Taxonomy & naming
Geophagus winemilleri was described in 2004 by Hernán López-Fernández and Donald C. Taphorn in the journal Zootaxa (439: 1–27), in a paper that simultaneously erected three new Venezuelan eartheaters — Geophagus abalios, Geophagus dicrozoster, and Geophagus winemilleri. The holotype (MCNG 35486, an adult of 7.5 in standard length) was collected by K. Winemiller and D. Jepsen on 21 January 1997 at Laguna Yocuta on the Río Siapa, in Amazonas State, Venezuela (roughly 2.13°N, 66.37°W); the paratype series spans the lower Casiquiare and the headwaters of the Río Negro. The genus Geophagus, erected by Johann Jakob Heckel in 1840, was restricted by Sven Kullander in his 1986 revision to the species bearing paired caudal extensions of the swimbladder and more caudal than abdominal vertebrae — the lineage now called Geophagus sensu stricto. Within that genus, winemilleri belongs to the so-called Geophagus surinamensis group or complex, an assemblage of more than a dozen deep-bodied, head-marked sand-sifters whose taxonomy was long muddled because almost every traded Geophagus was once lumped under the name Geophagus surinamensis. The describers diagnosed winemilleri by a combination of characters: a dark preopercular mark (absent in the no-marking species such as Geophagus altifrons and Geophagus surinamensis, and unlike the full infraorbital stripe of Geophagus taeniopareius and its allies), together with exactly four ventrally inclined lateral bars — fewer than the seven of Geophagus dicrozoster and unlike the barless Geophagus brachybranchus and Geophagus proximus. No synonyms exist; the species has carried the same name since description. The German aquarium trade had already been moving a fish as 'Geophagus sp. Rio Negro I' or 'stripetail' (Weidner 2000), and the describers noted it corresponds well with Geophagus winemilleri.
Morphology
Geophagus winemilleri is a moderately elongate, laterally compressed eartheater with the steeply rising forehead typical of the genus. FishBase lists a maximum of 8 in standard length, consistent with the 7.5 in holotype and the largest paratypes near 7.5 in; a maximum published weight of about 274 g is on record. The body is grayish-yellow in preserved fish but vivid in life: the snout is gray shading to bluish on the cheek, the gill cover yellow with an iridescent blue spot on each scale, and the flanks bluish-silver crossed by about five longitudinal yellow stripes. The fins carry the species' best colors — the dorsal and anal are brownish-red with iridescent blue longitudinal banding, the pelvic fins bright red with blue banding and a white leading edge, and the caudal fin red with large blue-to-white spots that in some fish merge into stripes. Three field marks define it. First, a vertical dark bar sits in the corner of the preopercle (the gill-cover bone), faint or absent in fish under about 3 in. Second, four broad, ventrally slanted bars run down the flank and fade below the lower lateral line; these are usually visible only when the fish is stressed, spawning, or preserved. Third, a blackish midlateral blotch coincides with the second bar, riding just below the upper lateral line. Juveniles show a fifth bar across the tail base that fades with growth, and young fish carry vertical dark bands in the tail. Fin counts run to XVIII–XIX dorsal spines with 10–12 soft rays and three anal spines. The original describers found the sexes to be isomorphic — there are no reliable external differences between males and females except when a ripe female's ovipositor is extended at spawning.
Habitat
The species is known from the black waters of the lower Casiquiare drainage and the headwaters of the Río Negro in southern Venezuela (Amazonas State), with type material from the Río Siapa, Caño Emoni, and several Casiquiare and upper Negro localities. It is almost certainly present in adjacent northern Brazil: individuals are commonly sold in the fish market at Barcelos on the middle Río Negro, and if it is the same fish traded as 'Rio Negro I,' its range may extend downstream toward the Anavilhanas archipelago near the river's mouth. Whether it reaches the Orinoco main stem through the Casiquiare — the natural canal that links the Orinoco and Amazon basins — is unresolved; the describers had too few collections to say. This is a blackwater specialist. It has not been recorded from turbid 'white' waters, and appears restricted to acidic, mineral-poor environments. Its favored microhabitat is gently sloping marginal zones along shores and islands, floored with soft bare sand or mud, sometimes with scattered rocks, submerged roots, branches, and leaf litter. These are shallow shoreline waters; the genus forages over near-bank sandflats rather than in deep channels. Blackwater habitats of the upper Negro and Casiquiare run warm (about 79–86 °F), strongly acidic (pH often well below 5 in the most extreme igapó, up to near-neutral at the Casiquiare's clearer reaches), and extraordinarily soft, with very low conductivity. The fish was uncommonly caught even by the describers — a review of nearly 400 Geophagus lots at the MCNG collection turned up only six of this species — so it is genuinely scarce in the wild record.
Feeding
Geophagus winemilleri is an eartheater in the literal sense: like its congeners it is benthophagous, taking mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment, sorting the edible fraction with its gill rakers and pharyngeal mill, and expelling the cleaned grit back out through the gill openings and mouth. FishBase places the genus low on the food web, with an estimated trophic level near 2.3. The stomach contents of wild Geophagus of this group are dominated by small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, plant matter such as seeds, organic detritus, and ingested sediment — the diet of a generalist bottom forager working soft substrates. Its dentition reflects this: rows of thin, pointed unicuspid teeth in the jaws and a lower pharyngeal plate whose rear teeth are enlarged and nearly molariform, suited to crushing small hard items. Although it sifts the bottom for most of its meals, the fish readily rises into the water column when food appears and resumes sand-combing afterward. In its blackwater community it shares the sandy margins with a long list of Río Negro fishes — cardinal and green neon tetras, Pterophyllum altum, Satanoperca daemon, Biotodoma wavrini, Heros notatus, and the threadfin acara among them — partitioning the shoreline as a low-impact detritivore and invertebrate-sifter.
