Bujurquina mariae is a small, unassuming cichlid of the Orinoco basin, native to the slow clear- and blackwater creeks, palm swamps, and floodplain lagoons of the Colombian and Venezuelan llanos. Despite a reputation as a plain brown 'mojarra' in the rivers where it is netted by the thousand for the ornamental trade, it carries one of the most sophisticated reproductive strategies in the Neotropics: like all members of its genus, it is a biparental delayed mouthbrooder, laying its eggs on a portable leaf or scrap of substrate and later taking the developing brood into the mouth to finish their incubation away from the basin's many predators.

Taxonomy & naming

Bujurquina mariae was first described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1922 as Aequidens mariae, in his monograph 'The fishes of western South America, Part I' (Memoirs of the Carnegie Museum, volume 9), and specifically in its appendix on the fishes of the Río Meta in Colombia. The type locality is Barrigón, on the Río Meta in the Orinoco system of Colombia; the holotype (CAS 34711, formerly Indiana University 15011) and a series of paratypes in the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum, London, anchor the name. The fish remained in the catch-all genus Aequidens until 1986, when Sven O. Kullander, revising the cichlids of Peru's Amazon, erected the genus Bujurquina to hold a group of small, biparentally custodial 'primitive' or delayed mouthbrooders that had been lumped under Aequidens. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both list the species as valid as Bujurquina mariae (Eigenmann, 1922), with Aequidens mariae as the sole synonym. The genus name comes from bujurqui, a vernacular Peruvian word for these cichlids; the epithet mariae honours not a woman named Maria but Brother (Hermano) Apolinar María (1867–1949), the French-born La Salle missionary, naturalist and ornithologist who directed the natural-history museum of the Instituto de La Salle in Bogotá and supplied Eigenmann with the Meta-basin collections from which the species was described. It is worth flagging a long-standing source of confusion the hobby literature warned about decades ago: 'mariae' was for years used as a trade catch-all for almost any striped Bujurquina exported from Iquitos, Leticia or Manaus, so that fish sold under the name were frequently other species entirely (as Paul Loiselle stressed in his 1980s key to the Peruvian Bujurquina). The true Bujurquina mariae is a distinct, comparatively northern fish of the Orinoco — not the Amazon — and that distinction matters for anyone trying to match a fish in a tank to this profile.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid. Reported maximum size varies with the source and with how it is measured: Eigenmann's original material reached only about 4.5 in and the IUCN assessment repeats that figure, while FishBase lists a maximum of 6 in total length and aquarium references cite roughly 6 in or about 6 inches standard length for well-grown males. A realistic expectation for the species is a fish in the 4–6 in range, with females smaller than males. In overall shape it is a typical Bujurquina — a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed acara-type cichlid with a fairly large eye and a slightly produced snout. The ground colour is an unflashy olive-tan to grey-brown that pales below, broken by a dark mid-lateral band running from behind the eye toward the tail and by a row of dark blotches along the flank; a dark bar typically runs through or below the eye. The genus is distinguished from the closely similar 'true' acaras of Aequidens partly by the form of these markings and by details of squamation and dentition that Kullander used to define it, rather than by any single showy feature. Spawning and dominant fish intensify their pattern, the dark band and blotches sharpening against a cleaner body, and the unpaired fins can show fine pale spotting and a thin light margin. Sexual dimorphism is modest and most reliably read from size and condition: males grow larger and develop somewhat longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins, while ripe females are rounder and deeper-bodied through the belly. There is no strong difference in colour between the sexes, which is itself consistent with a biparental species in which both parents share the work of guarding and brooding.

Habitat

Bujurquina mariae is essentially an Orinoco-basin endemic. Catalog of Fishes gives its distribution as the upper Orinoco River basin in Colombia, Venezuela and (marginally) Ecuador, while the IUCN assessment maps it across the Colombian and Venezuelan llanos: from the Andean piedmont of the Meta and Casanare drainages (the Orotoy, Acacías, Guayuriba, Guatiquía, Cusiana and Pauto rivers, around Villavicencio) out across the high plains, north into the Arauca and Casanare lowlands, east to the Vichada and Bita rivers, and into the Guiana-Shield blackwaters of the Inírida, Atabapo and Guaviare; on the Venezuelan side it reaches the Aguaro–Guariquito and Manapire systems and the Caura and Aro rivers of the Guayana region. Its estimated extent of occurrence exceeds half a million square kilometres. Within that range it is a fish of quiet water — rivers, lagoons, marshes and the palm swamps known as morichales, dominated by the moriche palm Mauritia flexuosa. It is strikingly tolerant of water chemistry, which is part of why it is so widespread. Field surveys record it in soft, acidic clearwater of the Andean foothills (conductivity around 6–65 µS/cm, pH 5–6), in Guiana-Shield blackwater (conductivity below 20 µS/cm, pH roughly 4.2–7.3), and even in mineral-rich whitewater of the Apure and Arauca (conductivity 200–350 µS/cm, pH 6–7.7). FishBase's aquarium-oriented figures of pH 6.5–7.0 and hardness 5–12 dGH, with temperatures of about 75–79 °F, sit comfortably in the middle of that field-measured envelope. These are warm, lowland-tropical waters; the species occupies the shallow margins and floodplain habitats rather than deep open water, so although precise depth bands are not published for it, an effective habitat depth of roughly 0–7 ft over leaf-litter, sand and submerged wood is the realistic figure (flagged here as a habitat-typical estimate rather than a measured datum).

