Cichlasoma pusillum is one of the smallest members of the South American genus Cichlasoma, a drab little grey acara that rarely exceeds 3 in and is known with certainty only from tributaries of the upper Paraná River in eastern Paraguay. Described by Sven Kullander in his landmark 1983 revision of the genus, it is a close relative of the familiar 'port' cichlids Cichlasoma portalegrense and Cichlasoma dimerus, separated from them largely on geography and on a single bold dark spot beneath the eye. A subtropical, room-temperature fish of warm, weedy lowland waters, it is a peaceful biparental open-spawner that has never been a star of the hobby but turns up sporadically among imported 'ports' and as European tank-bred stock.

Taxonomy & naming

Cichlasoma pusillum was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1983, in his monograph 'A revision of the South American cichlid genus Cichlasoma', on the basis of preserved material. The holotype (MHNG 2131.94) came from Puerto Palma in the Río Alto Paraná system of Alto Paraná department, Paraguay, with paratypes lodged at the Natural History Museum in London (BMNH), the Field Museum (FMNH) and Geneva (MHNG). The name has remained valid and unchallenged in every subsequent checklist (Kullander in Reis et al. 2003; Ottoni 2011; Bertaco et al. 2016; Koerber et al. 2017). Kullander's 1983 revision was a watershed: he stripped the bloated old catch-all genus Cichlasoma down to a tight South American core of medium-sized 'acaras' and, in the process, erected eight new species and brought the genus to twelve. Within that core, Cichlasoma pusillum belongs to a tightly knit trio of three-hard-anal-spined 'port' cichlids together with Cichlasoma portalegrense (Hensel, 1870) and Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840); the three are so similar in body proportions and preserved coloration that Kullander leaned heavily on geography to separate them, and at least one contemporary reviewer (writing in the American Cichlid Association's Buntbarsche Bulletin) argued they might as easily have been treated as geographic races of one variable species. The trivial name has a double meaning that Kullander himself flagged: pusillus is Latin for 'very small' — a reference to its diminutive size next to its congeners — while the first two letters, P and U, double as an allusion to the Paraná and Uruguay drainages from which he then believed it came.

Morphology

This is a small, plainly coloured cichlid. Kullander had no specimen larger than 3 in standard length, and the great majority of his material — and of the fish that reach the trade — sit around 2.5 in SL, making Cichlasoma pusillum markedly smaller than the 4.5 in-plus Cichlasoma portalegrense and Cichlasoma dimerus, let alone the 8 in bulk of other Cichlasoma. The body is the typical 'acara' shape: moderately deep and laterally compressed, but distinctly slimmer and less robust than its two close relatives, with three hard rays in the anal fin. Ground colour is grey, overlaid in life with a modest sheen rather than the strong opalescent blue-green that lights up living Cichlasoma dimerus. The marking pattern, shared in outline across the trio, comprises a dark blotch in the middle of each flank, a second blotch on the caudal peduncle (sometimes ringed in pale grey), and a dark antero-lateral band running back from the eye toward the mid-body spot. Two features help pick Cichlasoma pusillum out: it tends to show that antero-lateral band more strongly, and — the most reliable single field character — it carries a conspicuous large dark spot below the eye, on the cheek/suborbital, often with extra scattered dark spots on the gill cover, which the other two species lack. It also lacks the dark reticulated, oblique-striped pattern on the upper caudal lobe and soft fins seen in portalegrense and dimerus. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus's understated pattern: the sexes are similar, with males growing somewhat larger and ripe females becoming visibly rounder in the belly when in spawning condition; there is no dramatic difference in fin shape or colour.

Habitat

Cichlasoma pusillum is a fish of the subtropical lowlands of the Río de la Plata system. Its original description and early checklists implied a wide range across both the Paraná and Uruguay drainages, but Kullander's 2003 reassessment and the FishBase taxonomic remark both conclude that the specimens once attributed to it from the Uruguay River do not belong to this species. The confirmed, validated range is therefore much smaller: tributaries of the upper (Alto) Paraná River in eastern Paraguay, with the Acaray River — a Paraná tributary near Ciudad del Este — repeatedly cited as a locality. The IUCN puts its extent of occurrence at under 10,0 mi², across just two threat-based locations. These are warm, weedy, slow-moving habitats classed as inland wetlands: lowland river margins, backwaters and vegetated floodplain pools of a region with hot summers and cool winters. No detailed in-situ water chemistry has been published for the species, but it shares its waters with the broadly distributed 'port' cichlids of the Paraguay-Paraná, which inhabit soft to moderately mineralised, near-neutral water; the genus as a whole is tolerant of a wide chemical envelope. Being subtropical rather than equatorial, these fish experience a real seasonal temperature swing, and aquarium experience bears this out — outside the breeding season they are comfortable at ordinary room temperatures (around 64–72 °F), a clue to the cool-winter waters they come from.

Feeding

Like its 'port' relatives, Cichlasoma pusillum is a generalist omnivore rather than a specialist of any one feeding mode. No published gut-content study exists for this particular species, but its small size, unspecialised dentition and the well-documented habits of the closely related Cichlasoma dimerus and Cichlasoma portalegrense point to a diet of small benthic invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, detritus and plant and algal material picked from the substrate and from vegetation in slow lowland water. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.0, squarely in the omnivore range. In the aquarium it is reported as a wholly unfussy feeder that takes prepared and live foods without difficulty. In its native community it functions as a small, low-level forager of the weedy littoral, neither a notable predator nor a dedicated substrate-sifter of the kind seen among the eartheaters.

