Taxonomy & naming
George Albert Boulenger described this fish in 1897 as Corematodus shiranus, erecting the genus for it at the same time. He worked from specimens taken in the upper Shire River, the river that drains Lake Malawi at its southern end — still the type locality recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, which lists the name as valid in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Corematodus is a small genus: the type species Corematodus shiranus and a second species, Corematodus taeniatus Trewavas, 1935. Both are Malawi-basin endemics and both are scale-eaters, making Corematodus one of the lake's dedicated lepidophage lineages.
The genus name is a compact description of the animal's tool kit. It blends the Greek korema, a broom or brush, with -odus, tooth — 'brush-tooth,' for the dense bands of fine, backward-set teeth that feel, in Ad Konings's phrase about the sister species, 'like sandpaper to the touch.' The species epithet shiranus simply marks the Shire River of the type series. In the Malawian fishery the fish is lumped under vernacular names shared with look-alike open-water cichlids, including 'happy' and 'nandere.' It is not a member of the mbuna or the peacocks; it sits among the open-water and sand-associated haplochromines, but its biology is unlike almost anything else in the lake.
Morphology
Corematodus shiranus is a moderately large, elongate, laterally compressed cichlid that FishBase records to about 10.5 in total length — sizeable for a Malawi haplochromine, and notably matched to the body size of the tilapias it shadows. Its build is unremarkable on purpose: a bright silvery ground color crossed by irregular dark vertical bars, a shape and pattern that read, at a glance and from a fish's eye, as just another mid-water tilapia.
The specialization is in the mouth. The jaws carry wide bands of numerous small, fine teeth set in a rasp-like pad rather than the few stout cusps of a typical biter — the 'brush' that names the genus. Konings, Wisor and Stauffer's 2021 microcomputed-tomography study of Malawi cichlid feeding morphology places Corematodus among the scale-eaters whose head and jaw architecture is tuned not for crushing or tearing but for scraping epithelium-covered scales off another fish's fin. The teeth are small and densely packed precisely because the job is abrasion, not amputation. Sexing and breeding coloration are poorly documented in the wild relative to better-studied Malawi genera, a reflection of how rarely this fish is collected and observed.
Habitat
Corematodus shiranus is endemic to the Lake Malawi system, with FishBase recording it as widespread across Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe and the upper Shire River, and documented occurrences running along the southern lake from Chipoka to Makanjila across the southwest and southeast arms. It is not a fish of any one rock or sand patch; because it lives by infiltrating schools of its prey, its distribution tracks theirs.
In practice that means open water and the margins of sandy floors where shoaling tilapia gather, and sometimes near rocks — the same habitat as its Oreochromis hosts rather than a microhabitat of its own. Like the rest of the Malawi fauna it lives in hard, alkaline water — pH on the order of 7.7 to 8.8 and temperatures around 75–82 °F — the clear, mineral-rich biotope chemistry the lake is famous for. Its dependence on prey shoals rather than on a fixed habitat is exactly what makes it vulnerable when those shoals thin out.
Feeding
This is a lepidophage — a scale-eater — and the means is aggressive mimicry, one of the most remarkable feeding strategies in the lake. Fryer and Iles, in their classic 1972 monograph on the cichlids of the African Great Lakes, documented the system: Corematodus shiranus closely resembles the tilapia Oreochromis ('Nyasalapia') squamipinnis, from the bright silvery ground color to the irregular outlines of the dark bars, and combines that visual resemblance with behavioral mimicry to swim, in low numbers, among shoals of the tilapia. Accepted as one of the crowd, it approaches a host fish and rapidly bites at the caudal fin, rasping off the small, epithelium-covered scales. Fryer and Iles recovered hundreds of such scales from the gut contents of Corematodus — scales make up essentially the whole diet. FishBase places the species at a high trophic level of about 4.4, the signature of an animal eating other fish (or their tissue) rather than algae or plankton.
