Crenicichla ypo is a slender pike cichlid endemic to a single small river system in north-eastern Argentina — the arroyo Urugua-í, a left-bank tributary of the middle Paraná in Misiones province. Described in 2010 by Jorge Casciotta and colleagues, it belongs to the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex, a tight radiation of Paraná pikes confined to the waterfall-isolated streams of Misiones. Its most reliable field mark is on the female: a wide black band running the length of the upper dorsal fin with an equally wide red band beneath it. Cut off from the main river by waterfalls and now overprinted by a hydroelectric reservoir that flooded much of its original range, Crenicichla ypo is one of the more geographically restricted pikes in the genus, and the IUCN lists it as Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenicichla ypo was described in 2010 by Jorge R. Casciotta, Adriana E. Almirón, Lubomír Piálek, Sergio E. Gómez and Oldřich Říčan, in Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 8, issue 3, pages 643–648). The holotype, an adult of 4 in standard length collected at the Establecimiento "Alto Paraná" on the arroyo Urugua-í in February 1986, is held at the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales as MACN-ict 9431, with a paratype series of more than a dozen specimens spread across the same and neighbouring streams. The name has remained valid and uncontested in every subsequent treatment, including the Catalog of Fishes. Within Crenicichla — by far the largest genus of Neotropical cichlids, with roughly 90 valid species — Crenicichla ypo is a member of the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex, an assemblage of small to mid-sized pikes endemic to the middle Paraná drainage in Misiones. The describers showed, on both morphology and mitochondrial sequence data (ND2 and cytochrome b), that ypo aligns with the Paraná pikes rather than with the superficially similar species of the neighbouring Uruguay River, which form the separate Crenicichla missioneira and Crenicichla scottii groups. The 2023 generic revision of the pike cichlids by Bárbara Calegari, Sven Kullander and colleagues (working from Willian Varella's earlier phylogeny) split several peripheral lineages into new genera but retained the mandelburgeri complex, and ypo with it, inside Crenicichla in the strict sense — so the genus name stands.

Morphology

Crenicichla ypo is a typically elongate pike cichlid, the body depth contained 4.2 to 4.8 times in the standard length, with a short, bluntly pointed snout and a lower jaw that projects very slightly beyond the upper. The largest measured specimens reach about 5.5 in in standard length, so this is a modest-sized pike by the standards of a genus that runs from dwarf to half-metre species. The fins follow the genus plan — a long dorsal of XX–XXII spines and 10–12 soft rays, three anal spines, and a rounded caudal. The describers diagnosed the species by a combination of characters: 6 to 8 irregular dark blotches arranged along the upper lateral line (rather than continuous vertical bars or a clean lateral stripe), the absence of the scattered dark flank speckling seen in its relatives Crenicichla iguassuensis and Crenicichla tesay, a comparatively low count of 47–55 scales in the E1 row, and the slightly prognathous lower jaw. The ground colour is grey, with a black, fragmented suborbital stripe dropping from the eye almost to the lower edge of the cheek, and a distinct dark subcircular blotch — sometimes ringed in white — on the upper caudal fin. Sexual dimorphism is clear in adults: males carry numerous small dark spots scattered across the dorsal, anal and caudal fins and often a few orange flecks on the flank behind the pectoral, while females largely lack the body spotting but develop a striking dorsal-fin signal — a wide black longitudinal band along the upper (distal) part of the fin with an equally wide red band immediately below it, set off by yellow-and-orange wash on the lower flank. This female dorsal pattern is the single most useful feature for separating ypo from its sympatric congener Crenicichla yaha, whose females show a wide but irregular black dorsal stripe without the clean red band.

Habitat

The species is known only from the arroyo Urugua-í basin, a left-bank tributary that drains roughly 3,0 mi² of the northern part of Misiones province before joining the middle Paraná River. This is subtropical, not tropical Amazonian, water — Misiones sits at the meeting point of the Paraná, Uruguay and Iguazú drainages, and its tributaries are famously cut off from the main rivers by a series of waterfalls near their mouths, an isolation long enough to have driven a high level of fish endemism. The original collections describe the Urugua-í, away from the dam's influence, as a moderately fast-flowing stream with an average depth around 3 ft, a bottom of mud, sand-with-gravel and exposed bedrock, and stands of aquatic macrophytes (Echinodorus uruguayensis and Potamogeton). The defining feature of the species' modern range, however, is the Urugua-í hydroelectric dam, completed in 1989, which flooded a long reach of the river — including some of the type localities, such as Isla Palacio, now beneath the surface — and created an impoundment up to about 20 ft deep. Crenicichla ypo was collected both before and after the dam and has persisted, occurring today in the riverine reaches and directly within the reservoir itself. No in-situ pH or temperature series was published with the description; values stored here are genus-typical for clear, moderately mineralised subtropical Paraná tributaries (near-neutral pH, water temperatures cycling roughly between the high teens in winter and the high twenties in summer). It is sympatric with Crenicichla yaha and at least one further, undetermined Crenicichla in the same basin.