Feeding

Bujurquina species are best described as small, opportunistic carnivores and omnivores that forage over the bottom and through leaf litter. The IUCN account, drawing on Colombian dietary studies of the genus, reports carnivorous habits with predation on aquatic invertebrates and small fish; FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.5, consistent with an animal that takes mostly invertebrate prey and the occasional small fish. In the slow, structure-rich creeks and morichal swamps it inhabits, that translates to a diet of insect larvae (chironomids and other dipterans), micro-crustaceans, worms and other small benthic invertebrates picked from the substrate and from submerged wood and roots, supplemented by whatever falls into the water from the gallery forest and by small fishes when available. It is not a specialised sand-sifting eartheater like its geophagine neighbours; it works the leaf litter and soft sediment as a generalist gleaner. In the community of a llanos creek it occupies the modest niche of a small mid-level predator on invertebrates — abundant, unspecialised, and an important link between the basin's rich invertebrate fauna and its larger fish.

Mating

Like the rest of its genus, Bujurquina mariae forms monogamous pairs in which both partners invest heavily in the brood. Detailed courtship has not been published for this species specifically, but the pattern across Bujurquina and the closely allied delayed-mouthbrooding cichlids is consistent and well documented. A pair forms and takes up a small territory centred on a hard surface or, characteristically, a fallen leaf or other movable object on the substrate. Courtship involves mutual displays, lateral spreading of the fins, and the cleaning of the chosen spawning surface by both fish. Because the species is a biparental brooder rather than a harem-forming mouthbrooder, aggression is directed outward at intruders and potential egg predators rather than between the sexes once a bond is settled, though as in most cichlids an unsettled or mismatched pair can turn on each other. The use of a portable spawning surface is the behavioural signature that ties the courtship to what follows: it lets the parents relocate the clutch, and ultimately the whole brood goes into their mouths, so the 'nest' is less a fixed site than a starting point.

Breeding

Bujurquina mariae is a biparental, delayed (larvophilic) mouthbrooder — the defining reproductive mode of the genus, and the single most interesting thing about the fish. Spawning begins conventionally for a substrate-spawning cichlid: the female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on the cleaned surface, often a leaf, and both parents guard and fan them. FishBase records a clutch of roughly 100–400 eggs and notes that, after about two days, one of the parents takes the eggs into its mouth; a Colombian fisheries study (Ortega-Lara et al. 2015) reports a much lower relative fecundity of around 30 eggs with asynchronous ovulation, the difference likely reflecting body size and counting method. What makes the strategy 'delayed' is that the eggs are not picked up at spawning, as in the maternal mouthbrooders of the African Rift lakes, but only once they near hatching: the parents then carry the eggs or newly hatched wrigglers in the buccal cavity, passing the brood back and forth between them, and continue to shelter the free-swimming fry in their mouths at any sign of danger for some weeks after release. This two-stage care — open guarding of the clutch followed by oral incubation of the young — buys the brood protection from the heavy egg and fry predation of a tropical floodplain while sparing the parents the energetic cost of mouthbrooding from day one. In aquaria the genus breeds readily for experienced keepers given soft, warm, slightly acidic water and a quiet, well-structured tank; keepers consistently report the hallmark behaviour of the pair picking up and mouthbrooding the wrigglers until they are free-swimming. Specific captive spawning accounts for Bujurquina mariae itself are sparse, so the figures above are best read as genus-typical, well-supported by FishBase's data for the species and by repeated hobbyist observation across Bujurquina.

In the aquarium

Bujurquina mariae is one of the more reliably available Bujurquina in the hobby — it has been exported from Colombia for decades, and a keeper willing to sort through the mixed lots from Leticia or Bogotá can usually identify and acquire genuine material. It is a reasonable choice for an intermediate cichlid keeper who wants a small, personable New World fish with an interesting breeding biology, and its tolerance of varied water chemistry makes it somewhat forgiving compared with the more demanding South American dwarfs. A single pair can be kept in a tank of around 25 US gal (roughly 90 × 17.5 in footprint), though a larger vessel — 40 US gal or more — gives more room to manage breeding aggression and suits a small community. Water quality matters more than hitting precise parameter targets: the species is naturally found across a broad chemistry envelope (pH 5.0–7.7, conductivity from Guiana-Shield blackwater to moderate llanos whitewater), but aquarium fish acclimate best to soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the range of pH 6.2–7.2 and hardness up to about 10 dH. Temperature of 75–79 °F suits it well. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are more important than chasing ideal hardness figures.

