Aphyosemion wachtersi is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the upper Ogowe and upper Louesse drainage systems in the Republic of Congo, with outlying collection records from southern Gabon in the Massif du Chaillu region. Restricted to overflow pools and shaded forest stream margins at elevations where water stays reliably cool — typically 64–72 °F — it is a plant spawner that deposits adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops rather than burying them in peat like its annual relatives. In the killifish hobby it is considered a moderately demanding species, valued by specialists for its intricate patterning and its two geographically defined subspecific forms, A. wachtersi wachtersi from the eastern sites and A. wachtersi mikeae from the west. The IUCN assessed it as Data Deficient in 2009, a designation that masks genuine concern: at least the westernmost collection sites lie within the footprint of the Zanaga iron-ore mining project, and the species' dependence on intact forest cover leaves it acutely sensitive to riparian disturbance.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion wachtersi was described by Alfred C. Radda and Jean-Henri Huber in 1978, placing it among the large and taxonomically complex genus Aphyosemion — the core West and Central African killifish clade, now spanning well over 60 valid species. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the valid name as Aphyosemion wachtersi Radda & Huber, 1978.

Two subspecies are recognised in the killifish literature, though their status is regarded as questionable by some authorities, notably Wildekamp. A. wachtersi wachtersi encompasses the more easterly population set; A. wachtersi mikeae describes the westerly populations. The two differ subtly in male colouration and are maintained as field-recognised designations rather than formally revised taxa pending a modern molecular study. In the hobby, collection-site codes distinguish material: the species has been collected at 13 or more discrete sites spanning both drainage systems, and strain codes issued by killifish associations (RPC codes for early Republic of Congo collections through to FCCO codes from 2013 expeditions) provide the data trail that underpins subspecific assignments.

The species sits within the broader Aphyosemion cameronense group or related assemblage of small, forest-stream non-annuals from the Congo basin periphery, alongside sympatric species such as A. caudofasciatum, A. schluppi, A. louessense, and A. pyrophore, which share some collection sites or nearby drainages.

Morphology

Aphyosemion wachtersi is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum recorded size of 2 in total length for males; females are typically smaller and more subdued in colouration. The body shape is cylindrical toward the head and tapers gently to a rounded or slightly pointed caudal fin, typical of the non-annual Aphyosemion baugruppe.

Male colouration follows the ornate, multi-tone pattern characteristic of the genus: the flanks carry a ground colour overlaid with a mosaic of red spots or streaks arranged in irregular longitudinal rows, with iridescent blue-green elements on the anterior flanks and a reddish or orange flush toward the posterior and on the unpaired fins. The caudal fin shows the lyrate or slightly produced extensions that appear in several related species and is edged in yellow or white. Females are plainly coloured in olive or beige with faint spotting, without the elaborate finnage development seen in males.

Fin structure is non-annual in character: the dorsal and anal fins are set well back on the body, as in most Aphyosemion, but are not elongate or filamentous; the fish is proportioned for life in slow-moving or still-water overflow pools rather than open stream current.

Habitat

In the wild, Aphyosemion wachtersi occupies the peripheral, low-gradient margins of the upper Ogowe and upper Louesse river systems in the Republic of Congo, with additional records from the Massif du Chaillu region of southern Gabon. The characteristic microhabitat is the overflow pool or marshy zone adjacent to small forest streams — shallow, shaded water bodies that fill during rain events and maintain connectivity with the stream network rather than drying completely. This is not annual killifish territory: the water is permanent or near-permanent, sustaining populations year-round.

Water conditions are classically West and Central African forest stream: acidic and tannin-stained, low in dissolved minerals, with a thick leaf-litter substrate. The temperature regime is comparatively cool for the tropics — FishBase records 64–72 °F, and hobbyist experience confirms that egg production is best below 72 °F, with 68 °F as an optimum. The overflow zones can be low in dissolved oxygen, an environment in which the leaf litter and its associated microfauna provide the food base.

Sympathy with other Aphyosemion and with Hypsopanchax zebra is recorded at various sites, though niche partitioning keeps interactions manageable. The species' dependence on intact forest cover and cool, shaded water is the source of its vulnerability: even modest clearing of riparian forest raises water temperatures and alters the hydrology of overflow pools in ways that this temperature-sensitive specialist cannot easily tolerate.

Feeding

In the wild Aphyosemion wachtersi feeds on the small invertebrate fauna of its leaf-litter overflow pools: insect larvae (including Culex mosquito larvae), small crustaceans, worms, and surface-fallen invertebrates. The ambush posture typical of non-annual Aphyosemion — hovering motionless near vegetation, then striking at passing prey — suits the low-flow, structure-rich habitats it occupies.

