Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is a peacock cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, where it lives not on the open sand of most of its genus but tucked into caves, overhangs and shaded recesses in the intermediate zone between rock and sand. Males are among the largest Aulonocara, flushed in courtship with metallic blue, red and gold and trimmed in white-edged fins, which has made the fish a fixture of the aquarium trade for half a century. It is sold under hobby names such as the 'butterfly peacock' and as a long list of geographic colour variants — 'Eureka,' 'Lemon Jake,' 'Otter Point,' 'Cape Maclear,' 'Mamela/Mamelela' — each tied to a particular reef (the older trade name 'fairy cichlid' is best avoided, as it properly belongs to the unrelated Tanganyikan Neolamprologus brichardi). Like all Aulonocara it hunts by lying still and reading the vibrations of buried invertebrates through enlarged sensory pores on its lower jaw, then lunging into the sand.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described in 1974 by D. S. Johnson as Trematocranus jacobfreibergi, in a short paper titled 'Three new cichlids from Lake Malawi' in the hobbyist magazine Today's Aquarist (vol. 1, no. 3). The holotype (USNM 213498, a male) and a paratype (USNM 213499) are held at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, and the type locality is given as 'off Makanjila,' on the south-eastern arm of Lake Malawi. The fish was later transferred to Aulonocara, the genus Regan erected in 1922 for the lake's 'peacock' cichlids, where it has remained valid; the move is reflected in the standard treatments of Maréchal (1991), Tawil (2003) and Konings (2016). Aulonocara is a haplochromine genus of roughly two dozen described species plus many undescribed forms, defined by a battery of enlarged, fluid-filled lateral-line pores on the head used to detect prey vibrations. Aulonocara jacobfreibergi belongs to the cave-dwelling, intermediate-habitat wing of the genus rather than the open-sand 'sand-dwelling' Aulonocara that Konings revised in 1995 — see Morphology for how that split shows up in the skull. Because it shows strong reef-to-reef colour variation, it carries a long list of provisional location labels in the trade — these are geographic variants of one species, not separate taxa, and are best treated as such.

A 1994 molecular phylogeny by Moran and colleagues, which sampled A. jacobfreibergi among its terminal taxa, placed Aulonocara as a whole squarely within the mbuna clade rather than among the ecologically similar non-mbuna, open-water genera — a result at odds with the traditional ecomorphological split between rock-scraping mbuna and invertebrate-hunting sand/cave peacocks, and a reminder that Lake Malawi's classic mbuna/non-mbuna division does not track evolutionary relationships as cleanly as it tracks habitat and diet.

Morphology

This is one of the larger peacocks: males commonly reach about 6 in and are reported to around 6.5 in, with FishBase listing a maximum of roughly 6 in total length and aquarium fish sometimes quoted larger; Konings' Enjoying Cichlids gives a more conservative typical maximum of about 5 in. The body is the typical Aulonocara shape — moderately deep, laterally compressed, with a slightly upturned mouth and the genus's conspicuous row of widened sensory pores along the lower jaw and preopercle. As in every Aulonocara, those sensory pores come from greatly enlarged infraorbital bones beneath the eye, but the degree of enlargement tracks habitat: in the open-sand species the infraorbitals are so swollen they crowd out cheek scales almost entirely, whereas in A. jacobfreibergi, as a rock- and cave-dwelling species, the expansion is more modest and leaves room for two to four rows of scales on the cheek — a useful, if technical, distinction from the nearly scaleless cheek of a sand-dweller like A. rostratum, and a fuller scale count than most other rock-dwelling peacocks (e.g. A. stuartgranti), which typically carry just a single row. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Dominant males are vividly coloured, usually a metallic blue head and face over a body that can be blue, red-orange or golden depending on population, with white to pale-blue margins on the dorsal and anal fins and egg-spots on the anal fin; the white fin edging is part of what earns the 'butterfly' and 'fairy' names. Females and subordinate males are a cryptic silvery-brown with faint vertical bars, a camouflage that suits a fish living in shadow. Much of the colour variation that drives the trade is geographic: the ornamental 'Eureka' and 'Eureka Red' strains emphasize red flanks, the 'Lemon Jake' from Undu Reef is strongly yellow, and Otter Point and Cape Maclear fish carry their own blue-and-gold signatures. Albino and line-bred 'colour select' strains also exist and are aquarium products rather than wild morphs.

