Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma wapisana was described in 2006 by Uwe Römer, Ingo Hahn and Anthony Conrad, in a chapter (pages 748-763) of the second volume of Römer's Cichlid Atlas — Natural History of South American Dwarf Cichlids. The description rests on ten specimens taken from two forest streams, locally called igarapés, in the surroundings of Boa Vista, the capital of Roraima, within the upper Rio Branco system. (FishBase lists the work under a 2007 reprint date, but the Catalog of Fishes, GBIF and the ZooBank registration all fix authorship to 2006, and that is the date used here.) The genus name pairs the Greek apistos, "uncertain" or "inconstant," with gramma, "line" or "marking" — a nod to the variable, often incomplete flank stripes that make Apistogramma notoriously hard to key out. The species epithet honors the Wapisana, also written Wapishana, Wapixana or Wapisiana (and, per FishBase, sometimes called Mawayana), an Indigenous people of the savannas and forests of northern Roraima and the adjacent Rupununi of Guyana, where the fish was collected.
The holotype is catalogued at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Genève as MHNG 2605.68, taken from a small igarapé less than a kilometre behind the bridge on the road running eastward out of Boa Vista. Paratypes are split among the Geneva museum (MHNG), the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (IRSNB) and the Senckenberg museum in Frankfurt (SMF). Before it had a name, the fish circulated among specialists as Apistogramma sp. "Balzfleck" — German for "courting spot" — after the dark blotch tied to its spawning display.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid and places it in Cichlidae, subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Geophagini (FishBase still files it under the older Geophaginae). Within the genus, the Apistogramma specialist Tom Christoffersen, drawing on the genetic work of Miller and Schliewen, places Apistogramma wapisana in the A.-pertensis lineage as the sister taxon to the entire A.-steindachneri group — a position that fits its geography, sitting between the steindachneri group's stronghold (Guyana, Suriname, the Rio Negro) and the pertensis group of the middle and lower Amazon. The species carries no synonyms.
Morphology
This is a genuinely tiny cichlid. The original description gives a maximum of about 1 in standard length for males and 1 in for females, and Christoffersen rounds the whole species to under 1.5 in — small even by the standards of a genus full of dwarfs. That females run slightly larger than males is itself the headline morphological fact: Apistogramma wapisana was the first Apistogramma ever described to show this reversed size dimorphism, where the rule across the genus is males that outgrow and out-decorate the females.
The body is elongate and slightly fusiform — more torpedo-shaped than the deep-bodied apistos most aquarists picture — and the dorsal fin sits unusually low along the back. Fin counts run to roughly 14-16 dorsal spines with 5-6 soft rays, and three anal spines with 4-6 soft rays. The diagnostic markings, per the description and Christoffersen's notes, are a large flank patch (the "lateral spot") sitting above a narrow lateral band that runs the length of the body, plus a very small but distinct caudal-peduncle spot and a characteristic color pattern that includes an orange wash near the band. The large lateral spot ties the fish to the rest of the pertensis lineage. The species also shows a reduced number of infraorbital (head) pores — only three — but Christoffersen reads this as a likely consequence of the fish's extreme small size rather than evidence of an "advanced" lineage. Color is muted by Apistogramma standards: there is no electric finnage here, which, along with its rarity, helps explain why it never became a hobby staple.
Habitat
Apistogramma wapisana is a fish of the Guiana Shield drainages straddling the Brazil-Guyana frontier. The Catalog of Fishes records it from Roraima (Brazil) and Guyana; Christoffersen's distributional notes set its core in the Rio Branco and extend it into the middle Rio Negro, into which the Branco flows. Its range is described as intermediate between the two related groups it sits between — the steindachneri group of Guyana, Suriname and the Rio Negro, and the pertensis group of the middle-to-lower Amazon. The type series came from flowing igarapés near Boa Vista, in the upper Branco.
