Chindongo demasoni is a dwarf mbuna from a tiny patch of the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi, a fish whose vivid alternating bars of electric blue and near-black make it instantly recognisable and perennially popular in the hobby. Described by Ad Konings in 1994 and moved in 2016 into the new genus Chindongo, it is unusual among mbuna in being sexually monomorphic — males and females wear the same striped livery — and notorious among aquarists for an intraspecific aggression so relentless that the standard advice is to keep it either as a single specimen or in a crowd of a dozen or more. What few keepers realise is that this temper is largely an artefact of the glass box: in the wild, at Pombo and Ndumbi reefs, the species is reported to be neither territorial nor aggressive toward its own kind.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the Dutch-born ichthyologist and Lake Malawi authority Ad (Adrianus F.) Konings in 1994, as Pseudotropheus demasoni, in volume 4 of The Cichlids Yearbook (Cichlid Press) — the original paper is titled, tellingly, "Pseudotropheus demasoni sp. nov.: a sexually monomorphic cichlid from the Tanzanian coast of Lake Malawi." Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the type locality as Pombo Rocks, Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa), Tanzania, with the holotype held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium, under register MRAC 94-12-P-1 (four paratypes, MRAC 94-12-P-2 to 94-12-P-5, accompany it). The species epithet honours Laif DeMason of Homestead, Florida, an American aquarist and cichlid importer who supplied Konings with the fish. In 2016 Shan Li, Konings and Jay R. Stauffer Jr. published a revision of the Pseudotropheus elongatus species group (Zootaxa 4168) that erected a new genus, Chindongo, with Chindongo bellicosus as its type species, and transferred ten former Pseudotropheus to it — among them demasoni — so the valid name is now Chindongo demasoni (Konings, 1994), the authority kept in parentheses to mark the change of genus. The name Chindongo is not Latin or Greek but a Chichewa (Malawian) word for a small, rock-dwelling fish; the genus is diagnosed by bicuspid teeth in the front of the outer tooth rows of both jaws, a small mouth, and a flank pattern of vertical bars with no horizontal stripe element at any age — the last feature separating it cleanly from Pseudotropheus proper, whose pattern is two longitudinal bands of spots. Chindongo demasoni sits within the lake's mbuna (rock-dwelling cichlid) radiation, one of fourteen recognised mbuna genera.

Morphology

This is a genuinely small mbuna. FishBase gives a maximum of 2.5 in standard length; the original description and the IUCN account put males at a total length of about 3 in, with females maturing at roughly 1.5 in and not exceeding about 2.5 in. Reports of "~2.5–3 in" in hobby sources refer to the usual adult size rather than the rare large male. The body is the typical elongate, laterally compressed mbuna shape, and the colour pattern is the species' signature: a base of pale to deep cobalt blue crossed by four to six bold dark (blue-black) vertical bars, the dark bands continuing onto the dorsal fin. The original description counts four dark bars below the dorsal fin — a quick field mark that separates demasoni from the similarly blue-barred male Chindongo saulosi, which shows five or six. The mouth is terminal with the upper jaw slightly protruding, carrying four to six tooth rows above and five to six below. The most-cited oddity is the lack of sexual dimorphism: unlike most mbuna, where males flush into a different palette at maturity, male and female demasoni keep essentially the same striped dress. Differences are subtle and unreliable — dominant males tend to be a little larger, more intensely coloured and longer-finned, and males carry yellow egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin that females generally lack — but experienced keepers note that venting or behaviour, not colour, is the only dependable way to sex them.

Habitat

Chindongo demasoni is endemic to Lake Malawi and, within that vast lake, to an extraordinarily small range: it is known only from Pombo Rocks and the nearby Ndumbi reefs, on the Tanzanian (north-eastern) coast just south of the Ruhuhu River delta. The IUCN estimates the area of occupancy at just 2 mi². It is a rock-dweller of the shallow littoral, occupying intermediate, stony and rocky substrate in the upper few metres — Konings records it from water not deeper than about seven metres, and the IUCN assessment notes it lives mainly in the upper 10–13 ft. The lake water it inhabits is warm, hard and strongly alkaline: Lake Malawi's surface layer runs roughly 75–82 °F seasonally with a pH usually between about 7.7 and 8.6, and conductivity/hardness high enough that aquarists routinely buffer with aragonite to mimic it (a keeper's in-tank log cited on the Cichlid Room Companion measured ~78 °F, pH 7.8–8.0 and hardness around 200 ppm). The geographically isolated, single-reef distribution is the central fact of this fish's biology: a naturally rare, narrow-range endemic whose entire wild population is confined to a few hundred metres of shoreline.

