Bujurquina peregrinabunda is a small, unobtrusive acara-type cichlid of the western Amazon lowlands, one of the wide-ranging members of a genus otherwise full of narrow stream endemics. Its name is the giveaway: peregrinabunda means "one that travels abroad," and where most of its relatives are pinned to a single Andean foothill drainage, this fish turns up across the central western Amazon from Peru into Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil. Like all Bujurquina it is a biparental delayed mouthbrooder — a pair spawns on a leaf or other movable surface, then takes the developing brood into their mouths, a behaviour that sits halfway between the substrate-spawning and mouthbrooding strategies of other cichlids.

Taxonomy & naming

Bujurquina peregrinabunda was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1986, in his monograph Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru — the same landmark work in which he erected the genus Bujurquina itself. Kullander created the genus to hold an assemblage of biparentally mouthbrooding 'acaras' that had previously been lumped into the catch-all genus Aequidens, and described thirteen new Bujurquina species in one stroke; peregrinabunda was among them. The holotype (NRM 17596, in the Swedish Museum of Natural History) and its paratypes came from a tributary of the Río Yaguasyacu just below Esperanza, in the River Ampiyacu drainage of Departamento Loreto, Peru. The name is built from the genus, taken from bujurqui, a widely used local Peruvian word for these cichlids, and the Latin epithet peregrinabunda, glossed by the ETYFish Project as 'one that travels abroad,' a reference to the species' unusually broad range. Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid and places it in subfamily Cichlinae (FishBase still files Bujurquina under the older heading Cichlasomatinae); within the radiation it belongs to the eartheater-allied South American cichlids. The species sits in the central-western-Amazon lowland group of Bujurquina alongside Bujurquina moriorum and Bujurquina syspilus — a trio that the hobby historically shipped, indiscriminately, out of Iquitos, Leticia and Manaus under the wrong names 'Aequidens mariae' or 'Ae. vittata.' Recent work by Říčan and colleagues (2022, 2023) has reshaped the genus considerably, splitting out many undescribed forms and confirming peregrinabunda as one of its more securely identifiable, wide-ranging species.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of 4 in standard length, the figure coming from Kullander's original description, and aquarium fish are usually in that same modest range. The body is the typical 'acara' shape — moderately deep, laterally compressed, with the rounded profile and continuous dorsal fin of a generalist stream cichlid rather than anything specialised. Bujurquina species are separated from one another largely by fine details of colour pattern, and peregrinabunda's diagnostic combination, per Loiselle's annotated key to the Peruvian species, is a soft dorsal fin abundantly marked with light spots together with a dark stripe running along the margin of the preopercle, and — importantly — no suborbital (cheek) stripe and no preopercular spot. That clean cheek is what separates it from look-alikes such as Bujurquina syspilus and Bujurquina huallagae. Ground colour is a muted olive-tan to grey-brown overlaid with iridescent blue-green flecking on the cheek and gill cover, with the dark lateral markings characteristic of the genus. Like other Bujurquina, mature fish can develop trailing, frilly extensions to the caudal fin. Sexual dimorphism is weak and easily overstated: as in most acaras, males tend to grow slightly larger and carry somewhat more extended fins, while ripe females are rounder-bodied, but there is no reliable colour difference, and sexing small or unbreeding fish is genuinely difficult.

Habitat

Bujurquina peregrinabunda is a fish of the Amazon lowlands. FishBase anchors its range to the lower Ampiyacu River basin of Peru and to Codajás in Amazonas, Brazil, while Catalog of Fishes records it more broadly across the Amazon basin in Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru — the wide distribution its name advertises. Říčan and colleagues' analysis of Bujurquina ecomorphology places it firmly in the lowland (rather than Andean-foothill) species group of the central western Amazon. The lowland habitats they describe for the genus are telling: rivers and streams generally below about 656–984 ft elevation, slow-flowing or near-stagnant, with soft beds of mud, sand and leaf litter and high structural complexity from sunken trunks and branches. Kullander's own field note for this species is consistent — streams with little, clear, slowly running water descending a forested slope. Water chemistry has not been published specifically for peregrinabunda, but lowland western-Amazon streams of this type are warm and typically soft and acidic to near-neutral; FishBase records a temperature range of roughly 73–86 °F for the species. The pH and hardness figures used here (mildly acidic, soft water) are inferred from that lowland clear/whitewater stream setting rather than measured at the type locality, and should be read as habitat-typical estimates. Depth is likewise not a published parameter — these are shallow stream and margin fish, so the 0–7 ft band given reflects the habitat, not a sampled depth range.