The biotope is a small, muddy forest or savanna stream carpeted in a thick layer of leaf litter, influenced by white water — the sediment-rich, comparatively mineral-richer water that drains the Branco system — rather than the tea-black, ultra-soft water of the Rio Negro proper. FishBase records the in-situ water as soft and acidic, with a pH band of about 5.5-6.0, and Römer's account notes medium to comparatively high water temperatures. No precise depth has been published for this species; like Apistogramma generally it is a shallow-water, bottom-hugging fish of stream margins and leaf-litter beds, almost certainly within the top metre or so of water (the 0–3 ft figure given here is a habitat-typical inference, FLAGGED as such, not a measured value). It shelters among roots and drowned leaves — the classic Apistogramma refuge.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study exists for Apistogramma wapisana, so its trophic ecology is read from its anatomy, its congeners and its habitat (this paragraph is therefore inference from related species rather than direct observation of this one). Like other dwarf Apistogramma, it is a benthic micro-predator: a leaf-litter sifter that takes small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms and other meiofauna — from the substrate and detritus, often by taking in mouthfuls of fine sediment and sorting the edible fraction. The small mouth noted in the original description fits a fish working on very small prey. FishBase places it around trophic level 3.2, squarely in the small-carnivore range, and aquarium experience with the genus confirms an appetite skewed toward live and frozen foods over dry flake.
In its stream community it is one of the smaller players, sharing the leaf-litter zone with tetras, pencilfish, small catfishes such as Corydoras, loricariids and other dwarf cichlids. At under three centimetres it is as much prey as predator — vulnerable to larger fish and to birds — which is much of why so much of its life is spent tucked into litter and root tangles.
Mating
Beyond spawning, behavior follows the dwarf-cichlid template: Apistogramma wapisana is territorial and quarrelsome with its own kind in close quarters, but largely indifferent to small, non-territorial dither fish that share the water column above it. What sets its reproduction apart is the courtship itself. In most Apistogramma the female solicits and the male responds; in Apistogramma wapisana, as both Christoffersen and the original description emphasize, it is the male that opens the display — leaning on that dark "courting spot," the Balzfleck, for which the fish was nicknamed before it was named. Combined with the reversed size dimorphism, in which the female is the larger sex, this makes the species' whole pre-spawning dynamic an inversion of the genus norm. Pair formation otherwise resembles other cave-spawning apistos: a receptive pair forms over a sheltered cavity that becomes the focus of the female's defended territory, with the male holding the wider ground around it.
Breeding
Apistogramma wapisana is a cave-spawning substrate brooder — the standard Apistogramma reproductive mode. The female lays adhesive eggs on the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity (a leaf, a crevice, an upturned shell, or a spawning cave in the aquarium) and tends the clutch and the free-swimming fry, while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory. As across the genus, the female does the close brood care. No wild clutch count has been published for this species; congeneric small-bodied harem and cave spawners typically lay on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred eggs per spawning, and a fish this small sits at the low end of that range — a genus-typical figure offered here, FLAGGED, in the absence of a measured count. The species is, by hobbyist account, not difficult to spawn once its water is right: the Apistogramma authority Mike Wise reported breeding it in a tank as small as five US gallons (about 5 US gal) as far back as 1983 — well before it was scientifically named — describing it as plain to look at but easily kept and spawned. Beyond that, fry development and breeding triggers specific to Apistogramma wapisana are essentially undocumented; the soft, warm, acidic water of its native igarapés, with frequent small water changes, is the usual starting point inferred from close relatives.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma wapisana is a genuinely obscure fish in the hobby. It was described only in 2006, collected from remote igarapés near Boa Vista in Roraima, and remains essentially absent from the commercial trade. The handful of aquarium records that exist come from specialist breeders who either received wild imports or obtained fish from other collectors in the Apistogramma enthusiast community. Because documented keeper experience is thin, the husbandry guidance here is partly extrapolated from closely related and behaviorally similar species — particularly other small cave-spawning harem Apistogramma of the pertensis and steindachneri groups — and should be read accordingly. Where a detail is species-specific it is noted; where it is genus-typical, it is stated as such.