Feeding

No gut-content study has been published for Crenicichla ypo, so its diet is inferred from its anatomy and from its many close relatives. Pike cichlids as a group are ambush carnivores: an elongate body, a large mouth and a slightly projecting jaw are the tools of a fish that lies among rocks, submerged wood or marginal vegetation and lunges at passing prey. The dentition described for ypo — outer rows of conical, slightly movable teeth in both jaws over several inner rows, and crushing bicuspid teeth on the lower pharyngeal plate — fits a generalist predator that takes small fishes together with aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates rather than a strict piscivore. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a mid-level invertebrate-and-fish feeder rather than an apex fish-eater. Within the mandelburgeri complex the species are known to partition along an elongate-piscivore versus stockier-generalist axis; ypo, with its moderate proportions and slightly prognathous jaw, sits toward the generalist end of that spectrum.

Mating

The courtship and pair behaviour of Crenicichla ypo have not been observed or reported — the species has essentially no aquarium history and was described from preserved museum material rather than from living, breeding fish. What can be said comes from the wider genus, which is remarkably consistent in its reproductive biology. Pike cichlids form monogamous pairs and are biparental: a male and female establish and jointly defend a territory around a chosen spawning site, typically a crevice or cave among rocks or wood. The marked sexual dichromatism of ypo — the male's spotted fins and the female's bold black-over-red dorsal banner — is the kind of close-range signalling used across Crenicichla in pair formation and sex recognition, and the female's heightened colour is consistent with the female-led courtship displays documented in better-studied congeners. Beyond that general pattern, the specifics of pairing in this particular species remain undocumented.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented in Crenicichla ypo, in the wild or in captivity. The genus is uniformly composed of biparental substrate and cave spawners: the pair clean a sheltered surface — the roof or wall of a rock crevice, a hollow under wood, or an excavated cavity — and the female lays a clutch of adhesive eggs there, which she tends and fans while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory. After hatching, the wrigglers are moved to pits and then guarded as a free-swimming school by both parents until they disperse. Clutch sizes in comparably sized pike cichlids run on the order of a few hundred eggs; in the absence of any species-specific count, roughly 100–300 eggs is a reasonable genus-typical figure for a fish of this size, offered here only as an estimate. None of the spawning triggers, egg counts, incubation times or fry-development data have been recorded for ypo specifically, and any account of its breeding would have to be extrapolated from its relatives.

In the aquarium

Crenicichla ypo is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It has no established presence in the hobby or the ornamental trade, it is endemic to a single small and now dammed Argentine basin, and it carries an Endangered listing — none of which makes it a candidate for casual keeping, and wild collection for the aquarium would be irresponsible given its conservation status. The notes that follow are therefore generic husbandry for a subtropical pike of this size, not a record of anyone keeping this species.

A pike of around 5.5 in needs a long tank rather than a tall one — on the order of 47 in of length for a single fish or a compatible pair — with a sand or fine-gravel bottom and a structured aquascape of rock piles, caves and driftwood that breaks the floor into defensible territories and gives subordinate fish places to retreat. As a fish of moderately flowing, well-oxygenated Paraná tributaries it would want clean, current-bearing water, strong filtration and regular water changes. Being subtropical rather than tropical, it would suit cooler temperatures than an Amazonian cichlid — broadly the high teens to high twenties Celsius, ideally with a seasonal dip — at a near-neutral pH and moderate hardness. Diet would be carnivorous: meaty frozen and live foods such as earthworms, prawn, mussel and the larger insect larvae, with many pikes learning to accept sinking pellets over time. As with the genus generally, the realistic risks are intraspecific and predatory aggression around spawning, and the swallowing of any tankmate small enough to fit the mouth; companions, if any, should be robust, similarly-sized and given room to stay clear.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla ypo as Endangered (criterion B1ab(iii)), assessed on 22 November 2020 by Jorge Liotta and published in 2022. The listing rests on the species' extreme geographic restriction: it is known only from the arroyo Urugua-í basin, with an extent of occurrence of about 3,122 mi², a single location whose habitat quality is judged to be in decline. The population trend is recorded as unknown. The threats identified are those bearing on that one small basin — the Urugua-í hydroelectric dam and its altered flow and impoundment, fishing and harvesting of aquatic resources, wood-and-pulp plantations and the associated forestry and agricultural effluents draining into the catchment, and invasive non-native species. The species is not listed under CITES. The deeper context is the hydrography of Misiones itself: the same waterfalls that isolated these tributaries and allowed an endemic pike like ypo to evolve also leave it with nowhere to go, so that a basin-scale disturbance — above all the dam that has already reshaped its river — falls on the entire global range of the species at once. Its survival within the reservoir is encouraging, but a single-basin endemic with a degrading habitat has very little margin.
