Taxonomy & naming
Australoheros tavaresi was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Felipe P. Ottoni in 2012, in a paper in Vertebrate Zoology (62(1): 83–96) that erected three new species at once — Australoheros tavaresi alongside Australoheros mattosi and Australoheros montanus — and revisited several old names in the 'Cichlasoma' facetum complex. The holotype (MZUSP 50675, in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo) came from a lagoon on the margin of the rio Tietê at Guarulhos, in the São Paulo metropolitan area, and the type series rested on only thirteen specimens. The genus Australoheros itself is recent: Říčan & Kullander coined it in 2006 after morphological and molecular work showed that the wide-ranging fish long lumped as 'Cichlasoma' facetum was in fact a flock of southern species deserving their own genus within the Neotropical heroine cichlids (tribe Heroini; the Cichlid Room Companion files the genus under Therapsini). Ottoni placed tavaresi in the Australoheros autrani species group. Its position in the genus is, however, unsettled. The large 2016 revision of Australoheros by Říčan, Piálek, Almirón & Casciotta (Vertebrate Zoology 66(1): 1–102) retained Australoheros tavaresi as a valid species, and that is how the IUCN and GBIF still list it. But Lucena, Kullander, Norén & Calegari (2022), in a PLOS ONE study pointedly titled 'Conjectures and refutations: species diversity and phylogeny of Australoheros from coastal rivers of southern South America,' synonymised tavaresi — together with Australoheros paraibae, Australoheros barbosae and several other Ottoni names — under Australoheros oblongus (Castelnau, 1855), the senior name based on Chromys oblonga. That treatment is now reflected as the current status in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. We retain the name Australoheros tavaresi here, as the form has its own IUCN assessment and an accepted GBIF taxon, but readers should know that under the most recent revision the fish may simply be an inland population of Australoheros oblongus. The epithet honours Felipe Tavares Autran, who as a student at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro under Wilson Costa first recognised this fish as undescribed in an unpublished 1995 monograph on the facetum complex that circulated widely among Brazilian ichthyologists but was never formally published.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: the largest measured specimen reaches only about 3 in in standard length (snout to tail base), making it one of the more diminutive Australoheros and far smaller than the familiar chameleon cichlid Australoheros facetus, which approaches 8 in. The body is comparatively slim for the genus — body depth runs 39–42% of standard length, against roughly 44–51% in most coastal congeners — giving tavaresi a longer, more elongate profile and a notably long caudal peduncle. Fin counts from the original description are 16–17 dorsal spines and 10–11 dorsal soft rays, 7–8 anal spines and 8–9 anal soft rays, with 26 vertebrae. The single most distinctive feature is the mouth: tavaresi is prognathous, its lower jaw protruding beyond the upper, a trait it shares within the genus only with Australoheros facetus (most Australoheros have an even, isognathous bite). Two more characters help separate it from look-alikes — it carries three dark abdominal (trunk) bars at every stage of life, where the Australoheros facetus, forquilha and kaaygua groups show four bars in juveniles, and it lacks the dark suborbital marks seen in some relatives. In life, as in its congeners, the ground colour is an olive-to-tan body crossed by the dark vertical bars, with a rounded blotch at the base of the tail; sexual dimorphism has not been documented in detail for this species, but across Australoheros it is modest, with males growing somewhat larger and developing slightly longer dorsal and anal fin tips while ripe females are rounder and deeper-bodied. We flag that this sex difference is inferred from the genus rather than measured in tavaresi specifically.
Habitat
Australoheros tavaresi lives in clear, well-oxygenated freshwaters of the Brazilian interior, not the Atlantic coastal rivers that hold most of the genus. The original description fixed it to the upper rio Tietê drainage, but the IUCN assessment, drawing on museum material from several Brazilian collections, extended the confirmed range across the adjacent upper Paraná basin — into streams draining to the rio Grande in São Paulo and to the rio Paranapanema (including the rio Tibagi) in Paraná, with records also referred to Minas Gerais. It is typically found in mid-sized streams and rivers, and has also been collected along the vegetated margins of the Ponte Nova reservoir on the upper Tietê, sheltering among aquatic plants; the IUCN classifies its habitat as permanent rivers, streams and shrub-dominated wetlands. In-situ water chemistry has not been published for this species. By the standard of the upper Paraná headwaters and of the genus as a whole, the appropriate envelope is warm, near-neutral, moderately soft water — roughly 77–86 °F, pH about 6.5–7.0 and hardness on the order of 5–12 °dH, the documented preferences of the closely related type species Australoheros facetus — and shallow habitat, perhaps 0–7 ft, consistent with small streams and reservoir margins. We flag these temperature, pH, hardness and depth figures as genus-typical and habitat-derived values, not measurements taken from tavaresi itself.
Feeding
No dedicated diet study exists for tavaresi, but the available signals point to a small, mid-trophic carnivore. Marceniuk & Hilsdorf, surveying the upper Tietê headwaters, described the local Australoheros (then unnamed, now referable to tavaresi) as piscivorous and common in mid-sized watercourses — an account the IUCN repeats. FishBase places it at trophic level 3.2, the value of a predator that takes small fish and aquatic invertebrates rather than a herbivore or detritivore. That fits the wider genus: Australoheros facetus is documented as an opportunistic, diurnal feeder that eats detritus and plant matter but also preys on small aquatic animals, including fish. The reasonable reading, then, is that tavaresi is a generalist carnivore of small streams — hunting insect larvae, crustaceans and small fishes in and around marginal vegetation — rather than a strict fish specialist; 'piscivorous' is best understood as emphasis on the predatory end of an omnivorous diet.