Feeding

There is no published gut-content study for Bujurquina peregrinabunda specifically. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.5, which marks it as a low-level carnivore or omnivore rather than a strict herbivore or piscivore, and Říčan and colleagues found that most Bujurquina are trophic generalists, with comparatively little specialisation of the head and jaws relative to the strong body-shape differences that track lowland-versus-upland habitat. In practical terms this is a typical small acara: a benthic-leaning opportunist that takes aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates, crustaceans, and organic detritus picked from the leaf litter and soft sediment of its slow lowland streams, supplemented by whatever small drifting items the current delivers. In the community it occupies the unremarkable but ecologically important role of a small generalist invertivore working the bottom of the forest stream.

Mating

Bujurquina are pair-bonding cichlids, and peregrinabunda follows the genus pattern: a male and female form a bond and jointly hold a territory through the breeding cycle, rather than the female-dominated or harem systems seen in some other Neotropical groups. Detailed pre-spawning behaviour has not been documented for this particular species in the wild, so the account here is genus-typical. Courtship in Bujurquina involves the usual cichlid repertoire of lateral displays, jaw-locking and substrate cleaning, with the pair selecting and preparing a spawning surface together. They are only moderately aggressive by cichlid standards — keepers of Bujurquina consistently describe them as neither very large nor especially belligerent, with territorial squabbling that produces nipped, frilly fins more often than serious harm. That relatively mild temperament, combined with the genus's interesting brood care, is part of why hobbyists who have kept these fish are mildly puzzled that they have never become popular.

Breeding

The defining feature of Bujurquina, and the reason Kullander separated the genus from Aequidens, is its mode of parental care: biparental delayed (larvophile) mouthbrooding. Rather than guarding eggs in a fixed pit or on a rock the way a substrate spawner does, a Bujurquina pair lays its eggs on a movable object — characteristically a fallen leaf, but a small flat stone or other loose surface will serve — and the parents physically shift that object around their territory. After the eggs hatch, the pair take the wrigglers into their mouths and brood them buccally until the fry are free-swimming, then continue to shelter the young in their mouths when threatened. This 'leaf-spawning' strategy is well documented across the genus and is reported first-hand by aquarists: a long-time keeper describing fish from the mariae/vittata complex recounts a pair laying eggs on a small rock, moving it around, and then mouthbrooding the wrigglers until they were swimming — exactly the delayed-mouthbrooding pattern Kullander defined. In the related Bujurquina vittata, the male is reported to take up and brood the young for roughly the first five days before brooding duty is shared with the female. Specific clutch sizes have not been published for peregrinabunda; congeneric Bujurquina and similar small acaras typically produce broods on the order of a few dozen to a couple of hundred eggs, and that genus-typical range is the best available estimate here. The species has been bred only incidentally in the hobby, where it remains uncommon.

In the aquarium

Bujurquina peregrinabunda is a genuine rarity in the hobby — most keepers who have encountered it received it mixed into a shipment labelled as another Bujurquina, an Aequidens, or a generic 'acara.' That obscurity is a pity, because it is an easy, undemanding fish once its modest water-quality requirements are met. A pair can be housed comfortably in a tank of 25–30 US gal, though a larger footprint — 120 × 17.5 in or more — becomes useful if tankmates are present or a pair is expected to breed. Being a lowland western-Amazon fish, it wants warm, soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral water: 73–86 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and low hardness matching the blackwater and clearwater streams of its Peruvian and Colombian homeland. Careful conditioning to harder or more alkaline tap water is possible over time, as the genus proves adaptable in captivity, but drifting beyond pH 7.5 or into genuinely hard water is best avoided. Filtration should provide gentle, well-oxygenated flow; heavy surge is inconsistent with the calm, silty habitats this fish naturally occupies.

