Taxonomy & naming
Crenicichla iguapina was described by Sven O. Kullander of the Swedish Museum of Natural History and Carlos A. S. de Lucena of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul in 2006, in their review of the Crenicichla of the Atlantic coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil (Neotropical Ichthyology 4(2):127–146). It was one of three new species named in that paper, alongside Crenicichla tingui and Crenicichla maculata. The holotype, a young male of 5 in standard length (MZUSP 49062), was collected in October 1961 by H. Britski and N. A. Menezes at Iporanga, in the rio Betari of the upper Ribeira de Iguape drainage, State of São Paulo; twelve paratypes, ranging from 2.5–7 in, came from rivers and streams across the same drainage. The species name is sometimes misattributed to an earlier (1992) Lucena & Kullander paper that treated the Uruguay-and-Paraná pikes, but iguapina itself dates to the 2006 coastal-rivers revision. Within the genus, Kullander and Lucena placed it in the Crenicichla lacustris species group — the assemblage of southern and southeastern pikes that also contains Crenicichla lacustris, Crenicichla tingui, Crenicichla maculata, Crenicichla punctata and the type species' close relatives. No junior synonyms have been proposed; the name has been treated as valid in every subsequent checklist, including Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Crenicichla itself is by far the largest cichlid genus in the New World, with well over a hundred described species, and it has lately been the subject of proposals to split off some lineages (for example into Lacustricola-type or other segregate genera), though iguapina has remained in Crenicichla.
Morphology
This is a medium-sized, elongate pike cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of 7 in standard length, consistent with the type series, in which the largest male measured 6.5 in and the largest female 6 in; total length is somewhat greater once the tail is included. By the lean standards of the genus it is comparatively deep-bodied, with body depth running 18.8–22.1% of standard length. The head is long with a rounded snout and a prognathous (jutting) lower jaw, the orbit set high and forward so the eyes are not visible from below — the classic profile of an ambush predator that hangs in cover and watches the water above and ahead of it. Fin counts are 21–23 dorsal spines with 12–14 soft rays and 8–10 anal soft rays, and the flank scales are strongly ctenoid (rough to the touch). The diagnostic colour pattern is a continuous dark band along the middle of the side, from which about five paler dark bars extend up to the base of the dorsal fin, with one or two more reaching the upper edge of the caudal peduncle; pale interspaces separate the bars. A dark preorbital stripe runs from the eye across the upper lip, a postorbital stripe runs back from the eye to the gill cleft, and there is a conspicuous suborbital marking below the eye. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males carry the vivid spotting on the sides and the unpaired fins, while females are largely immaculate apart from the markings of the lateral band and a spot on the caudal fin. The presence of the suborbital mark and the absence of dark spots on the side of the head separate iguapina from the otherwise similar Crenicichla lacustris and Crenicichla tingui.
Habitat
Crenicichla iguapina is endemic to the Ribeira de Iguape drainage, a large Atlantic-coast basin of roughly 27,0 mi² that drains the eastern slope of the Serra do Mar and reaches the sea near the town of Iguape. The Catalog of Fishes places the species in the Ribeira de Iguape system within the southeastern Mata Atlantica, and the original type and paratype localities all lie in the São Paulo portion of the basin — Iporanga and the rio Betari in the karstic upper river (the Alto Ribeira), down through Juquiá, Miracatu, Registro and Pariquera. The basin's headwaters extend into the State of Paraná as well, and the IUCN lists the species from both São Paulo and Paraná. This is a notably intact river: it has never been dammed along its main stem, and it runs through one of the largest remaining tracts of Atlantic Forest, much of it inside protected areas. The waters are typical southeastern-Brazilian coastal rivers and clearwater forest streams — warm but cooler and softer than the Amazon lowlands, flowing over sand, gravel and rock among forested or pasture-fringed banks. Published in-situ chemistry for this particular species is sparse; the values given in the facts panel are drawn from the general character of the basin and from congeners in comparable coastal habitats rather than from measurements on iguapina itself, and should be read as indicative rather than measured. As a benthopelagic predator it occupies the shallow, structure-rich margins of rivers and streams where it can ambush from cover.
