Crenicichla yaha is a snail-eating pike cichlid endemic to a single subtropical river — the arroyo Urugua-í — in Misiones, north-eastern Argentina. Described in 2006 from just nine specimens netted before a hydroelectric dam flooded much of its home, it went uncollected for the next thirty years and was widely feared lost, until a 2016 expedition rediscovered it in the river's surviving rocky pools. It belongs to the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species flock of the Middle Paraná, a tight radiation of pike cichlids that has repeatedly split into long-jawed predators, generalists and heavy-headed molluscivores; yaha is the stoutest of the three molluscivores, built around a robust crushing jaw for the snails it specializes on. Its name is Guaraní for 'waterfall', for the 28-metre falls that once guarded the river it lives in.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenicichla yaha was described in 2006 by the Argentine ichthyologists Jorge R. Casciotta, Adriana E. Almirón and Sara E. Gómez, in the German journal Zoologische Abhandlungen (vol. 56, pp. 107–112), under the original combination Crenicichla yaha. The holotype — a 4 in standard-length specimen catalogued as MACN-ict 8924 in the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales — was collected in the arroyo Urugua-í at Isla Palacio, Misiones Province, Argentina. The entire type series comprised only nine fish, all taken in 1986 during an environmental-impact survey carried out before the Urugua-í hydroelectric dam was built in 1989. The species' stated range at description, 'the río Iguazú and arroyo Urugua-í basins', proved partly mistaken: a later reappraisal showed that the supposed Iguazú specimens actually belonged to a separate species, Crenicichla tesay, and that true Crenicichla yaha is endemic to the Urugua-í basin alone. The original description also miscalled the fish a non-molluscivore, an error traced to its having been diagnosed in part from a juvenile that had not yet developed the adult crushing jaw.

Within the genus, Crenicichla yaha belongs to the Crenicichla mandelburgeri species complex, one of two great species flocks (the other being the Crenicichla missioneira complex of the Uruguay River) inside the larger Crenicichla lacustris species group — the monophyletic 'southern' clade of pike cichlids restricted to subtropical South America east of the Andes and outside the Amazon. The mandelburgeri flock is endemic to the Middle Paraná and its tributaries including the Iguazú, and most of its species were undescribed or unknown when yaha was named in 2006, so the original diagnosis never compared it with its true closest relatives. That gap was filled by Piálek et al. (2015), who redescribed Crenicichla iguassuensis, Crenicichla tesay and Crenicichla yaha together, and by Říčan, Almirón & Casciotta (2017), who formally announced the species' rediscovery and rediagnosed it from living fish. Within the flock, yaha is one of three molluscivorous species — with Crenicichla tesay of the Iguazú and Crenicichla taikyra of the lowermost Middle Paraná — though it uniquely shares several traits (H-shaped flank blotches, an orange breeding-female flank, the fewest scale rows) with its sympatric neighbour Crenicichla ypo, leaving its exact branch unsettled pending nuclear phylogenomics. Varella's 2023 generic revision of the pike cichlids split the saxatilis-group species into the resurrected genus Saxatilia but kept the entire southern lacustris group — and thus the mandelburgeri flock and Crenicichla yaha — within Crenicichla, so the name stands. No common name is established for the fish in the hobby or trade.

Morphology

Crenicichla yaha is a small-to-medium pike cichlid, reaching about 5.5 in standard length (FishBase); the original type series ran from roughly 1.5 in (juveniles) to 5.5 in SL, and the rediscovery fish included adults to 5 in SL. Its body is the elongate, cylindrical, slightly compressed shape typical of the genus, but yaha is the most robust of its complex's three molluscivores — it has the deepest head and body and the widest interorbital of the trio, the signature build of a snail-crusher. The mouth is subterminal (hypognathous), the jaws short, and the lower pharyngeal jaw stout and armed with molariform teeth along its midline and rear edge for grinding shells. Fin counts run to 20–22 dorsal spines with 10–11 soft rays, three anal spines with 7–8 soft rays, and 35 vertebrae; the preopercle has a serrated posterior margin, and the E1 scale row (just above the lower lateral line) carries only 48–51 scales — the lowest count among the molluscivores, reflecting its large scales.