Mating
The courtship and pairing behaviour of Australoheros tavaresi has not been observed or described in the wild or in captivity — it is a recently named, rarely collected fish that, as far as the published record shows, has not been a subject of aquarium spawning reports. What can be said is drawn from the genus. Australoheros are biparental cichlids that form monogamous pairs at breeding time, with both sexes becoming territorial; in Australoheros facetus, pairs establish and jointly defend a spawning territory, and reproduction is triggered by warmth, with the related species spawning once temperatures climb past about 82–86 °F. By extension, tavaresi is expected to pair off seasonally and defend a substrate territory, the male and female sharing the work, but we flag that this is inferred from congeners rather than documented for the species.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Australoheros tavaresi specifically; the account here is genus-typical and flagged as such. Australoheros are open, biparental substrate spawners — 'chanchitas' in the southern South American sense — not mouthbrooders. In the well-studied type species Australoheros facetus, the female lays her eggs on an exposed hard surface such as a flat stone or a piece of submerged wood, both parents tend and fan the clutch, and the pair go on to guard the larvae and free-swimming fry for roughly one to three weeks; reported fecundity for the genus is on the order of 300–1,000 eggs per spawning. There is every reason to expect tavaresi to follow the same pattern — a flat-surface clutch, shared parental care, and a brief but real period of fry guarding — but no clutch size, egg count or developmental timing has actually been measured for this species, so those figures should be read as the genus norm rather than as data for the fish itself.
In the aquarium
Australoheros tavaresi is essentially absent from the hobby outside Brazil, and no keeper accounts have been published. The following is inferred from the broader genus — primarily the well-documented care of Australoheros facetus and other 'chanchitas' — adjusted for this species' smaller size, upper Paraná provenance, and the cool-tolerant subtropical climate of the upper Tietê headwaters. Everything here should be read as genus-based guidance unless otherwise noted.
A tank of 20–25 US gal is a reasonable minimum for a single pair, given that adults reach only about 3 in standard length — somewhat smaller than Australoheros facetus and considerably smaller than the stocky riverine congeners from the south. Chanchitas in general are diggers and rearrangers; a sand or fine gravel substrate lets them excavate pre-spawn pits without damaging themselves, and a generous supply of flat stones, pieces of slate, and submerged wood gives the pair options for a spawning site. Dense marginal planting (Vallisneria, Sagittaria, or robust Echinodorus species) breaks lines of sight and reduces the intensity of pair aggression. Live plants in the centre of the tank will likely be uprooted once the fish move into breeding condition — a sacrificial potted plant or two, or floating cover, provides refuge without investing in fragile stems.
Water chemistry should track what the upper Paraná headwaters deliver: soft to moderately hard (up to about 12 °dH), near-neutral water in the pH 6.5–7.0 range, at 77–86 °F. One advantage of this species and the genus more broadly is tolerance of cooler temperatures during winter — Australoheros facetus is routinely kept unheated in temperate fishrooms when the season allows — but 77 °F is the recommended working minimum for tavaresi, as the upper Tietê does not experience extended cold periods in the way the lower Uruguay basin does. Clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow is more important than hitting exact soft-water targets; the fish is not demanding about mineral content, but it is sensitive to accumulated nitrogenous waste.
Tankmates require care. Even at 3 in, a breeding pair of Australoheros will defend their territory with surprising vigour, and the combination of a small tank and a motivated pair can be lethal to any peaceful community fish sharing the space. Robust, similarly sized cichlids or large characins can sometimes share a large aquarium, but a species tank or a carefully matched pair-only setup is the safest approach, particularly during spawning. Aggressive conspecific encounters — two pairs, or a mismatched pair — should be anticipated and space or a divider provided. The species' carnivorous bent means small tetras or young livebearers are at risk from a full-grown adult.
Breeding follows the open biparental substrate-spawner template of the entire genus. Once the pair bonds, the female will prepare and clean a flat surface — a stone or a section of smooth wood — and deposit a clutch estimated in the hundreds of eggs, consistent with the 300–1,000 range documented for Australoheros facetus. Both parents fan the eggs, remove unfertilised ones, and jointly guard the larvae through to the free-swimming fry stage, which takes roughly one to three weeks depending on temperature. The most common keeper error with Australoheros is disturbing the pair during this period or housing them with fish assertive enough to push the parents off the spawn, leading to egg loss and pair aggression redirected within the tank. A second common mistake is underestimating aggression before the pair is established: introducing two fish simultaneously into a bare or sparsely furnished tank often results in one fish being killed. Add both fish to an already-furnished tank, observe closely for the first week, and have a divider ready.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Australoheros tavaresi as Least Concern, in an assessment carried out on 7 November 2018 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022 as part of the national red-listing of Brazilian fauna. The category rests not on abundance — the species is described as naturally uncommon and patchily collected, with only thirty individuals taken in two years of monthly sampling on the upper Tietê — but on the absence of any threat severe enough to put the population at risk. The pressures the assessors did note are the familiar ones of an agricultural, heavily urbanised basin: destruction of habitat in farming and ranching country, removal of riparian (ciliary) forest, soil erosion and siltation of streams, and the possibility that, like other Australoheros traded as ornamentals, it could attract collection. None was judged significant for the species. That said, this is a fish of the upper rio Tietê — a river that drains greater São Paulo, one of the most densely populated and industrialised regions of South America, and whose lower reaches are among the most polluted in Brazil. The headwater streams tavaresi occupies are comparatively better off, and a few records fall within protected areas such as the Parque Estadual de Vila Velha in Paraná, but the long-term backdrop is one of intense urban and agricultural pressure on a naturally scarce, range-restricted endemic. The IUCN explicitly flags the need for basic work on its distribution limits, population trend and biology — and, one might add, on whether 'tavaresi' is a species at all or a population of Australoheros oblongus, a question with direct bearing on how its conservation is framed.