Feeding
Like the great majority of Crenicichla, iguapina is a piscivore — FishBase records it simply as feeding on fish, and its build leaves little doubt: the elongate body, large protrusible jaws and high, forward-set eyes are the toolkit of a lie-in-wait ambush hunter. Pike cichlids of this kind hold station among submerged wood, rocks, leaf litter and root tangles, then accelerate in a short rush to engulf passing fish and large invertebrates. Stomach-content data specific to iguapina have not been published, and FishBase's modelled trophic level of about 3.3 reflects estimation from related species rather than direct measurement, but the qualitative diet is secure: in the community of the Ribeira de Iguape it functions as a mid-level predator on smaller fishes. As with other pikes, juveniles take a larger share of aquatic insects and other invertebrates before shifting toward fish as they grow.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Crenicichla iguapina has not been documented in the wild or, as far as the published record shows, in captivity. What can be said comes from the broader genus, which is remarkably consistent in this respect. Crenicichla form monogamous pairs and are biparental cave or crevice spawners; pair formation involves mutual display and the joint establishment and defence of a territory centred on a spawning site. Outside breeding the fish are solitary and territorial, and the genus is known for sharp intraspecific aggression — pairs must be well matched, because a mismatched or unready partner can be harassed or killed. There is no reason to think iguapina departs from this pike-cichlla norm of paired, site-attached, strongly territorial spawning, but any specific account of its courtship would be speculation.
Breeding
No spawning of Crenicichla iguapina has been described, so its breeding biology must be inferred from the genus. Crenicichla are biparental substrate and cave spawners: the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs to a sheltered surface — the roof or wall of a cave, a crevice, an overhang or the underside of wood or rock — and both parents guard the eggs and the resulting wrigglers and free-swimming fry, the female tending the brood closely while the male patrols the territory. Medium-sized lacustris-group pikes typically lay on the order of one to a few hundred eggs per spawning (a genus-typical figure, not a measured value for this species), with the young defended vigorously until they disperse. FishBase rates the species as having high resilience and a short population-doubling time, which is consistent with the moderate fecundity and effective parental care seen across the genus. Until someone breeds it and writes it up, every specific number for iguapina remains an extrapolation from its relatives.
In the aquarium
Crenicichla iguapina is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It is a range-restricted species from a roadless, heavily protected basin, it is not exported in any quantity, and there is no body of keeping experience specific to it — anyone discussing its care is reasoning from the genus, not from the fish. Should it ever appear, it would be managed like other medium-sized lacustris-group pikes: a long tank with a generous footprint (a single adult or a confirmed pair wants roughly 47 in / 4 ft of length or more), plenty of structure — driftwood, rockwork and caves — to break up sightlines and provide ambush stations and spawning sites, and a sand or fine-gravel bottom. Water should be warm and on the soft, slightly acidic to neutral side, reflecting its clearwater coastal-river origins; clean, well-filtered water and regular changes matter, as these are predators with a substantial bioload. It must be fed as the piscivore it is, on meaty foods — and, importantly, not on feeder goldfish, which are a poor and risky diet; thawed fish, prawn, earthworms and eventually pellets are better. Tankmates should be fish too large to be eaten and robust enough not to be bullied; conspecifics and other pikes should only be combined in large, well-structured systems, given the genus's reputation for serious intraspecific aggression. In short: a fish for a specialist, and one almost no aquarist will ever encounter.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crenicichla iguapina as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) with P. Reis; published 2022), recording no significant threats to the population and listing it from the Brazilian states of São Paulo and Paraná. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. Its single great advantage is its home water: the Ribeira de Iguape is one of the few large Brazilian coastal rivers never dammed on its main stem, and it flows through extensive, legally protected Atlantic Forest — the Atlantic Forest Southeast Reserves are a UNESCO World Heritage area. That said, the species is a narrow-range endemic confined to one basin, which leaves it intrinsically exposed should that basin's condition change: proposals for dams have recurred over the years, and the wider Atlantic Forest remains under pressure from deforestation, agriculture and introduced species. For now the population is judged secure, but its fate is tied entirely to the continued integrity of a single river system.