Feeding

Chindongo demasoni is an aufwuchs grazer — "aufwuchs" being the felt-like mat of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria and the tiny invertebrates that live among it, coating the rocks of the littoral zone. Konings describes the fish visually selecting feeding sites on algae-covered rock faces and large boulders, and the genus diagnosis characterises Chindongo as biting loose material (diatoms and cyanobacteria) from the algal matrix rather than combing or shearing it, feeding at a 30–60° angle to the substrate and favouring patches of lush growth. FishBase places it at a low trophic level of about 2.6, consistent with a near-herbivorous diet. This trophic role matters for keeping the fish well: like other algae-grazing mbuna it is built for a high-fibre, vegetable-dominated diet, and a protein-rich or meaty diet is a common cause of the bloat that kills captive mbuna. In aquaria it does best on spirulina- and algae-based foods, with animal protein offered only sparingly. Notably, the genus account stresses that Chindongo species generally defend their algal feeding grounds aggressively against other grazers — the ecological root of the family's reputation for pugnacity — yet demasoni itself is one of the exceptions reported as non-territorial in the wild.

Mating

Like virtually all mbuna, Chindongo demasoni is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no pair bond: a male courts and spawns with multiple females and provides no parental care. In most mbuna the male holds and vigorously defends a spawning territory, but here the wild picture is unusual. The IUCN assessment, drawing on Konings's field observations, states plainly that breeding or sexually territorial individuals have not been found in the lake, that the species does not defend territories, and that it is not aggressive toward conspecific males — and adds the curious detail that mouthbrooding females do not hide as much as one would expect for so small a fish. Courtship follows the haplochromine template: the male displays and leads a ripe female to a spawning site, she lays a small batch of eggs and takes them immediately into her mouth, and the male's egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin help draw her to nip at them and so take up milt, fertilising the clutch within her buccal cavity. The contrast between this placid wild behaviour and the savage intraspecific fighting seen in tanks is one of the most instructive things about the species: confinement, not biology, manufactures most of the aggression.

Breeding

Reproduction is maternal mouthbrooding. After spawning, the female alone broods the eggs and developing larvae in her mouth, fasting through much of the period, and releases free-swimming fry after roughly two to three weeks (hobby reports cluster around 14–21 days before release). Clutches are small, in keeping with the fish's size — a few dozen eggs at most, often fewer for younger females. No detailed wild breeding study exists; the species has, however, been bred freely in aquaria, where keepers describe spawns triggered by water changes or by leaving the group undisturbed. A frequently reported aquarium observation, recorded on the Cichlid Room Companion, is that holding females become territorial around a chosen cave and defend it against other females — a flicker of the territoriality the wild fish otherwise lacks. Fry are robust and need no special care beyond fine foods and cover; in a well-rocked tank a few will survive to recruit even without removal of the brooding female. Maturity comes early and at a small size (females from about 1.5 in), and generation length is short — the IUCN gives roughly one year — which is part of why captive populations build quickly once a stable group is established.

In the aquarium

Chindongo demasoni is one of the most commonly kept dwarf mbuna in the hobby, which is easy to understand — it is small, boldly coloured, readily available as a tank-bred fish, and breeds without fuss. It is not, however, an easy fish in any meaningful sense. The dominant challenge is intraspecific aggression. In a confined space a dominant male will pursue and eventually kill subordinate males and sexually mature females alike, and the standard keeper advice — widely repeated and genuinely supported by practice — is to keep the species either as a solitary specimen or in a large group of twelve or more. The logic of the crowd is that with many individuals present, no single fish can be isolated and relentlessly targeted. A trio or a half-dozen is usually the worst option: small enough that one fish receives a disproportionate share of the chasing, large enough that there is always a victim in view. A species-only tank, or a mixed mbuna community stocked densely enough that territory is impossible to establish cleanly, works considerably better than mixed small groups.