Mating

Detailed courtship has not been described for Cichlasoma pusillum specifically, but the genus Cichlasoma is uniformly composed of monogamous, biparental open spawners, and the behaviour of the closely studied Cichlasoma dimerus — a standard laboratory model for South American cichlid reproduction — is the best available guide to what this species does. Pairs form from a group and establish a defended territory centred on a spawning surface. Courtship runs through the familiar cichlid repertoire of lateral displays, fin-spreading, mutual circling and substrate-cleaning, with both partners taking part. By the standards of the genus these are relatively mild-mannered fish: aquarium accounts describe Cichlasoma pusillum as pleasant in temperament and not given to the heavy digging or sustained aggression of the Central American 'cichlasomines' to which the genus name was once misapplied. Territorial defence intensifies around spawning, when a pair will hold a patch of bottom against tankmates, but the species is not noted as a serious aggressor outside that window.

Breeding

Cichlasoma pusillum is a biparental substrate (open) spawner — the reproductive mode shared by every member of the genus. The pair cleans a firm surface such as a flat stone, a root or a broad leaf, and the female lays a sheet of adhesive eggs on it which both parents then guard and fan; after hatching, the wrigglers are typically moved to pits in the substrate and the free-swimming fry are shepherded and defended by both parents as a biparental family. No clutch count specific to this species has been published; for a small Cichlasoma of this size a few hundred eggs per spawning is the genus-typical expectation, and the closely related, similarly sized Cichlasoma dimerus routinely produces clutches on that order under aquarium conditions. Spawning has been achieved in captivity — the species has reached the trade as European tank-bred stock — and breeders report it as undemanding, with ordinary tap water suitable for both maintenance and reproduction. As a subtropical fish, a seasonal cue may help trigger spawning: keeping the fish cool over winter and then warming the tank in spring mimics the temperature cycle of its homeland.

In the aquarium

Cichlasoma pusillum has never been a mainstream aquarium fish. It is not colourful — a grey 'port' with dark spots — and it reaches the hobby only intermittently, either as a contaminant among shipments of the better-known Cichlasoma portalegrense and Cichlasoma dimerus or, more recently, as deliberately tank-bred European stock offered to the wholesale trade. For keepers who do encounter it, it is an easy and rewarding small cichlid. Because it stays around 2.5–3 in, a single pair can be housed in a modest tank of roughly 20 US gal, and a 120-litre/30-gallon aquarium is comfortable for a small group from which a pair can form.

The single most useful thing to know about this fish is that it is an 'energy-saving' species: outside the breeding season it thrives at ordinary room temperature, around 64–72 °F, and needs no aquarium heater at all in a normally heated home. This reflects the cool-winter, subtropical waters of its upper-Paraná home, and a year-round tropical 81 °F is neither necessary nor ideal. A modest seasonal swing — cooler in winter, warmer in spring — suits it and can prompt breeding. Water chemistry is essentially a non-issue: it is reported to breed and thrive in any ordinary tap water, soft or hard, acidic or alkaline, so there is no need to chase specific pH or hardness targets.

Furnish the tank as a quiet, weedy lowland biotope: a soft sand or fine-gravel bottom, driftwood and roots for cover, some sturdy or potted plants (it does not dig destructively or shred vegetation the way larger Central American cichlids do), and a few flat stones or broad leaves as potential spawning sites. Filtration should be gentle to moderate; these are fish of slow water and do not want a strong current. Feeding is trouble-free — a varied diet of quality flake or small sinking pellets supplemented with live or frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp keeps them in good condition. Temperamentally they are peaceful for a cichlid and combine well with similarly sized, non-aggressive subtropical South Americans and robust characins, becoming territorial only around a spawn. The chief pitfall is simply misidentification: a 'pusillum' bought from a mixed import may well be a juvenile Cichlasoma dimerus or Cichlasoma portalegrense instead, and these are notoriously hard to tell apart without locality data — the large suborbital spot is the most practical check.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Cichlasoma pusillum as Vulnerable (assessed 31 July 2023 by H.S. Vera-Alcaraz and E. Fernando; criteria B1ab(iii) and D2). The listing rests on the species' very small validated range — an extent of occurrence of about 9,473 mi² confined to upper-Paraná tributaries in eastern Paraguay — distributed across only two threat-based locations, where the assessors document a continuing decline in habitat quality. The threats they identify are the large hydroelectric dams of the upper Paraná (the region holds the Itaipú and Acaray impoundments, which transform river habitat), expansion of cattle ranching and agriculture, and urbanisation. Because the range is so restricted, the assessment warns the species could deteriorate to Critically Endangered or be lost within a short time if these pressures intensify, and it flags that the fish's taxonomy, population, ecology and threats all need further research. The population trend is recorded as Unknown, it occurs in no confirmed protected area, and it carries no CITES listing. It is taken for the aquarium trade, as most cichlids are, but the trade is not identified as a population-level threat; the dominant pressures are habitat alteration in a small, heavily developed corner of the Río de la Plata basin.
