Australoheros ribeirae is a small, deep-bodied chanchito cichlid endemic to a single Atlantic-slope river system in southeastern Brazil — the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin of São Paulo State. Described in 2008 by Felipe Ottoni, Osvaldo Oyakawa and Wilson Costa, it is a barred, often red-flanked little fish, rarely much over 3 in long, that lives in the lowland streams, lagoons and oxbows of the Vale do Ribeira. Like all of these southern 'chanchitos' it is a hardy, biparental substrate spawner adapted to the cooler, subtropical waters of coastal Brazil rather than to the warm equatorial rivers of most Neotropical cichlids — and, unusually for the genus, the original description notes that healthy fish frequently turn a vivid red along the flanks.

Taxonomy & naming

Australoheros ribeirae was described in 2008 by the Brazilian ichthyologists Felipe P. Ottoni, Osvaldo T. Oyakawa and Wilson J. E. M. Costa, in the journal Vertebrate Zoology (volume 58, part 1, pages 75–81), published by the Museum für Tierkunde in Dresden. (The species is sometimes wrongly cited as 'Ottoni & Costa, 2008'; the valid authorship, per Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase, is the three-author Ottoni, Oyakawa & Costa.) The holotype, an adult of 1.5 in standard length, is MZUSP 42289 in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo, with a substantial paratype series split between the MZUSP and the fish collection of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. The type locality lies in the Vale do Ribeira of southern São Paulo State — the Catalog of Fishes places it at a lagoon near the Sr. Celso farm on the Sete Barras–Eldorado road, within the rio Ribeira de Iguape drainage. The genus Australoheros had been erected only two years earlier, by Oldřich Říčan and Sven Kullander (2006), to receive the southern South American 'chanchito' cichlids that had long been lumped into the wastebasket genera Cichlasoma and Heros; Australoheros ribeirae was one of the first species added to it after that split. The authors diagnosed the new species against its congeners on a combination of meristic, morphometric and osteological characters — among them a narrow ectopterygoid, a truncate (rather than pointed) neural process on the second caudal vertebra, an epibranchial 2 bearing two long tubular processes, and a long anterior arm on epibranchial 1 — and noted that its colour pattern resembles several still-undescribed Australoheros from Rio de Janeiro State, from which it differs in the bone of the second vertebra and in often showing red on the body. Within the genus it is one of the geographically isolated coastal-river forms; later molecular and morphological revisions of Australoheros (Říčan et al. 2016; Lucena et al. 2022) have continued to refine the group, but Australoheros ribeirae has stood as a valid species since its description.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid. The original description is based on a type series of 1.5–3 in standard length (snout to tail base), and FishBase gives a maximum of 3 in SL — placing Australoheros ribeirae among the more modest-sized members of its genus and well short of the familiar large chanchito Australoheros facetus. The body is deep and strongly laterally compressed, the body depth running roughly 47–51% of standard length, with a gently convex dorsal profile and small, isognathous jaws bearing curved caniniform teeth that are hyaline with red tips. Fin counts are diagnostic and tightly constrained: 16 dorsal-fin spines and 9–10 soft rays, 6–7 anal-fin spines and 8 anal soft rays, with 26 vertebrae. The ground colour is a light brown that shifts readily through yellowish, greenish and reddish tones, crossed by seven dark vertical trunk bars between the gill cover and the tail base and marked with three black spots — one on the caudal peduncle, one at the midbody on the longitudinal stripe, and the third higher and forward. The bars darken and pale quickly with mood, and a green iridescence plays over the flanks, concentrated near the bars and spots; the fins carry blue, green and purple iridescence on their margins. The single most distinctive colour feature, emphasized in the description, is that the side of the body is usually red — a feature that separates it from Australoheros facetus (whose flanks are never red) and from several look-alike undescribed congeners. The opercle lacks the dark spots seen in some relatives. As across the genus, sexual dimorphism is modest and not strongly documented for this species: breeding males of Australoheros tend to grow somewhat larger with more produced, pointed dorsal- and anal-fin tips, while ripe females are rounder-bodied; outside spawning condition the sexes are hard to separate, and the original description did not report a clear external dimorphism.