The aquascape should prioritise the bottom: a sandy substrate covered in patches of dry leaf litter (Indian almond or oak leaves work well) is ideal and reflects the leaf-strewn stream beds where the species lives. Driftwood branches and roots provide cover and territory markers, and floating or fine-leaved plants can soften light. Critically for breeding, a supply of small, flat, movable objects — large smooth pebbles or intact dried leaves — should be present, as the pair will select one as its spawning surface and physically manoeuvre it around their territory. The tank does not need to be brightly lit; subdued conditions suit the fish's natural habitat and encourage more confident behaviour.

Outside of breeding condition, Bujurquina peregrinabunda is a peaceful, unassertive cichlid that coexists well with fish that share its soft-water needs and are too large to be eaten. In a western-Amazon community, appropriate companions include other small to medium Peruvian cichlids (small Apistogramma or Laetacara species at the bottom layer, or similarly-sized non-cichlid tetras in mid-water), along with corydoras catfish and small loricariids. Avoid slow, heavily-finnned fish that will be harassed, and avoid large or boisterous cichlids that will bully this comparatively docile species. When a pair is defending eggs or mouthbrooding, territory defence increases noticeably, so tankmates should either have enough space to stay clear or the breeding pair should be isolated in their own tank. The common keeper error with this and related Bujurquina is keeping it in hard, alkaline water more suited to Rift Lake cichlids — the fish survives but remains dull-coloured, shy, and unlikely to breed.

Breeding follows the unusual biparental delayed-mouthbrooding pattern that defines the genus. The pair courts and spawns on a chosen flat, movable surface — typically a leaf or a smooth stone — and may rearrange it several times before and after spawning, which is unusual behaviour to observe. After hatching, the wrigglers are taken into the mouths of both parents and brooded buccally until they reach the free-swimming stage, then the young continue to shelter inside the parents' mouths when startled. Sexing the pair before breeding is difficult given the species' weak dimorphism; keeping three or four juveniles together and allowing natural pairing is the most reliable approach. Brood sizes have not been published for this species specifically; based on the genus, expect a few dozen to perhaps one hundred and fifty or two hundred eggs. The fry are small and free-swimming before they are robust, so raising them on freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and fine powdered foods is advisable.

Overall difficulty is low to moderate for an experienced cichlid keeper who can provide soft, warm, slightly acidic water. The main challenges are sourcing correctly identified fish — the shipping confusion with similar species remains a real issue — and replicating the lowland soft-water chemistry that makes the species most at home. Given the rarity of the fish and the lack of a dedicated breeding community, any successful captive reproduction is worth documenting; the species has been bred only incidentally in the hobby, and even basic brood-size records would be a contribution.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina peregrinabunda as Least Concern (assessed 19 October 2020 by Henrique Rosa Varella; published in the current Red List), and it carries no CITES or CMS listing. The rationale is the one its name implies — a comparatively wide distribution across the central and western Amazon, spanning four countries, which buffers the species against the localised threats that imperil the genus's many narrow-range endemics. FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low and its resilience as medium. It has no targeted commercial fishery and only incidental presence in the ornamental trade, usually mixed in with shipments labelled as other Bujurquina or Aequidens. Against that reassuring species-level picture sits the broader strain on Amazonian freshwaters: a substantial body of work documents how deforestation, dam construction, mining and mercury contamination, sedimentation and altered flood-pulse regimes are degrading the basin's aquatic ecosystems, even as freshwater habitats remain comparatively under-protected in regional conservation planning. None of these is recorded as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but they are the backdrop against which a small lowland-stream specialist's long-term prospects should be read — and the many genuinely range-restricted, still-undescribed Bujurquina of the Andean foothills are far more exposed than this wanderer is.