Habitat

Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is endemic to the Lake Malawi system — shared, like the lake itself, between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania — and is found mainly through the southern part of the lake — Cape Maclear and Otter Point on the Nankumba Peninsula, Monkey Bay, Thumbi East and Boadzulu Islands, Mumbo and Domwe Islands, Makanjila (the type locality), and reefs such as Makokola and Mazinzi — with named populations scattered north into Tanzanian waters at Hongi Island and beyond; the yellow 'Mamela/Mamelela' ('Lemon Jake') population photographed by Konings at Undu Reef, on the Tanzanian side of the lake's north-east, is among the best documented of these northern populations. Unlike the open-sand peacocks, it is a fish of the intermediate zone, where rocky shore grades into sand. Konings and the malawi.si database describe northern populations in pure rocky habitat among large boulders, while southern populations occupy intermediate habitat where males hold small caves, overhangs and dark recesses; the fish spends much of its time inside or just outside these caves rather than cruising open sand. Konings is specific that this is a shallow-water fish: it is 'mostly found in caves of the shallow rocky habitat,' which are often large with muddy bottoms, and early-morning divers watch it foraging from the sand in front of its cave before it retreats inside for the day. The directly comparable cave-dwelling Aulonocara of the intermediate zone occupy roughly 10–33 ft, with some related forms reaching about 66 ft, so Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is best read as a shallow-to-intermediate cave dweller rather than a deep-water species; FishBase carries no explicit depth figure for it. Lake Malawi itself is warm, hard and alkaline; FishBase gives a preferred range of about 75–79 °F, pH 7.5–8.0 and dH 9–19, consistent with the lake's stable, mineral-rich surface water.

Feeding

Like all Aulonocara, Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is a benthic invertebrate hunter that exploits the genus's signature sensory adaptation, a technique Konings termed "sonar-feeding" and considers characteristic enough that a fish can be assigned to the genus on feeding style alone. It hovers or rests over sand near its cave, typically holding just 0.5 in above the substrate while the enlarged, fluid-filled pores on its lower jaw register the faint vibrations of small invertebrates moving beneath it; when it locates prey it darts down and takes a mouthful of sand, sifting edible items out and expelling the rest through the gills and mouth. The natural diet is dominated by benthic invertebrates — insect larvae (especially chironomid midge larvae), small crustaceans and other meiofauna living in and on the sediment. FishBase places the species at a trophic level near 3.6, consistent with a small carnivore rather than an algae-grazer. In the lake community it occupies the invertebrate-feeding niche of the rock-sand interface, overlapping with other Aulonocara and with sand-sifting haplochromines but tied more closely to cave margins than to open flats.

Mating

Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with a lek-like social structure typical of the genus. Mature males establish and defend a territory centred on a cave, overhang or recess, which doubles as the spawning site; from this shelter the male displays his courtship colours to passing females, intensifying his blue, red or gold and flaring his white-edged fins. Several females may visit and spawn with a single dominant male, so the operational sex ratio at a good cave site is strongly female-biased. Males are territorial toward rival males, and in aquaria keepers deliberately stock one male with multiple (typically four to six) females to spread and dampen male aggression — a direct reflection of the wild lek system. Outside of spawning the fish is comparatively unaggressive for a Malawi cichlid, and non-breeding individuals and females spend much of their time in the cryptic silver-brown plumage that keeps them inconspicuous around the rocks.

Breeding

Spawning follows the standard Lake Malawi mouthbrooding pattern, with the cave serving as the nest. The male leads a ripe female into or beside his recess and the pair circles in a T-position; the female lays eggs in small batches and immediately takes them into her mouth, then nips at the egg-spots on the male's anal fin, drawing in sperm to fertilize the clutch already in her buccal cavity. Clutches are modest — on the order of a few dozen eggs, with figures up to around fifty reported — fitting a fish that invests in large, well-provisioned young rather than numbers. The female then carries the developing eggs and larvae in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks, ceasing to feed for much of that period, before releasing free-swimming fry. After release the fry are independent, though a female may briefly allow them to shelter in her mouth when threatened. Parental care is entirely maternal; the male's contribution ends at fertilization. The species breeds readily in captivity under Malawi-typical conditions, which is a large part of why it has remained continuously available in the hobby since the 1970s.

In the aquarium

Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is one of the best-known and most widely kept peacock cichlids, and it has been in continuous commercial supply since the 1970s. That longevity is a double-edged sword: the species itself is easy to find, but pure wild-type fish of any given geographic form are increasingly rare in the hobby. Most fish sold as 'Eureka Red,' 'Lemon Jake,' 'Butterfly peacock' or simply 'jacobfreibergi' are captive line-bred strains that have been selected for intensified colour, or are first- or second-generation hybrids with other Aulonocara species. Keepers who want to work with fish that approach the wild phenotype should buy from breeders who document provenance. This is not a criticism of the trade fish — they are attractive and hardy — but it matters for anyone interested in true conservation-minded keeping or in producing offspring worth trading.