Habitat

Australoheros ribeirae is endemic to the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin of São Paulo State, in coastal southeastern Brazil — a single Atlantic-slope drainage of roughly 27,0 mi² draining the Serra do Mar through the Atlantic Forest of the Vale do Ribeira to the sea near Iguape. The known records are concentrated in the lower and middle basin and the rio Juquiá sub-system: a tributary of the rio São Lourenço near Miracatu, a lagoon near the rio São Lourenço at Juquiá, the lago Mimoso on the rio Mimoso (a Juquiá tributary), the córrego Poço Grande, and the rio Pariquera-Mirim. The type material came from lagoons and small rivers of this lowland coastal-plain landscape, so the species is associated with quiet, often still or slow-flowing waters — streams, marginal lagoons and oxbows over soft bottoms — rather than fast headwater torrents. No species-specific in-situ water chemistry has been published, and FishBase carries no measured depth or temperature range for the fish; the figures given here are therefore inferred from its habitat and from the genus, and are flagged as such. As shallow lowland-stream and lagoon fish, Australoheros ribeirae lives in the upper few metres of the water column, so a 0–10 ft habitat band is a reasonable representation of where it is collected rather than a recorded depth limit. Crucially, this is not a warm equatorial cichlid: the rivers of the Atlantic-slope south of the Tropic of Capricorn are subtropical, with cool winters, and the chanchitos that live in them are correspondingly cool-tolerant. A practical envelope of roughly 64–79 °F and a near-neutral to slightly acidic pH of about 6.0–7.5 reflects the soft, mineral-poor Atlantic Forest streams of the region; FishBase nominally labels the genus 'tropical,' but in practice these southern coastal species are functionally subtropical.

Feeding

No dedicated diet study has been published for Australoheros ribeirae, so its trophic ecology is read from its morphology, its FishBase-estimated trophic level of about 3.2, and the well-documented habits of the genus. Australoheros are benthic omnivores: small-mouthed, deep-bodied fish that work over the bottom and through vegetation and leaf litter, taking aquatic insect larvae (chironomids and others), small crustaceans and other invertebrates, supplemented by algae, plant matter and detritus picked from the substrate. The curved caniniform jaw teeth of Australoheros ribeirae suit a generalist invertivore that grasps and dislodges small prey rather than a specialist crusher or sifter. As a small species it occupies a mid-level position in its stream community — both a predator on the benthic invertebrate fauna and, as a small cichlid, prey for larger fishes and piscivorous birds. The genus takes readily to prepared and frozen foods in captivity, consistent with the opportunistic, generalist feeding inferred for the wild fish.

Mating

The courtship and pair-formation behaviour of Australoheros ribeirae has not been described in the wild or in print, and is inferred from the consistent and well-known pattern of the genus. Australoheros are monogamous, biparental cichlids that form strong, often durable pair bonds. As breeding approaches, a pair selects and cleans a spawning site — typically a flat rock, a firm patch of substrate, or the wall of a depression — and becomes territorial, both partners defending the area while the male, as the larger fish, leads the repelling of intruders. Courtship runs through the lateral displays, fin-spreading, quivering and substrate-cleaning common to substrate-spawning Neotropical cichlids, and the pair's colours intensify into the barred breeding dress; in this species, with its tendency toward red flanks, breeding fish are likely to be especially vivid. Chanchito pair bonds are noted for persisting between spawnings, which tends to make these fish comparatively reliable breeders for cichlids of their temperament.

Breeding

Australoheros ribeirae is a biparental, open-substrate (and pit) spawner — the reproductive mode shared across the genus — but its breeding has not been documented specifically, and what follows is inferred from genus-typical behaviour rather than a species-level account. The female deposits adhesive eggs in neat rows on a cleaned hard surface, and both parents tend the clutch: the female fans and mouths the eggs while the male patrols and defends the territory. After hatching, the parents shift the wrigglers among shallow pits excavated in the substrate, moving them between nursery depressions as they develop; the fry become free-swimming after a few days and are then guarded and shepherded as a tight school by both adults, a hallmark of chanchito parental care. No egg count has been published for Australoheros ribeirae; as a small species it would be expected to lay a modest clutch, on the order of the few-hundred eggs typical of similarly sized congeners and well below the many hundreds laid by large chanchitos such as Australoheros facetus — this is a genus-typical estimate, not a measured figure for the species. In aquaria the genus is generally straightforward to spawn, and a seasonal cue — a cool-down followed by warming and water changes, mimicking the temperate spring of its native coastal range — is a natural breeding trigger for these cool-adapted fish.