For a fish under three centimetres standard length, even a small tank is generous. Mike Wise reportedly bred this species in a five-gallon (roughly 5 US gal) aquarium before it had a scientific name, and a single pair or small harem is comfortable in a tank of 10–15 US gal. A longer footprint matters more than volume: a 60 × 12 in base gives a male room to hold a territory against one or two females without constant escalation, and territories in the genus are organized along the bottom, not the water column. Keep the water soft and warm — pH in the 5.5–6.0 range and temperature around 79–82 °F, matching the fish's native igarapé water — and use only RO or very soft, low-mineral tap water. Hardness well above 5 °dGH will suppress breeding and may cause long-term health problems; this is not a species that tolerates hard, alkaline conditions.
The substrate should be fine sand, pale to dark, over which the fish sifts and forages. A deep layer of dried leaf litter — Indian almond leaves or oak leaves are both standard — is close to mandatory: it replicates the habitat, drives the pH down gently, provides shelter, and supplies the micro-fauna (infusoria, small crustaceans) that keep small apistos thriving and in condition for spawning. Provide multiple caves or sheltered spawning sites — small ceramic tubes, coconut half-shells, or dense thickets of Java moss behind a piece of wood all work — because females each need a discrete territory around a cave, and if there is only one option, dominance conflicts become the whole story of the tank. Subdued lighting and a dark background settle the fish and bring out whatever color they carry.
Because Apistogramma wapisana maxes out below 1 in, tankmate selection is critical. Small, upper-water-column dither fish — pencilfish (Nannostomus species), small tetras such as Hyphessobrycon sweglesi or ember tetras, or similarly soft-water species — reduce the cichlids' wariness and spread aggression. Bottom-dwelling competitors or anything large enough to eat the cichlids is unsuitable. Corydoras that share the substrate can be risky with guarding females; if used at all, choose small, calm species and watch closely. This is not a community fish; it is an Apistogramma specialist's fish, kept in a biotope or near-biotope setup where its chemistry and behavioral needs can be met without compromise.
Sexing is possible but can be difficult on juveniles: the male carries the dark lateral courting spot ("Balzfleck") that gives the pre-description nickname, and in the inverted size dimorphism characteristic of this species the female is, unusually, the slightly larger fish. A harem of one male to two or three females is the standard Apistogramma approach and tends to produce steadier behavior than a lone pair, where female aggression toward the male can become a problem in a confined tank. Spawning follows the Apistogramma cave-spawning template: the female deposits adhesive eggs inside the cave, assumes exclusive fry care, and will vigorously defend the territory against the male and all other tankmates. Fry are small and require appropriately fine first foods — freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worms, or paramecia. Overall difficulty is moderate for the experienced dwarf-cichlid keeper, but the species' rarity means mistakes in sourcing suitable fish or matching water chemistry have no easy remedy.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma wapisana as Least Concern, in an assessment by R.G. Frederico dated 4 November 2020 and carried in the current (2025) Red List version. The reasoning is candid about its own limits: although very little is known about the fish, it has a comparatively wide geographic range across the Branco and Rupununi basins of Roraima and Guyana, occurs within at least one protected area, and faces no identified severe, range-wide threat. The population trend is listed as unknown, and the assessment itself notes the species appears not to be very common. It carries no CITES listing, and given its scarcity in the aquarium trade — wild imports are sporadic and it is essentially never commercially available — ornamental harvest is unlikely to be a meaningful pressure. (Not every database is current: the Cichlid Room Companion profile still lists it as Not Evaluated, predating the IUCN assessment.)
Placed in its wider setting, Apistogramma wapisana is a small, narrow-niche fish in a basin that is broadly intact but not pressure-free. As Kullander's treatment of the Cichlidae in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003) makes plain, the Neotropical cichlid fauna is vast and unevenly studied, and most Amazonian species — Apistogramma wapisana included — are Least Concern or Not Evaluated, exposed more to habitat change and the ornamental trade than to outright population collapse. For a leaf-litter stream specialist of the upper Rio Branco, the realistic risks are local and habitat-based: deforestation and agricultural expansion around Boa Vista, sedimentation and altered flow in the small igarapés it depends on, and possible future land-use or impoundment change — not a basin-wide crisis. The fair summary is the one the Red List itself implies: secure on paper, but poorly known, apparently uncommon, and tied to small forest streams whose fate is governed by what happens on the land around them.