In captivity the species is readily fed on a variety of live and frozen invertebrate foods: bloodworm, Daphnia, white worms, Grindal worms, Artemia nauplii, Drosophila (fruit flies), and mosquito larvae are all accepted. As with most Aphyosemion, a diet centred on small live or frozen foods produces the best colouration in males and the best reproductive output in females. Dry foods are taken by some individuals but should not form the staple of the diet.

Mating

Aphyosemion wachtersi is a non-annual killifish and a plant or mop spawner. Pairs engage in courtship in which the male displays his fully erected finnage alongside the female, driving her gently toward fine-leaved plants, java moss, peat fibre, or floating spawning mops positioned near the water surface or just above the substrate. The adhesive eggs are deposited one or a few at a time during embraces over the course of days or weeks, rather than in a single concentrated spawning event.

Male aggression toward the female can be persistent and, in a small tank without adequate cover, injurious. Clumps of java moss, floating plants, and other visual barriers are essential to allow the female to escape pursuit and recover between spawning bouts. Successful pairing depends on the male being in good condition and the female given adequate refuges. The non-annual life history means that spawning can continue over an extended season rather than being compressed into a narrow window as in annual species.

Breeding

Eggs are small, adhesive, and semi-transparent, deposited singly or in small numbers on fine-leaved vegetation or into the fibres of a spawning mop. At the preferred water temperature of approximately 68–72 °F, incubation takes around 16–18 days in water — with no diapause or dry period required, distinguishing this species clearly from the peat-spawning annual killies of the same family.

Eggs can be collected by removing the mop or plant clump to a separate container with clean, slightly acidic water, or fry can be left with the parents in a heavily planted tank and rescued as they appear. Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria or commercial fry powder in the first days, graduating to freshly hatched Artemia nauplii and microworms as they grow. They are relatively delicate in the early weeks and benefit from stable, cool water. Adult pairs resume spawning shortly after egg removal, and a well-conditioned pair kept at or below 72 °F will produce continuous small batches across a long season.

The two subspecific forms should not be mixed in a breeding programme if strain integrity is to be maintained. Hobbyist records indicate some difficulty sustaining colonies of this species, attributed partly to temperature sensitivity — tanks running above 75 °F produce far fewer viable eggs — and partly to the male's aggression toward the female in cramped quarters.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion wachtersi is rated a moderately demanding species in the killifish hobby, suited to an experienced keeper rather than a beginner. The principal challenge is temperature: the fish requires water cooler than most tropical community setups, ideally 64–72 °F, which means either a cool room, an aquarium fan, or an active chiller in warmer climates. At standard tropical temperatures of 77–82 °F, the fish may survive but reproduction fails and lifespan is shortened.

A small, species-specific aquarium — a 15.5–23.5 in tank is ample for a pair — planted densely with java moss and fine-leaved plants or equipped with floating spawning mops is the standard approach. Water should be soft and slightly acidic, reflecting the tannin-stained forest stream conditions of the native range, though the species tolerates a modest pH range. FishBase lists pH 5.5 as the lower end of the recorded range; in practice, pH 6.0–7.0 works well in captivity. The tank should be covered: as with all killifish, jumping is a real risk.

The species is described as very difficult to maintain long-term by some aquarists, likely reflecting the temperature constraint and the need for live or high-quality frozen foods. In the hands of a specialist who can meet those requirements it is a rewarding fish: males in peak condition display intensely coloured finnage, and the steady trickle of eggs from a well-managed pair sustains a small colony without difficulty. The availability of two subspecific forms, each with distinct site-coded strains, gives additional interest to killifish hobbyists interested in maintaining provenance.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessment (Moelants 2023, in IUCN Red List v2025-2) assigns Aphyosemion wachtersi a status of Data Deficient (DD), with the underlying assessment dated to 2009. The DD category reflects genuine uncertainty about population sizes and trends rather than an absence of concern: the species is known from only around 9–13 collection sites concentrated in a geographically limited area of the Republic of Congo and southern Gabon, and all of those sites depend on intact forest cover for the cool, shaded, slow-flow conditions the species requires.

The most acute documented threat is the Zanaga iron-ore project in the Republic of Congo, which encompasses the western collection localities of A. wachtersi mikeae. Mining infrastructure, road construction, and the associated deforestation and hydrological alteration that accompany large-scale extractive operations can eliminate or severely degrade the overflow-pool habitats in which this species lives. The species was flagged in killifish literature as early as 2013 as facing site-specific threats from this development.

More broadly, the upper Ogowe and Louesse drainages are subject to the pressures common to Central African forest systems: agricultural encroachment, logging, and charcoal production that remove the riparian tree cover, warm and destabilise stream temperatures, and reduce the overflow flooding that creates and sustains the marginal pools the species occupies. Because Aphyosemion wachtersi is not an annual species capable of dispersing rapidly or recolonising after disturbance events, local extinctions at individual sites may be permanent. A targeted survey of the known collection localities, combined with habitat condition assessment, would provide the data needed to support a formal threat category under IUCN criteria.