Decor should replicate the littered margins and palm-swamp shallows the fish inhabits in the wild. A substrate of fine sand is preferred — the fish turns over the upper layer while feeding and will use the sand as a spawning surface if no leaf is available. A generous layer of dried leaves (Indian almond, oak or beech are all used with success by keepers) serves double duty: it conditions the water mildly toward the acidic, provides refugia for fry, and, crucially, gives the pair their characteristic spawning surface. One or two broad leaves placed flat on the substrate are typically selected over any other site. Driftwood, tangles of roots and some floating cover round out the environment; dense planting is not necessary but a few robust plants add cover for subdominant fish. Good surface agitation and clean, well-oxygenated water prevent the lethargy that can signal early bacterial or parasitic problems.

Bujurquina mariae is peaceful for a cichlid outside of breeding, and in a spacious, well-structured tank it mixes acceptably with other small, similarly sized fish of the Orinoco region — tetras such as Hyphessobrycon and Moenkhausia species, pencilfish, small loricariids, and comparable small cichlids are frequently kept with it. What the species cannot tolerate is persistent harassment during spawning: once a pair has formed and eggs are present, the pair will defend a territory aggressively against anything in the tank, and small, slow, or long-finned tankmates placed too close to the spawning site will be badly stressed or driven into the corners. Providing visual breaks — upright driftwood, a taller clump of plants — allows co-inhabitants to break line of sight and usually keeps the community workable. Keeping two pairs in the same tank is problematic in anything smaller than a large display tank.

Breeding is the main reason keepers seek out the species, and it is achievable with modest effort. Conditioning the pair on a varied diet of frozen chironomid larvae (bloodworm), Daphnia, small earthworm fragments and a quality micro-pellet reliably brings fish into spawning condition. Spawning follows the pattern described in the Breeding section: the pair cleans a leaf or flat stone, the female deposits the clutch (typically in the dozens to low hundreds), both parents guard the eggs openly for roughly 48 hours, and then one parent — often initially the female — takes the eggs into the mouth as they approach hatching. Both parents then share buccal incubation of the wrigglers and later shelter the free-swimming fry in their mouths at any threat. The most common keeper mistake is separating the pair or disturbing the tank at this stage: the parents communicate by passing the brood between their mouths and need to be left alone. A second common error is confusing the mouth-holding behaviour with the fish eating the eggs — it is not; a parent that genuinely feels threatened or stressed may consume the brood, but under calm conditions the pair will carry the young through to independence. Fry are large enough at first release to accept freshly hatched Artemia nauplii and micro-worms immediately, and they grow reasonably quickly on a mixed live-and-frozen diet. As a generalisation from the genus, this species is considered moderately straightforward to breed by the standards of mouthbrooding cichlids, and a settled, well-fed pair in a quiet tank with leaves present will usually spawn without further prompting.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina mariae as Least Concern (assessed 22 October 2020, published 2022; assessor Lina Mesa-Salazar, reviewer D. Rodríguez-Olarte). The rationale is its wide distribution across tributaries of the Orinoco basin and its presence in several protected areas — among them the La Macarena management area with the Sierra de La Macarena and Tinigua national parks, the Estrella Fluvial de Inírida and Bita River RAMSAR sites in Colombia, and the Aguaro–Guariquito National Park in Venezuela — even though much of its range overlaps regions under heavy human pressure. The population trend is listed as unknown, and there are no population estimates. The species is harvested for the ornamental trade and is sold nationally and internationally out of Colombia, a fishery based on direct extraction from the wild; this is flagged as a potential pressure but not, at present, a population-level threat. The broader concern is the state of the llanos and Orinoco lowlands themselves. The Andean-foothill portion of the range is heavily transformed by agro-industry — African oil palm and rice plantations, extensive cattle ranching — and is largely allocated to hydrocarbon exploration across the Meta and Casanare departments; mining (legal and illegal, including alluvial gold, coltan and tantalum in the Inírida and Atabapo) and associated pollution degrade the Guiana-Shield blackwaters, and Colombian assessments rank the piedmont and Guianese ecosystems of the basin among the most pressured in the country. As a tolerant, widespread habitat generalist, Bujurquina mariae is far better buffered against these changes than the basin's many narrow-range specialists, and its Least Concern listing reflects that. But the listing is a statement about a wide range, not about an untroubled one, and the wetlands it depends on are under accelerating strain.