The mechanics reward a closer look. A frontal attack on a wary, larger fish is hard; a scrape on the tail of a fish that does not perceive you as a threat is easy, and the caudal fin's small scales are a renewable resource — the victim survives and regrows them, so the parasite-like grazer never runs out of host. That is why the disguise matters so much: the strategy works only as long as the deceiver stays rare relative to its model and stays convincing enough to be tolerated inside the school. It is a textbook case of the kind of frequency-dependent, mimicry-based lepidophagy that has evolved independently in scale-eating cichlids of both Malawi and Tanganyika.
Mating
Direct field accounts of courtship in Corematodus shiranus are scarce — a consequence of how thinly it is distributed and how seldom it is observed — but its placement among the Malawi haplochromines fixes the broad picture. Like essentially all of the lake's haplochromine cichlids, it is a polygynous, non-pair-bonding mouthbrooder in which males court passing females and take no lasting part in raising young.
What little is on record fits that mold rather than contradicting it, and the species' reproductive biology has simply not been studied in the detail lavished on the mbuna or the peacocks. The honest position is that the spawning coloration, display and territoriality of this fish remain poorly documented in the wild, and that the breeding outline below is inferred from the well-established Malawi haplochromine pattern rather than from a dedicated study of Corematodus itself.
Breeding
Corematodus shiranus is, on the strength of its lineage, a maternal (female-only) mouthbrooder, following the reproductive pattern shared across the Lake Malawi haplochromine radiation: the female lays her eggs, takes them immediately into her mouth, and the clutch is fertilized as she mouths at the male before she carries the developing eggs and then the fry for several weeks without feeding.
Species-specific figures — clutch size, brooding duration, fry size at release — have not been reliably published for this fish, and it would be invention to assign them precise numbers. What can be said is that the young are not born scale-eaters in any useful sense at first; the specialized rasping behavior and the mimic's confidence among hostile schools are things a small Corematodus must grow into, and a juvenile too small to pass as a tilapia cannot run the deception its parents live by. This is a fish whose breeding biology is a genuine gap in the science, not a settled story.
In the aquarium
Corematodus shiranus is essentially never seen in the hobby, and for good reasons. It is rarely exported, it is now a Critically Endangered species whose wild stocks should not be drawn on for ornamental keeping, and its single defining behavior makes it a poor aquarium animal: a dedicated scale-eater needs other fish to harass, and in a tank it will rasp the fins and scales of tankmates rather than settle for prepared food. There is no established care literature for it, no body of breeding reports, and no responsible reason to seek it out.
If the fish has a place in a hobbyist's world, it is as a story rather than a specimen — an illustration of how far cichlid evolution can push a feeding strategy, and of why a fish can be both a clever predator and one of the lake's most endangered animals. The aquarist's contribution here is conservation-minded interest in the Malawi system as a whole, not the keeping of this particular fish. Anyone drawn to the scale-eating, mimicry niche is far better served reading the field accounts than chasing a wild-caught Corematodus.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Corematodus shiranus as Critically Endangered, assessed on 19 June 2018 — a dramatic uplisting. The species had been rated Least Concern as recently as 2006; the 2018 reassessment moved it straight to Critically Endangered, and IUCN's tracking tables have flagged it among the basin's possibly-extinct candidates, underscoring how steep the decline is judged to be.
The cause is the unusual coupling of this fish to its prey. Corematodus shiranus is an obligate scale-eater that lives by infiltrating shoals of the chambo tilapias — Oreochromis squamipinnis and its relatives — which are themselves endemic, commercially vital, and now Critically Endangered after decades of heavy overfishing in the southern lake and Lake Malombe. A mimic that has staked everything on resembling and shadowing one host group has almost no slack when that group crashes: there are fewer schools to hide in, fewer tails to graze, and the rarity that the disguise depends on becomes outright scarcity. The IUCN's Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa catchment review documents exactly this linkage, listing Corematodus shiranus among the cichlids uplisted to Critically Endangered alongside the collapse of the chambo fishery. The broader pressures on the lake — overfishing, sediment and nutrient loading off deforested catchments, warming and stronger stratification trimming productivity — all bear down on the inshore, shallow-water tilapia stocks first, and through them on this specialist. Its story is a clean, sobering lesson in ecological dependency: you cannot lose the model and keep the mimic.