The live coloration, unknown until the 2016 rediscovery because the type material had faded in preservative, is the most reliable way to tell yaha from its look-alikes. The head and upper back are brownish (warming to orange in breeding females), contrasting with paler greyish-white flanks and belly. Five or six dark, distinctly H-shaped blotches run along the upper flank below the dorsal-fin base, each continuing upward as a pair of faint double bars; vertical body stripes are absent. A well-developed suborbital stripe marks the cheek as a neat horizontal series of equally sized, evenly spaced spots. Crucially, yaha lacks the scattered black body spots that both sexes of the similar Crenicichla tesay always carry. Sexual dimorphism is clear: males have a spotted dorsal fin, while breeding females develop a striking black white-margined elongate spot in the dorsal fin, an orange diffuse band along the lower flank beneath the blotches, and an orange branchiostegal (throat) membrane — the orange flank shared with sympatric Crenicichla ypo, but the orange throat unique to yaha among its neighbours.

Habitat

Crenicichla yaha is a narrow-range endemic confined to the basin of the arroyo Urugua-í, a tributary on the Argentine (Misiones) side of the Middle Paraná River, above the river's original 28-metre waterfall — the falls that gave the fish its name. These are warm, clear subtropical streams of the Atlantic Forest of Misiones. The species is decidedly habitat-specific: it occurs only in the middle stretches of the main channel and its principal tributary, the arroyo Falso Urugua-í, over hard bottoms of stones, boulders and exposed bedrock, and it has been collected exclusively in pools rather than in shallow running riffles. It is conspicuously absent from the muddy-bottomed artificial reservoir (Lago Urugua-í) created by the dam, where its specialized prey is gone and where its habitat no longer exists; it is likewise absent from the headwaters and small tributaries. In the surviving rocky pools it lives alongside the much more abundant generalist Crenicichla ypo and, rarely, an undescribed predatory pike cichlid, occurring at roughly one yaha to every ten to thirty Crenicichla ypo.

The original description and the rediscovery paper report no in-situ measurements of temperature, pH or conductivity at the collecting sites, and FishBase classes the species simply as freshwater, benthopelagic and subtropical. Like most fishes of these moderately soft, near-neutral Paraná-basin waters it can be expected at roughly 64–81 °F and a pH near 6.5–7.5, but for this species those figures are inferred from the regional setting rather than directly published. No depth range has been formally recorded; as a pool-dwelling fish of a small-to-medium rocky river it lives in the shallow band of a few metres or less.

Feeding

Crenicichla yaha is a specialized molluscivore — a snail-eater — and its anatomy is built for the job. The rediscovery paper diagnoses it by a robust, deep head with short jaws and a subterminal (hypognathous) mouth, and above all by a stout lower pharyngeal jaw bearing molariform (flat, crushing) teeth along the midline and rear edge: the classic shell-grinding mill. Of the three molluscivores in the mandelburgeri complex, yaha is the most robust of all in both head and body, the heavy end of the ecomorphological spectrum that this flock has evolved repeatedly. Its documented prey is the small operculate snail Potamolithus, which it crushes and processes with the pharyngeal mill. Tellingly, that snail is scarce in the Urugua-í's rocky stretches and absent from the muddy reservoir — a likely reason yaha is so rare and so restricted compared with the generalist Crenicichla ypo that thrives throughout the same basin. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.3. (The fish was originally described as a non-molluscivore, but that was an artefact of examining a juvenile whose crushing jaw had not yet formed; adult dissections settled the matter.) In the community, yaha occupies the snail-crushing niche, dividing the river's food resources with its generalist and predatory neighbours.

Mating

Little has been published on courtship or pair formation in Crenicichla yaha specifically, but the rediscovery of live fish revealed exactly the kind of signalling these pike cichlids use to find and recognize mates. Breeding females develop a vivid, species-specific dress — a black white-margined elongate spot in the dorsal fin, an orange diffuse band along the lower flank, and an orange branchiostegal membrane at the throat. The authors note that the dorsal-fin pattern differs sharply from that of the sympatric Crenicichla ypo (where the dorsal carries an orange band below a black band, without the white margin), and argue that this contrast functions in sexual selection and species recognition between two closely related pike cichlids that share the same pools — evidence of long-term coexistence. Pike cichlids of the lacustris group are territorial, biparental fish that pair off and defend a breeding site, and the rediscovery team explicitly noted that yaha, like its relatives, becomes territorial and harder to net during the breeding season. Beyond these signals and the species' territoriality, the details of its pair formation in the wild remain undocumented.

