Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus jureiae was described by Triques & Khamis in 2003, in the journal Lundiana, as part of a broader taxonomic revision of the bluntnose knifefish genus Brachyhypopomus. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — a group of bony fish set apart from almost everything else in freshwater by their ability to generate a weak electric field around the body and read the world through it, a sense called electrolocation, alongside a private electric "voice" used to signal to other fish of their kind.
The genus Brachyhypopomus is large and still being actively revised; several species, B. jureiae among them, were only formally distinguished from their relatives in the early 2000s on the strength of subtle differences in colour pattern and skeletal detail, and molecular and cytogenetic work on the genus is ongoing. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name. As with other gymnotiforms, B. jureiae has no relationship to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) — the resemblance is convergent body shape, not shared ancestry.
Morphology
Brachyhypopomus jureiae has the soft, elongated, laterally compressed body typical of the bluntnose knifefishes, tapering to a fine tail and propelled by a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than a dorsal or true caudal fin — the same swimming plan shared across the order, allowing the fish to move forwards or backwards with equal ease. True to the genus name, the snout is short and rounded ("blunt-nosed"), lacking the elongated, probing snout seen in the related sand knifefishes (Rhamphichthys, Gymnorhamphichthys).
The species was distinguished from its congeners chiefly by colour pattern: rather than the dark transverse bars crossing the body seen in many Brachyhypopomus, B. jureiae shows a horizontal series of dark, roughly circular or oblique spots running along the lower flank. Like all gymnotiforms it is scaleless, with an electric organ running along the body and sensory pores in the skin that read the field it produces. Detailed size data for the species is sparse in the literature; other members of the genus range roughly 4.5–18 in total length, and B. jureiae, as a smaller-bodied bluntnose species, is presumed to sit toward the modest end of that range.
Habitat
Brachyhypopomus jureiae is known from small Atlantic coastal drainages of São Paulo state in southern Brazil, specifically the Ribeira de Iguape and Una do Prelado river systems; its type locality is a small tributary of the Rio Una do Prelado, the Rio do Descalvado, which drains directly to the Atlantic Ocean. This is a narrow, single-region range rather than one of the great interior basins that many gymnotiforms occupy.
As a bluntnose knifefish it fits the pattern typical of Hypopomidae: a small, cryptic, nocturnal fish of lentic or slow-flowing freshwater, sheltering by day among leaf litter, roots and dense marginal cover in dim, tannin-stained water. That low light is where its electric sense earns its keep, letting the fish navigate and hunt where eyesight offers little advantage.
Feeding
Specific dietary studies of Brachyhypopomus jureiae have not been published, but the genus as a whole is understood to feed as nocturnal predators of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and other benthic prey — picked out of leaf litter and sediment largely by electrolocation rather than sight. This matches the broader pattern across small Hypopomidae, which forage by night and rest hidden by day.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species, since it is not established in the hobby; any care would need to follow the general bluntnose-knifefish pattern of small, meaty live or frozen foods offered after dark.
Mating
Courtship and pair formation in B. jureiae have not been documented. Across the Hypopomidae, electric organ discharges are known to carry information relevant to species and sex recognition, and pulse-type signalling — the type B. jureiae is understood to produce — likely plays a role in locating and identifying potential mates in the dark, murky habitats these fish occupy, as it does in better-studied relatives such as B. gauderio. Beyond that inference, data on this species' mating behaviour is sparse.
Breeding
Breeding biology in Brachyhypopomus jureiae is essentially undescribed. Where reproduction has been studied in the genus — most thoroughly in the more northerly, better-researched congener B. gauderio — bluntnose knifefishes are egg-layers that appear to scatter or deposit eggs among leaf litter, roots or fine cover, generally timed to the wet season, with little to no parental care afterward. It is reasonable to expect B. jureiae follows a broadly similar pattern, but this has not been confirmed for the species itself, and no spawning has been recorded in captivity. Data sparse; treat any breeding claim for this species as inference from relatives rather than established fact.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus jureiae has no meaningful presence in the aquarium trade and no documented aquarium husbandry. Any care would have to be extrapolated cautiously from the bluntnose and sand knifefish group generally: warm, soft, dimly lit, tannin-stained water over a soft or leaf-littered substrate, with abundant cover for a fish that is nocturnal, delicate and easily stressed by bright light or open, bare tanks.
As with all gymnotiforms it is scaleless, and so would need great care with medications — no copper-based treatments, reduced dosing generally — and is likely sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, requiring mature, stable water quality. Given how little is known of its biology and its narrow natural range, this is not a species to expect in the hobby, and any specimen encountered should be treated as a conservation-sensitive, poorly-understood animal rather than a routine aquarium fish.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus jureiae is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Near Threatened. That reflects the narrow, restricted range it is known from — small Atlantic coastal drainages in São Paulo, Brazil, rather than one of the continent's major river systems — a range made all the more notable given the species' very recent description (2003).
Single-region coastal endemics of this kind are typically among the more exposed gymnotiforms, facing habitat degradation, water pollution and land-use change in a part of Brazil under considerable development pressure — pressures consistent with a Near Threatened rather than a more secure listing, even though no specific population decline has been documented for this species.