In the aquarium

Australoheros ribeirae is essentially unknown in the hobby. It has no documented trade history, carries no established common name in the aquarium literature, and there are no keeper reports specific to this species in the published cichlid hobbyist literature as of this writing. What follows is therefore drawn from the well-documented husbandry of closely related chanchitos — above all Australoheros facetus, which has been kept since the nineteenth century, and the handful of other Australoheros that have passed through hobbyist hands — with the caveat noted wherever a claim is genus-typical rather than species-specific.

A tank of 20–25 US gal (roughly 90 × 15.5 in footprint) is adequate for a single pair of this small species, as the fish reaches only about 3 in SL and is not a wide-ranging open-water fish. Substrate should be fine to medium gravel or sand — the species lives over soft-bottomed streams and lagoons and parents will excavate spawning pits — with smooth flat stones placed flat on or partially buried in the substrate to serve as potential spawning sites. Some plant cover (robust species such as Java fern or Anubias are sensible where digging will occur) and a broken line of sight with driftwood or clay pipe work both as environmental enrichment and as a way to reduce aggression between tank occupants. Bright, open conditions are not required; the lowland Atlantic Forest streams of the Ribeira de Iguape are likely shaded and moderately tannin-stained.

The water chemistry inferred for this species reflects those subtropical coastal drainages: soft to moderately hard, near-neutral to slightly acidic water in the pH 6.0–7.5 range, at temperatures of 64–79 °F. The cool end of that range matters — chanchitos as a group are among the most cool-tolerant of all Neotropical cichlids, and keeping Australoheros ribeirae at the upper end of the tropical cichlid norm (82–86 °F) for extended periods would be inappropriate. Moderate heating to a mid-range of about 68–75 °F suits the species well for most of the year; a brief seasonal cool-down to the low-to-mid teens is reported to act as a spawning trigger for related chanchitos and would be a biologically appropriate management practice for this species too.

As a pair-bonding, biparental substrate spawner, Australoheros ribeirae is best kept as a confirmed pair rather than with other conspecifics in a small aquarium. The pair bond is generally cohesive, but both partners will defend territory vigorously around a spawning site, and tankmates must be chosen with that in mind. Robust mid-water species of similar size — dither fish from subtropical South America, such as smaller characins or livebearers tolerant of cooler water — can work as tankmates in a sufficiently large tank, but keeping Australoheros ribeirae with shy or fine-finned species is inadvisable when a pair is breeding. Other cichlids, particularly other chanchitos, are risky in close quarters because territorial conflicts escalate quickly with substrate-spawning species.

The most common mistake likely to be made with Australoheros ribeirae — generalizing from how other small Neotropical cichlids are commonly kept — is running the tank too warm. These are not Amazonian fish: keeping them at the standard tropical temperature of 79–82 °F year-round is not acutely harmful but is above what the natural seasonal range suggests, and may suppress or prevent spawning. Difficulty is low to moderate by cichlid standards — the genus is hardy, undemanding about food (readily accepting quality dried, frozen and live foods), and straightforward to condition and spawn — but the narrow natural range, likely soft-water origin and probable sensitivity to prolonged high temperatures mean that a keeper replicating warm-water Neotropical conditions will not get the best from the fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Australoheros ribeirae as Least Concern, in an assessment carried out on 7 November 2018 by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022 (reviewer P. Reis). The justification notes that the species is endemic to the rio Ribeira de Iguape basin in São Paulo, that it is frequent though not abundant, that it shows some tolerance of environmental modification, and that no significant threats to its population were identified; it carries no CITES listing and no documented commercial or aquarium-trade use. The assessment records that it occurs within protected areas — the Parque Estadual da Campina do Encantado and the Serra do Mar Environmental Protection Area — and flags the need for basic study of its distribution limits, population trends and biology. That favourable status sits within a basin worth understanding in its own right. The Ribeira de Iguape, draining some 27,0 mi² of the Atlantic Forest across São Paulo and Paraná, is one of the more intact large coastal river systems in southeastern Brazil — notably, as of recent reviews no dams had been built on the main river, though several have been proposed — and it harbours a species-rich fish fauna with many endemic and threatened forms. Even so, the wider Atlantic Forest of the Vale do Ribeira faces the familiar pressures of agriculture (including banana cultivation on the coastal plain), historical and illegal mining, deforestation and the spread of introduced fishes, and any future damming would fragment the very lowland habitats this cichlid occupies. Australoheros ribeirae is comparatively safe today precisely because its basin remains relatively unblocked; that is the context against which a narrow-range coastal endemic should be watched, and the reason the assessment calls for the monitoring it currently lacks.