Tank size should match the aggression load. Most experienced keepers recommend a minimum of around 55–80 US gal for a group of twelve, with a longer footprint favoured over a tall one — the fish lives in the upper few metres of a shallow rocky shore, and horizontal swimming space matters more than depth. Filtration should be robust, because the alkaline, hard water that the fish requires also tends to support bacterial blooms if organics build up. Lake Malawi chemistry is non-negotiable: pH in the range of roughly 7.8–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F, and water that is genuinely hard rather than soft or neutral. Many keepers use aragonite gravel or crushed coral as substrate, which buffers pH passively; this also approximates the pale, sandy-between-rocks substrate of the actual reef habitat. Soft acidic water will dull colour, suppress spawning, and stress the fish over time.

Decoration should be dominated by rockwork — stacked limestone, slate, or similar inert rock arranged to create many caves, crevices, and line-of-sight breaks. The more visual barriers the keeper provides, the less any single fish can establish a clear overview of the whole tank, and aggression typically drops noticeably in a heavily rocked tank compared to an open one. Live plants are largely incompatible with Lake Malawi chemistry and are not part of this species' natural environment; artificial plants, if any, are fine but unnecessary. Sand or fine gravel between the rock piles is appropriate.

Diet is the other most commonly mismanaged aspect of this species. Chindongo demasoni is an aufwuchs grazer adapted to a high-fibre, near-herbivorous diet, and feeding it the meaty or high-protein foods appropriate for a predatory cichlid is a reliable path to Malawi bloat — a poorly understood but frequently fatal digestive syndrome seen most often in mbuna kept on protein-rich diets. The diet should be built around spirulina-based flakes or pellets, blanched vegetables, and algae; animal protein (bloodworms, brine shrimp, high-meat pellets) should be a minor treat at most, not a staple. A gut that evolved to process algae and diatoms does not handle large quantities of animal protein well, and the consequences tend to appear slowly and then catastrophically.

Breeding in the aquarium is straightforward once a stable group is established. Females brood for roughly two to three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry; clutches are small, typically a few dozen, and the fry are robust enough to be raised in the main tank if sufficient rock cover is present. Brooding females benefit from being moved to a quiet holding tank near the end of the brood cycle if the keeper wants to maximise survival, but this is not essential in a well-furnished tank. As with all mbuna, the sexually monomorphic colouration of demasoni means that venting is the only reliable way to sex adults; attempting to assemble a gender-specific group by colour alone will generally produce a tank skewed toward males, which amplifies aggression further. Difficulty overall is intermediate: the water chemistry and dietary requirements are specific and unforgiving of shortcuts, and the group-size management demands some planning, but the fish itself is hardy and long-lived when its requirements are met.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Chindongo demasoni as Vulnerable (criteria D1+2), last assessed on 22 May 2018 by Kazembe and Konings (errata version published 2019; the species had also been listed Vulnerable in 2006 and 2017 under the name Pseudotropheus demasoni). The rationale is its extreme range restriction rather than any documented decline: the wild population is estimated at only 500–1,000 mature individuals across the Pombo and Ndumbi reefs, an area of occupancy of about 2 mi² treated as a single location, with the principal threats being sedimentation (from soil erosion and agricultural run-off washing into the shallow rocky habitat) and over-collection for the ornamental fish trade. The assessment notes the species is in fact only rarely taken by collectors, which has likely spared it the worst — and because the demasoni in the trade are now overwhelmingly tank-bred, ongoing wild collection pressure is modest. Even so, a fish whose entire global range is a few hundred metres of shoreline is intrinsically exposed: a single sedimentation event, a localised collection push, or shoreline disturbance could affect a meaningful fraction of the population. That vulnerability sits within a lake under broad strain. Lake Malawi holds one of the richest freshwater fish faunas on Earth — well over 800 cichlid species — and a basin-scale review by Chavula and colleagues (2023) documents intensifying sediment and nutrient loading, shoreline degradation, surface warming and reduced mixing, alongside heavy inshore fishing. For a shallow rocky-shore endemic with nowhere else to go, sedimentation in particular is exactly the pressure that bears hardest. The species has, ironically, no scarcity in captivity: it is one of the most widely bred dwarf mbuna in the hobby, which both insulates the wild stock from collection demand and makes the captive line the de facto refuge for a fish that barely exists in nature.