Mating
Outside of breeding, Geophagus winemilleri is a notably peaceful, gregarious fish that tends to live in loose aggregations and will not molest anything it cannot swallow. Because the sexes are externally identical, pairs form by mutual selection rather than by males advertising to females, and observers describe courtship as relatively understated — fin flaring, slow circling, gaping, and head-jerking displays rather than the violent jousting of many cichlids. Sexual maturity comes slowly; a fish may need at least a year to be ready to spawn. As a pair commits, it selects and cleans a spawning site and begins to defend the immediate area against intruders, the female staying close to the chosen surface while the male patrols the wider perimeter. This division of labor — female on the nest, male on the territory — carries straight through into the brood-care phase. The mild temperament and the difficulty of sexing are the two facts that most shape how the species is bred: keepers raise groups and wait for pairs to declare themselves rather than trying to hand-pick a male and female.
Breeding
Geophagus winemilleri is a substrate-spawning, larvophilous, biparental mouthbrooder — a two-stage strategy shared with much of the surinamensis group and confirmed in aquaria. The pair spawns in open-substrate fashion on a cleaned surface: typically a flat rock or piece of driftwood, though the bare tank bottom is sometimes used. The female lays one or more rows of eggs and the male follows to fertilize them, the sequence repeating over several hours. The eggs are then guarded on the substrate — the female tending and fanning, the male defending the surroundings — for roughly 72 hours until they hatch, at which point the female (and sometimes both parents from the outset) takes the wriggling larvae into her mouth. From there the brood is carried orally. Care is flexible and varies with the individual male: in some pairs the female holds the entire brood and may even be driven off to rear it alone, while in others both parents hold fry simultaneously or pass the whole brood back and forth, the exchanges often taking place in a sheltered pit in the sand. The young become free-swimming at about 8–11 days, when the parents start releasing them to feed and shepherd them back into the mouth at any sign of danger, a rapid flick of the pelvic fins apparently serving as the recall signal; as the fry grow they may return to the mouth only at night. There is no obvious environmental trigger beyond good condition — a varied diet and a stable, well-maintained tank with large regular water changes are the main requirements. Free-swimming fry are easily raised on powdered dry foods, Artemia nauplii, and microworm.
In the aquarium
Geophagus winemilleri is rare in the hobby — other surinamensis-group fish are frequently sold under its name — but where it is available it is kept as a peaceful, medium-large eartheater suited to a roomy blackwater community. Because it reaches about 8 in and is happiest in a group, a tank with a base footprint of roughly 180 × 23.5 in (about 160 US gal or more) is the realistic minimum; the species' gregarious nature means a group of five to eight, allowing a dominance hierarchy to form, settles far better than a lonely pair or trio, where weaker fish get bullied and the group stays nervous.
The single most important furnishing is a deep bed of soft sand. These fish feed by taking sand into the mouth, and coarse gravel or pebbles inhibit that behavior, can abrade or be lodged in the gills, and may be swallowed with risk of blockage. Décor is otherwise a matter of taste — dim lighting, driftwood, and scattered roots or branches suit the species and echo its habitat. Leaf litter is natural but awkward in practice, because the constant sand-sifting keeps partly decomposed material in suspension that clouds the water and clogs filters. A flat rock or two gives the fish a potential spawning surface.
Water quality matters more than exact chemistry. These cichlids are very sensitive to deteriorating conditions and to swings in parameters, and should never go into a biologically immature tank; inadequate maintenance invites head-and-lateral-line erosion and stunting. The standard regime is heavy over-filtration (canister and/or sump) paired with weekly water changes of 50–70 percent, with filter returns positioned to avoid strong flow, which these fish of calm shoreline shallows dislike. Aim for warm water (79–86 °F) and soft, acidic conditions (pH from the low 4s to about 7, very soft and low in minerals) to match the blackwater origin, though the fish is adaptable provided stability is maintained. Feed several small portions a day of fine-grade prepared foods plus small live or frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, Artemia, and mosquito larvae, including some vegetable content such as spirulina; even adults struggle with large items.
Compatibility is easy outside of spawning: winemilleri is among the more peaceful cichlids and works in a Río Negro biotope alongside the tetras, angelfish, and other soft-water species it shares the wild with. Avoid aggressive or territorial bottom-dwellers and anything needing hard, alkaline water. Some keepers house Geophagus with Potamotrygon stingrays with mixed results — successful in many tanks, but with occasional unexplained nighttime losses. When breeding in a community, it is best to move a brooding female, since released fry are quickly eaten by tankmates and even by conspecifics.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Geophagus winemilleri as Least Concern (assessed 28 October 2020 by C. Lasso, published 2023). The species carries no CITES listing and is considered harmless to humans. Its blackwater range across the lower Casiquiare and upper Río Negro lies in a sparsely populated, comparatively intact region, which underpins the favorable assessment; the fish enters the ornamental trade chiefly via markets such as Barcelos on the middle Negro, but at a scale the assessment does not flag as a population-level threat. That said, the species is genuinely uncommon in scientific collections — only a handful of museum lots exist — so its true abundance and the southern extent of its range remain poorly documented, and a fish so tied to acidic blackwater would be sensitive to changes in water chemistry. The wider Negro and upper Orinoco are increasingly exposed to pressures common across Amazonia, including illegal gold mining and the mercury contamination that accompanies it, deforestation, and altered hydrology. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but they form the backdrop against which the long-term status of a blackwater specialist should be read.
