic substrate brooder with maternal-dominant care, the standard reproductive pattern for the genus. The female deposits her eggs on the ceiling or wall of a cave or sheltered overhang — in aquaria an inverted small flowerpot or a length of pipe works well — then guards and fans the clutch and, after hatching, the wriggling larvae largely on her own, defending a compact territory around the brood while the male patrols a wider perimeter. FishBase records the same: eggs attached to the ceiling of caves, tended by the female. Once the fry are free-swimming she leads and herds them through the leaf litter, flaring her black-and-yellow brood dress at any threat and the fry diving for cover on her signal.
No published wild clutch count exists for resticulosa specifically; like its small regani-group congeners it lays a modest clutch, on the order of several dozen to perhaps a couple of hundred eggs, scaling with the size of the (small) female — a genus-typical figure rather than a measured one for this species, and flagged as such. Soft, acidic water is the consistent trigger across reliable accounts: keepers have bred the fish anywhere from about pH 6.2 to 6.8 in soft to moderately soft water, frequently over reverse-osmosis water cut with a little blackwater extract, conditioning pairs on small live and frozen foods. Warmth in the mid-to-upper 70s °F, gentle flow, and a defined spawning cave do the rest. The fry are not difficult to grow on once free-swimming; the harder part, for this species, is being certain you bought resticulosa and not one of its look-alikes in the first place.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma resticulosa is an occasionally kept but genuinely uncommon dwarf cichlid in the hobby. It turns up sporadically in specialist shipments, often mislabelled or sold alongside Apistogramma urteagai and various 'Apistogramma cf. resticulosa' forms, and most keepers who have maintained it acquired it deliberately from a specialist importer or breeder rather than from a general livestock retailer. That ID ambiguity is worth naming upfront: unless the fish come with a reputable locality provenance, there is a real chance a buyer is keeping a close look-alike. With that caveat in mind, published keeper accounts and forum discussions on apistogramma.com and thekrib.com broadly agree on the outlines of care, and much of the rest can be filled reliably from genus-level Apistogramma practice — flagged where species-specific data are thin.
A minimum footprint of 15 US gal (roughly a 60 × 12 in base) is the practical floor for a single pair, and 20–25 US gal gives a colony of one male and two or three females meaningful room. Tank dimensions matter more than raw volume: a long, shallow aquarium with a fine white or buff sand substrate suits the species far better than a tall tank, because resticulosa spends most of its time within the bottom 4–6 in, sifting the sand for food and patrolling between structural features. Leaf litter — dried catappa, beech, or oak leaves scattered and left to decompose slowly — is strongly recommended; it replicates the forest-stream floor, provides foraging substrate, softens water slightly as it tannins out, and gives fry and subordinate fish a refuge. Coconut-shell caves, small clay flowerpots on their sides, and sections of PVC pipe or bogwood with hollow cavities all serve as spawning sites. One candidate cave per female is a useful minimum. Gentle filtration — a sponge filter or a small canister with a spray bar turned to break the surface rather than blow a current across the bottom — matches the low-flow, shallow-pool habitat in which wild fish are collected.
Water chemistry should be soft and acidic. The type-locality measurement of around pH 5.9 and conductivity near 17 µS/cm gives the target biotope, but captive-bred fish (where available) and even wild-caught individuals acclimate to a practical range of roughly pH 6.0–6.8 in soft water — reverse osmosis or rainwater cut with a small proportion of hard tap water, or conditioned with a blackwater additive. The species-specific facts record a permissible range of pH 5.0–7.0 at 72–82 °F, but sustained pH above 7 is best avoided; neutral or harder water does not immediately harm adults but depresses breeding and, in some accounts, colours. Temperature in the mid-20s °C (75–79 °F as a working centre) suits the fish year-round, with a brief drop toward 72 °F sometimes used as a conditioning cue before a breeding attempt.
Resticulosa stands out among Apistogramma for its comparatively peaceable temperament, which is one of its genuine attractions. Multiple males can share a well-structured tank with sufficient broken sightlines — a tolerability that few Apistogramma species offer — and a harem arrangement (one male, two to four females each with her own territorial core) is workable in tanks from about 20 US gal upward. Suitable community tankmates are small, non-aggressive, and mid-water to surface oriented: pencilfish (Nannostomus species) and small tetras from the same basin — cardinal or ember tetras, for instance — make excellent dither fish, drawing resticulosa out into the open and providing a natural visual reference that signals the coast is clear. Corydoras or Otocinclus can work as bottom companions provided the aquarium is large enough that a brooding female does not feel her entire territory threatened. Avoid any fish large enough to intimidate or eat the cichlids, and avoid other benthic Apistogramma males in a small tank unless you are deliberately managing a colony with adequate space.
Breeding follows the standard Apistogramma pattern and is not especially difficult once the fish have settled and water conditions are right. The female adopts an intense yellow-and-black breeding dress, claims a cave, and manages the brood almost entirely alone; the male's role shifts to perimeter defence and, in a colony setting, to occasional attendance. Conditioning pairs or groups on live and frozen foods — small Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm — noticeably accelerates spawning readiness. Fry can be left with the female in a community setting as long as tankmates are non-predatory and small, or the female and fry can be moved to a dedicated grow-out tank after the first few days of free-swimming if survival rates matter more. Common keeper mistakes include maintaining the fish at too high a pH or in overly hard water, underestimating how much of the tank floor the female will try to defend when brooding (leading to conflict with bottom companions in a too-small aquarium), and — the persistent problem with this species — acquiring the wrong fish in the first place and not realising it until trying to match observed behavior or coloration to published accounts.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma resticulosa as Least Concern, in an assessment by Renata Guimarães Frederico dated 29 October 2020 (carried in the current Red List version). The justification is straightforward: the species is widely distributed across the Madeira drainage, with an extent of occurrence near 907,62 mi², and appears to be common, so despite an unknown population trend it comes nowhere near a threatened threshold. The assessment records no species-specific threats. It is collected for the ornamental-fish trade at national and international scale, but there is no indication that collection pressure endangers it, and it carries no CITES listing.
That species-level reassurance should be read against a basin under real and growing strain. The Rio Madeira is one of the Amazon's largest and most biodiverse tributaries, and its lower main stem has been heavily altered by the Santo Antônio and Jirau hydroelectric dams near Porto Velho, which have disrupted the river's natural flood pulse and sediment transport in ways documented to affect downstream fisheries and migratory species. Add accelerating deforestation, sedimentation, and land-use change across Rondônia and Acre, and the wider freshwater system is clearly stressed even where individual small-bodied fishes are not yet measurably affected. The honest framing is the one the data support: Apistogramma resticulosa is genuinely Least Concern today — a widespread and apparently abundant little fish — but it lives in a basin whose larger-scale degradation is the more pressing long-term concern. There is also a quieter taxonomic dimension: because the resticulosa complex bundles undescribed forms and the easily confused Apistogramma urteagai, keeping accurate locality data on wild-caught and captive-bred stock is itself a conservation act, guarding against quietly losing distinct populations under a single trade name.