Breeding

Breeding has not been directly documented for Crenicichla yaha, either in the wild or in captivity; the species is known only from preserved specimens and tissue samples, and the closest thing to a reproductive observation is the breeding coloration of females captured in December 2016. Its reproductive biology can therefore only be inferred from its close relatives. Pike cichlids of the Crenicichla lacustris group, to which yaha belongs, are biparental substrate and cave spawners: a pair cleans a sheltered surface — a crevice, the underside of a stone, or a cavity among the boulders that floor its rocky pools — and lays an adhesive clutch that both parents guard and tend, the female typically staying close to fan the eggs while the male patrols the surrounding territory. Reported clutches for small-to-medium congeners run on the order of a few hundred eggs; in the absence of any direct count for yaha, a genus-typical figure of roughly 100–300 eggs is the best available estimate. The conspicuous breeding dress of females — the white-margined dorsal spot and orange flank and throat — points to the usual cichlid pattern of intense, signalled parental care. Spawning triggers, egg and larval development, and the duration of care all remain unstudied in this species. That the fish was collected in December (early austral summer) in reproductive condition suggests, as in many subtropical Paraná cichlids, a warm-season spawning peak.

In the aquarium

Crenicichla yaha is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is one of the rarest and most range-restricted pike cichlids known — an endemic of a single dammed Argentine river, never offered in the ornamental trade and, as far as published records go, never kept or bred in captivity. Anyone encountering the name in a hobby context should be sceptical, because the mandelburgeri complex is notoriously hard to identify on sight: even specialists separate yaha from its neighbours mainly on the H-shaped flank blotches, the unspotted body, the robust crushing head, low scale counts, and the orange-throated breeding female. Much of what has historically circulated under the name 'Crenicichla yaha' has in fact been the spotted-bodied Crenicichla tesay.

If the species ever did reach aquarists, sensible husbandry would follow what suits its small, rock-dwelling, snail-eating congeners from the subtropical Paraná. That means a long tank with a hard floor and plentiful stone and boulder structure to provide defensible caves and broken sight-lines, gentle to moderate flow, and well-oxygenated soft-to-neutral water around 68–79 °F — these are pool fish of clear rocky streams, not warm sluggish lowlands. As a molluscivore it would want a diet rich in snails and other hard-shelled and meaty invertebrates to keep its crushing jaw working, supplemented with sinking foods. Being a territorial cichlid only about 5.5–6 in long, it would need a single pair or a carefully matched group in a spacious, well-structured tank, kept away from much larger or more aggressive cichlids, and given the same caution around the breeding season — when pike cichlids of this group turn pointedly territorial — that any of its relatives demand. For now, though, this is a fish of the river and the museum drawer, not the home aquarium.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla yaha as Least Concern (assessed 18 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). It carries no CITES or CMS listing. The Least Concern rating sits somewhat uneasily against the species' actual biology, because yaha is by any measure a vulnerable fish: it is endemic to a single small river, it is genuinely rare even there (outnumbered roughly ten-to-thirty-to-one by the generalist Crenicichla ypo), and it has already lost much of its habitat. The construction of the Urugua-í hydroelectric dam in 1989 flooded the lower river into a muddy-bottomed reservoir (Lago Urugua-í) in which yaha cannot live — its required rocky-pool habitat and its snail prey are both absent there — and where, the rediscovery team noted, non-native species are increasing in diversity and biomass. The species survived only in the riverine stretches outside the reservoir's influence, and it went uncollected for thirty years after 1986 despite a decade of dedicated fieldwork before it was finally refound in 2016 at just two localities. Its persistence therefore hinges on the continued health of a handful of rocky-pool reaches in the Atlantic Forest of Misiones — a heavily cleared biome — and on the modest population of the Potamolithus snails it depends on. The broader Paraná basin faces well-documented pressures from damming, fragmentation, land-use change and the spread of introduced species; for a rare single-river molluscivore like yaha, these are not abstract backdrop but the very forces that have already shaped, and narrowed, its world. A reassessment that weighs its restricted range and habitat dependence would be warranted.