The minimum footprint for a single-male group is a tank of roughly 40–55 US gal (a 4-foot or 47 in tank is workable for a species that reaches 6 in, though 59 in gives more margin), and larger is always better. Like all Malawi cichlids, Aulonocara jacobfreibergi needs hard, alkaline water that mirrors the lake's stable chemistry: pH 7.8–8.6, general hardness 10–20 °dH, temperature 75–79 °F, and strong biological filtration with good surface turnover. The lake's deep water is naturally very low in organics; in the aquarium that means regular partial water changes and avoiding overstocking. Unlike the open-sand peacocks, this species is a cave dweller and will not thrive — and will not display properly — without rocky structure. The hardscape should include large flat-topped or stacked rocks forming genuine cave openings and overhangs; a male without a cave to anchor his territory becomes restless and more aggressive, and a female with nowhere to retreat is at risk. A sandy substrate (oolitic aragonite, play sand or crushed coral) is appropriate and mirrors the sand-and-rock interface the fish forages over in the lake.

Social structure in the tank should replicate the wild lek: one mature male kept with a minimum of three females, and ideally four to six. A single male with one or two females produces relentless chasing that routinely kills the females — though it is worth noting that Konings' own published stocking examples include a single pair of A. jacobfreibergi thriving inside a larger, diverse 400-litre Malawi community (alongside Copadichromis borleyi, Sciaenochromis fryeri and Labidochromis caeruleus), suggesting the strict harem requirement loosens somewhat once enough other cichlids are present to diffuse a male's attention. If the tank is large enough to hold two males of different size without constant fighting, some keepers manage it, but the safer rule is one male per display.

Mixed peacock tanks need more care than a blanket rule can capture. Konings' own working framework divides Aulonocara into a small number of informal groups for exactly this purpose: A. jacobfreibergi with all of its geographic races forms one group on its own; the Chitande-type Aulonocara, the blue/yellow A. stuartgranti types, and the sand-dwelling Aulonocara make up three more. Mixing within a group — different geographic races of jacobfreibergi itself, for instance — reliably produces interbreeding and should be avoided; a tank should hold only one race or strain of jacobfreibergi at a time. Mixing across groups is comparatively safe: a single male jacobfreibergi can be combined with one male each of, say, A. stuartgranti, A. ethelwynnae and a sand-dwelling species such as A. guentheri with little risk of hybridization, because their strongly differing appearance and habitat preference keeps courtship targeted. Mixing Aulonocara jacobfreibergi with Mbuna (rock-dwelling haplochromines) is usually a mistake regardless: Mbuna are more aggressive and will harass peacocks relentlessly, and their dietary needs diverge; some Mbuna with access to a high-protein diet develop Malawi bloat. Suitable tankmates in a species-appropriate community are other non-aggressive, non-cave-competing haplochromines of similar size — mid-water Copadichromis, Nyassachromis, and passive utaka — as well as Synodontis catfish for the bottom.

Breeding in captivity is straightforward under the above conditions. Conditioning males with a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia) and occasional live food brings males into full colour and triggers spawning without special intervention. Females carrying eggs should ideally be moved to a dedicated brooding tank or given dense rockwork to hide from the male; some keepers strip eggs at 10–14 days and raise them artificially, which increases fry numbers but requires attention to temperature and aeration. A carrying female who is left in the main tank should not be netted or chased — stress causes early release or swallowing of the clutch. Fry are released at about 0.5 in and can take freshly hatched brine shrimp and fine crushed flake from the start.

The most common keeper mistakes are understocking females relative to males, providing insufficient rocky cave structure, mixing with aggressive Mbuna, and inadvertent hybridization through careless tankmate selection. Water-quality lapses — infrequent water changes, high nitrate, dropping pH from a depleted buffer — are the other major cause of health problems; Lake Malawi cichlids evolved in some of the most chemically stable freshwater on Earth and do not tolerate the creeping acidification that some soft-water fish can shrug off. With consistent water management, appropriate social structure, and genuine caves in the hardscape, Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is a moderately easy species well within the reach of an intermediate-level cichlid keeper, and a dominant male in full colour against pale sand and dark rock is a genuinely striking display animal.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Aulonocara jacobfreibergi as Least Concern, reflecting a relatively wide distribution across the southern and central parts of Lake Malawi and no evidence of overall population decline. The species has no CITES listing. The chief documented pressure is the ornamental trade: because individual reef populations are visually distinctive and commercially desirable, localized collecting can fall heavily on single sites — the yellow 'Mamela/Mamelela' (Lemon Jake) population at Undu Reef, Tanzania, in the lake's north-east, is the most-cited example of a geographically restricted variant exposed to heavy collection. The wider backdrop is Lake Malawi's broader stresses: sedimentation from catchment deforestation, nearshore eutrophication, and intense artisanal fishing pressure that affects the lake's shallow rock-and-sand zones. None of these is documented as a present threat sufficient to move this particular species off Least Concern, but the combination of trade demand on showy single-reef colour forms and habitat pressure on the inshore zone is the reason its status is worth monitoring rather than ignoring.
